24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. He then gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tabernacle. 25 And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to them, and he took some of the Spirit that was on Moses[a] and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them,[b] they prophesied,[c] but did not do so again.[d]
Eldad and Medad
26 But two men remained in the camp; one’s name was Eldad, and the other’s name was Medad. And the Spirit rested on them. (Now they were among those in the registration,[e] but had not gone to the tabernacle.) So they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a[f] young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!” 28 Joshua son of Nun, the servant[g] of Moses, one of his choice young men,[h] said,[i] “My lord Moses, stop them!”[j] 29 Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for me?[k] I wish that[l] all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” 30 Then Moses returned to the camp along with the elders of Israel.
Provision of Quail
31 Now a wind[m] went out[n] from the Lord and brought quail[o] from the sea, and let them fall[p] near the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about three feet[q] high on the surface of the ground. 32 And the people stayed up[r] all that day, all that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail. The one who gathered the least gathered ten homers,[s] and they spread them out[t] for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth, before they chewed it,[u] the anger of the Lord burned against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague.
34 So the name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah,[v] because there they buried the people that craved different food.[w] 35 The people traveled from Kibroth Hattaavah to Hazeroth, and they stayed at Hazeroth.
Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses
12 [x] Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against[y] Moses because of the Cushite[z] woman he had married[aa] (for he had married an Ethiopian woman). 2 They[ab] said, “Has the Lord spoken only[ac] through Moses? Has he not also spoken through us?”[ad] And the Lord heard it.[ae]
3 (Now the man Moses was very humble,[af] more so than any man on the face of the earth.)
The Response of the Lord
4 The Lord spoke immediately to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam: “The three of you come to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them went. 5 And the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent; he then called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward.
6 The Lord[ag] said, “Hear now my words: If there is a prophet among you,[ah] I the Lord[ai] will make myself known to him in a vision; I will speak with him in a dream. 7 My servant[aj] Moses is not like this; he is faithful[ak] in all my house. 8 With him I will speak face to face,[al] openly[am] and not in riddles, and he will see the form[an] of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” 9 The anger of the Lord burned against them, and he departed. 10 After the cloud had departed[ao] from above the tent, there was[ap] Miriam, leprous[aq] like snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and realized[ar] that she was leprous.
The Intercession of Moses
11 So Aaron said to Moses, “O my lord,[as] please do not hold this sin against us, in which we have acted foolishly and have sinned! 12 Do not let her be like a baby born dead, whose flesh is half consumed when it comes out of its[at] mother’s womb!”
13 Then Moses cried to the Lord, “Heal her now, O God.”[au] 14 The Lord said to Moses, “If her father had only spit[av] in her face, would she not have been disgraced for seven days? Shut her out from the camp seven days, and afterward she can be brought back in again.”
15 So Miriam was shut outside of the camp for seven days, and the people did not journey on until Miriam was brought back in.[aw] 16 After that the people moved from Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.
Spies Sent Out
13 [ax] The Lord spoke[ay] to Moses: 2 “Send out men to investigate[az] the land of Canaan, which I am giving[ba] to the Israelites. You are to send one man from each ancestral tribe,[bb] each one a leader among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the command[bc] of the Lord. All of them were leaders[bd] of the Israelites.
4 Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe[be] of Joseph, namely, the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vopshi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki. 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to investigate the land. And Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.[bf]
The Spies’ Instructions
17 When Moses sent[bg] them to investigate the land of Canaan, he told them, “Go up through the Negev,[bh] and then go up into the hill country 18 and see[bi] what the land is like,[bj] and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, few or many, 19 and whether the land they live in is good or bad, and whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or fortified cities, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether or not there are forests in it. And be brave,[bk] and bring back some of the fruit of the land.” Now it was the time of year[bl] for the first ripe grapes.[bm]
The Spies’ Activities
21 So they went up and investigated the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob,[bn] at Lebo Hamath. 22 When they went up through the Negev, they[bo] came[bp] to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai,[bq] descendants of Anak, were living. (Now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan[br] in Egypt.) 23 When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a staff[bs] between two men, as well as some of the pomegranates and the figs. 24 That place was called[bt] the Eshcol Valley,[bu] because of the cluster[bv] of grapes that the Israelites cut from there. 25 They returned from investigating the land after forty days.
The Spies’ Reports
26 They came back[bw] to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh.[bx] They reported[by] to the whole community and showed the fruit of the land. 27 They told Moses,[bz] “We went to the land where you sent us.[ca] It is indeed flowing with milk and honey,[cb] and this is its fruit. 28 But[cc] the inhabitants[cd] are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the banks[ce] of the Jordan.”[cf]
30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses, saying, “Let us go up[cg] and occupy it,[ch] for we are well able to conquer it.”[ci] 31 But the men[cj] who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against these people, because they are stronger than we are!” 32 Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging report[ck] of the land they had investigated, saying, “The land that we passed through[cl] to investigate is a land that devours[cm] its inhabitants.[cn] All the people we saw there[co] are of great stature. 33 We even saw the Nephilim[cp] there (the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed like grasshoppers both to ourselves[cq] and to them.”[cr]
The Lord’s Supper
22 While they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it. This is my body.” 23 And after taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is my blood, the blood[a] of the covenant,[b] that is poured out for many. 25 I tell you the truth,[c] I will no longer drink of the fruit[d] of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”[e] 26 After singing a hymn,[f] they went out to the Mount of Olives.
The Prediction of Peter’s Denial
27 Then[g] Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written,
‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[h]
28 But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 Peter said to him, “Even if they all fall away, I will not!” 30 Jesus said to him, “I tell you the truth,[i] today—this very night—before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But Peter[j] insisted emphatically,[k] “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all of them said the same thing.
Gethsemane
32 Then[l] they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus[m] said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James,[n] and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed. 34 He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.” 35 Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him. 36 He said, “Abba,[o] Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup[p] away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then[q] he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 He went away again and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open.[r] And they did not know what to tell him. 41 He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?[s] Enough of that![t] The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer[u] is approaching!”
Betrayal and Arrest
43 Right away, while Jesus[v] was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived.[w] With him came a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law[x] and elders. 44 (Now the betrayer[y] had given them a sign, saying, “The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard.”)[z] 45 When Judas[aa] arrived, he went up to Jesus[ab] immediately and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed[ac] him. 46 Then they took hold of him[ad] and arrested him. 47 One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave,[ae] cutting off his ear. 48 Jesus said to them, “Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would an outlaw?[af] 49 Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, yet[ag] you did not arrest me. But this has happened so that[ah] the scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50 Then[ai] all the disciples[aj] left him and fled. 51 A young man was following him, wearing only a linen cloth. They tried to arrest him, 52 but he ran off naked,[ak] leaving his linen cloth behind.

52 Why do you boast about your evil plans,[d] O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long.[e]
2 Your tongue carries out your destructive plans;[f]
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver.[g]
3 You love evil more than good,

4 You love to use all the words that destroy,[i]
