New English Translation (NET)
Version
Leviticus 25:47-27:13

47 “‘If a resident foreigner who is with you prospers[a] and your brother becomes impoverished with regard to him so that[b] he sells himself to a resident foreigner who is with you or to a member[c] of a foreigner’s family, 48 after he has sold himself he retains a right of redemption.[d] One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his cousin[e] may redeem him, or any one of the rest of his blood relatives—his family[f]—may redeem him, or if[g] he prospers he may redeem himself. 50 He must calculate with the one who bought him the number of years[h] from the year he sold himself to him until the Jubilee year, and the cost of his sale must correspond to the number of years, according to the rate of wages a hired worker would have earned while with him.[i] 51 If there are still many years, in keeping with them[j] he must refund most of the cost of his purchase for his redemption, 52 but if only a few years remain[k] until the Jubilee, he must calculate for himself in keeping with the remaining years and refund it for his redemption. 53 He must be with the one who bought him[l] like a yearly hired worker.[m] The one who bought him[n] must not rule over him harshly in your sight. 54 If, however,[o] he is not redeemed in these ways, he must go free[p] in the Jubilee year, he and his children with him, 55 because the Israelites are my own servants;[q] they are my servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

Exhortation to Obedience

26 “‘You must not make for yourselves idols,[r] so you must not set up for yourselves a carved image or a pillar, and you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down before[s] it, for I am the Lord your God. You must keep my Sabbaths and reverence[t] my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

The Benefits of Obedience

“‘If you walk in my statutes and are sure to obey my commandments,[u] I will give you your rains in their time so that[v] the land will give its yield and the trees of the field will produce their fruit.[w] Threshing season will extend for you until the season for harvesting grapes,[x] and the season for harvesting grapes will extend until sowing season, so[y] you will eat your bread until you are satisfied,[z] and you will live securely in your land. I will grant peace in the land so that[aa] you will lie down to sleep without anyone terrifying you.[ab] I will remove harmful animals[ac] from the land, and no sword of war[ad] will pass through your land. You will pursue your enemies and they will fall before you by the sword.[ae] Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. I will turn to you, make you fruitful, multiply you, and maintain[af] my covenant with you. 10 You will still be eating stored produce from the previous year[ag] and will have to clean out what is stored from the previous year to make room for new.[ah]

11 “‘I will put my tabernacle[ai] in your midst and I will not abhor you.[aj] 12 I will walk among you, and I will be your God and you will be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from being their slaves,[ak] and I broke the bars of your yoke and caused you to walk upright.[al]

The Consequences of Disobedience

14 “‘If, however,[am] you do not obey me and keep[an] all these commandments— 15 if you reject my statutes and abhor my regulations so that you do not keep[ao] all my commandments and you break my covenant— 16 I for my part[ap] will do this to you: I will inflict horror on you, consumption and fever, which diminish eyesight and drain away the vitality of life.[aq] You will sow your seed in vain because[ar] your enemies will eat it.[as] 17 I will set my face against you. You will be struck down before your enemies, those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when there is no one pursuing you.

18 “‘If, in spite of all these things,[at] you do not obey me, I will discipline you seven times more on account of your sins.[au] 19 I will break your strong pride and make your sky like iron and your land like bronze. 20 Your strength will be used up in vain, your land will not give its yield, and the trees of the land[av] will not produce their fruit.

21 “‘If you walk in hostility against me[aw] and are not willing to obey me, I will increase your affliction[ax] seven times according to your sins. 22 I will send the wild animals[ay] against you and they will bereave you of your children,[az] annihilate your cattle, and diminish your population[ba] so that your roads will become deserted.

23 “‘If in spite of these things[bb] you do not allow yourselves to be disciplined and you walk in hostility against me,[bc] 24 then I myself will also walk in hostility against you and strike you[bd] seven times on account of your sins. 25 I will bring on you an avenging sword, a covenant vengeance.[be] Although[bf] you will gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you and you will be given into enemy hands.[bg] 26 When I break off your supply of bread,[bh] ten women will bake your bread in one oven; they will ration your bread by weight,[bi] and you will eat and not be satisfied.

27 “‘If in spite of this[bj] you do not obey me but walk in hostility against me,[bk] 28 I will walk in hostile rage against you[bl] and I myself will also discipline you seven times on account of your sins. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.[bm] 30 I will destroy your high places and cut down your incense altars,[bn] and I will stack your dead bodies on top of the lifeless bodies of your idols.[bo] I will abhor you.[bp] 31 I will lay your cities waste[bq] and make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will refuse to smell your soothing aromas. 32 I myself will make the land desolate and your enemies who live in it will be appalled. 33 I will scatter you among the nations and unsheathe the sword[br] after you, so your land will become desolate and your cities will become a waste.

34 “‘Then the land will make up for[bs] its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land will rest and make up its Sabbaths. 35 All the days of the desolation it will have the rest it did not have[bt] on your Sabbaths when you lived on it.

36 “‘As for[bu] the ones who remain among you, I will bring despair into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a blowing leaf will pursue them, and they will flee as one who flees the sword and will fall down even though there is no pursuer. 37 They will stumble over each other as those who flee before a sword, though[bv] there is no pursuer, and there will be no one to take a stand[bw] for you before your enemies. 38 You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will consume you.

Restoration through Confession and Repentance

39 “‘As for the ones who remain among you, they will rot away because of[bx] their iniquity in the lands of your enemies, and they will also rot away because of their ancestors’[by] iniquities which are with them. 40 However, when[bz] they confess their iniquity and their ancestors’ iniquities which they committed by trespassing against me,[ca] by which they also walked[cb] in hostility against me[cc] 41 (and I myself will walk in hostility against them and bring them into the land of their enemies), and[cd] then their uncircumcised hearts become humbled and they make up for[ce] their iniquities, 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham,[cf] and I will remember the land. 43 The land will be abandoned by them[cg] in order that it may make up for[ch] its Sabbaths while it is made desolate[ci] without them,[cj] and they will make up for their iniquity because[ck] they have rejected my regulations and have abhorred[cl] my statutes. 44 In spite of this, however, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them and abhor them to make a complete end of them, to break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. 45 I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors[cm] whom I brought out from the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”

Summary Colophon

46 These are the statutes, regulations, and instructions which the Lord established[cn] between himself and the Israelites at Mount Sinai through[co] Moses.

Redemption of Persons Given as Votive Offerings

27 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘When a man makes a special votive offering[cp] based on the conversion value of a person to the Lord,[cq] the conversion value of the male[cr] from twenty years old up to sixty years old[cs] is fifty shekels by the standard of the sanctuary shekel.[ct] If the person is a female, the conversion value is thirty shekels. If the person is from five years old up to twenty years old, the conversion value of the male is twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. If the person is one month old up to five years old, the conversion value of the male is five shekels of silver,[cu] and for the female the conversion value is three shekels of silver. If the person is from sixty years old and older, if he is a male the conversion value is fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels. If the person making the votive offering[cv] is too poor to pay the conversion value, he must stand the person before the priest and the priest will establish his conversion value;[cw] according to what the man who made the votive offering can afford,[cx] the priest will establish his conversion value.

Redemption of Animals Given as Votive Offerings

“‘If what is vowed is a kind of animal from which an offering may be presented[cy] to the Lord, anything which he gives to the Lord from this kind of animal[cz] will be holy. 10 He must not replace or exchange it, good for bad or bad for good, and if he does indeed exchange one animal for another animal, then both the original animal[da] and its substitute will be holy. 11 If what is vowed is an unclean animal from which an offering must not be presented to the Lord, then he must stand the animal before the priest, 12 and the priest will establish its conversion value,[db] whether good or bad. According to the conversion value assessed by the priest, thus it will be. 13 If, however, the person who made the vow redeems the animal,[dc] he must add one-fifth to[dd] its conversion value.

Mark 10:32-52

Third Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection

32 They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was going ahead of them, and they were amazed, but those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was going to happen to him. 33 “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and experts in the law.[a] They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles. 34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog[b] him severely, and kill him. Yet[c] after three days,[d] he will rise again.”

The Request of James and John

35 Then[e] James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 They said to him, “Permit one of us to sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I experience?”[f] 39 They said to him, “We are able.”[g] Then Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I experience, 40 but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give. It is for those for whom it has been prepared.”[h]

41 Now[i] when the other ten[j] heard this,[k] they became angry with James and John. 42 Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions use their authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you. Instead whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave[l] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom[m] for many.”

Healing Blind Bartimaeus

46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus[n] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout,[o] “Jesus, Son of David,[p] have mercy[q] on me!” 48 Many scolded[r] him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So[s] they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then[t] Jesus said to him,[u] “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi,[v] let me see again.”[w] 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained[x] his sight and followed him on the road.

Psalm 45

Psalm 45[a]

For the music director, according to the tune of “Lilies”;[b] by the Korahites, a well-written poem,[c] a love song.

45 My heart is stirred by a beautiful song.[d]
I say, “I have composed this special song[e] for the king;
my tongue is as skilled as the stylus of an experienced scribe.”[f]
You are the most handsome of all men.[g]
You speak in an impressive and fitting manner.[h]
For this reason[i] God grants you continual blessings.[j]
Strap your sword to your thigh, O warrior.[k]
Appear in your majestic splendor.[l]
Appear in your majesty and be victorious.[m]
Ride forth for the sake of what is right,[n]
on behalf of justice.[o]
Then your right hand will accomplish mighty acts.[p]
Your arrows are sharp
and penetrate the hearts of the king’s enemies.
Nations fall at your feet.[q]
Your throne,[r] O God, is permanent.[s]
The scepter[t] of your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
You love[u] justice and hate evil.[v]
For this reason God, your God,[w] has anointed you[x]
with the oil of joy,[y] elevating you above your companions.[z]
All your garments are perfumed with[aa] myrrh, aloes, and cassia.
From the luxurious palaces[ab] comes the music of stringed instruments that makes you happy.[ac]
Princesses[ad] are among your honored women.[ae]
Your bride[af] stands at your right hand, wearing jewelry made with gold from Ophir.[ag]
10 Listen, O princess.[ah]
Observe and pay attention![ai]
Forget your homeland[aj] and your family.[ak]
11 Then[al] the king will be attracted by[am] your beauty.
After all, he is your master. Submit[an] to him.[ao]
12 Rich people from Tyre
will seek your favor by bringing a gift.[ap]
13 The princess[aq] looks absolutely magnificent,[ar]
decked out in pearls and clothed in a brocade trimmed with gold.[as]
14 In embroidered robes she is escorted to the king.
Her attendants, the maidens of honor who follow her,
are led before you.[at]
15 They are bubbling with joy as they walk in procession
and enter the royal palace.[au]
16 Your[av] sons will carry on[aw] the dynasty of your ancestors;[ax]
you will make them princes throughout the land.
17 I will proclaim your greatness through the coming years,[ay]
then the nations will praise you[az] forever.

Proverbs 10:22

22 The blessing[a] from the Lord[b] makes a person rich,[c]
and he adds no sorrow[d] to[e] it.
