Chronological
Jerusalem, the City of Truth
8 Then the word of Yahweh of hosts came, saying, 2 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘[a]I am (A)jealous with great jealousy for Zion, and with great wrath I am jealous for her.’ 3 Thus says Yahweh, ‘I will return to Zion and will (B)dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of (C)Truth, and the mountain of Yahweh of hosts will be called the Holy Mountain.’ 4 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘(D)Old men and old women will again sit in the [b]streets of Jerusalem, each man with his staff in his hand because of [c]age. 5 And the [d]streets of the city will be filled with (E)boys and girls playing in its [e]streets.’ 6 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘If it is [f](F)too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be [g](G)too difficult in My sight?’ declares Yahweh of hosts. 7 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘Behold, I am going to save My people from the land where the [h](H)sun rises and from the land where the [i]sun sets; 8 and I will (I)bring them back, and they will (J)dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be (K)My people, and I will be their God in [j]truth and righteousness.’
9 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘Let your hands be (L)strong, you who are listening in these days to these words from the mouth of the (M)prophets, those who spoke in the day that the foundation of the house of Yahweh of hosts was laid, to the end that the temple might be built. 10 For before those days there was (N)no wage for man or any wage for animal; and for him who went out or came in there was no [k](O)peace because of the adversary, and I (P)set all men one against another. 11 But now I will (Q)not [l]treat the remnant of this people as in the former days,’ declares Yahweh of hosts. 12 ‘For there will be (R)peace for the seed: the vine will yield its fruit, the land will yield its produce, and the heavens will give their (S)dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to inherit (T)all these things. 13 And it will be that just as you were a (U)curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you that you may become a (V)blessing. Do not fear; let your (W)hands be strong.’
14 “For thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘Just as I (X)purposed to bring about evil to you when your fathers provoked Me to wrath,’ says Yahweh of hosts, ‘and I have not (Y)relented, 15 so I have again purposed in these days to (Z)do good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. (AA)Do not fear! 16 These are the things which you should do: speak the (AB)truth to one another; (AC)judge with truth and judgment for peace in your [m]gates. 17 Also let none of you (AD)devise evil in your heart against another, and do not love [n](AE)false oaths; for all these are what I (AF)hate,’ declares Yahweh.”
18 Then the word of Yahweh of hosts came to me, saying, 19 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘The fast of the (AG)fourth, the fast of the (AH)fifth, the fast of the (AI)seventh, and the fast of the (AJ)tenth months will become (AK)joy, gladness, and [o]merry appointed feasts for the house of Judah; so (AL)love truth and peace.’
20 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘It will yet be that (AM)peoples will come, even the inhabitants of many cities. 21 The inhabitants of one will go to another, saying, “Let us go at once to [p](AN)entreat the favor of Yahweh and to seek Yahweh of hosts; [q]I will also go.” 22 So (AO)many peoples and mighty nations will come to seek Yahweh of hosts in Jerusalem and to [r](AP)entreat the favor of Yahweh.’ 23 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘In those days ten men from every tongue of the nations will [s](AQ)take hold of the [t]garment of a Jew, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”’”
Yahweh’s Oracle Against Israel’s Enemies
9 The [u]oracle of the word of Yahweh is against the land of Hadrach, with (AR)Damascus as its resting place (for the eyes of men, especially of all the tribes of Israel, are toward Yahweh),
2 And (AS)Hamath also, which borders on it;
(AT)And Tyre and (AU)Sidon, [v]because [w]they are (AV)very wise.
3 So Tyre built herself a (AW)tight fortification
And (AX)tied up silver like dust
And (AY)fine gold like the mire of the streets.
4 Behold, the Lord will (AZ)dispossess her
And strike her wealth down into the sea;
And she will be (BA)consumed with fire.
5 Ashkelon will see it and be afraid.
Gaza too will writhe in great pain;
Also Ekron, for her hope has been put to shame.
Moreover, the king will perish from Gaza,
And Ashkelon will not be inhabited.
6 And those of illegitimate birth will inhabit (BB)Ashdod,
And I will cut off the pride of the Philistines.
7 And I will remove their blood from their mouth
And their detestable things from between their teeth.
Then they also will be a remnant for our God,
And be like a [x]clan in Judah,
And Ekron like a Jebusite.
8 But I will camp around My house [y]because of an army,
Because of (BC)him who passes by and returns;
And (BD)no taskmaster will pass over them anymore,
For now I have seen with My eyes.
The Coming King of Zion
9 (BE)Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your (BF)king is coming to you;
He is [z](BG)righteous and (BH)endowed with salvation,
[aa](BI)Lowly and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a [ab](BJ)colt, the [ac]foal of a pack animal.
10 I will (BK)cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the (BL)horse from Jerusalem;
And the (BM)bow of war will be cut off.
And He will speak (BN)peace to the nations;
And His (BO)reign will be from sea to sea
And from the [ad]River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, because of the (BP)blood of your covenant,
I have set your (BQ)prisoners free from the [ae]waterless pit.
12 Return to the [af](BR)stronghold, O prisoners [ag]who have the (BS)hope;
This very day I am declaring that I will return (BT)double to you.
13 For I will (BU)bend Judah [ah]as My bow;
I will fill the bow with Ephraim.
And I will rouse up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O [ai](BV)Greece;
And I will make you like a (BW)mighty man’s sword.
14 Then Yahweh will appear (BX)over them,
And His (BY)arrow will go forth like lightning;
And Lord Yahweh will blow the (BZ)trumpet
And will go in the (CA)storm winds of the south.
15 (CB)Yahweh of hosts will defend them.
And they will (CC)consume and trample on the (CD)stones of a sling;
And they will drink and (CE)roar as with wine;
And they will be filled like a sacrificial bowl,
Drenched like the (CF)corners of the altar.
16 And Yahweh their God will (CG)save them in that day
As the flock of His people;
For they are as the stones of a (CH)crown,
[aj]Sparkling in His land.
17 For what (CI)goodness and (CJ)what beauty will be [ak]theirs!
Grain will make the choice men flourish, and new wine the virgins.
Yahweh Will Redeem Judah and Israel
10 Ask (CK)rain from Yahweh at the time of the [al]late rain—
Yahweh who (CL)makes the [am]storm clouds;
And He will give them (CM)showers of rain, the plant in the field to each man.
2 For the (CN)teraphim speak wickedness,
And the (CO)diviners behold [an]false visions
And speak (CP)worthless dreams;
They comfort in vain.
Therefore the people journey like (CQ)sheep;
They are afflicted because there is no shepherd.
3 “My (CR)anger burns against the shepherds,
And I will visit punishment upon the [ao]male goats;
For Yahweh of hosts has (CS)visited His flock, the house of Judah,
And will make them like His splendid horse in battle.
4 From [ap]them will come the (CT)cornerstone,
From [aq]them the tent peg,
From [ar]them the bow of [as](CU)battle,
From [at]them every good [au]taskmaster, all of them together.
5 And they will be as mighty men,
(CV)Treading down the enemy in the mire of the streets in battle;
And they will battle, for Yahweh will be with them;
And the (CW)riders on horses will be put to shame.
6 I will (CX)make the house of Judah mighty,
And I will (CY)save the house of Joseph,
And I will [av](CZ)cause them to return,
Because I have had (DA)compassion on them;
And they will be as though I had (DB)not rejected them,
For I am Yahweh their God, and I will (DC)answer them.
7 And Ephraim will be like a mighty man,
And their heart will be glad as if from wine;
Indeed, their (DD)children will see it and be glad;
[aw]Their heart will rejoice in Yahweh.
8 I will (DE)whistle for them to gather them together,
For I have redeemed them;
And they will be as (DF)numerous as they (DG)were [ax]before.
9 And I will sow them among the peoples,
And they will (DH)remember Me in far countries,
And they with their children will live and turn back.
10 Then I will cause them to (DI)return from the land of Egypt
And gather them from Assyria;
And I will bring them into the land of (DJ)Gilead and Lebanon
[ay]Until (DK)no room can be found for them.
11 And [az]they will pass through the (DL)sea of distress,
And He will strike the waves in the sea,
So that all the depths of the (DM)Nile will dry up;
And the pride of (DN)Assyria will be brought down,
And the scepter of (DO)Egypt will depart.
12 And I will (DP)make them mighty in Yahweh,
And in His name (DQ)they will walk,” declares Yahweh.
Woe to the Worthless Shepherd
11 Open your doors, O Lebanon,
That a (DR)fire may consume your (DS)cedars.
2 Wail, O [ba]cypress, for the cedar has fallen,
Because the mighty trees have been destroyed;
Wail, O oaks of Bashan,
For the [bb]impenetrable forest has come down.
3 There is a sound of the shepherds’ (DT)wail,
For their might is destroyed;
There is a (DU)sound of the young lions’ roar,
For the [bc]pride of the Jordan is destroyed.
4 Thus says Yahweh my God, “Shepherd the flock doomed to (DV)slaughter. 5 Those who buy them slaughter them and are not (DW)held guilty, and each of those who sell them says, ‘Blessed be Yahweh. Indeed, (DX)I have become rich!’ And their (DY)own shepherds do not spare them. 6 For I will (DZ)no longer spare the inhabitants of the land,” declares Yahweh; “but behold, I will (EA)cause the men to [bd]fall, each into another’s hand and into the hand of his king; and they will crush the land, and I will (EB)not deliver them from their hand.”
7 So I (EC)shepherded the flock doomed to slaughter—[be]hence the (ED)afflicted of the flock. And I took for myself two (EE)staffs: the one I called [bf](EF)Favor, and the other I called [bg](EG)Union; so I shepherded the flock. 8 Then I annihilated the three shepherds in (EH)one month, for my soul was impatient with them, and their soul also [bh]was weary of me. 9 Then I said, “I will not shepherd you. What is to (EI)die, [bi]let it die, and what is to be annihilated, [bj]let it be annihilated; and [bk]let those who remain consume one another’s flesh.” 10 And I took my staff [bl](EJ)Favor and cut it in pieces, to [bm](EK)break my covenant which I had cut with all the peoples. 11 So it was [bn]broken on that day, and [bo]thus the (EL)afflicted of the flock who were watching me knew that it was the word of Yahweh. 12 And I said to them, “If it is good in your sight, give me my (EM)wages; but if not, [bp]never mind!” So they weighed out (EN)thirty [bq]shekels of silver as my wages. 13 Then Yahweh said to me, “Throw it to the (EO)potter, that valuable price at which I was valued by them.” So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of Yahweh. 14 Then I cut in pieces my second staff [br](EP)Union, to (EQ)break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
15 Then Yahweh said to me, “Take again for yourself the equipment of a [bs](ER)foolish shepherd. 16 For behold, I am going to raise up a shepherd in the land who will (ES)not care for those who face annihilation, seek the young, heal the broken, or sustain the one standing, but will (ET)consume the flesh of the fat sheep and tear off their hoofs.
17 (EU)Woe to the worthless shepherd
Who forsakes the flock!
A (EV)sword will be on his arm
And on his right eye!
His (EW)arm will be totally dried up,
And his right eye will be utterly dimmed.”
Yahweh Will Save
12 The oracle of the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.
Thus declares Yahweh who (EX)stretches out the heavens, (EY)lays the foundation of the earth, and (EZ)forms the spirit of man within him, 2 “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a (FA)cup [bt]that causes reeling to all the peoples all around. Now the one in siege against Jerusalem will also be against (FB)Judah. 3 But it will be in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a heavy (FC)stone for all the peoples; all who heave it up will be (FD)severely [bu]injured. And all the (FE)nations of the earth will be gathered against it. 4 In that day,” declares Yahweh, “I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will open my eyes to watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘[bv]A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through Yahweh of hosts, their God.’
6 “In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a (FF)fiery laver among pieces of wood and a fiery torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem will again be (FG)inhabited in its own place—in Jerusalem. 7 Yahweh also will (FH)save the tents of Judah first so that the glory of the house of (FI)David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be magnified above Judah. 8 In that day Yahweh will (FJ)defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who (FK)stumbles among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like (FL)God, like the (FM)angel of Yahweh before them. 9 And it will be in that day, that I will (FN)seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Mourning for the Pierced One
10 “And I will (FO)pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem [bw]the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have (FP)pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one (FQ)mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 11 In that day there will be great (FR)mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the [bx]plain of [by]Megiddo. 12 And the land will mourn, each family alone; the family of the house of David alone and their wives alone; the family of the house of Nathan alone and their wives alone; 13 the family of the house of Levi alone and their wives alone; the family of the Shimeites alone and their wives alone; 14 all the families that remain, each family alone and their wives alone.
Jerusalem Refined and Tested
13 “In that day a (FS)fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for (FT)sin and for (FU)impurity.
2 “And it will be in that day,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “that I will (FV)cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered; and I will also cause the (FW)prophets and the (FX)unclean spirit to pass away from the land. 3 And it will be that if anyone still (FY)prophesies, then his father and mother who gave birth to him will say to him, ‘You shall (FZ)not live, for you have spoken (GA)falsely in the name of Yahweh’; and his (GB)father and mother who gave birth to him will pierce him through when he prophesies. 4 And it will be in that day, that the prophets will each be (GC)ashamed of his vision when he prophesies, and they will not put on a (GD)hairy mantle in order to deceive; 5 but he will say, ‘I am (GE)not a prophet; I am a cultivator of the ground, for a man [bz]sold me as a slave in my youth.’ 6 And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds struck here (GF)between your [ca]arms?’ Then he will say, ‘Those with which I was struck in the house of [cb]my friends.’
7 “Awake, O (GG)sword, against My (GH)Shepherd
And against the man, My (GI)Associate,”
Declares Yahweh of hosts.
“(GJ)Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered;
And I will (GK)turn My hand [cc]against the little ones.
8 And it will be in all the land,”
Declares Yahweh,
“That (GL)two parts in it will be cut off and breathe their last;
But the third will be left in it.
9 And I will bring the third part through the (GM)fire
And refine them as silver is refined
And test them as gold is tested.
[cd]They will (GN)call on My name,
And I will (GO)answer them;
I will say, ‘They are (GP)My people,’
And they will say, ‘Yahweh is my God.’”
Yahweh Will Battle the Nations
14 Behold, a (GQ)day is coming for Yahweh when (GR)the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. 2 Indeed, I will (GS)gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city will be captured, the (GT)houses plundered, the women ravished, and half of the city will go forth in exile, but those left of the people will not be cut off from the city. 3 Then Yahweh will go forth and (GU)fight against those nations, as the day when He fights on a day of battle. 4 And in that day His feet will (GV)stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be (GW)split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south. 5 And you will flee by the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel; indeed, you will flee just as you fled before the (GX)earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. (GY)Then Yahweh, my God, will come, and all the holy ones with [ce]Him!
6 And it will be in that day, that there will be (GZ)no light; the [cf]luminaries will dwindle. 7 And it will be (HA)a [cg]unique day which is (HB)known to Yahweh, neither day nor night, but it will be that at (HC)evening time there will be light.
8 And it will be in that day, (HD)that living waters will flow out of Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter.
Yahweh Will Be King over All
9 And Yahweh will be (HE)king over all the earth; in that day Yahweh will be the only (HF)one, and His name one.
10 All the land will be changed into a plain from (HG)Geba to (HH)Rimmon south of Jerusalem; but [ch]Jerusalem will (HI)rise and (HJ)inhabit its site from (HK)Benjamin’s Gate as far as the place of the First Gate to the (HL)Corner Gate, and from the (HM)Tower of Hananel to the king’s wine presses. 11 And [ci]people will inhabit it, and there will (HN)no longer be anything devoted to destruction, for Jerusalem will (HO)be inhabited in security.
12 Now this will be the plague with which Yahweh will plague all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will (HP)rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth. 13 And it will be in that day, that abundant confusion from Yahweh will [cj]fall on them; and they will (HQ)take hold of one another’s hand, and the hand of one will [ck]go up against the hand of another. 14 (HR)And Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the (HS)wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered, gold and silver and garments in great abundance. 15 And in the same way, (HT)the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, the donkey, and all the cattle that will be in those camps will be like this plague.
16 Then it will be that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will (HU)go up from year to year to worship the King, Yahweh of hosts, and to celebrate the (HV)Feast of Booths. 17 And it will be that whichever of the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the (HW)King, Yahweh of hosts, there will be (HX)no rain on them. 18 And if the family of Egypt does not go up or enter, then no rain will fall on them; it will be the (HY)plague with which Yahweh plagues the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Booths. 19 This will be the [cl]punishment of Egypt, and the [cm]punishment of all the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Booths.
20 In that day there will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “(HZ)Holy to Yahweh.” And the (IA)pots in the house of Yahweh will be like the bowls before the altar. 21 And every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah will be (IB)holy to Yahweh of hosts; and all who sacrifice will come and take of them and boil in them. And there will no longer be a [cn](IC)Canaanite in the house of Yahweh of hosts in that day.
