Chronological
11 (A)Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and craftsmen of wood and craftsmen of stone walls; and (B)they built a house for David. 12 Thus David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, and that He had lifted up his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
Children Born to David in Jerusalem
13 And (C)David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 Now (D)these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
David Goes Up Against the Philistines
17 Then the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, so (E)all the Philistines went up to seek out David. And David heard of it and went down to the (F)fortress. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves out in (G)the valley of Rephaim. 19 Then (H)David asked of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?” And (I)Yahweh said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 So David came to (J)Baal-perazim, and there David struck them down; and he said, “Yahweh has broken through my enemies before me, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place [a]Baal-perazim. 21 And they forsook their idols there; so (K)David and his men carried them away.
22 Then (L)the Philistines yet again came up and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim. 23 So (M)David asked of Yahweh, and He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the [b]balsam trees. 24 And it will be that when (N)you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the [c]balsam trees, then you shall act promptly, for then (O)Yahweh will have gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 25 Then David did so, just as Yahweh had commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from [d](P)Geba [e]as far as (Q)Gezer.
The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem
6 (R)Then David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him [f]from [g](S)Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the (T)Name, the very name of Yahweh of hosts who (U)is [h]enthroned above the cherubim. 3 And they [i]drove the ark of God on (V)a new cart that they might bring it from the house of Abinadab which was on the hill; and [j]Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart. 4 So (W)they brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Ahio was walking ahead of the ark. 5 Now David and all the house of Israel (X)were celebrating before Yahweh (Y)with all kinds of instruments made of [k]fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.
6 Then they came to the (Z)threshing floor of Nacon. And [l]Uzzah (AA)reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen nearly upset it. 7 And the anger of Yahweh burned against Uzzah, and (AB)God struck him down there for [m]his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God. 8 And David became angry because [n]of Yahweh’s breaking out against Uzzah; and that place is called [o]Perez-uzzah to this day. 9 So (AC)David was afraid of Yahweh that day; and he said, “How can the ark of Yahweh come to me?” 10 And David was unwilling to move the ark of Yahweh into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of (AD)Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 Thus the ark of Yahweh remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and Yahweh (AE)blessed Obed-edom and all his household.
12 Then it was told to King David, saying, “Yahweh has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” So (AF)David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into (AG)the city of David with gladness. 13 And so it happened, that when those (AH)who were carrying the ark of Yahweh had gone six paces, he sacrificed an (AI)ox and a fatling. 14 And (AJ)David was dancing before Yahweh with all his strength, and David was (AK)girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of Yahweh with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.
David Dances Before Yahweh
16 Then it happened as the ark of Yahweh came into the city of David, that (AL)Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Yahweh; and she despised him in her heart.
17 And they brought in the ark of Yahweh and placed it (AM)in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and (AN)David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh. 18 Then David completed offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings. And (AO)he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh of hosts. 19 And he apportioned to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people went each to his house.
20 But David returned to bless his household, and Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel has glorified himself today! (AP)He uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants’ maids as one of the (AQ)worthless ones shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 So David said to Michal, “(AR)It was before Yahweh, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of Yahweh, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before Yahweh. 22 And I will be esteemed even more lightly than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be glorified.” 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
Uzza Dies from Touching the Ark
13 Then David took counsel with the commanders of the thousands and the hundreds, even with every leader. 2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is from Yahweh our God, let us send everywhere to our relatives who remain in all the lands of Israel, also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their cities with pasture lands, that they may gather with us; 3 and let us bring back the ark of our God to us, (A)for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” 4 Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5 (B)So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor of Egypt even to [a]Lebo-hamath, (C)to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 6 (D)And David and all Israel went up to (E)Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, Yahweh, (F)who is enthroned above the cherubim, where His name is called. 7 And they drove the ark of God on a new cart from (G)the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio were leading the cart. 8 Now David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their strength, (H)even with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and with trumpets.
9 Then they came to (I)the threshing floor of Chidon. And Uzza reached out with his hand to take hold of the ark, because the oxen nearly upset it. 10 And the anger of Yahweh burned against Uzza, and He struck him down (J)because he reached out with his hand to the ark; (K)and he died there before God. 11 And David became angry because [b]of Yahweh’s breaking out against Uzza; and that place is called [c]Perez-uzza to this day. 12 So David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God back to me?” 13 And David did not move the ark with him to the city of David, but took it aside (L)to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 Thus the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months; and (M)Yahweh blessed the household of Obed-edom with all that he had.
David Takes More Wives
14 (N)Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and craftsmen of walls and craftsmen of wood, to build a house for him. 2 Thus David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was lifted up, for the sake of His people Israel.
3 Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David [d]became the father of more sons and daughters. 4 (O)These are the names of the children [e]born to him in Jerusalem:
Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
7 Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.
David Strikes Down the Philistines
8 Then the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, so all the Philistines went up to seek out David. And David heard of it and went out against them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and (P)made a raid in the valley of Rephaim. 10 Then David asked of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You give them into my hand?” And Yahweh said to him, “Go up, for I will give them into your hand.” 11 So they came up to [f]Baal-perazim, and there David struck them down; and David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore they named that place [g]Baal-perazim. 12 And they forsook their gods there; so David said the word, and they were burned with fire.
13 Then the Philistines (Q)yet again made a raid in the valley. 14 So David again asked of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go directly up after them; circle around from [h]behind them and come at them in front of the [i]balsam trees. 15 And it will be that when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the [j]balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 16 Then David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the camp of the Philistines from [k]Gibeon even as far as Gezer. 17 Then the name of David went out into all the lands; and (R)Yahweh brought the dread of him on all the nations.
The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem
15 Then David made houses for himself in the city of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God and (S)pitched a tent for it. 2 And David said, “(T)No one is to carry the ark of God but the Levites; for Yahweh chose them to carry the ark of [l]God and to minister to Him forever.” 3 Then (U)David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of Yahweh (V)to its place which he had prepared for it. 4 And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and (W)the Levites:
5 of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, and 120 of his [m]relatives;
6 of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and 220 of his relatives;
7 of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, and 130 of his relatives;
8 of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, and 200 of his relatives;
9 of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, and 80 of his relatives;
10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, and 112 of his relatives.
11 Then David called for (X)Zadok and (Y)Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab, 12 and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites; (Z)set yourselves apart as holy, both you and your relatives, that you may bring up the ark of Yahweh, the God of Israel, (AA)to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 (AB)Because you did not carry it at the first, Yahweh our God broke out against us, for we did not seek Him according to the legal judgment.” 14 (AC)So the priests and the Levites set themselves apart as holy to bring up the ark of Yahweh, the God of Israel. 15 And the sons of (AD)the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles thereon, as Moses had commanded according to the word of Yahweh.
16 Then David said to the chiefs of the Levites (AE)to appoint their relatives the singers, with instruments of music, harps, lyres, loud-sounding cymbals, to raise a sound of gladness. 17 So (AF)the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel, and from his relatives, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and from the sons of Merari their relatives, Ethan the son of Kushaiah, 18 and with them their relatives of the second rank, Zechariah, [n]Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. 19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph and Ethan were appointed to sound aloud cymbals of bronze; 20 and Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with [o]harps set according to (AG)alamoth; 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, to lead with [p]lyres set according to (AH)the sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was in charge of the [q]singing; he gave instruction in singing because he had understanding. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were gatekeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, (AI)blew the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah also were gatekeepers for the ark.
25 (AJ)So it was David, with the elders of Israel and the commanders over thousands, who went to bring up the ark of the covenant of Yahweh from (AK)the house of Obed-edom with gladness. 26 Now this happened because God was helping the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. And they sacrificed (AL)seven bulls and seven rams. 27 Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, as well as the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers. (AM)David also wore a linen ephod. 28 Thus all Israel was bringing up the ark of the covenant of Yahweh with shouting, and with sound of the [r]horn, with trumpets, with loud-sounding cymbals, with harps, and lyres.
29 Now it happened as the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came to the city of David, that (AN)Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and celebrating; and she despised him in her heart.
A Tent for the Ark
16 And they brought in the ark of God and (AO)placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and they brought burnt offerings and peace offerings near before God. 2 Then David completed offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings. And he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh. 3 And he apportioned to everyone of Israel, both men and women, to everyone a loaf of bread and a portion of meat and a raisin cake.
4 And he made some of the Levites ministers before the ark of Yahweh, even to bring remembrance and to thank and praise Yahweh, the God of Israel: 5 Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then [s]Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, with musical instruments, harps, lyres; also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals, 6 and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
7 Then on that day David (AP)first assigned [t]Asaph and his [u]relatives to give thanks to Yahweh.
Song of Thanksgiving
8 (AQ)Oh give thanks to Yahweh, call upon His name;
(AR)Make known His acts among the peoples.
9 Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Muse on all His wondrous deeds.
10 Boast in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh be glad.
11 (AS)Inquire of Yahweh and His strength;
Seek His face continually.
12 (AT)Remember His wondrous deeds which He has done,
(AU)His miraculous signs and the judgments uttered by His mouth,
13 O seed of Israel His servant,
O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
14 He is Yahweh our God;
(AV)His judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded for a thousand generations,
16 (AW)Which He cut with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac.
17 (AX)Then He also confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
18 Saying, “(AY)To you I will give the land of Canaan,
As the portion of your inheritance,”
19 (AZ)When you were only a few men in number,
Of little account, and sojourners in it,
20 And they wandered about from nation to nation,
And from one kingdom to another people,
21 He permitted no man to oppress them,
And (BA)He reproved kings for their sakes,
22 “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And (BB)against My prophets do no evil.”
23 (BC)Sing to Yahweh, all the earth;
Proclaim good news of His salvation from day to day.
24 Recount His glory among the nations,
His wondrous deeds among all the peoples.
25 For (BD)great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised;
And He is [v](BE)more [w]fearsome than all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are [x](BF)idols,
(BG)But Yahweh made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and joy are in His place.
28 Ascribe to Yahweh, O families of the peoples,
Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
29 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name;
Lift up [y]an offering, and come before Him;
(BH)Worship Yahweh in the splendor of holiness.
30 Tremble before Him, all the earth;
Indeed, the world is established, it will not be shaken.
31 (BI)Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
And let them say among the nations, “(BJ)Yahweh reigns.”
32 (BK)Let the sea [z]roar, as well as its fullness;
Let the field exult, and all that is in it.
33 Then the trees of the forest will sing for joy before Yahweh;
For He is coming to judge the earth.
34 (BL)Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
35 (BM)Then say, “Save us, O God of our salvation,
And gather us and deliver us from among the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name
And revel in Your praise.”
36 (BN)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people (BO)said, “Amen,” and praised Yahweh.
Ministering Before the Ark
37 So he left behind Asaph and his [aa]relatives there (BP)before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to minister before the ark continually, (BQ)as every day’s work required; 38 and (BR)Obed-edom with [ab]his 68 relatives; Obed-edom, also the son of Jeduthun, and (BS)Hosah as gatekeepers. 39 Now he left behind (BT)Zadok the priest and his [ac]relatives the priests (BU)before the [ad]tabernacle of Yahweh in the high place, which was at Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh on the altar of burnt offering continually morning and evening, (BV)even according to all that is written in the law of Yahweh, which He commanded Israel. 41 And with them were (BW)Heman and Jeduthun, and (BX)the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to (BY)give thanks to Yahweh, because His lovingkindness endures forever. 42 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those who should sound aloud, and with instruments for (BZ)the songs of God, and the sons of Jeduthun for the gate.
43 (CA)Then all the people went each to his house, and David returned to bless his household.
