Psalm 45:15-69:21

15 They are bubbling with joy as they walk in procession
and enter the royal palace.[a]
16 Your[b] sons will carry on[c] the dynasty of your ancestors;[d]
you will make them princes throughout the land.
17 I will proclaim your greatness through the coming years,[e]
then the nations will praise you[f] forever.

Psalm 46[g]

For the music director, by the Korahites; according to the alamoth style;[h] a song.

46 God is our strong refuge;[i]
he is truly our helper in times of trouble.[j]
For this reason we do not fear[k] when the earth shakes,[l]
and the mountains tumble into the depths of the sea,[m]
when its waves[n] crash[o] and foam,
and the mountains shake[p] before the surging sea.[q] (Selah)
The river’s channels bring joy to the city of God,[r]
the special, holy dwelling place of[s] the Most High.[t]
God lives within it,[u] it cannot be moved.[v]
God rescues it[w] at the break of dawn.[x]
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms are overthrown.[y]
God[z] gives a shout,[aa] the earth dissolves.[ab]
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is on our side.[ac]
The God of Jacob[ad] is our stronghold.[ae] (Selah)
Come, Witness the exploits[af] of the Lord,
who brings devastation to the earth.[ag]
He brings an end to wars throughout the earth.[ah]
He shatters[ai] the bow and breaks[aj] the spear;
he burns[ak] the shields with fire.[al]
10 He says,[am] “Stop your striving and recognize[an] that I am God.
I will be exalted[ao] over[ap] the nations! I will be exalted over[aq] the earth!”
11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is on our side![ar]
The God of Jacob[as] is our stronghold![at] (Selah)

Psalm 47[au]

For the music director, by the Korahites; a psalm.

47 All you nations, clap your hands.
Shout out to God in celebration.[av]
For the Lord Most High[aw] is awe-inspiring;[ax]
he is the great king who rules the whole earth![ay]
He subdued nations beneath us[az]
and countries[ba] under our feet.
He picked out for us a special land[bb]
to be a source of pride for[bc] Jacob,[bd] whom he loves.[be] (Selah)
God has ascended his throne[bf] amid loud shouts;[bg]
the Lord has ascended amid the blaring of ram’s horns.[bh]
Sing to God! Sing!
Sing to our king! Sing!
For God is king of the whole earth.
Sing a well-written song.[bi]
God reigns[bj] over the nations.
God sits on his holy throne.
The nobles of the nations assemble,
along with the people of the God of Abraham,[bk]
for God has authority over the rulers[bl] of the earth.
He is highly exalted.[bm]

Psalm 48[bn]

A song, a psalm by the Korahites.

48 The Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise
in the city of our God,[bo] his holy hill.
It is lofty and pleasing to look at,[bp]
a source of joy to the whole earth.[bq]
Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon;[br]
it is the city of the great king.
God is in its fortresses;
he reveals himself as its defender.[bs]
For[bt] look, the kings assemble;[bu]
they advance together.
As soon as they see,[bv] they are shocked;[bw]
they are terrified, they quickly retreat.[bx]
Look at them shake uncontrollably,[by]
like a woman writhing in childbirth.[bz]
With an east wind
you shatter[ca] the large ships.[cb]
We heard about God’s mighty deeds; now we have seen them,[cc]
in the city of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,[cd]
in the city of our God.
God makes it permanently secure.[ce] (Selah)
Within your temple
we reflect on your loyal love, O God.
10 The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth
is worthy of your reputation, O God.[cf]
You execute justice.[cg]
11 Mount Zion rejoices;
the towns[ch] of Judah are happy,[ci]
because of your acts of judgment.[cj]
12 Walk around[ck] Zion. Encircle it.
Count its towers.
13 Consider its defenses.[cl]
Walk through[cm] its fortresses,
so you can tell the next generation about it.[cn]
14 For God, our God, is our defender forever.[co]
He guides[cp] us.[cq]

Psalm 49[cr]

For the music director, a psalm by the Korahites.

49 Listen to this, all you nations.
Pay attention, all you inhabitants of the world.[cs]
Pay attention, all you people,[ct]
both rich and poor.
I will declare a wise saying;[cu]
I will share my profound thoughts.[cv]
I will learn a song that imparts wisdom;
I will then sing my insightful song to the accompaniment of a harp.[cw]
Why should I be afraid in times of trouble,[cx]
when the sinful deeds of deceptive men threaten to overwhelm me?[cy]
They trust[cz] in their wealth
and boast[da] in their great riches.
Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother;[db]
he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price[dc]
(the ransom price for a human life[dd] is too high,
and people go to their final destiny),[de]
so that he might continue to live[df] forever
and not experience death.[dg]
10 Surely[dh] one sees[di] that even wise people die;[dj]
fools and spiritually insensitive people all pass away[dk]
and leave their wealth to others.[dl]
11 Their grave becomes their permanent residence,
their eternal dwelling place.[dm]
They name their lands after themselves,[dn]
12 but, despite their wealth, people do not last.[do]
They are like animals[dp] that perish.[dq]
13 This is the destiny of fools,[dr]
and of those who approve of their philosophy.[ds] (Selah)
14 They will travel to Sheol like sheep,[dt]
with death as their shepherd.[du]
The godly will rule[dv] over them when the day of vindication dawns.[dw]
Sheol will consume their bodies, and they will no longer live in impressive houses.[dx]
15 But[dy] God will rescue[dz] my life[ea] from the power[eb] of Sheol;
certainly[ec] he will pull me to safety.[ed] (Selah)
16 Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich[ee]
and his wealth multiplies.[ef]
17 For he will take nothing with him when he dies;
his wealth will not follow him down into the grave.[eg]
18 He pronounces this blessing on himself while he is alive:
“May men praise you, for you have done well.”
19 But he will join his ancestors;[eh]
they will never again see the light of day.[ei]
20 Wealthy people do not understand;[ej]
they are like animals[ek] that perish.[el]

Psalm 50[em]

A psalm by Asaph.

50 El, God, the Lord[en] has spoken,
and summoned the earth to come from the east and west.[eo]
From Zion, the most beautiful of all places,[ep]
God has come in splendor.[eq]
“May our God come
and not be silent.”
Consuming fire goes ahead of him,
and all around him a storm rages.[er]
He summons the heavens above,
as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people.[es]
He says:[et]
“Assemble my covenant people before me,[eu]
those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice.”[ev]
The heavens declare his fairness,[ew]
for God is judge.[ex] (Selah)
He says:[ey]
“Listen, my people. I am speaking!
Listen, Israel. I am accusing you.[ez]
I am God, your God!
I am not condemning[fa] you because of your sacrifices,
or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me.[fb]
I do not need to take[fc] a bull from your household
or goats from your sheepfolds.
10 For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me,
as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills.[fd]
11 I keep track of[fe] every bird in the hills,
and the insects[ff] of the field are mine.
12 Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you,
for the world and all it contains belong to me.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls?
Do I drink the blood of goats?[fg]
14 Present to God a thank offering.
Repay your vows to the Most High.[fh]
15 Pray to me when you are in trouble.[fi]
I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”[fj]
16 God says this to the evildoer:[fk]
“How can you declare my commands,
and talk about my covenant?[fl]
17 For you hate instruction
and reject my words.[fm]
18 When you see a thief, you join him;[fn]
you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives.[fo]
19 You do damage with words,[fp]
and use your tongue to deceive.[fq]
20 You plot against your brother;[fr]
you slander your own brother.[fs]
21 When you did these things, I was silent,[ft]
so you thought I was exactly like you.[fu]
But now I will condemn[fv] you
and state my case against you.[fw]
22 Carefully consider this, you who reject God.[fx]
Otherwise I will rip you to shreds[fy]
and no one will be able to rescue you.
23 Whoever presents a thank offering honors me.[fz]
To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver.”[ga]

Psalm 51[gb]

For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[gc]

51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[gd] your loyal love.
Because of[ge] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[gf]
Wash away my wrongdoing.[gg]
Cleanse me of my sin.[gh]
For I am aware of[gi] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[gj]
Against you—you above all[gk]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[gl] you are just when you confront me;[gm]
you are right when you condemn me.[gn]
Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[go]
Look,[gp] you desire[gq] integrity in the inner man;[gr]
you want me to possess wisdom.[gs]
Cleanse me[gt] with hyssop[gu] and I will be pure;[gv]
wash me[gw] and I will be whiter than snow.[gx]
Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[gy]
May the bones[gz] you crushed rejoice.[ha]
Hide your face[hb] from my sins.
Wipe away[hc] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[hd]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[he]
11 Do not reject me.[hf]
Do not take your holy Spirit[hg] away from me.[hh]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[hi]
13 Then I will teach[hj] rebels your merciful ways,[hk]
and sinners will turn[hl] to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,[hm] O God, the God who delivers me.
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your righteousness.[hn]
15 O Lord, give me the words.[ho]
Then my mouth will praise you.[hp]
16 Certainly[hq] you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it;[hr]
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.[hs]
17 The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit[ht]
O God, a humble and repentant heart[hu] you will not reject.[hv]
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her.[hw]
Fortify[hx] the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will accept[hy] the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed[hz] on your altar.[ia]

Psalm 52[ib]

For the music director, a well-written song[ic] by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: “David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech.”[id]

52 Why do you boast about your evil plans,[ie] O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long.[if]
Your tongue carries out your destructive plans;[ig]
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver.[ih]
You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.[ii] (Selah)
You love to use all the words that destroy,[ij]
and the tongue that deceives.
Yet[ik] God will make you a permanent heap of ruins.[il]
He will scoop you up[im] and remove you from your home;[in]
he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah)
When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe,
and will mock the evildoer, saying:[io]
“Look, here is the man who would not make[ip] God his protector.
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”[iq]
But I[ir] am like a flourishing[is] olive tree in the house of God;
I continually[it] trust in God’s loyal love.
I will continually[iu] thank you when[iv] you execute judgment;[iw]
I will rely on[ix] you,[iy] for your loyal followers know you are good.[iz]

Psalm 53[ja]

For the music director, according to the machalath style;[jb] a well-written song[jc] by David.

53 Fools say to themselves,[jd] “There is no God.”[je]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[jf]
none of them does what is right.[jg]
God looks down from heaven[jh] at the human race,[ji]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[jj] and seeks God.[jk]
Everyone rejects God;[jl]
they are all morally corrupt.[jm]
None of them does what is right,[jn]
not even one!
All those who behave wickedly[jo] do not understand[jp]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to God.
They are absolutely terrified,[jq]
even by things that do not normally cause fear.[jr]
For God annihilates[js] those who attack you.[jt]
You are able to humiliate them because God has rejected them.[ju]
I wish the deliverance[jv] of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the well-being of his people,[jw]
may Jacob rejoice,[jx]
may Israel be happy![jy]

Psalm 54[jz]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song[ka] by David. It was written when the Ziphites came and informed Saul: “David is hiding with us.”[kb]

54 O God, deliver me by your name.[kc]
Vindicate me[kd] by your power.
O God, listen to my prayer.
Pay attention to what I say.[ke]
For foreigners[kf] attack me;[kg]
ruthless men, who do not respect God, seek my life.[kh] (Selah)
Look, God is my deliverer.[ki]
The Lord is among those who support me.[kj]
May those who wait to ambush me[kk] be repaid for their evil.[kl]
As a demonstration of your faithfulness,[km] destroy them.
With a freewill offering I will sacrifice[kn] to you.
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
Surely[ko] he rescues me from all trouble,[kp]
and I triumph over my enemies.[kq]

Psalm 55[kr]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song[ks] by David.

55 Listen, O God, to my prayer.
Do not ignore[kt] my appeal for mercy.
Pay attention to me and answer me.
I am so upset[ku] and distressed,[kv] I am beside myself,[kw]
because of what the enemy says,[kx]
and because of how the wicked[ky] pressure me,[kz]
for they hurl trouble[la] down upon me[lb]
and angrily attack me.
My heart beats violently[lc] within me;
the horrors of death overcome me.[ld]
Fear and panic overpower me;[le]
terror overwhelms[lf] me.
I say,[lg] “I wish I had wings like a dove.
I would fly away and settle in a safe place.
Look, I will escape to a distant place;
I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah)
I will hurry off to a place that is safe
from the strong wind[lh] and the gale.”
Confuse them,[li] O Lord.
Frustrate their plans.[lj]
For I see violence and conflict in the city.
10 Day and night they walk around on its walls,[lk]
while wickedness and destruction[ll] are within it.
11 Disaster is within it;
violence[lm] and deceit do not depart from its public square.
12 Indeed,[ln] it is not an enemy who insults me,
or else I could bear it;
it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me,[lo]
or else I could hide from him.
13 But it is you,[lp] a man like me,[lq]
my close friend in whom I confided.[lr]
14 We would share personal thoughts with each other;[ls]
in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.
15 May death destroy them.[lt]
May they go down alive into Sheol.[lu]
For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
16 As for me, I will call out to God,
and the Lord will deliver me.
17 During the evening, morning, and noontime
I will lament and moan,[lv]
and he will hear[lw] me.[lx]
18 He will rescue[ly] me and protect me from those who attack me,[lz]
even though[ma] they greatly outnumber me.[mb]
19 God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago,
will hear and humiliate them.[mc] (Selah)
They refuse to change,
and do not fear God.[md]
20 He[me] attacks[mf] his friends;[mg]
he breaks his solemn promises to them.[mh]
21 His words are as smooth as butter,[mi]
but he harbors animosity in his heart.[mj]
His words seem softer than oil,
but they are really like sharp swords.[mk]
22 Throw your burden[ml] upon the Lord,
and he will sustain you.[mm]
He will never allow the godly to be shaken.[mn]
23 But you, O God, will bring them[mo] down to the deep Pit.[mp]
Violent and deceitful people[mq] will not live even half a normal lifespan.[mr]
But as for me, I trust in you.

Psalm 56[ms]

For the music director, according to the yonath-elem-rekhoqim style;[mt] a prayer[mu] of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath.[mv]

56 Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me.[mw]
All day long hostile enemies[mx] are tormenting me.[my]
Those who anticipate my defeat[mz] attack me all day long.
Indeed,[na] many are fighting against me, O Exalted One.[nb]
When[nc] I am afraid,
I trust in you.
In God—I boast in his promise[nd]
in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can mere men[ne] do to me?[nf]
All day long they cause me trouble;[ng]
they make a habit of plotting my demise.[nh]
They stalk[ni] and lurk;[nj]
they watch my every step,[nk]
as[nl] they prepare to take my life.[nm]
Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape.[nn]
In your anger[no] bring down the nations,[np] O God.
You keep track of my misery.[nq]
Put my tears in your leather container.[nr]
Are they not recorded in your scroll?[ns]
My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help;[nt]
I know that God is on my side.[nu]
10 In God—I boast in his promise[nv]
in the Lord—I boast in his promise[nw]
11 in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can mere men[nx] do to me?[ny]
12 I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God;[nz]
I will give you the thank offerings you deserve,[oa]
13 when you deliver[ob] my life from death.
You keep my feet from stumbling,[oc]
so that I might serve[od] God as I enjoy life.[oe]

Psalm 57[of]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[og] a prayer[oh] of David, written when he fled from Saul into the cave.[oi]

57 Have mercy on me, O God. Have mercy on me.
For in you I have taken shelter.[oj]
In the shadow of your wings[ok] I take shelter
until trouble passes.
I cry out for help to God Most High,[ol]
to the God who vindicates[om] me.
May he send help from heaven and deliver me[on]
from my enemies who hurl insults.[oo] (Selah)
May God send his loyal love and faithfulness.
I am surrounded by lions;
I lie down[op] among those who want to devour me,[oq]
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.[or]
Rise up[os] above the sky, O God.
May your splendor cover the whole earth.[ot]
They have prepared a net to trap me;[ou]
I am discouraged.[ov]
They have dug a pit for me.[ow]
They will fall[ox] into it. (Selah)
I am determined,[oy] O God. I am determined.
I will sing and praise you.
Awake, my soul![oz]
Awake, O stringed instrument and harp!
I will wake up at dawn.[pa]
I will give you thanks before the nations, O Lord.
I will sing praises to you before foreigners.[pb]
10 For your loyal love extends beyond the sky,[pc]
and your faithfulness reaches the clouds.
11 Rise up[pd] above the sky, O God.
May your splendor cover the whole earth.[pe]

Psalm 58[pf]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[pg] a prayer[ph] of David.

58 Do you rulers really pronounce just decisions?[pi]
Do you judge people[pj] fairly?
No![pk] You plan how to do what is unjust;[pl]
you deal out violence in the earth.[pm]
The wicked turn aside from birth;[pn]
liars go astray as soon as they are born.[po]
Their venom is like that of a snake,[pp]
like a deaf serpent[pq] that does not hear,[pr]
that does not respond to[ps] the magicians,
or to a skilled snake charmer.
O God, break the teeth in their mouths!
Smash the jawbones of the lions, O Lord.
Let them disappear[pt] like water that flows away.[pu]
Let them wither like grass.[pv]
Let them be[pw] like a snail that melts away as it moves along.[px]
Let them be like[py] stillborn babies[pz] that never see the sun.
Before the kindling is even placed under your pots,[qa]
he[qb] will sweep it away along with both the raw and cooked meat.[qc]
10 The godly[qd] will rejoice when they see vengeance carried out;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Then[qe] observers[qf] will say,
“Yes indeed, the godly are rewarded.[qg]
Yes indeed, there is a God who judges[qh] in the earth.”

Psalm 59[qi]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[qj] a prayer[qk] of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him.[ql]

59 Deliver me from my enemies, my God.
Protect me[qm] from those who attack me.[qn]
Deliver me from evildoers.[qo]
Rescue me from violent men.[qp]
For look, they wait to ambush me;[qq]
powerful men stalk[qr] me,
but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O Lord.[qs]
Though I have done nothing wrong,[qt] they are anxious to attack.[qu]
Spring into action and help me. Take notice of me.[qv]
You, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[qw] the God of Israel,
rouse yourself and punish[qx] all the nations.
Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers. (Selah)
They return in the evening;
they growl[qy] like dogs
and prowl around outside[qz] the city.
Look, they hurl insults at me
and openly threaten to kill me,[ra]
for they say,[rb]
“Who hears?”
But you, O Lord, laugh in disgust at them;[rc]
you taunt[rd] all the nations.
You are my source of strength. I will wait for you.[re]
For God is my refuge.[rf]
10 The God who loves me will help me;[rg]
God will enable me to triumph over[rh] my enemies.[ri]
11 Do not strike them dead suddenly,
because then my people might forget the lesson.[rj]
Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down,
O Lord who shields us.[rk]
12 They speak sinful words.[rl]
So let them be trapped by their own pride
and by the curses and lies they speak.
13 Angrily wipe them out. Wipe them out so they vanish.
Let them know that God rules
over Jacob and to the ends of the earth. (Selah)
14 They return in the evening;
they growl[rm] like dogs
and prowl around outside[rn] the city.
15 They wander around looking for something to eat;
they refuse to sleep until they are full.[ro]
16 As for me, I will sing about your strength;
I will praise your loyal love in the morning.
For you are my refuge[rp]
and my place of shelter when I face trouble.[rq]
17 You are my source of strength. I will sing praises to you.[rr]
For God is my refuge,[rs] the God who loves me.[rt]

Psalm 60[ru]

For the music director, according to the shushan-eduth style;[rv] a prayer[rw] of David written to instruct others.[rx] It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down[ry] 12,000 Edomites[rz] in the Valley of Salt.[sa]

60 O God, you have rejected us.[sb]
You suddenly turned on us in your anger.[sc]
Please restore us![sd]
You made the earth quake; you split it open.[se]
Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall.[sf]
You have made your people experience hard times;[sg]
you have made us drink intoxicating wine.[sh]
You have given your loyal followers[si] a rallying flag,
so that they might seek safety from the bow.[sj] (Selah)
Deliver by your power[sk] and answer me,[sl]
so that the ones you love may be safe.[sm]
God has spoken in his sanctuary:[sn]
“I will triumph. I will parcel out Shechem;
the Valley of Sukkoth I will measure off.[so]
Gilead belongs to me,
as does Manasseh.[sp]
Ephraim is my helmet,[sq]
Judah my royal scepter.[sr]
Moab is my washbasin.[ss]
I will make Edom serve me.[st]
I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”[su]
Who will lead me into the fortified city?
Who will bring me to Edom?[sv]
10 Have you not rejected us, O God?
O God, you do not go into battle with our armies.
11 Give us help against the enemy,
for any help men might offer is futile.[sw]
12 By God’s power we will conquer;[sx]
he will trample down[sy] our enemies.

Psalm 61[sz]

For the music director, to be played on a stringed instrument; written by David.

61 O God, hear my cry for help.
Pay attention to my prayer.
From the remotest place on earth[ta]
I call out to you in my despair.[tb]
Lead me[tc] up to a rocky summit where I can be safe.[td]
Indeed,[te] you are[tf] my shelter,
a strong tower that protects me from the enemy.[tg]
I will be a permanent guest in your home;[th]
I will find shelter in the protection of your wings.[ti] (Selah)
For you, O God, hear my vows;
you grant me the reward that belongs to your loyal followers.[tj]
Give the king long life.
Make his lifetime span several generations.[tk]
May he reign[tl] forever before God.
Decree that your loyal love and faithfulness should protect him.[tm]
Then I will sing praises to your name continually,[tn]
as I fulfill[to] my vows day after day.

Psalm 62[tp]

For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.

62 For God alone I patiently wait;[tq]
he is the one who delivers me.[tr]
He alone is my protector[ts] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[tt] I will not be upended.[tu]
How long will you threaten[tv] a man like me?
All of you are murderers,[tw]
as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.[tx]
They[ty] spend all their time planning how to bring their victim[tz] down.[ua]
They love to use deceit;[ub]
they pronounce blessings with their mouths,
but inwardly they utter curses.[uc] (Selah)
Patiently wait for God alone, my soul![ud]
For he is the one who gives me hope.[ue]
He alone is my protector[uf] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[ug] I will not be shaken.
God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.[uh]
Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him.[ui]
God is our shelter. (Selah)
Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.[uj]
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.[uk]
10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.[ul]
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.[um]
If wealth increases, do not become attached to it.[un]
11 God has declared one principle;
two principles I have heard:[uo]
God is strong,[up]
12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.[uq]
For you repay men for what they do.[ur]

Psalm 63[us]

A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.[ut]

63 O God, you are my God. I long for you.[uu]
My soul thirsts[uv] for you,
my flesh yearns for you,
in a dry and parched[uw] land where there is no water.
Yes,[ux] in the sanctuary I have seen you,[uy]
and witnessed[uz] your power and splendor.
Because[va] experiencing[vb] your loyal love is better than life itself,
my lips will praise you.
For this reason[vc] I will praise you while I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.[vd]
As with choice meat[ve] you satisfy my soul.[vf]
My mouth joyfully praises you,[vg]
whenever[vh] I remember you on my bed,
and think about you during the nighttime hours.
For you are my deliverer;[vi]
under your wings[vj] I rejoice.
My soul[vk] pursues you;[vl]
your right hand upholds me.
Enemies seek to destroy my life,[vm]
but they will descend into the depths of the earth.[vn]
10 Each one will be handed over to the sword;[vo]
their corpses will be eaten by jackals.[vp]
11 But the king[vq] will rejoice in God;
everyone who takes oaths in his name[vr] will boast,
for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.[vs]

Psalm 64[vt]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

64 Listen to me,[vu] O God, as I offer my lament!
Protect[vv] my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks.[vw]
Hide me from the plots of evil men,
from the crowd of evildoers.[vx]
They[vy] sharpen their tongues like swords;
they aim their arrows, a slanderous charge,[vz]
in order to shoot down the innocent[wa] in secluded places.
They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation.[wb]
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed.[wc]
They plan how to hide[wd] snares,
and boast,[we] “Who will see them?”[wf]
They devise[wg] unjust schemes;
they disguise[wh] a well-conceived plot.[wi]
Man’s inner thoughts cannot be discovered.[wj]
But God will shoot[wk] at them;
suddenly they will be[wl] wounded by an arrow.[wm]
Their slander will bring about their demise.[wn]
All who see them will shudder,[wo]
and all people will fear.[wp]
They will proclaim what God has done,[wq]
and reflect on his deeds.
10 The godly will rejoice in the Lord
and take shelter in him.
All the morally upright[wr] will boast.[ws]

Psalm 65[wt]

For the music director, a psalm of David, a song.

65 Praise awaits you,[wu] O God, in Zion.
Vows made to you are fulfilled.
You hear prayers;[wv]
all people approach you.[ww]
Our record of sins overwhelms me,[wx]
but you forgive[wy] our acts of rebellion.
How blessed[wz] is the one whom you choose,
and allow to live in your palace courts.[xa]
May we be satisfied with the good things of your house—
your holy palace.[xb]
You answer our prayers by performing awesome acts of deliverance,
O God, our savior.[xc]
All the ends of the earth trust in you,[xd]
as well as those living across the wide seas.[xe]
You created the mountains by your power,[xf]
and demonstrated your strength.[xg]
You calmed the raging seas[xh]
and their roaring waves,
as well as the commotion made by the nations.[xi]
Even those living in the remotest areas are awestruck by your acts;[xj]
you cause those living in the east and west to praise you.[xk]
You visit the earth and give it rain;[xl]
you make it rich and fertile.[xm]
God’s streams are full of water;[xn]
you provide grain for the people of the earth,[xo]
for you have prepared the earth in this way.[xp]
10 You saturate[xq] its furrows,
and soak[xr] its plowed ground.[xs]
With rain showers you soften its soil,[xt]
and make its crops grow.[xu]
11 You crown the year with your good blessings,[xv]
and you leave abundance in your wake.[xw]
12 The pastures in the wilderness glisten with moisture,[xx]
and the hills are clothed with joy.[xy]
13 The meadows are clothed with sheep,
and the valleys are covered with grain.
They shout joyfully, yes, they sing.

Psalm 66[xz]

For the music director, a song, a psalm.

66 Shout out praise to God, all the earth!
Sing praises about the majesty of his reputation.[ya]
Give him the honor he deserves![yb]
Say to God:
“How awesome are your deeds!
Because of your great power your enemies cower in fear[yc] before you.
All the earth worships[yd] you
and sings praises to you.
They sing praises to your name.” (Selah)
Come and witness[ye] God’s exploits![yf]
His acts on behalf of people are awesome.[yg]
He turned the sea into dry land;[yh]
they passed through the river on foot.[yi]
Let us rejoice in him there.[yj]
He rules[yk] by his power forever;
he watches[yl] the nations.
Stubborn rebels should not exalt[ym] themselves. (Selah)
Praise[yn] our God, you nations.
Loudly proclaim his praise.[yo]
He preserves our lives[yp]
and does not allow our feet to slip.
10 For[yq] you, O God, tested us;
you purified us like refined silver.
11 You led us into a trap;[yr]
you caused us to suffer.[ys]
12 You allowed men to ride over our heads;
we passed through fire and water,
but you brought us out into a wide open place.[yt]
13 I will enter[yu] your temple with burnt sacrifices;
I will fulfill the vows I made to you,
14 which my lips uttered
and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer up to you fattened animals as burnt sacrifices,
along with the smell of sacrificial rams.
I will offer cattle and goats. (Selah)
16 Come! Listen, all you who are loyal to God.[yv]
I will declare what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him for help[yw]
and praised him with my tongue.[yx]
18 If I had harbored sin in my heart,[yy]
the Lord would not have listened.
19 However, God heard;
he listened to my prayer.
20 God deserves praise,[yz]
for[za] he did not reject my prayer
or abandon his love for me.[zb]

Psalm 67[zc]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm, a song.

67 May God show us his favor[zd] and bless us.[ze]
May he smile on us.[zf] (Selah)
Then those living on earth will know what you are like;
all nations will know how you deliver your people.[zg]
Let the nations thank you, O God.
Let all the nations thank you.[zh]
Let foreigners[zi] rejoice and celebrate.
For you execute justice among the nations,
and govern the people living on earth.[zj] (Selah)
Let the nations thank you, O God.
Let all the nations thank you.[zk]
The earth yields its crops.
May God, our God, bless us.
May God bless us.[zl]
Then all the ends of the earth will give him the honor he deserves.[zm]

Psalm 68[zn]

For the music director, by David, a psalm, a song.

68 God springs into action.[zo]
His enemies scatter;
his adversaries[zp] run from him.[zq]
As smoke is driven away by the wind, so you drive them away.[zr]
As wax melts before fire,
so the wicked are destroyed before God.
But the godly[zs] are happy;
they rejoice before God
and are overcome with joy.[zt]
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name.
Exalt the one who rides on the clouds.[zu]
For the Lord is his name.[zv]
Rejoice before him.
He is a father to the fatherless
and an advocate for widows.[zw]
God rules from his holy dwelling place.[zx]
God settles in their own homes those who have been deserted;[zy]
he frees prisoners and grants them prosperity.[zz]
But sinful rebels live in the desert.[aaa]
O God, when you lead your people into battle,[aab]
when you march through the wastelands,[aac] (Selah)
the earth shakes.
Yes, the heavens pour down rain
before God, the God of Sinai,[aad]
before God, the God of Israel.[aae]
O God, you cause abundant showers to fall[aaf] on your chosen people.[aag]
When they[aah] are tired, you sustain them,[aai]
10 for you live among them.[aaj]
You sustain the oppressed with your good blessings, O God.
11 The Lord speaks;[aak]
many, many women spread the good news.[aal]
12 Kings leading armies run away—they run away![aam]
The lovely lady[aan] of the house divides up the loot.
13 When[aao] you lie down among the sheepfolds,[aap]
the wings of the dove are covered with silver
and with glittering gold.[aaq]
14 When the Sovereign One[aar] scatters kings,[aas]
let it snow[aat] on Zalmon.
15 The mountain of Bashan[aau] is a towering mountain;[aav]
the mountain of Bashan is a mountain with many peaks.[aaw]
16 Why do you look with envy,[aax] O mountains[aay] with many peaks,
at the mountain where God has decided to live?[aaz]
Indeed[aba] the Lord will live there[abb] permanently.
17 God has countless chariots;
they number in the thousands.[abc]
The Lord comes from Sinai in holy splendor.[abd]
18 You ascend on high;[abe]
you have taken many captives.[abf]
You receive tribute[abg] from[abh] men,
including even sinful rebels.
Indeed, the Lord God lives there.[abi]
19 The Lord deserves praise.[abj]
Day after day[abk] he carries our burden,
the God who delivers us. (Selah)
20 Our God is a God who delivers;
the Lord, the Sovereign Lord, can rescue from death.[abl]
21 Indeed, God strikes the heads of his enemies,
the hairy foreheads of those who persist in rebellion.[abm]
22 The Lord says,
“I will retrieve them[abn] from Bashan.
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
23 so that your feet may stomp[abo] in their blood,
and your dogs may eat their portion of the enemies’ corpses.”[abp]
24 They[abq] see your processions, O God—
the processions of my God, my king, who marches along in holy splendor.[abr]
25 Singers walk in front;
musicians follow playing their stringed instruments,[abs]
in the midst of young women playing tambourines.[abt]
26 In your large assemblies praise God,
the Lord, in the assemblies of Israel.[abu]
27 There is little Benjamin, their ruler,[abv]
and the princes of Judah in their robes,[abw]
along with the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.
28 God has decreed that you will be powerful.[abx]
O God, you who have acted on our behalf, demonstrate your power.
29 Because of your temple in Jerusalem,[aby]
kings bring tribute to you.
30 Sound your battle cry against[abz] the wild beast of the reeds,[aca]
and the nations that assemble like a herd of calves led by bulls.[acb]
They humble themselves[acc] and offer gold and silver as tribute.[acd]
God[ace] scatters[acf] the nations that like to do battle.
31 They come with red cloth[acg] from Egypt.
Ethiopia[ach] voluntarily offers tribute[aci] to God.
32 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God.
Sing praises to the Lord, (Selah)
33 to the one who rides through the sky from ancient times.[acj]
Look! He thunders loudly.[ack]
34 Acknowledge God’s power,[acl]
his sovereignty over Israel,
and the power he reveals in the skies.[acm]
35 You are awe-inspiring, O God, as you emerge from your holy temple.[acn]
It is the God of Israel[aco] who gives the people power and strength.
God deserves praise![acp]

Psalm 69[acq]

For the music director, according to the tune of “Lilies”;[acr] by David.

69 Deliver me, O God,
for the water has reached my neck.[acs]
I sink into the deep mire
where there is no solid ground;[act]
I am in[acu] deep water,
and the current overpowers me.
I am exhausted from shouting for help.
My throat is sore;[acv]
my eyes grow tired from looking for my God.[acw]
Those who hate me without cause
are more numerous than the hairs of my head.
Those who want to destroy me,
my enemies for no reason,[acx]
outnumber me.[acy]
They make me repay what I did not steal.[acz]
O God, you are aware of my foolish sins;[ada]
my guilt is not hidden from you.[adb]
Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me,
O Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[adc]
Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me,
O God of Israel.
For I suffer[add] humiliation for your sake[ade]
and am thoroughly disgraced.[adf]
My own brothers treat me like a stranger;
they act as if I were a foreigner.[adg]
Certainly[adh] zeal for[adi] your house[adj] consumes me;
I endure the insults of those who insult you.[adk]
10 I weep and refrain from eating food,[adl]
which causes others to insult me.[adm]
11 I wear sackcloth
and they ridicule me.[adn]
12 Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me;
drunkards mock me in their songs.[ado]
13 O Lord, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me.[adp]
O God, because of your great loyal love,
answer me with your faithful deliverance.[adq]
14 Rescue me from the mud. Don’t let me sink.
Deliver me[adr] from those who hate me,
from the deep water.
15 Don’t let the current overpower me.
Don’t let the deep swallow me up.
Don’t let the Pit[ads] devour me.[adt]
16 Answer me, O Lord, for your loyal love is good.[adu]
Because of your great compassion, turn toward me.
17 Do not ignore[adv] your servant,
for I am in trouble. Answer me right away.[adw]
18 Come near me and redeem me.[adx]
Because of my enemies, rescue me.
19 You know how I am insulted, humiliated, and disgraced;
you can see all my enemies.[ady]
20 Their insults are painful[adz] and make me lose heart;[aea]
I look[aeb] for sympathy, but receive none,[aec]
for comforters, but find none.
21 They put bitter poison[aed] into my food,
and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink.[aee]
