Bible in 90 Days
Yahweh Will Rebuild Israel
11 “In that day I will (A)raise up the fallen [a](B)booth of David
And wall up its (C)breaches;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the (D)ancient days,
12 (E)That they may possess the remnant of (F)Edom
And all the [b]nations who are (G)called by My name,”
Declares Yahweh who does this.
13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh,
“When the (H)plowman will overtake the reaper
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
When the (I)mountains will drip [c]sweet (J)wine
And all the hills will melt.
14 Also I will (K)restore the [d]captivity of My people Israel,
And they will (L)rebuild the desolated cities and live in them;
They will also (M)plant vineyards and drink their wine
And make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will also plant them on their land,
And (N)they will not again be uprooted from their land
Which I have given them,”
Says Yahweh your God.
Edom Will Be Brought Down
1 The vision of Obadiah.
Thus says Lord [e]Yahweh concerning (O)Edom—
(P)We have heard a report from Yahweh,
And an (Q)envoy has been sent among the nations saying,
“(R)Arise! And let us arise against her for battle”—
2 “Behold, I will make you (S)small among the nations;
You are greatly despised.
3 The (T)arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
You who dwell in the clefts of [f]the (U)cliff,
In the height of your habitation,
Who says in his heart,
‘(V)Who will bring me down to earth?’
4 Though you (W)build loftily like the eagle,
Though you set your nest among the (X)stars,
From there I will bring you down,” declares Yahweh.
5 “If (Y)thieves came to you,
If [g]robbers by night—
Oh how you will be ruined!—
Would they not thieve only [h]until they had enough?
If grape gatherers came to you,
(Z)Would they not allow some gleanings to remain?
6 Oh how Esau will be (AA)searched out
And his hidden treasures ransacked!
7 All the (AB)men who have [i]a covenant with you
Will send you forth to the border,
And the men at peace with you
Will deceive you and overpower you.
They who eat your (AC)bread
Will set an ambush for you.
(There is (AD)no discernment [j]in him.)
8 Will I not on that day,” declares Yahweh,
“(AE)Cause the wise men to perish from Edom
And discernment from the mountain of Esau?
9 Then your (AF)mighty men will be dismayed, O (AG)Teman,
So that each one may be (AH)cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.
10 “Because of (AI)violence to your brother Jacob,
[k]You will be covered with shame,
(AJ)And you will be cut off forever.
11 On the day that you (AK)stood aloof,
On the day that strangers took his wealth captive
And foreigners entered his gate
And (AL)cast lots for Jerusalem—
(AM)You too were as one of them.
12 (AN)Now do not look on your brother’s day with triumph,
The day of his misfortune.
And (AO)do not be glad over the sons of Judah
In the day when they perish;
And (AP)do not [l]let your mouth speak great things
In the day of their distress.
13 Do not enter the gate of My people
In the (AQ)day of their disaster.
Indeed, you, do not look on their calamity with triumph
In the day of their disaster.
And do not (AR)send out for their wealth
In the day of their disaster.
14 Do not (AS)stand at the fork of the road
To cut down those among them who escape;
And do not deliver over their survivors
In the day of their distress.
The Day of Yahweh Is Near
15 “For the (AT)day of Yahweh draws near on all the nations.
(AU)As you have done, it will be done to you.
Your (AV)dealings will return on your own head.
16 Because just as you all (AW)drank on (AX)My holy mountain,
All the nations (AY)will drink continually.
They will drink and [m]swallow,
And they will be as if they never were.
17 But on Mount (AZ)Zion there will be those who escape,
And it will be holy.
And the house of Jacob will (BA)possess their possessions.
18 Then the house of Jacob will be a (BB)fire
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau will be as stubble.
And they will set [n]them on fire and consume [o]them
So that there will be (BC)no survivor of the house of Esau,”
For Yahweh has spoken.
The Kingdom of Yahweh
19 Then those of the [p]Negev will (BD)possess the mountain of Esau,
And those of the [q]Shephelah, the (BE)Philistine plain;
And they will (BF)possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
And Benjamin will possess Gilead.
20 And the exiles of this [r]military force of the sons of Israel,
Who are among the Canaanites as far as (BG)Zarephath,
And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad,
Will possess the (BH)cities of the Negev.
21 And the (BI)saviors will ascend Mount Zion
To judge the mountain of Esau,
And the (BJ)kingdom will belong to Yahweh.
Jonah Flees from Yahweh’s Presence
1 Now the word of [s]Yahweh came to (BK)Jonah the son of Amittai saying, 2 “Arise, go to (BL)Nineveh, the great city, and (BM)call out against it, for their (BN)evil has come up before Me.” 3 Yet Jonah arose to flee to (BO)Tarshish (BP)from the presence of Yahweh. So he went down to (BQ)Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, and [t]paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
4 But (BR)Yahweh hurled a great wind on the sea, and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship gave thought to [u]breaking apart. 5 Then the sailors became fearful, and every man cried to (BS)his god, and they (BT)hurled the [v]cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it [w]for them. But Jonah had gone down below into the innermost part of the vessel, lain down, and fallen deep asleep. 6 So the captain came near to him and said to him, “How is it that you are deeply sleeping? Arise, (BU)call on your god. Perhaps your (BV)god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.”
7 Then each man said to the other, “Come, let us [x](BW)have the lots fall so we may know on whose account this calamitous evil has struck us.” So they [y]had the lots fall, and the (BX)lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, “(BY)Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamitous evil struck us? What is your (BZ)occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a (CA)Hebrew, and I (CB)fear Yahweh, the (CC)God of heaven, who (CD)made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men became greatly fearful, and they said to him, “What is this you have done?” For the men knew that he was (CE)fleeing from the presence of Yahweh because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may become quiet [z]for us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12 So he said to them, “Lift me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become quiet [aa]for you, for I know that (CF)on account of me this great storm has come upon you.” 13 However, the men [ab]rowed desperately to return to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy against them. 14 Then they called on (CG)Yahweh and said, “Ah! O Yahweh, we earnestly pray, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life, and do not put innocent blood on us; for (CH)You, O Yahweh, as You have pleased You have done.”
15 So they lifted Jonah up and hurled him into the sea, and the sea (CI)stood still from its raging. 16 Then the men greatly feared Yahweh, and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made (CJ)vows.
17 [ac]And Yahweh appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the (CK)stomach of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah’s Prayer
2 [ad]Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God (CL)from the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said,
“I (CM)called out of my distress to Yahweh,
And He answered me.
I cried for help from the belly of (CN)Sheol;
You heard my voice.
3 For You had (CO)cast me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current surrounded me.
All Your (CP)breakers and waves passed over me.
4 So I said, ‘I have been (CQ)driven away from [ae]Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again (CR)toward Your holy temple.’
5 (CS)Water encompassed me to my very soul.
The great (CT)deep surrounded me,
Weeds were wrapped around my head.
6 I (CU)went down to the [af]base of the mountains.
The earth with its (CV)bars closed behind me forever,
But You have (CW)brought up my life from [ag]the pit, O Yahweh my God.
7 While my soul was (CX)fainting within me,
I (CY)remembered Yahweh,
And my (CZ)prayer came to You,
To (DA)Your holy temple.
8 Those who (DB)regard worthless idols
Forsake their lovingkindness,
9 But as for me, I will (DC)sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving.
That which I have vowed I will (DD)pay.
(DE)Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10 Then Yahweh spoke to the (DF)fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.
Ninevites Turn from Their Evil Ways
3 Now the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to (DG)Nineveh, the great city, and (DH)call out to it this very call which I am going to speak to you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was [ah]an (DI)exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk. 4 Then Jonah began to go into the city, one day’s walk; and he (DJ)called out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
5 And the [ai]people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a (DK)fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then the word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, laid aside his mantle from him, (DL)covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the [aj]ashes. 7 And he (DM)cried out and said,
“In Nineveh by the [ak]decree of the king and his nobles[al]: Do not let man, [am]animal, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat, and do not let them drink water.
8 But both man and [an]animal must be covered with sackcloth; and let [ao]men (DN)call on God with their strength that each may (DO)turn from his evil way and from the violence which is in [ap]his hands.
9 (DP)Who knows, God may turn and relent and turn away from His burning anger so that we will not perish.”
10 Then God saw their works, that they (DQ)turned from their evil way, so (DR)God [aq]relented concerning the evil which He had spoken He would [ar]bring upon them. And He did not [as]bring it upon them.
Jonah’s Anger
4 But this was a great evil to Jonah, and he became (DS)angry. 2 And he (DT)prayed to Yahweh and said, “Ah! O Yahweh, was not this my word to myself while I was still in my own land? Therefore I went ahead to (DU)flee to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a (DV)gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning evil. 3 So now, O Yahweh, please (DW)take my [at]life from me, for death is (DX)better to me than life.” 4 And Yahweh said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?”
5 Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of the city. And there he made a booth for himself and (DY)sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. 6 So Yahweh God appointed a [au]plant, and it came up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his miserable evil. And Jonah was [av]extremely glad about the plant. 7 But God appointed a worm at the [aw]breaking of dawn the next day, and it struck the plant, and [ax]it (DZ)dried up. 8 Then it happened that as the sun rose up, God appointed a scorching (EA)east wind, and the (EB)sun struck down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and asked with all his soul to die and said, “(EC)Death is better to me than life.”
9 Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” 10 Then Yahweh said, “You had pity on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which [ay]came to be overnight and perished [az]overnight. 11 So should I not (ED)have pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not (EE)know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many [ba](EF)animals?”
Calamity in Israel and Judah
1 The (EG)word of [bb]Yahweh which came to (EH)Micah of Moresheth in the days of (EI)Jotham, (EJ)Ahaz, and (EK)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he beheld concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
2 Hear, O peoples, all of [bc]you;
(EL)Give heed, O earth, as well as its fullness,
And let Lord Yahweh be a (EM)witness against you,
The Lord from His holy temple.
3 For behold, Yahweh is (EN)going forth from His place.
He will come down and (EO)tread on the high places of the [bd]earth.
4 (EP)The mountains will melt under Him,
And the valleys will be split,
Like wax before the fire,
Like water poured down a steep place.
5 All this is for the transgression of Jacob
And for the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the (EQ)transgression of Jacob?
Is it not (ER)Samaria?
What is the (ES)high [be]place of Judah?
Is it not Jerusalem?
6 So I will make Samaria a (ET)heap of ruins in the field,
(EU)Planting places for a vineyard.
And I will (EV)pour her stones down into the valley
And will (EW)lay bare her foundations.
7 And all of her (EX)graven images will be smashed,
And all of her earnings will be burned with fire
And all of her idols I will make desolate,
For she collected them from a (EY)harlot’s earnings,
And to the earnings of a harlot they will return.
8 Because of this I must lament and wail;
I must go (EZ)barefoot and naked;
I must make a lament like the (FA)jackals
And a mourning like the ostriches.
9 For her [bf](FB)wound is incurable,
For (FC)it has come to Judah;
It has reached the (FD)gate of my people,
Even to Jerusalem.
10 (FE)Tell it not in Gath,
Weep not at all.
At [bg]Beth-le-aphrah roll yourself in the dust.
11 [bh]Pass on by, inhabitant of [bi]Shaphir, in (FF)shameful nakedness.
The inhabitant of [bj](FG)Zaanan does not go out.
The lamentation of [bk]Beth-ezel: “He will take from you its [bl]support.”
12 For the inhabitant of [bm]Maroth
Writhes (FH)in waiting for good
Because a [bn]calamity has come down from Yahweh
To the (FI)gate of Jerusalem.
13 Harness the chariot to the team of horses,
O inhabitant of (FJ)Lachish—
She was the beginning of sin
To the daughter of Zion—
Because in you were found
The (FK)transgressions of Israel.
14 Therefore you will give parting (FL)gifts
On behalf of [bo]Moresheth-gath;
The houses of [bp](FM)Achzib will become a (FN)deception
To the kings of Israel.
15 Moreover, I will bring on you
The one who takes possession,
O inhabitant of [bq](FO)Mareshah.
The glory of Israel will enter (FP)Adullam.
16 Make yourself (FQ)bald and cut off your hair,
Because of the children of your delight;
Extend your baldness like the eagle,
For they will (FR)go from you into exile.
An Evil Time
2 Woe to those who (FS)devise wickedness,
Who work out evil on their beds!
(FT)When the light of the morning comes, they do it,
For it is in the (FU)power of their hands.
2 And they (FV)covet fields and then (FW)tear them away,
And houses, and take them away.
And they (FX)oppress a man and his house,
A man and his inheritance.
3 Therefore thus says Yahweh,
“Behold, I am (FY)devising against this (FZ)family an evil demise
From which you (GA)cannot remove your necks;
And you will not walk (GB)haughtily,
For it will be an (GC)evil time.
4 On that day they will (GD)take up against you a [br]taunt
And [bs](GE)utter a bitter wailing and say,
‘We are completely (GF)devastated!
He exchanges the portion of my people;
How He removes it from me!
To the faithless one, He (GG)apportions our fields.’
5 Therefore you will have no one [bt](GH)stretching a measuring line
For you by lot in the assembly of Yahweh.
6 ‘(GI)Do not speak, dripping out words,’ they say while dripping out words.
But if [bu]they do (GJ)not drip out words concerning these things,
(GK)Dishonor will not be turned back.
7 Is it being said, O house of Jacob:
‘Is the Spirit of Yahweh (GL)impatient?
Are these His deeds?’
Do not My words (GM)do good
To the one (GN)walking uprightly?
8 [bv]And recently My people have arisen as an (GO)enemy—
You (GP)strip the [bw]robe off the garment
From (GQ)unsuspecting passers-by,
From those returned from war.
9 The women of My people you (GR)drive out,
Each one from her pleasant house.
From her infants you take My (GS)splendor forever.
10 Arise and go,
For this is no place (GT)of rest
Because of the (GU)uncleanness that wreaks destruction,
A painful destruction.
11 If a man walking after wind and (GV)lying
Had acted falsely and said,
‘I will speak, dripping out words to you concerning (GW)wine and liquor,’
He would be one who drips out words as a spokesman to (GX)this people.
12 “I will surely (GY)assemble all of you, Jacob;
I will surely gather the (GZ)remnant of Israel.
I will put them together like sheep in the fold;
Like a flock in the midst of its pasture
They will be noisy with men.
13 The breaker goes up before them;
They break out, pass through the gate, and go out by it.
So their king goes on before them,
And Yahweh at their head.”
Yahweh Will Not Answer
3 And I said,
“(HA)Hear now, heads of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel.
Is it not for you to (HB)know justice?
2 You who hate good and love evil,
Who (HC)tear off their skin from them
And their flesh from their bones,
3 And who (HD)eat the flesh of my people,
Strip off their skin from them,
Break their bones,
And (HE)spread them out as for the pot
And as meat in a caldron.”
4 Then they will (HF)cry out to Yahweh,
But He will not answer them.
Instead, He will (HG)hide His face from them at that time
Because they have (HH)practiced evil deeds.
5 Thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who (HI)lead my people astray;
When they have something to bite with their teeth,
They (HJ)call out, “Peace,”
But against him who puts nothing in their mouths,
They set themselves apart for war.
6 Therefore it will be (HK)night for you—without vision,
And darkness for you—without divination.
The (HL)sun will go down on the prophets,
And the day will grow black over them.
7 The seers will be (HM)ashamed,
And the (HN)diviners will be humiliated.
Indeed, they will all (HO)cover their [bx]mouths
Because there is (HP)no answer from God.
8 On the other hand (HQ)I am filled with power—
With the Spirit of Yahweh—
And with justice and might
To (HR)declare to Jacob his transgression,
Even to Israel his sin.
9 Now hear this, (HS)heads of the house of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel,
Who (HT)abhor justice
And twist everything that is straight,
10 Who (HU)build Zion with bloodshed
And Jerusalem with violent injustice.
11 Her heads pronounce (HV)judgment for a bribe,
And her (HW)priests instruct for a price,
And her prophets divine for money.
Yet they lean on Yahweh saying,
“(HX)Is not Yahweh in our midst?
Evil will not come upon us.”
12 Therefore, on account of you
(HY)Zion will be plowed as a field;
(HZ)Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins,
And the (IA)mountain of the house of God will become high places of a forest.
The Law Will Go Forth from Zion
4 Now it will be that in the (IB)last days
The (IC)mountain of the house of Yahweh
Will be established [by]as the head of the mountains,
And will be lifted up above the hills,
And the (ID)peoples will stream to it.
2 (IE)And many nations will come and say,
“(IF)Come and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh
And to the house of the God of Jacob,
That (IG)He may instruct us from His ways
And that we may walk in His paths.”
For (IH)from Zion will go forth the law,
And the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.
3 And He will (II)judge between many peoples
And will render decisions for mighty, [bz]distant nations.
And they will hammer their swords (IJ)into plowshares
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation will not lift up sword against nation,
And never again will they learn war.
4 And each of them will (IK)sit under his vine
And under his fig tree,
With (IL)no one to make them tremble,
For the (IM)mouth of Yahweh of hosts has spoken.
5 Though all the peoples walk
Each in the (IN)name of his god,
As for us, (IO)we will walk
In the name of (IP)Yahweh our God forever and ever.
6 “In that day,” declares Yahweh,
“I will assemble the (IQ)lame
And (IR)gather the banished,
Even those upon whom I have brought calamity.
7 I will make the lame a (IS)remnant
And the outcasts a mighty nation,
And (IT)Yahweh will reign over them in Mount Zion
From now on and forever.
8 And as for you, [ca](IU)tower of the flock,
[cb]Hill of the daughter of Zion,
To you it will come—
Even the (IV)former dominion will come,
The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.
9 “Now, why do you (IW)make a loud shout?
Is there no king among you,
Or has your (IX)counselor perished,
That writhing has taken hold of you like a woman in childbirth?
10 (IY)Writhe and labor to give birth,
Daughter of Zion,
Like a woman in childbirth;
For now you will (IZ)go out of the city,
Dwell in the field,
And go to Babylon.
(JA)There you will be delivered;
(JB)There Yahweh will redeem you
From the hand of your enemies.
11 But now (JC)many nations have been assembled against you
Who say, ‘Let her be polluted,
And let our eyes behold Zion in triumph.’
12 But they do not (JD)know the thoughts of Yahweh,
And they do not understand His counsel;
For He has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 Arise and (JE)thresh, daughter of Zion,
For your horn I will make iron,
And your hoofs I will make bronze,
That you may (JF)pulverize many peoples,
That you may (JG)devote to Yahweh their greedy gain unto destruction
And their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.
The Ruler Will Come from Bethlehem
5 “[cc]Now muster yourselves in troops, daughter of troops;
[cd]They have laid siege against us;
With a rod they will (JH)strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.
2 [ce]But as for (JI)you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From (JJ)you One will go forth for Me to be (JK)ruler in Israel.
[cf]His goings forth are (JL)from everlasting,
From the ancient days.”
3 Therefore He will (JM)give them up until the time
When she (JN)who is in childbirth has borne a child.
Then the (JO)remainder of His brothers
Will return to the sons of Israel.
4 And He will stand and (JP)shepherd His flock
In the strength of Yahweh,
In the majesty of the name of Yahweh His God.
And they will [cg]remain
Because [ch]at that time He will be great
To the (JQ)ends of the earth.
5 And this One (JR)will be peace.
When the (JS)Assyrian enters our land,
When he treads on our [ci]citadels,
Then we will raise against him
Seven shepherds and eight princes of men.
6 And they will (JT)shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,
The land of (JU)Nimrod at its entrances;
And He will (JV)deliver us from the Assyrian
When he enters our land
And when he treads within our borders.
7 Then the (JW)remnant of Jacob
Will be among many peoples
Like (JX)dew from Yahweh,
Like (JY)showers on vegetation
Which do not hope for man
Or wait for the sons of men.
8 Then the remnant of Jacob
Will be among the nations,
Among many peoples
(JZ)Like a lion among the beasts of the forest,
Like a young lion among flocks of sheep,
Which, if it passes through,
(KA)Tramples down and (KB)tears,
And there is (KC)none to deliver.
9 Your hand will be (KD)raised up against your adversaries,
And all your enemies will be cut off.
10 “And it will be in that day,” declares Yahweh,
“(KE)That I will cut off your (KF)horses from among you
And destroy your chariots.
11 And I will cut off the (KG)cities of your land
And pull down all your (KH)fortifications.
12 And I will cut off (KI)sorceries from your hand,
And you will have soothsaying no more.
13 (KJ)And I will cut off your graven images
And your sacred pillars from among you
So that you will no longer worship
The work of your hands.
14 And I will uproot your [cj](KK)Asherim from among you
And [ck]eradicate your cities.
15 And I will (KL)execute vengeance in anger and wrath
On the nations which have not [cl](KM)listened.”
Yahweh’s Case Against His People
6 [cm](KN)Listen now to what Yahweh is saying,
“Arise, plead your case [cn]before the mountains,
And let the hills [co](KO)listen to your voice.
2 [cp](KP)Listen, you mountains, to the case of Yahweh,
And you enduring (KQ)foundations of the earth,
Because (KR)Yahweh has a case against His people;
Even with Israel He will reprove.
3 (KS)My people, (KT)what have I done to you,
And (KU)how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
4 Indeed, I (KV)brought you up from the land of Egypt
And (KW)ransomed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you (KX)Moses, Aaron, and (KY)Miriam.
5 My people, remember now
What (KZ)Balak king of Moab counseled
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And from (LA)Shittim to (LB)Gilgal,
So [cq]that you might know the (LC)righteous acts of Yahweh.”
What Yahweh Requires
6 (LD)With what shall I come before Yahweh
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come before Him with (LE)burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
7 Is Yahweh pleased with (LF)thousands of rams,
With ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give my (LG)firstborn for my transgression,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has (LH)told you, O man, what is good;
And (LI)what does Yahweh require of you
But to (LJ)do justice, to (LK)love lovingkindness,
And to walk [cr](LL)humbly with your God?
9 The voice of Yahweh will call to the city—
And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:
“Hear, O tribe. Who even has appointed [cs]its time?
10 Is there yet a man in the wicked house,
Along with treasures of (LM)wickedness,
And a [ct](LN)short measure which is cursed?
11 Can I purify wicked (LO)scales
And a bag of deceptive weights?
12 For the rich men of [cu]the city are full of (LP)violence,
And her inhabitants speak (LQ)lies,
And their (LR)tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
13 So also I will make you (LS)sick, striking you down,
(LT)Desolating you because of your sins.
14 You will eat, but you will (LU)not be satisfied,
And your [cv]vileness will be in your midst.
And you will try to remove something for safekeeping,
But you will (LV)not cause anything to escape,
And that which you do have escape, I will give to the sword.
15 You will sow but you will (LW)not reap.
You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil;
And the grapes, but you will (LX)not drink wine.
16 The statutes of (LY)Omri
And all the works of the house of (LZ)Ahab are kept;
And in their counsels you (MA)walk.
Therefore I will give you up as (MB)an object of horror
And [cw]your inhabitants as an (MC)object of hissing,
And you will bear the (MD)reproach of My people.”
There Is No Upright Person
7 Woe is me! For I am
Like the fruit pickers, like the (ME)grape gatherers.
There is not a cluster of grapes to eat,
Or a (MF)first-ripe fig which my soul desires.
2 The [cx]holy one has (MG)perished from the land,
And there is no upright person among men.
All of them lie in wait for (MH)bloodshed;
Each of them hunts the other with a (MI)net.
3 Concerning evil, both hands do it (MJ)well.
The prince asks, also the judge, for a (MK)payment,
And a great man speaks the craving of his soul;
So they weave it together.
4 The best of them is like a (ML)briar,
The most upright like a (MM)thorn hedge.
The day when you post your watchmen,
Your (MN)punishment will come.
[cy]At that time their (MO)panic will happen.
5 Do not (MP)believe in a neighbor;
Do not have confidence in a close companion.
From her who lies in your bosom
Guard the openings of your mouth.
6 For (MQ)son treats father as a wicked fool;
Daughter rises up against her mother,
Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
(MR)A man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
Yahweh Is a Light for Me
7 But as for me, I will (MS)watch expectantly for Yahweh;
I will (MT)wait for the God of my salvation.
My (MU)God will hear me.
8 (MV)Do not be glad over me, O (MW)my enemy.
Though I fall I will (MX)rise;
Though I inhabit the darkness, Yahweh is a (MY)light for me.
9 I will bear the rage of Yahweh
Because I have sinned against Him,
Until He (MZ)pleads my case and does justice for me.
He will bring me out to the (NA)light,
And I will see His [cz](NB)righteousness.
10 Then my enemy will see,
And shame will cover her who (NC)said to me,
“Where is Yahweh your God?”
My eyes will look on her;
[da]At that time she will [db]be (ND)trampled down
Like mire of the streets.
11 It will be a day for (NE)building your walls.
On that day your boundary will be extended.
12 It will be a day when [dc]they will (NF)come to you
From Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
From Egypt even to the [dd]River,
Even from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
13 And the earth will become (NG)desolate because of her inhabitants,
On account of the (NH)fruit of their deeds.
14 (NI)Shepherd Your people with Your (NJ)scepter,
The flock of Your inheritance
Which dwells by itself in the forest,
In the midst of [de]a fruitful orchard.
Let them feed in (NK)Bashan and Gilead
(NL)As in the ancient days.
15 “As in the days when you came out from the land of Egypt,
I will show [df](NM)you wondrous deeds.”
16 Nations (NN)will see and be ashamed
Of all their might.
They will (NO)put their hand on their mouth;
Their ears will be deaf.
17 They will (NP)lick the dust like a serpent,
Like (NQ)crawling things of the earth.
They will come (NR)trembling out of their [dg]fortresses;
To Yahweh our God they will come in (NS)dread,
And they will be afraid before You.
18 Who is a God like You, who (NT)forgives iniquity
And passes over the transgression of the (NU)remnant of His inheritance?
He does not (NV)hold fast to His anger forever
Because He (NW)delights in lovingkindness.
19 He will again have compassion on us;
(NX)He will subdue our iniquities.
And You will (NY)cast all [dh]their sins
Into the depths of the sea.
20 You will give [di](NZ)truth to Jacob
And lovingkindness to Abraham,
Which You (OA)swore to our fathers
From the days of old.
Yahweh’s Wrath Against Nineveh
1 The [dj](OB)oracle of (OC)Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
Aleph
2 A (OD)jealous and avenging God is [dk]Yahweh;
Yahweh is (OE)avenging and [dl]wrathful.
Yahweh is (OF)avenging against His adversaries,
And He keeps His anger for His enemies.
3 Yahweh is (OG)slow to anger and great in power,
And Yahweh will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
Beth
Gimel
4 He (OJ)rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
He dries up all the rivers.
(OK)Bashan and Carmel languish;
The blossoms of Lebanon languish.
He
5 Mountains (OL)quake because of Him,
Vav
And the hills (OM)melt;
Indeed the earth is (ON)upheaved by His presence,
The (OO)world and all the inhabitants in it.

7 Yahweh is (OT)good,
A strong defense in the day of distress,
Yodh
Kaph
9 Whatever you (OX)devise against Yahweh,
He will make a (OY)complete destruction of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
10 Like tangled (OZ)thorns,
And like those who are (PA)drunken with their drink,
They are (PB)consumed
As stubble fully dried up.
11 From you has gone forth
One who (PC)devised evil against Yahweh,
A [dn](PD)vile counselor.
12 Thus says Yahweh,
“Though they are at full strength and likewise many,
Even so, they will be (PE)cut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you (PF)no longer.
13 So now, I will (PG)break his yoke bar from upon you,
And I will break your bands apart.”
14 And Yahweh has commanded concerning [do]you:
“[dp]There will (PH)no longer be seed from your name.
From the house of your gods,
I will cut off (PI)graven image and molten image.
I will prepare your (PJ)grave,
For you are contemptible.”
15 [dq]Behold, (PK)on the mountains the feet of him who proclaims good news,
Who [dr]announces peace!
(PL)Celebrate your feasts, O Judah;
Pay your vows.
For (PM)never again will the [ds]vile one pass through you;
He is (PN)cut off completely.
Yahweh’s Destruction of Nineveh
2 [dt]The one who (PO)scatters has come up against [du]you.
Guard the fortification, watch the road;
Strengthen your loins, [dv]instill your power with exceeding courage.
2 For Yahweh will restore the (PP)majesty of Jacob
(PQ)Like the majesty of Israel,
Even though those who empty them have emptied them to destruction
And (PR)ruined their vine branches.
3 The shields of [dw]his mighty men are colored red,
The valiant men are dressed in (PS)[dx]scarlet,
The chariots are enveloped in [dy]flashing steel
[dz]When he is set up to march,
And the cypress (PT)spears are brandished.
4 The (PU)chariots race madly in the streets;
They rush wildly in the [ea]squares;
Their appearance is like torches;
They dash to and fro like lightning flashes.
5 He remembers his (PV)mighty ones;
They (PW)stumble in their march;
They hurry to her wall,
And the [eb]mantelet is set up.
6 The gates of the rivers are opened,
And the palace is melted away.
7 So it stands fixed:
She is exiled, she is carried away,
And her maidservants are (PX)moaning like the sound of doves,
(PY)Beating on their hearts.
8 Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days,
Now they are fleeing;
“Stand! Stand!”
But (PZ)no one [ec]turns back.
9 Plunder the silver!
Plunder the (QA)gold!
And there is no limit to the treasure—
[ed]Wealth from every kind of desirable object.
10 She is (QB)emptied! Yes, she is emptied out and eviscerated!
(QC)Hearts are melting and knees knocking!
Also anguish is in all their loins,
And all their (QD)faces [ee]turn pale!
11 Where is the den of the lions
And the feeding place of the (QE)young lions,
Where the lion, lioness, and lion’s cub prowled,
With nothing to make them tremble?
12 The lion tore enough for its cubs
And strangled enough for its lionesses
And filled its lairs with torn up prey
And its dens with torn up flesh.
13 “Behold, (QF)I am against you,” declares Yahweh of hosts. “And I will (QG)burn up her chariots in smoke, and a sword will devour your young lions; and I will (QH)cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard.”
Woe to Nineveh
3 (QI)Woe to the city of [ef]bloodshed, completely full of deception and pillage;
Her prey never departs.
2 The (QJ)sound of the whip,
And the sound of the rumbling of the wheel,
Galloping horses,
And [eg]bounding chariots!
3 Horsemen charging,
And swords flaming, and (QK)spears flashing,
(QL)Many slain, a mass of corpses,
And (QM)there is no end to dead bodies—
They stumble over [eh]the dead bodies!
4 All because of the (QN)many harlotries of the harlot,
The charming one, the (QO)mistress of sorceries,
Who (QP)sells nations by her harlotries
And families by her sorceries.
5 “Behold, (QQ)I am against you,” declares Yahweh of hosts;
“And I will (QR)uncover your skirts over your face
And (QS)show to the nations your nakedness
And to the kingdoms your disgrace.
6 I will (QT)throw detestable filth on you
And (QU)display you as a wicked fool
And set you up as a (QV)spectacle.
7 And it will be that all who see you
Will flee from you and say,
‘Nineveh is devastated!
(QW)Who will console her?’
Where will I seek comforters for you?”
8 Are you better than [ei](QX)No-amon,
Which sits along the (QY)waters of the Nile,
With water surrounding her,
Whose rampart was [ej]the sea,
Whose wall consisted of [ek]the sea?
9 [el](QZ)Ethiopia was her might,
And Egypt too, without end.
(RA)Put and (RB)Lubim were among [em]her helpers.
10 Yet she (RC)became an exile;
She went into captivity;
Also her (RD)infants were dashed to pieces
(RE)At the head of every street;
They (RF)cast lots for her honorable men,
And all her great men were bound with fetters.
11 You too will become (RG)drunk;
You will be (RH)hidden.
You too will search for a strong defense from the enemy.
12 All your fortifications are (RI)fig trees with [en](RJ)ripe fruit—
When shaken, they fall into the eater’s mouth.
13 Behold, your people are (RK)women in your midst!
The gates of your land are (RL)opened wide to your enemies;
Fire consumes your gate bars.
14 (RM)Draw for yourself water for the siege!
(RN)Strengthen your fortifications!
Go into the clay and tread the mortar!
[eo]Take hold of the brick mold!
15 There, (RO)fire will consume you;
The sword will cut you down;
It will (RP)consume you as the locust does.
Multiply yourself like the creeping locust,
Multiply yourself like the swarming locust.
16 You have increased your (RQ)traders more than the stars of heaven—
The creeping locust [ep]strips and flies away.
17 Your [eq](RR)guardsmen are like the swarming locust.
Your (RS)marshals are like a locust-swarm
Encamping in the stone walls on a cold day.
The sun rises, and they flee,
And the place where they are is not known.
18 Your shepherds are (RT)sleeping, O (RU)king of Assyria;
Your (RV)mighty ones are [er]lying down.
Your people are (RW)scattered on the mountains,
And there is no one to regather them.
19 There is (RX)no relief for your breakdown,
Your (RY)wound is incurable.
All who hear the report about you
Will (RZ)clap their hands over you,
For on whom has not your evil passed continually?
