Psalm 115[a]
Hymn to the Lord, the One God
1 [b]Not to us,[c] O Lord, not to us,
but to your name give glory
because of your kindness and faithfulness.
2 Why should the nations ask,
“Where is their God?”[d]
3 Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever he pleases.[e]
4 Their idols are merely silver and gold,
the work of human hands.[f]
5 They have mouths but they cannot speak;
they have eyes but they cannot see.
6 They have ears but they cannot hear;
they have noses but they cannot smell.
7 They have hands but they cannot feel;
they have feet but they cannot walk;
their throats can emit no sound.
8 Those who make them end up like them,
as do all who place their trust in them.
9 [g]The house of Israel trusts in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.
10 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.
11 Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord;
he is their help and their shield.
12 [h]The Lord will be mindful of us and bless us;
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord,
the small no less than the great.[i]
14 [j]May the Lord cause you to increase,
both you and your children.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
16 [k]The heavens belong to the Lord,
but he has given the earth to humanity.
17 It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
those who sink into silence.[l]
18 It is we who bless the Lord
from this time forward and forevermore.[m]
Alleluia.
Psalm 116[n]
Thanksgiving to God for Help Received
1 I love the Lord because he has heard my voice
and listened to my cry for mercy,[o]
2 because he has inclined his ear to me
on the day when I called out to him.[p]
3 The bonds of death[q] encompassed me;
the snares of the netherworld held me tightly.
I was seized by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I cried out in the name[r] of the Lord:
“O Lord, I entreat you to preserve my life.”
5 Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
our God is merciful.
6 The Lord watches over his little ones;[s]
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Be at peace once again, O my soul,
for the Lord has shown mercy to you.
8 He has delivered my soul[t] from death,
my eyes from tears,
and my feet from stumbling.
9 I will walk in the presence of the Lord
in the land of the living.[u]
10 I believed; therefore, I said,[v]
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 In my dismay I cried out,
“All men are liars.”[w]
12 How can I repay the Lord
for all the good he has done for me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation[x]
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows[y] to the Lord
in the presence of his people.
15 Precious in the eyes of the Lord
is the death[z] of his faithful ones.
16 O Lord, I am your servant.
I am your servant, the child of your handmaid;[aa]
you have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Alleluia.[ab]
Psalm 117[ac]
Universal Praise of God
1 Glorify the Lord, all you nations;[ad]
praise him, all you peoples.
2 For his kindness toward us is constant,
and the faithfulness of the Lord will endure forever.
Alleluia.[ae]
Psalm 118[af]
Thanksgiving for Salvation
1 [ag]Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his kindness[ah] endures forever.
2 Let Israel say,
“His kindness endures forever.”
3 Let the house of Aaron say,
“His kindness endures forever.”
4 Let those who fear the Lord[ai] say,
“His kindness endures forever.”
5 [aj]In my distress I called out to the Lord;
he answered by setting me free.
6 With the Lord to protect me I am not afraid.
What can mortals do to me?
7 The Lord is at my side to offer me help;
I will look down upon my enemies.
8 [ak]It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to place your trust in mortals.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to place your trust in princes.
10 [al]All the nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I overcame them.
11 They surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I overcame them.
12 They swarmed around me like bees;
they blazed like a fire in the midst of thorns;
in the name of the Lord I overcame them.
13 I was hard pressed and close to falling,
but the Lord came to my aid.
14 The Lord is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.[am]
15 Joyful shouts of triumph
ring out in the tents of the righteous:
“The right hand of the Lord has done wondrous deeds;
16 the right hand of the Lord is exalted;
the right hand of the Lord has done wondrous deeds.”
17 I shall not die; rather I shall live
and recount[an] the works of the Lord.
18 Even though the Lord punished me harshly,
he did not hand me over to death.
19 [ao]Open to me the gates of righteousness
so that I may enter them and praise the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord
through which the righteous enter.
21 I thank you for having answered me;
you have become my salvation.
22 [ap]The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;[aq]
let us exult and rejoice in it.
25 O Lord, grant us salvation.[ar]
O Lord, grant us success.
26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.[as]
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Holding leafy branches, join in the festal procession
up to the horns of the altar.[at]
28 [au]You are my God, and I will offer thanks to you;
you are my God, and I will extol you.
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his kindness endures forever.
