Book of Common Prayer
O God, Restore Us
For the choir director. [a]El Shoshannim. [b]Eduth. Of Asaph. A Psalm.
80 O (A)Shepherd of Israel, give ear,
You who guide (B)Joseph like a flock;
You who (C)are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before (D)Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, (E)stir up Your might
And come to save us!
3 O God, (F)restore us
And (G)cause Your face to shine upon us, that we would be saved.
4 O (H)Yahweh God of hosts,
(I)How long will You [c]smolder against the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the (J)bread of tears,
And You have made them to drink tears in [d]large measure.
6 You set us as [e]an object of strife (K)to our neighbors,
And our enemies mock us among themselves.
7 O God of hosts, restore us
And cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
8 You removed a (L)vine from Egypt;
You (M)drove out the [f]nations and then You (N)planted it.
9 You (O)cleared the ground before it,
And it (P)took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [g]the cedars of God with its (Q)boughs.
11 It sent out its branches (R)to the sea
And its shoots to the River.
12 Why have You (S)broken down its [h]hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13 A boar from the forest (T)devours it
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14 O God of hosts, (U)return now, we beseech You;
(V)Look down from heaven and see, and visit this vine,
15 Even the [i](W)sapling which Your right hand has planted,
And on the [j]son whom You have [k]strengthened for Yourself.
16 It is (X)burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish at the (Y)rebuke of Your face.
17 Let (Z)Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You (AA)made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we shall not (AB)turn back from You;
(AC)Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 O Yahweh God of hosts, (AD)restore us;
Cause Your face to shine upon us, that we might be saved.
I Will Praise Yahweh Throughout My Life
146 [a]Praise Yah!
(A)Praise Yahweh, O my soul!
2 I will praise Yahweh (B)throughout my life;
I will (C)sing praises to my God while I have my being.
3 (D)Do not trust in nobles,
In merely a son of (E)man, in whom there is (F)no salvation.
4 His (G)spirit departs, he (H)returns to [b]the earth;
In that very day his (I)plans perish.
5 How (J)blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose (K)hope is in Yahweh his God,
6 Who (L)made heaven and earth,
The (M)sea and all that is in them;
Who (N)keeps truth forever;
7 Who (O)does justice for the oppressed;
Who (P)gives food to the hungry.
Yahweh (Q)sets the prisoners free.
8 Yahweh (R)opens the eyes of the blind;
Yahweh (S)raises up those who are bowed down;
Yahweh (T)loves the righteous;
9 Yahweh (U)keeps the sojourners;
He [c](V)helps up the orphan and the widow,
But He bends (W)the way of the wicked.
10 Yahweh will (X)reign forever,
Your God, O Zion, [d]from generation to generation.
[e]Praise Yah!
He Heals the Brokenhearted
147 [f]Praise Yah!
For (Y)it is good to sing praises to our God;
For [g]it is pleasant and praise is (Z)becoming.
2 Yahweh (AA)builds up Jerusalem;
He (AB)gathers the [h]outcasts of Israel.
3 He is the One who heals the (AC)brokenhearted
And who (AD)binds up their [i]wounds,
4 Who (AE)counts the number of the stars;
He [j](AF)gives names to all of them.
5 (AG)Great is our Lord and abundant in power;
His (AH)discernment is [k]infinite.
6 Yahweh [l](AI)helps up the afflicted;
He brings down the wicked to the ground.
7 (AJ)Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving;
Sing praises to our God on the lyre.
8 He is the One who (AK)covers the heavens with clouds,
The One who (AL)provides rain for the earth,
The One who (AM)makes grass to sprout on the mountains,
9 Who (AN)gives to the animal its food,
And to the (AO)young ravens which call out.
10 He does not delight in the might of the (AP)horse;
He (AQ)does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 Yahweh (AR)is pleased with those who fear Him,
(AS)Those who wait for His lovingkindness.
12 Laud Yahweh, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He strengthened the (AT)bars of your gates;
He (AU)blessed your sons within you.
14 He is the One who (AV)sets [m]peace in your borders,
He (AW)satisfies you with (AX)the [n]finest of the wheat,
15 The One who sends forth His (AY)command to the earth;
His (AZ)word runs very swiftly,
16 The One who gives (BA)snow like wool;
He scatters the (BB)frost like ashes,
17 Who casts forth His (BC)ice as fragments;
Who can stand before His (BD)cold?
18 He (BE)sends forth His word and melts them;
He (BF)causes His wind to blow and so the waters flow,
19 Who (BG)declares His words to Jacob,
His (BH)statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 He (BI)has not done so with any nation;
So as for His judgments, they have (BJ)not known them.
[o]Praise Yah!
13 Then the Lord said,
“Because (A)this people draw near with their mouth
And honor Me with their lips,
But they remove their hearts far from Me,
And their fear of Me is in the command of men learned by rote,
14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal (B)marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And (C)the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the discernment of their discerning men will be hidden.”
15 Woe to those who deeply (D)hide their counsel from Yahweh,
And whose (E)deeds are done in a dark place,
And they say, “(F)Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
16 You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered [a]as equal with the clay,
That (G)what is made would say to its maker, “He did not make me”;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?
The Afflicted Will Rejoice
17 Is it not yet just a little while
[b]Before Lebanon will be turned into a (H)fruitful orchard,
And the fruitful orchard will be counted as a forest?
18 On that day the (I)deaf will hear (J)words of a book,
And out of [c]darkness and thick darkness the (K)eyes of the blind will see.
19 The (L)afflicted also will increase their gladness in Yahweh,
And the (M)needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the (N)ruthless will come to an end and the (O)scoffer will be finished,
Indeed (P)all who are watching out to do evil will be cut off;
21 Who [d]cause a person to sin by a word,
And (Q)ensnare him who reproves at the gate,
And [e](R)defraud the one in the right with [f]meaningless arguments.
22 Therefore thus says Yahweh, who redeemed (S)Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob (T)shall not now be ashamed, and now his face shall not turn pale;
23 But when [g]he sees his (U)children, the (V)work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will (W)sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
And will stand trembling before the God of Israel.
24 Those who (X)err in spirit will (Y)know discernment,
And those who [h]criticize will [i](Z)gain learning.
22 And I saw (A)no sanctuary in it, for the (B)Lord God the Almighty and the (C)Lamb are its sanctuary. 23 And the city (D)has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for (E)the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the (F)Lamb. 24 (G)And the nations will walk by its light, and the (H)kings of the earth [a]will bring their glory into it. 25 (I)And its gates (J)will never be closed by day, for (K)there will be no night there; 26 and (L)they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 And (M)nothing defiled, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [b]whose names are (N)written in the Lamb’s book of life.
The River and the Tree of Life
22 Then (O)he showed me a (P)river of the (Q)water of life, bright (R)as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [c]the Lamb, 2 in the middle of (S)its street. (T)On either side of the river was (U)the tree of life, bearing twelve [d]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 (V)And there will no longer be any curse; and (W)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His slaves will (X)serve Him; 4 and they will (Y)see His face, and His (Z)name will be on their (AA)foreheads. 5 And (AB)there will no longer be any night, and they [e]will not have need (AC)of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them, and they will (AD)reign forever and ever.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 Now [a]at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to (A)the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened that when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was (B)filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And [b]how has it happened to me, that the mother of (C)my Lord would come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And (D)blessed is she who believed [c]that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her [d]by the [e]Lord.”
Mary Magnifies the Lord
46 And Mary said:
48 For (A)He has looked upon the humble state of His slave,
For behold, from this time on, all generations will count me (B)blessed.
49 For the Mighty One has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.
50 (C)And His mercy is [a]upon generation after generation
Toward those who fear Him.
51 (D)He has done a mighty deed with His arm;
He has scattered those who were proud in the [b]thoughts of their heart.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
And has (E)exalted those who were humble.
53 (F)He has filled the hungry with good things,
And sent away the rich empty-handed.
54 He has given help to Israel His servant,
[c]In remembrance of His mercy,
55 (G)As He spoke to our fathers,
(H)To Abraham and his seed forever.”
56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.
