Psalm 63

Psalm 63[a]

Ardent Longing for God

A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.(A)

I

O God, you are my God—
    it is you I seek!
For you my body yearns;
    for you my soul thirsts,
In a land parched, lifeless,
    and without water.(B)
I look to you in the sanctuary
    to see your power and glory.
For your love is better than life;[b]
    my lips shall ever praise you!

II

I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands, calling on your name.
My soul shall be sated as with choice food,
    with joyous lips my mouth shall praise you!
I think of you upon my bed,
    I remember you through the watches of the night
You indeed are my savior,
    and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.(C)
My soul clings fast to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

III

10 But those who seek my life will come to ruin;
    they shall go down to the depths of the netherworld!
11     Those who would hand over my life to the sword shall
    become the prey of jackals!
12 But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by the Lord[c] shall exult,
    but the mouths of liars will be shut!(D)

Psalm 98[a]

The Coming of God

A psalm.

I

Sing a new song to the Lord,
    for he has done marvelous deeds.(A)
His right hand and holy arm
    have won the victory.[b](B)
The Lord has made his victory known;
    has revealed his triumph in the sight of the nations,
He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness
    toward the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the victory of our God.

II

Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth;
    break into song; sing praise.
Sing praise to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and melodious song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    shout with joy to the King, the Lord.(C)

III

Let the sea and what fills it resound,(D)
    the world and those who dwell there.
Let the rivers clap their hands,
    the mountains shout with them for joy,(E)
(F)Before the Lord who comes,
    who comes to govern the earth,(G)
To govern the world with justice
    and the peoples with fairness.

Psalm 103

Psalm 103[a]

Praise of Divine Goodness

Of David.

I

Bless the Lord, my soul;
    all my being, bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, my soul;
    and do not forget all his gifts,
Who pardons all your sins,
    and heals all your ills,
Who redeems your life from the pit,(A)
    and crowns you with mercy and compassion,
Who fills your days with good things,
    so your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.[b]

II

The Lord does righteous deeds,
    brings justice to all the oppressed.(B)
He made known his ways to Moses,
    to the Israelites his deeds.
Merciful and gracious is the Lord,
    slow to anger, abounding in mercy.(C)
He will not always accuse,
    and nurses no lasting anger;
10 He has not dealt with us as our sins merit,
    nor requited us as our wrongs deserve.

III

11 For as the heavens tower over the earth,
    so his mercy towers over those who fear him.(D)
12 As far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our sins from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we are formed,
    remembers that we are dust.(E)
15 As for man, his days are like the grass;
    he blossoms like a flower in the field.(F)
16 A wind sweeps over it and it is gone;
    its place knows it no more.
17 But the Lord’s mercy is from age to age,
    toward those who fear him.
His salvation is for the children’s children
18     of those who keep his covenant,
    and remember to carry out his precepts.

IV

19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven;
    his dominion extends over all.
20 Bless the Lord, all you his angels,(G)
    mighty in strength, acting at his behest,
    obedient to his command.
21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts,
    his ministers who carry out his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his creatures,
    everywhere in his domain.
    Bless the Lord, my soul!

Isaiah 47

Chapter 47

The Fall of Babylon[a]

Come down, sit in the dust,
    virgin daughter Babylon;
Sit on the ground, dethroned,
    daughter of the Chaldeans.
No longer shall you be called
    dainty and delicate.(A)
Take the millstone and grind flour,
    remove your veil;
Strip off your skirt, bare your legs,
    cross through the streams.
Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
    and your shame be seen;
I will take vengeance,
    I will yield to no entreaty,
    says our redeemer,
Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
    the Holy One of Israel.

Go into darkness and sit in silence,
    daughter of the Chaldeans,
No longer shall you be called
    sovereign mistress of kingdoms.
Angry at my people,
    I profaned my heritage
And gave them into your power;
    but you showed them no mercy;
Upon the aged
    you laid a very heavy yoke.
You said, “I shall remain always,
    a sovereign mistress forever!”
You did not take these things to heart,
    but disregarded their outcome.(B)
Now hear this, voluptuous one,
    enthroned securely,
Saying in your heart,
    “I, and no one else![b]
I shall never be a widow,
    bereft of my children”—(C)
Both these things shall come to you
    suddenly, in a single day:
Complete bereavement and widowhood
    shall come upon you
Despite your many sorceries
    and the full power of your spells;[c]
10 Secure in your wickedness,
    you said, “No one sees me.”
Your wisdom and your knowledge
    led you astray,
And you said in your heart,
    “I, and no one else!”
11 But upon you shall come an evil
    you will not be able to charm away;
Upon you shall fall a disaster
    you cannot ward off.
Upon you shall suddenly come
    a ruin you cannot imagine.

12 Keep on with your spells
    and your many sorceries,
    at which you toiled from your youth.
Perhaps you can prevail,
    perhaps you can strike terror!
13 You wore yourself out with so many consultations!
    Let the astrologers stand forth to save you,
The stargazers who forecast at each new moon
    what would happen to you.
14 See, they are like stubble,
    fire consumes them;
They cannot deliver themselves
    from the spreading flames.
This is no warming ember,
    no fire to sit before!
15 Thus do your wizards serve you
    with whom you have toiled from your youth;
They wander their separate ways,
    with none to save you.

Hebrews 10:19-31

19 Therefore, brothers, since through the blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary(A) 20 [a]by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil,(B) that is, his flesh, 21 [b](C)and since we have “a great priest over the house of God,” 22 let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience[c] and our bodies washed in pure water.(D) 23 Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy.(E) 24 We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works. 25 We should not stay away from our assembly,[d] as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day drawing near.(F)

26 [e](G)If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries.(H) 28 Anyone who rejects the law of Moses[f] is put to death without pity on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(I) 29 Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant-blood by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace?(J) 30 We know the one who said:

“Vengeance is mine; I will repay,”

and again:

“The Lord will judge his people.”(K)

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.(L)

John 5:2-18

Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep [Gate][a] a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes.(A) In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled.[b] [][c] One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your mat, and walk.”(B) Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked.(C)

Now that day was a sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who was cured, “It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.”(D) 11 He answered them, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who told you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” 13 The man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there.(E) 14 [d]After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him,(F) “Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well. 16 Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath.(G) 17 [e]But Jesus answered them,(H) “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.(I)
