Psalm 148-150

Psalm 148[a]

All Creation Summoned to Praise

Hallelujah!

I

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all you his angels;
    give praise, all you his hosts.(A)
Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens,[b]
    you waters above the heavens.
Let them all praise the Lord’s name;
    for he commanded and they were created,(B)
Assigned them their station forever,
    set an order that will never change.

II

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you sea monsters and all the deeps of the sea;(C)
Lightning and hail, snow and thick clouds,
    storm wind that fulfills his command;
Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars;(D)
10 Animals wild and tame,
    creatures that crawl and birds that fly;(E)
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all who govern on earth;
12 Young men and women too,
    old and young alike.
13 Let them all praise the Lord’s name,
    for his name alone is exalted,
    His majesty above earth and heaven.(F)
14 [c]He has lifted high the horn of his people;
    to the praise of all his faithful,
    the Israelites, the people near to him.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 149[d]

Praise God with Song and Sword

Hallelujah!

Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of the faithful.(G)
Let Israel be glad in its maker,
    the people of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in dance,
    make music with tambourine and lyre.[e](H)
For the Lord takes delight in his people,
    honors the poor with victory.
Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,
    cry out for joy on their couches,[f]
With the praise of God in their mouths,
    and a two-edged sword in their hands,(I)
To bring retribution on the nations,
    punishment on the peoples,(J)
To bind their kings in shackles,
    their nobles in chains of iron,
To execute the judgments decreed for them—
    such is the glory[g] of all God’s faithful.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 150[h]

Final Doxology

Hallelujah!

Praise God in his holy sanctuary;[i](K)
    give praise in the mighty dome of heaven.
Give praise for his mighty deeds,(L)
    praise him for his great majesty.
Give praise with blasts upon the horn,(M)
    praise him with harp and lyre.
Give praise with tambourines and dance,
    praise him with strings and pipes.(N)
Give praise with crashing cymbals,
    praise him with sounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
    give praise to the Lord!(O)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 114-115

Psalm 114[a]

The Lord’s Wonders at the Exodus

When Israel came forth from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from an alien people,
Judah became God’s sanctuary,
    Israel, God’s domain.(A)
[b]The sea saw and fled;
    the Jordan turned back.(B)
The mountains skipped like rams;
    the hills, like lambs.(C)
Why was it, sea, that you fled?
    Jordan, that you turned back?
Mountains, that you skipped like rams?
    You hills, like lambs?
Tremble, earth, before the Lord,(D)
    before the God of Jacob,
[c]Who turned the rock into pools of water,
    flint into a flowing spring.(E)

Psalm 115[d]

The Greatness of the True God

I

Not to us, Lord, not to us
    but to your name give glory
    because of your mercy and faithfulness.(F)
Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”[e](G)
Our God is in heaven
    and does whatever he wills.(H)

II

Their idols are silver and gold,(I)
    the work of human hands.(J)
They have mouths but do not speak,
    eyes but do not see.
They have ears but do not hear,
    noses but do not smell.
They have hands but do not feel,
    feet but do not walk;
    they produce no sound from their throats.
Their makers will be like them,
    and anyone who trusts in them.

III

[f]The house of Israel trusts in the Lord,(K)
    who is their help and shield.(L)
10 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord,
    who is their help and shield.
11 Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord,
    who is their help and shield.
12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us,
    will bless the house of Israel,
    will bless the house of Aaron,
13 Will bless those who fear the Lord,
    small and great alike.
14 May the Lord increase your number,
    yours and your descendants.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    maker of heaven and earth.
16 [g]The heavens belong to the Lord,
    but he has given the earth to the children of Adam.(M)
17 [h]The dead do not praise the Lord,
    not all those go down into silence.(N)
18 It is we who bless the Lord,
    both now and forever.
Hallelujah!

Isaiah 43:14-44:5

14 Thus says the Lord, your redeemer,[a]
    the Holy One of Israel:
For your sake I send to Babylon;
    I will bring down all her defenses,
    and the Chaldeans shall cry out in lamentation.
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One,
    the creator of Israel, your King.
16 Thus says the Lord,
    who opens a way in the sea,
    a path in the mighty waters,(A)
17 Who leads out chariots and horsemen,
    a powerful army,
Till they lie prostrate together, never to rise,
    snuffed out, quenched like a wick.(B)
18 Remember not[b] the events of the past,
    the things of long ago consider not;
19 See, I am doing something new!
    Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
In the wilderness I make a way,
    in the wasteland, rivers.
20 Wild beasts honor me,
    jackals and ostriches,
For I put water in the wilderness
    and rivers in the wasteland
    for my chosen people to drink,
21 The people whom I formed for myself,
    that they might recount my praise.

22 Yet you did not call upon me, Jacob,[c]
    for you grew weary of me, Israel.
23 You did not bring me sheep for your burnt offerings,
    nor honor me with your sacrifices.
I did not exact from you the service of offerings,
    nor weary you for frankincense.(C)
24 You did not buy me sweet cane,[d]
    nor did you fill me with the fat of your sacrifices;
Instead, you burdened me with your sins,
    wearied me with your crimes.
25 It is I, I, who wipe out,
    for my own sake, your offenses;
    your sins I remember no more.
26 Would you have me remember, have us come to trial?
    Speak up, prove your innocence!
27 Your first father[e] sinned;
    your spokesmen rebelled against me
28 Till I repudiated the holy princes,
    put Jacob under the ban,
    exposed Israel to scorn.

Chapter 44

Hear then, Jacob, my servant,
    Israel, whom I have chosen.
Thus says the Lord who made you,
    your help, who formed you from the womb:
Do not fear, Jacob, my servant,
    Jeshurun,[f] whom I have chosen.
I will pour out water upon the thirsty ground,
    streams upon the dry land;
I will pour out my spirit upon your offspring,
    my blessing upon your descendants.
They shall spring forth amid grass
    like poplars beside flowing waters.(D)
One shall say, “I am the Lord’s,”
    another shall be named after Jacob,
And this one shall write on his hand,[g] “The Lord’s,”
    and receive the name Israel.(E)

Hebrews 6:17-7:10

17 So when God wanted to give the heirs of his promise an even clearer demonstration of the immutability of his purpose, he intervened with an oath,(A) 18 so that by two immutable things,[a] in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to hold fast to the hope that lies before us.(B) 19 This we have as an anchor of the soul,(C) sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil,[b] 20 where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.(D)

Chapter 7

Melchizedek, a Type of Christ. [c]This “Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High,”[d] “met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of the kings” and “blessed him.”(E) [e]And Abraham apportioned to him “a tenth of everything.” His name first means righteous king, and he was also “king of Salem,” that is, king of peace. Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life,[f] thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.(F)

[g]See how great he is to whom the patriarch “Abraham [indeed] gave a tenth” of his spoils.(G) The descendants of Levi who receive the office of priesthood have a commandment according to the law to exact tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, although they also have come from the loins of Abraham.(H) But he who was not of their ancestry received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had received the promises. Unquestionably, a lesser person is blessed by a greater.[h] In the one case, mortal men receive tithes; in the other, a man of whom it is testified that he lives on. One might even say that Levi[i] himself, who receives tithes, was tithed through Abraham, 10 for he was still in his father’s loins when Melchizedek met him.

John 4:27-42

27 At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman,[a] but still no one said, “What are you looking for?” or “Why are you talking with her?” 28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, 29 “Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 They went out of the town and came to him. 31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.(A) 35 Do you not say, ‘In four months[b] the harvest will be here’? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.(B) 36 The reaper is already[c] receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.(C) 37 For here the saying is verified that ‘One sows and another reaps.’(D) 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work.”

39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman[d] who testified, “He told me everything I have done.” 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more began to believe in him because of his word, 42 and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”(E)
