Psalm 140

To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David.

¶ Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man; preserve me from the man of violence.

Who devise evil in their heart; they are continually gathered together for war.

They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the man of violence, who have purposed to overthrow my steps.

The proud have hid a snare for me and cords; they have spread a net; on the path they have set snares for me. Selah.

I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

O GOD the Lord, the strength of my saving health, cover thou my head in the day of battle.

¶ Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; do not further his wicked thought lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

As for the head of those that compass me about, let the perversion of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into deep pits, that they not rise up again.

11 The man with an evil tongue shall not be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the man of violence to overthrow him.

12 I know that the LORD will effect the judgment of the poor and the judgment of the destitute.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name; the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Psalm 142

Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave.

¶ I shall cry unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice shall I ask the LORD for mercy.

I shall pour out my complaint before him; before him I shall tell of my trouble.

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou didst know my path. In the way in which I walked have they secretly laid a snare for me.

¶ I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no one that would know me; I had no refuge; no one cared for my soul.

I cried unto thee, O LORD; I said, Thou art my hope and my portion in the land of the living.

Attend unto my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name; the righteous shall feast with me; when thou shalt have weaned me.

Psalm 141

A Psalm of David.

¶ LORD, I have called unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense, the gift of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a watch, O LORD, upon my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to do works with ungodliness with the men that work iniquity, and let me not eat of their dainties.

¶ Let the righteous smite me in mercy, and let him reprove me: and let not a flattering evil prince anoint my head, for my prayer shall ever be against his evil.

Their judges shall be thrown down from strong places; they shall hearken unto my words; for they are sweet.

Our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol, as when one cuts and cleaves wood upon the earth.

Therefore mine eyes look unto thee, O GOD the Lord; in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

Keep me from the hands of the snare which they have laid for me, and from the snares of the workers of iniquity.

10 Let the wicked fall together into their own nets, whilst I pass on ahead forever.

Psalm 143

A Psalm of David.

¶ Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my supplications for the sake of thy truth; answer me for the sake of thy righteousness.

And enter not into judgment with thy slave; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has smitten my life down to the ground; he has made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.

Therefore my spirit has become overwhelmed within me; my heart within me has become desolate.

I remembered the days of old; I meditated on all thy works; I mused on the work of thy hands.

I stretched forth my hands unto thee; my soul thirsted after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

¶ Hear me speedily, O LORD; my spirit fails; hide not thy face from me lest I be like those that go down into the grave.

Cause me to hear thy mercy in the morning, for in thee do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies; I flee unto thee.

10 Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God. Let thy good Spirit lead me into the land of uprightness.

11 By thy name, O LORD, thou shalt give me life; by thy righteousness thou shalt bring my soul out of trouble.

12 And by thy mercy thou shalt scatter my enemies and destroy all the adversaries of my soul; for I am thy slave.

Numbers 24:1-13

24 ¶ And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as the first and second times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness;

and lifting up his eyes, he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

Then he took up his parable and said, Balaam, the son of Beor, has said and the man whose eyes are open has said,

he who has heard the words of God has said, who saw the vision of the Almighty, fallen, but having his eyes open:

How beautiful are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy habitations, O Israel!

As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD has planted, and as cedars beside the waters.

From his branches he shall distil waters, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

God brought him forth out of Egypt; he has, as it were, the strength of a unicorn; he shall eat up the Gentiles his enemies and shall break their bones and pierce them through with his arrows.

He couched, he lay down as a lion and as a great lion; who shall awaken him? Blessed is he that blesses thee, and cursed is he that curses thee.

10 ¶ Then Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and smiting his hands together he said, I called thee to curse my enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.

11 Therefore, now flee thou to thy place; I said that I would honour thee; but, behold, the LORD has deprived thee of honour.

12 And Balaam replied unto Balak, Did I not declare also unto thy messengers which thou didst send unto me, saying,

13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own heart; but what the LORD saith that will I speak?

Romans 8:12-17

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

13 For if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die; but if through the Spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

14 For all that are led by the Spirit of God, the same are sons of God.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of slavery to be in fear again, but ye have received the Spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16 For the same Spirit bears witness unto our spirit that we are sons of God,

17 ¶ and if sons, also heirs certainly of God and joint-heirs with Christ, if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together with him.

Matthew 22:15-22

15 ¶ Then the Pharisees left and took counsel how they might entangle him in his word.

16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with those of Herod, saying, Master, we know that thou art a lover of truth and teachest the way of God with truth and that thou takest care for no man, for thou art no respecter of persons of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar or not?

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Show me the coin of the tribute. And they presented unto him a denarius.

20 And he said unto them, Whose is this image and supion?

21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled and left him and went away.
