Prologue—Psalms 1–2[a]

Psalm 1[b]

True Happiness

Blessed[c] is the man
    who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand in the way of sinners,
    nor sit in the company of scoffers.
Rather, his delight is in the law of the Lord,[d]
    and on that law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted near streams of water,
    which bears fruit in its season,
    and whose leaves never wither.[e]
In the same way,
    everything he does will prosper.
This is not true of the wicked,
    for they are like chaff that the wind blows away.[f]
Therefore, the wicked will not stand firm at the judgment,[g]
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over[h] the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.

Psalm 2[i]

Universal Reign of the Messiah

Why do the nations rage
    and the peoples devise futile plots?
The kings of the earth rise up,
    and the princes conspire together
against the Lord
    and against his Anointed One:[j]
“Let us finally break their shackles
    and cast away their chains from us.”
The one who is enthroned in heaven laughs;
    the Lord mocks their plans.
Then he rebukes them in his anger
    and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
“I myself have anointed my king
    on Zion, my holy mountain.”[k]
I will proclaim the decree[l] of the Lord:
    He said to me, “You are my son;
    this day I have begotten you.”
Simply make the request of me,
    and I will give you the nations as your inheritance,
    and the ends of the earth as your possession.[m]
You will rule them with an iron scepter;
    you will shatter them like a potter’s vessel.[n]
10 Therefore, O kings, pay heed;
    take warning, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice before him;
with trembling 12     bow down in homage[o]
lest he become angry
    and you perish from the way,
    for his wrath can flare up in an instant.

    who take refuge in him.

Psalm 3[q]

Trust in God in Time of Danger

A psalm of David. When he was fleeing from his son Absalom.

Lord, how great is the number of my enemies,
    how many are those who rise up against me.
How numerous are the ones who say of me,
    “He will not receive salvation from God.” Selah[r]
But you, O Lord, are a shield to protect me;
    you are my glory and the one who raises my head high.[s]
Whenever I cry aloud to the Lord,
    he answers me from his holy mountain.[t] Selah
I lie down and sleep;
    I awaken again, for the Lord sustains me.[u]
Thus, I will not fear the multitudes
    who have surrounded me on every side.
Rise up, O Lord!
    Rescue me, O my God!
You will strike all my enemies across the face[v]
    and break the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation comes from the Lord.
    May your blessing be upon your people. Selah

Psalm 4[w]

Joyful Confidence in God

For the director.[x] With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

When I call upon you, answer me, O God,
    you who uphold my rights.
When I was in distress, you set me free;
    have pity on me and listen to my prayer.
How long[y] will you people turn my glory into shame,
    cherishing what is worthless and pursuing what is false? Selah
Remember that the Lord wonderfully favors those who are faithful,[z]
    and the Lord listens when I call out to him.
[aa]When you are angry, be careful not to sin;
    reflect in silence
    as you lie upon your beds. Selah
Offer worthy sacrifices
    and place your trust in the Lord.
Many exclaim, “Who will show us better times!
    Let the light of your face shine on[ab] us, O Lord!”
You have granted my heart[ac] greater joy
    than others experience when grain and wine abound.
In peace I lie down and sleep,
    for only with your help, O Lord,
    can I rest secure.

Psalm 7

Psalm 7[a]

Appeal to the Divine Judge

A plaintive song of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush,[b] a Benjaminite.

Lord, my God, I take refuge in you;
    keep me safe from all my pursuers and deliver me,
lest like a lion they tear me to pieces
    and carry me off, with no one to rescue me.
Lord, my God, if I have done this,
    if my hands are stained with guilt,
if I have repaid a friend with treachery—
    I who spared the lives of those who without cause were my enemies—[c]
then let my foe pursue and overtake me;
    let him trample my life into the ground
    and leave my honor in the dust. Selah
Rise up, O Lord, in your indignation;
    rise against the fury of my enemies.
Rouse yourself for me,
    and fulfill the judgment you have decreed.
Let the peoples assemble in your presence
    as you sit above them enthroned on high.
    The Lord is the judge of the nations.
Therefore, pass judgment on me, O Lord, according to my righteousness,
    according to my innocence, O Most High.
10 Put an end to the malice of the wicked
    but continue to sustain the righteous,
O God of justice,
    you who search minds and hearts.[d]
11 God is a shield to me;
    he saves those who are upright of heart.
12 God is a just judge,
    a God who expresses his indignation every day.
13 When a sinner refuses to repent,
    God sharpens his sword,
    and he bends and aims his bow.
14 He has prepared deadly weapons for him
    and made his arrows into fiery shafts.
15 [e]Behold, he who conceives iniquity
    and is pregnant with mischief
    will give birth to lies.
16 He digs a pit and makes it deep,
    but he will fall into the trap he has made.
17 His wickedness will recoil upon his own head,
    and his violence will fall back on his own crown.
18 I will offer thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness,
and I will sing hymns of praise[f] to the name of the Lord Most High.

Daniel 1

Edifying Accounts: The Acts of Daniel and His Companions[a]

Daniel and His Companions Trained for the King’s Service

Chapter 1

The Food Test.[b] In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, marched into Jerusalem and laid siege to it.[c] The Lord allowed King Jehoiakim of Judah to fall into his power, as well as some of the vessels of the temple of God, which he carried off to the land of Shinar and placed in the temple treasury of his own god.

Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring into the palace some Israelites from the royal family and from the nobility; young men who were handsome and without physical defects of any kind, possessing an aptitude for every branch of knowledge and with great insight, clearly showing the necessary competence to serve in the king’s palace. Those so chosen were to be instructed in the language and the literature of the Chaldeans.

The king designated a daily allotment of food and wine from the royal table for them. After having been educated for three years, they would enter the king’s service. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah from the tribe of Judah. The chief eunuch assigned them different names: Daniel would be called Belteshazzar, Hananiah would be called Shadrach, Mishael would be called Meshach, and Azariah would be called Abednego.

However, Daniel was determined not to defile himself by partaking of food and wine from the royal table, and he pleaded with the chief eunuch to spare him this defilement. God influenced the eunuch to grant this favor and to treat Daniel with compassion. 10 However, the eunuch said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king. He has specifically designated what food and drink are to be supplied to you. If he should notice that you appear to be notably thinner than the other young men of your age, he would probably issue a command that I be beheaded.”

11 Then Daniel said to the guard whom the eunuch had assigned to supervise Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for a period of ten days, during which we will be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 You can then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat only the food designated by the king. Then deal with your servants and treat us in accordance with what you observe.”

14 The guard agreed to this proposal and tested them for a period of ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days they looked better nourished and healthier than any of the young men who had subsisted solely on the food provided by the king. 16 Therefore, the guard continued to withdraw the food and the wine they were to drink, and he provided them with vegetables. 17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and skill in every aspect of literature and learning. In addition, Daniel was given the gift of interpreting visions and dreams of every kind.

18 When the time arrived that the king had designated for their presentation to him, the eunuch brought all the young men into the presence of Nebuchadnezzar. 19 After the king had spoken with all of them, no one was found to compare with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore, all four of them were appointed to the king’s court. 20 In regard to whatever point of wisdom or understanding the king would question them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters throughout his entire kingdom. 21 Daniel remained there until the first year of the reign of King Cyrus.[d]

Chapter 1

Prologue[a]

An Authentic Communion of Life

This is what we proclaim to you:
what existed from the beginning,
what we have heard,
what we have seen with our own eyes,
what we have looked at
and touched with our hands—
we are speaking of the Word of life.[b]
That life was made visible;
we have seen it and bear witness,
proclaiming to you the eternal life[c]
that was with the Father
and was revealed to us.
What we have seen and heard
we declare to you
so that you may have fellowship[d] with us.
For our fellowship is with the Father
and with his Son Jesus Christ.
We are writing this
so that our joy may be complete.

Walk in the Light

God Is Light[e]

This is the message
that we have heard from him
and that we declare to you:
God is light,
and there is no darkness[f] at all in him.
If we claim that we have fellowship with him
while we continue to live in darkness,
we are lying and do not live in the truth.
However, if we live in the light
as he himself is in the light,
then we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus his Son
purifies us from all sin.

Deliverance from Sin[g]

If we claim that we are sinless,
we are only deceiving ourselves,
and the truth is not in us.
However, if we confess our sins,
he who is faithful and just
will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all wrongdoing.
10 If we say that we have never sinned,
we make him out to be a liar,
and his word is not in us.

John 17:1-11

The Priestly Prayer of Jesus[a]

Chapter 17

Knowledge of the Father and the Son.[b] After saying this, Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,

“Father, the hour has come.
Glorify your Son,
so that your Son may glorify you,
since you have given him authority
over all people,
so that he may give eternal life
to all those you have given him.
And eternal life is this:
to know you,
the only true God,
and the one you have sent,
Jesus Christ.
“I have glorified you on earth
by completing the work
that you entrusted to me.
So now, Father,
glorify me in your presence
with the glory I had with you
before the world began.

The Son and the Disciples[c]

“I have made your name known
to those whom you gave me from the world.
They were yours,
and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.
Now they have come to understand
that everything you gave me is from you.
For the words you gave to me
I have given to them,
and they have accepted them
and know with certainty
that I have come from you,
and they have believed that you sent me.
“It is for them that I pray.
I do not pray for the world,
but for those you gave me
because they are yours
10 Everything I have is yours,
and everything you have is mine,
and through them I have been glorified.
11 I will remain no longer in the world,
but they will still be in the world
while I will be coming to you.
“Holy Father,
protect by the power of your name
those you have given me,
so that they may be one,
even as we are one.
