Psalm 120-127

(A song for worship.)

A Prayer for the Lord's Help

When I am in trouble, I pray,
“Come and save me, Lord,
    from deceitful liars!”

What punishment is fitting
    for you deceitful liars?
Your reward should be
    sharp and flaming arrows!

But I must live as a foreigner
among the people of Meshech
and in the tents of Kedar.[a]
I have spent too much time
living among people
    who hate peace.
I am in favor of peace,
but when I speak of it,
    all they want is war.

(A song for worship.)

The Lord Will Protect His People

I look to the hills!
    Where will I find help?
It will come from the Lord,
    who created heaven and earth.

The Lord is your protector,
and he won't go to sleep
    or let you stumble.
The protector of Israel
doesn't doze
    or ever get drowsy.

The Lord is your protector,
there at your right side
to shade you from the sun.
You won't be harmed
by the sun during the day
or by the moon[b] at night.

The Lord will protect you
and keep you safe
    from all dangers.
The Lord will protect you
now and always
    wherever you go.

(A song by David for worship.)

A Song of Praise

It made me glad when they said,
“Let's go to the house
    of the Lord!”
Jerusalem, we are standing
    inside your gates.

Jerusalem, what a strong
    and beautiful city you are!
Every tribe of the Lord
obeys him and comes to you
    to praise his name.
David's royal throne is here
    where justice rules.

Jerusalem, we pray
    that you will have peace,
and that all will go well
    for those who love you.
May there be peace
inside your city walls
    and in your palaces.
Because of my friends
and my relatives,
    I will pray for peace.
And because of the house
of the Lord our God,
I will work for your good.

(A song for worship.)

A Prayer for Mercy

Our Lord and our God,
I turn my eyes to you,
    on your throne in heaven.
Servants look to their master,
but we will look to you,
until you have mercy on us.

Please have mercy, Lord!
We have been insulted
    more than we can stand,
and we can't take more abuse
from those proud,
    conceited people.

(A song by David for worship.)

Thanking the Lord for Victory

The Lord was on our side!
Let everyone in Israel say:
“The Lord was on our side!
Otherwise, the enemy attack
would have killed us all,
    because it was furious.
We would have been swept away
in a violent flood
    of high and roaring waves.”

Let's praise the Lord!
He protected us from enemies
    who were like wild animals,
and we escaped like birds
    from a hunter's torn net.

The Lord made heaven and earth,
and he is the one
    who sends us help.

(A song for worship.)

The Lord's People Are Safe

Everyone who trusts the Lord
    is like Mount Zion
that cannot be shaken
    and will stand forever.
Just as Jerusalem is protected
    by mountains on every side,
the Lord protects his people
by holding them in his arms
    now and forever.
He won't let the wicked
rule his people
or lead them to do wrong.
Let's ask the Lord to be kind
to everyone who is good
    and completely obeys him.

When the Lord punishes
    the wicked,
he will punish everyone else
who lives an evil life.
    Pray for peace in Israel!

(A song for worship.)

Celebrating the Harvest

It seemed like a dream
when the Lord brought us back
    to the city of Zion.[c]
We celebrated with laughter
    and joyful songs.
In foreign nations it was said,
“The Lord has worked miracles
    for his people.”
And so we celebrated
because the Lord had indeed
    worked miracles for us.

Our Lord, we ask you to bless
    our people again,
and let us be like streams
    in the Southern Desert.
We cried as we went out
    to plant our seeds.
Now let us celebrate
as we bring in the crops.
We cried on the way
    to plant our seeds,
but we will celebrate and shout
as we bring in the crops.

(A song by Solomon for worship.)

Only the Lord Can Bless a Home

Without the help of the Lord
it is useless to build a home
    or to guard a city.
It is useless to get up early
and stay up late
in order to earn a living.
God takes care of his own,
    even while they sleep.[d]

Children are a blessing
and a gift from the Lord.
Having a lot of children
to take care of you
    in your old age
is like a warrior
    with a lot of arrows.
The more you have,
the better off you will be,
because they will protect you
when your enemies
    attack you in court.

Jeremiah 25:8-17

You refused to listen to me, and now I will let you be attacked by nations from the north, and especially by my servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. You and other nearby nations will be destroyed and left in ruins forever. Everyone who sees what has happened will be shocked, but they will still make fun of you. 10 (A) I will put an end to your parties and wedding celebrations; no one will grind grain or be here to light the lamps at night. 11 (B) This country will be as empty as a desert, because I will make all of you the slaves of the king of Babylonia for 70 years.

12 When that time is up, I will punish the king of Babylonia and his people for everything they have done wrong, and I will turn that country into a wasteland forever. 13 My servant Jeremiah has told you what I said I will do to Babylonia and to the other nations, and he wrote it all down in this book. I will do everything I threatened. 14 I will pay back the Babylonians for every wrong they have done. Great kings from many other nations will conquer the Babylonians and force them to be slaves.

The Cup Full of God's Anger

15 The Lord God of Israel showed me a vision in which he said, “Jeremiah, here is a cup filled with the wine of my anger. Take it and make every nation drink some. 16 They will vomit and act crazy, because of the war this cup of anger will bring to them.”

17 I took the cup from the Lord's hand, and I went to the kings of the nations and made each of them drink some.

Romans 10:1-13

10 Dear friends, my greatest wish and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know they love God, but they don't understand what makes people acceptable to him. So they refuse to trust God, and they try to be acceptable by obeying the Law. But Christ makes the Law no longer necessary[a] for those who become acceptable to God by faith.

Anyone Can Be Saved

(A) Moses said a person could become acceptable to God by obeying the Law. He did this when he wrote, “If you want to live, you must do all the Law commands.”

(B) But people whose faith makes them acceptable to God will never ask, “Who will go up to heaven to bring Christ down?” Neither will they ask, “Who will go down into the world of the dead to raise him to life?”

All who are acceptable because of their faith simply say, “The message is as near as your mouth or your heart.” And this is the same message we preach about faith. So you will be saved, if you honestly say, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe with all your heart that God raised him from death. 10 God will accept you and save you, if you truly believe this and tell it to others.

11 (C) The Scriptures say no one who has faith will be disappointed, 12 no matter if that person is a Jew or a Gentile. There is only one Lord, and he is generous to everyone who asks for his help. 13 (D) All who call out to the Lord will be saved.

John 9:18-41

18 But the Jewish leaders would not believe that the man had once been blind. They sent for his parents 19 and asked them, “Is this the son that you said was born blind? How can he now see?”

20 The man's parents answered, “We are certain that he is our son, and we know that he was born blind. 21 But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. Ask him! He is old enough to speak for himself.”

22-23 The man's parents said this because they were afraid of their leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah.

24 The leaders called the man back and said, “Swear by God to tell the truth! We know that Jesus is a sinner.”

25 The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!”

26 “What did he do to you?” they asked. “How did he heal your eyes?”

27 The man answered, “I have already told you once, and you refused to listen. Why do you want me to tell you again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”

28 The leaders insulted the man and said, “You are his follower! We are followers of Moses. 29 We are sure God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where Jesus comes from.”

30 “How strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know where he comes from. 31 We know that God listens only to people who love and obey him. God doesn't listen to sinners. 32 And this is the first time in history anyone has ever given sight to someone born blind. 33 Jesus could not do anything unless he came from God.”

34 The leaders told the man, “You have been a sinner since the day you were born! Do you think you can teach us anything?” Then they said, “You can never come back into any of our synagogues!”

35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he went and found the man. Then Jesus asked, “Do you have faith in the Son of Man?”

36 He replied, “Sir, if you will tell me who he is, I will put my faith in him.”

37 “You have already seen him,” Jesus answered, “and right now he is talking with you.”

38 The man said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!” Then he worshiped Jesus.

39 Jesus told him, “I came to judge the people of this world. I am here to give sight to the blind and to make blind everyone who can see.”

40 When the Pharisees heard Jesus say this, they asked, “Are we blind?”

41 Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty. But now that you claim to see, you will keep on being guilty.”
