Psalm 119:1-24

The Word of God

119 ·Happy [Blessed] are those ·who live pure lives [L whose way is blameless],
    who follow the Lord’s ·teachings [instructions; law].
Happy are those who keep his ·rules [decrees; testimonies],
    who ·try to obey [L seek] him with their whole heart.
They don’t do what is wrong;
    they follow his ways.
Lord, you ·gave [commanded] your ·orders [precepts]
    to be obeyed completely.
·I wish I [L O that my ways] were more ·loyal [steadfast; established; set]
    in obeying your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
Then I would not be ashamed
    ·when I study [staring/gazing at] your commands.
When I learned that your ·laws [judgments] are fair,
    I ·praised [thanked] you with an ·honest [upright] heart.
I will obey your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements],
    so please don’t ever ·leave [abandon; forsake] me.

How can a young person ·live a pure life [L keep his way pure]?
    By ·obeying [guarding; keeping] your word.
10 With all my heart I ·try to obey [seek] you.
    Don’t let me ·break [stray from] your commands.
11 I have ·taken your words to heart [treasured/stored your words in my heart]
    so I would not sin against you.
12 Lord, you ·should be praised [are blessed].
    Teach me your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
13 My lips will ·tell about [recount]
    all the ·laws you have spoken [L judgments of your mouth].
14 I enjoy ·living by your rules [the way of your decrees/testimonies]
    as people enjoy great riches.
15 I ·think about [meditate on] your ·orders [precepts]
    and ·study [look at] your ways.
16 I enjoy ·obeying your demands [your statutes/ordinances/requirements],
    and I will not forget your word.

17 ·Do good [Grant this] to me, your servant, so I can live,
    so I can ·obey [keep; guard] your word.
18 Open my eyes to see
    the ·miracles [wonders] in your ·teachings [instructions; law].
19 I am a ·stranger [sojourner; alien resident] ·on earth [or in the land].
    Do not hide your commands from me.
20 ·I wear myself out [My soul pines away] with ·desire [longing]
    for your ·laws [judgments] all the time.
21 You ·scold [rebuke; reprimand] ·proud [arrogant] people;
    those who ·ignore [wander from] your commands are cursed.
22 ·Don’t let me be insulted and hated [L Take away insult and contempt]
    because I keep your ·rules [decrees; testimonies].
23 Even if princes sit around and speak against me,
    I, your servant, will ·think [meditate] about your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
24 Your ·rules [statutes; ordinances; requirements] give me pleasure;
    they ·give me good advice [L are my advisors/counselors].

Psalm 12-14

A Prayer Against Liars

For the director of music. Upon the ·sheminith [L eighth; C a reference to an eight-stringed instrument or possibly the manner of singing]. A psalm of David.

12 Save me, Lord, because the ·good [faithful; godly; covenantal; loyal] people are all gone;
    ·no true believers are left on earth [L the faithful have vanished among humanity].
Everyone ·lies [L speaks falsehood] to his neighbors;
    they ·say one thing and mean another [speak with flattering lips and with a double heart/L heart and heart].
The Lord will ·stop [L cut off] those flattering lips
    and those bragging tongues.
They say, “Our tongues will ·help us win [prevail].
    ·We can say what we wish [L Our lips belong to us]; ·no one [L who…?] is our master.”

But the Lord says,
    “I will now rise up,
    because the ·poor [weak] are ·being hurt [destroyed; plundered; oppressed].
Because of the ·moans [groans; sighs] of the ·helpless [needy],
    I will give them the ·help [victory] they ·want [long for].”
The Lord’s ·words [or promises] are ·pure [flawless],
    like silver ·purified [refined] ·by fire [or in a furnace],
·purified [refined] seven times over [18:30; 119:140].

Lord, you will ·keep us safe [L guard/protect them];
    you will always ·protect [guard] us from such ·people [a generation].
But the wicked ·are [L walk] all around us;
    ·everyone loves what is wrong [L what is vile is lifted up among the sons of man/humanity].

A Prayer for God to Be Near

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

13 How long will you forget me, Lord? Forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I ·worry [or bear pain; L hold counsels]
    and ·feel sad [hold sorrow] in my heart all day?
How long will my enemy ·win [rise up] over me?

Lord, look at me.
    Answer me, my God;
    ·tell me [L light up my eyes], or I will ·die [L sleep the sleep of death].
Otherwise my enemy will say, “I have ·won [finished him off]!”
    ·Those against me [My foes] will rejoice that I’ve been ·defeated [shaken; moved].

I ·trust [have confidence] in your ·love [loyalty; covenant love].
    My heart ·is happy [rejoices] because ·you saved me [of your victory/salvation].
I sing to the Lord
    because he has ·taken care of [been good to] me.

The Unbelieving Fool

For the director of music. Of David.

14 Fools say ·to themselves [L in their hearts],
    “There is no God [C Psalm 53 largely parallels this psalm].”
·Fools are evil [L They are corrupt] and do ·terrible [detestable] things [Deut. 32:5];
    there is no one who does anything good.

The Lord looked down from heaven on all people
    to see if anyone ·understood [L was wise/insightful],
    if anyone was ·looking to God for help [seeking God].
But all have ·turned [wandered] away.
    Together, everyone has become ·evil [perverse].
There is no one who does anything good,
    not even one [Rom. 3:10–12].

Don’t ·the wicked [L those who do evil] ·understand [know]?

They ·destroy [consume; L eat] my people as if they were ·eating [consuming] bread.
    They do not ·ask the Lord for help [call on the Lord].
But the wicked are ·filled [terrified] with terror,
    because God is with ·those who do what is right [the company of the righteous].
The wicked ·upset [confuse; frustrate] the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord ·will protect them [is their refuge].

I pray that ·victory [salvation] will come to Israel from Mount Zion [C the location of the Temple]!
    May the Lord ·bring them back [restore the fortunes of his people; C perhaps at the end of the exile].
Then the people of Jacob will rejoice,
    and the people of Israel will be glad.

Deuteronomy 1:1-18

Moses Talks to the Israelites

·This is the message [L These are the words] Moses gave to all the people of Israel in the ·desert [wilderness] east of the Jordan River. They were in the ·desert [wilderness] area near Suph, between Paran and the towns of Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

(The trip from Mount Sinai to Kadesh Barnea on the Mount Seir road takes eleven days.) ·Forty years after the Israelites had left Egypt [L In the fortieth year], on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses told the ·people [L sons; T children] of Israel everything the Lord had commanded him to tell them. This was after the Lord had ·defeated [L struck] Sihon and Og. Sihon was king of the Amorite people and lived in Heshbon. Og was king of Bashan and lived in Ashteroth and Edrei [Num. 21:21–35].

Now ·the Israelites [L they] were ·east of [L beyond] the Jordan River in the land of Moab, and there Moses began to ·explain [make clear] ·what God had commanded [L this law/instruction]. He said:

The Lord our God spoke to us at ·Mount Sinai [L Horeb; C another name for Sinai] and said, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. ·Get ready [L Turn face], and go to the mountain country of the Amorites, and to all the places around there—the ·Jordan Valley [L Arabah], the mountains, the ·western hills [L Shephelah], the ·southern area [L Negev], the seacoast, the land of Canaan, and Lebanon. Go as far as the great river, the Euphrates [Gen. 15:18–21]. See, I have given you this land, so go in and take it for yourselves. The Lord ·promised it [swore] to your ancestors—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their descendants [Gen. 12:1–3; 15:17–20].”

Moses Appoints Leaders

At that time I said, “I am not able to ·take care of you [L lift you up; bear you] by myself. 10 The Lord your God has made you grow in number so that there are as many of you as there are stars in the ·sky [heavens; Gen. 15:5; 22:17; 26:4; Ex. 32:13]. 11 I pray that the Lord, the God of your ·ancestors [fathers], will give you a thousand times more people and ·do all the wonderful things [L bless you as] he promised. 12 ·But I cannot take care of [L How can I lift up/bear…?] your problems, your troubles, and your arguments by myself. 13 So choose some men from each tribe—wise men who have ·understanding [discernment] and experience—and I will make them leaders over you.”

14 And you said, “That’s a good thing to do.”

15 So I took the wise and experienced leaders of your tribes, and I made them your leaders. I appointed commanders over a thousand people, over a hundred people, over fifty people, and over ten people and made them officers over your tribes. 16 Then I told your ·leaders [judges], “Listen to the arguments between your people. Judge fairly between two ·Israelites [relatives; L brothers] or between an ·Israelite [L relative; brother] and a ·foreigner [resident alien]. 17 When you judge, ·be fair to everyone [do not show favoritism]; don’t act as if one person is more important than another, and don’t be ·afraid of [intimidated by] anyone, because your decision comes from God. Bring the hard cases to me, and I will judge them.” 18 At that time I told you everything you must do [Ex. 18:13–23].

Romans 9:1-18

God and the Jewish People

I am telling you the truth ·as a follower of Christ [or with Christ as my witness; L in Christ]; I do not lie. My conscience is ·ruled by [or guided by] the Holy Spirit, and it ·tells [testifies to] me I am not lying. I have great sorrow and ·always feel much sadness [unceasing/constant anguish]. [L For] I would even wish that I were cursed and cut off from ·Christ [or the Messiah] ·if that would help [for the sake of] my Jewish brothers and sisters, my ·people [countrymen; L relatives according to the flesh]. They are the people of Israel, God’s ·chosen [L adopted] children. They ·have seen [or have] the glory of God, and they have the ·agreements that God made between himself and his people [L covenants]. God gave them the law of Moses and the ·right way of worship [or temple worship] and his promises. ·They are the descendants of our great ancestors [L They have the fathers/patriarchs], and ·they are the earthly family into which Christ was born [or from their descendants the Messiah came], ·who is God over all. Praise him forever [or May God, who is over all, be praised forever]! Amen.

It is not that ·God failed to keep his promise to them [L God’s word failed]. ·But only some of the people of Israel are truly God’s people [L Because not all those (descended) from Israel are Israel], ·and only some of Abraham’s descendants are true children of Abraham [L nor are all of Abraham’s seed/descendants (true) children]. But God said to Abraham: “·The descendants I promised you will be from Isaac [or Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name; Gen. 21:12].” This means that ·not all of Abraham’s descendants [L it is not the children of the flesh who] are God’s true children. [L But; Rather] ·Abraham’s true children [L Those counted as Abraham’s descendants/seed] are ·those who become God’s children because of the promise God made to Abraham [L the children of the promise]. God’s promise to Abraham was this: “·At the right time [At the appointed time; or About this time next year] I will return, and Sarah will have a son [Gen. 18:10, 14].” 10 And that is not all. Rebekah’s sons ·had the same father, [or were conceived at the same time by] our ·father [ancestor; forefather] Isaac. But before the two boys were born, God told Rebekah, “The older will serve the younger [Gen. 25:23].” This was before the boys had done anything good or bad. God said this so that ·the one chosen would be chosen because of God’s own plan [or the plan/purpose God had chosen would continue/prevail]. ·Jacob was chosen [or God’s plan continued] not because of ·anything Jacob did [L works], but because ·he was the one God wanted to call [or of the One who called him]. 13 As the Scripture says, “I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau [Mal. 1:2–3].”

14 So what should we say about this? Is God ·unfair [unjust]? ·In no way [Absolutely not!; May it never be!; 7:13]. 15 [L For] God said to Moses, “I will show ·kindness [mercy] to anyone to whom I want to show ·kindness [mercy], and I will show ·compassion [pity] to anyone to whom I want to show ·compassion [pity; Ex. 33:19].” 16 So God’s choice does not depend on ·what people want [human desire; or human will] or ·try to do [effort; exertion], but on God’s ·mercy [kindness]. 17 The Scripture says to ·the king of Egypt [L Pharaoh]: “I ·made you king [L raised you up] for this reason: to show my power in you so that my name will be ·talked about [proclaimed] in all the earth [Ex. 9:16].” 18 So God shows mercy where he wants to show mercy, and he ·makes stubborn [hardens] the people he wants to ·make stubborn [harden].

Matthew 23:27-39

27 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like ·tombs that are painted white [whitewashed tombs]. Outside, those tombs ·look fine [appear beautiful], but inside, they are full of the bones of dead people and all kinds of ·unclean things [filth; corruption; impurity]. 28 It is the same with you. ·People look at you and think you are good [or On the outside you look like righteous people], but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and ·evil [lawlessness].

29 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets, and you ·show honor to [decorate; adorn] the graves of ·those who lived good lives [L the righteous]. 30 You say, ‘If we had lived during the time of our ancestors, we would not have ·helped them kill [L been partners in the blood of] the prophets.’ 31 But you ·give proof [L testify against yourselves] that you are ·descendants [sons; children] of those who murdered the prophets. 32 ·And you will complete the sin that your ancestors started [or Go ahead and finish what your fathers started!; L Fill up the measure of your fathers].

33 “You ·are snakes [serpents]! A ·family of poisonous snakes [T brood/offspring of vipers]! How are you going to escape ·God’s judgment [the sentence/judgment/damnation of hell/Gehenna; 5:22]? 34 ·So I tell you this [For this reason]: I am sending to you prophets and wise men and ·teachers [scribes; experts in the law]. Some of them you will kill and crucify. Some of them you will ·beat [scourge; flog] in your synagogues and ·chase [hunt; persecute] from town to town. 35 So ·you will be guilty for [L upon you will come] ·the death of all the good people who have been killed on earth [L all the righteous blood shed on the earth]—from the ·murder [L blood] of that ·good [righteous] man Abel to the murder of Zechariah son of Berakiah, whom you murdered between the ·Temple [sanctuary] and the altar [C in the book order of the Hebrew Old Testament, Abel (Gen. 4:8) and Zechariah (2 Chr. 24:21) were the first and last men to be murdered]. 36 I tell you the truth, all of these things will happen to ·you people who are living now [L this generation].

Jesus Grieves for Jerusalem(A)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone to death those who are sent to you. ·Many times [How often] I wanted to gather your ·people [L children] as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you ·did not let me [refused]. 38 ·Now [L Look; T Behold] your house ·will be [L is] left ·completely empty [abandoned; deserted; desolate; Jer. 22:5]. 39 [L For] I tell you, you will not see me again until that time when you will say, ‘·God bless [L Blessed is] the One who comes in the name of the Lord [Ps. 118:26].’”
