Psalm 85[a]

Prayer for the People’s Salvation

For the director.[b] A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Lord, you showed favor to your land;
    you restored the good fortune of Jacob.[c]
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you canceled all their sins. Selah
You cast aside all your wrath;
    you put an end to your great anger.
[d]Restore us once again, O God, our Savior,
    and cease your displeasure toward us.
Will you remain angry with us forever?
    Will you hold onto your wrath for all generations?
Will you not once again give us life
    so that your people may exult in you?
Show us, O Lord, your kindness[e]
    and grant us your salvation.
[f]I will listen for God’s response;
    surely the Lord will proclaim peace to his people, his saints,[g]
    to those who turn to him with their whole heart.
10 His salvation is indeed near for those who fear him;
    his glory[h] will dwell in our land.
11 [i]Kindness and faithfulness[j] will meet;
    righteousness and peace will embrace.
12 Faithfulness will spring forth from the earth,
    and righteousness[k] will look down from heaven.
13 [l]The Lord will grant us prosperity,[m]
    and our land will yield its harvest.
14 Righteousness will go forth in front of him,
    and he will set us on the way he treads.

Psalm 86[n]

Prayer in Suffering and Distress

A prayer of David.

Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.[o]
Preserve my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who puts his trust in you.
You are my God;[p] have pity on me, O Lord,
    for to you I cry out all day long.
Give joy to the soul of your servant,
    for to you, O Lord,
    I lift up my soul.[q]
O Lord, you are kind and forgiving,
    filled with kindness[r] for all who cry to you.
Hear my prayer, O Lord,
    and listen to my voice in supplication.
In the time of trouble I call to you,
    for you will answer me.
There is no one among the gods like you, O Lord,
    nor can any deeds compare with yours.
All the nations[s] you have made
    will come and bow down before you, O Lord,
    and glorify your name.
10 For you are great and you do marvelous deeds;[t]
    you alone are God.
11 Teach me your ways, O Lord,
    so that I may walk in your truth;
let me worship your name
    with an undivided heart.[u]
12 I will praise you with all my heart,[v]
    O Lord, my God,
    and I will glorify your name forever.
13 Your kindness[w] toward me is great;
    you have rescued me from the depths of the netherworld.
14 Arrogant men are rising up against me, O God;
    a violent mob seeks my life;
    they do not keep you before their eyes.[x]
15 But you, O Lord, are a merciful and compassionate God,
    slow to anger and abounding in kindness and faithfulness.[y]
16 Turn to me and grant me your gracious favor;
    endow your servant with strength
    and rescue the child of your handmaid.[z]
17 Grant me a sign of your favor,[aa]
    so that those who hate me
    may see it and be put to shame,
because you, O Lord,
    have helped and comforted me.

Psalm 91-92

Psalm 91[a]

Security under God’s Protection

You who abide in the shelter of the Most High,[b]
    who rest in the shadow of the Almighty,
say to the Lord, “You are my refuge and my fortress,
    my God in whom I place my trust.”
He will rescue you from the snare of the fowler[c]
    and from virulent pestilence.
With his feathers he will shelter you,[d]
    and you will take refuge under his wings;
    his faithfulness serves as a protective shield.
You will not fear the terror by night[e]
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the plague[f] that lays waste at midday.
Even though a thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    such evils will not afflict you.
Rather, your own eyes will behold[g]
    the punishment inflicted on the wicked.
You have made the Lord your refuge
    and chosen the Most High to be your dwelling.
10 Therefore, no evil will threaten you,
    no calamity will come near your dwelling.
11 [h]For he will command his angels[i] about you—
    to guard you wherever you go.
12 They will lift you up with their hands,
    lest you dash your foot against a stone.[j]
13 You will tread upon the asp and the viper;
    you will trample the lion and the dragon.[k]
14 [l]“Because he loves me, I will deliver him,
    I will raise high[m] the one who acknowledges my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer,
    and I will be with him in time of distress;
    I will rescue him and cause him to be honored.[n]
16 I will reward him with a long life
    and show him my salvation.”[o]

Psalm 92[p]

Praise of God’s Just Rule

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath.[q]

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
    to sing praise to your name,[r] O Most High,
to proclaim your kindness[s] in the morning
    and your faithfulness during the night,
with the ten-stringed harp,
    to the melody of the lyre.
[t]Your deeds, O Lord, have caused me to exult;
    at the works of your hands I shout for joy:
How great are your deeds, O Lord!
    How profound are your thoughts!
[u]A senseless person cannot grasp this;
    a fool[v] is unable to comprehend it.
Even though the wicked may sprout like grass
    and all evildoers may prosper,
they are doomed to eternal destruction,[w]
    whereas you, O Lord, are exalted forever.[x]
10 Surely your enemies, O Lord,
    surely your enemies will perish,
    and all evildoers will be scattered.
11 [y]You have given me the strength of a wild bull
    and anointed me with fresh oil.
12 My eyes have witnessed the downfall of my enemies;
    my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.
13 [z]The righteous will flourish like the palm tree;
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.
14 They are planted in the house of the Lord[aa]
    and will flourish in the courts of our God.
15 They still will bear fruit, in their old age,
    and they will remain fresh and green,
16 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
    he is my Rock, in whom no injustice can be found.”

Ezekiel 1:28-3:3

28 The radiance of the encircling light was like a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I beheld it, I prostrated myself on the ground, and I heard a voice speaking to me.

Chapter 2

The Vison of the Scroll. He said to me: Stand up, son of man.[a] I wish to speak with you. As he spoke to me, a Spirit entered into me and stood me on my feet, and I listened to him speaking.

He said to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me. They and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day. Because they are obstinate and stubborn, I am sending you to them. You shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord God.” Whether they listen to you or whether in their rebelliousness they refuse to listen, they will know that there is a prophet among them.

But as for you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or of what they say, even though they resist and reject you and you find yourself sitting on scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words or be alarmed by their looks, for they are a rebellious tribe. You will deliver my words to them whether they listen or whether in their rebelliousness, they refuse to listen. But as for you, son of man, listen to what I say to you and do not be rebellious like that rebellious tribe. Open your mouth and eat what I am about to give you.

I saw a hand stretched out to me, and in it was a written scroll. 10 He unrolled it in front of me. It had writing on the front and on the back, and written on it were words, of lamentation and dirges and woe.

Chapter 3

He said to me: Son of man, eat what is in front of you. Eat this scroll, and then go forth to speak to the house of Israel. Therefore, I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. He said to me: Son of man, eat this scroll that I have given you, and eat your fill. Then I consumed it, and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.

Hebrews 4:14-5:6

14 A Compassionate High Priest.[a] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our profession of faith. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tested in every respect as we are, but without sinning. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace when we are in need of help.

Chapter 5

Every high priest is taken from among men to represent them in their dealings with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.[b] He is able to deal patiently with those who are ignorant and misguided, since he himself is subject to weakness. And as a result of this, he must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. Moreover, one does not assume this position of honor on his own initiative, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

Even Christ did not confer upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. Rather, he was appointed by the one who said to him:

“You are my Son;
    this day I have begotten you.”

And he says in another place:

“You are a priest forever,
    according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Luke 9:28-36

28 Jesus Is Transfigured.[a] About eight days after he had said this, Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face underwent a change, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, there were two men talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which would come to pass in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake they beheld his glory and the two men standing beside him.

33 When they were ready to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not truly know what he was saying. 34 While he was speaking, a cloud came and cast its shadow over them, and the three disciples became frightened as they entered the cloud. 35 Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One.[b] Listen to him.” 36 After the voice had spoken, they beheld only Jesus. They kept silent and at that time they did not tell anyone about what they had witnessed.
