Book of Common Prayer
Yahweh Loves the Gates of Zion
Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm. A Song.
87 His (A)foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 Yahweh (B)loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 (C)Glorious things are spoken of you,
O (D)city of God. [a]Selah.
4 “I shall mention [b](E)Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and (F)Tyre with [c](G)Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’”
5 But of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in her”;
And the Most High Himself will (H)establish her.
6 Yahweh will count when He (I)registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah.
7 And (J)singers, just like the (K)dancers, will all say,
“All my (L)springs are in you.”
BOOK 4
From Everlasting to Everlasting, You Are God
A Prayer of [a]Moses, the man of God.
90 Lord, You have been our [b](A)dwelling place from generation to generation.
2 Before (B)the mountains were born
[c]Or You (C)brought forth the earth and the world,
Even (D)from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
3 You (E)turn man back into dust
And say, “Return, O sons of men.”
4 For (F)a thousand years in Your sight
Are like (G)yesterday when it passes by,
[d]Or as a (H)watch in the night.
5 You (I)have [e]swept them away like a flood, they [f](J)fall asleep;
In the morning they are like (K)grass which [g]sprouts anew.
6 In the morning it (L)blossoms and [h]sprouts anew;
Toward evening it (M)withers away and (N)dries up.
7 For we have been (O)consumed by Your anger
And by Your wrath we have been [i]dismayed.
8 You have (P)set our iniquities before You,
Our (Q)secret sins in the light of Your presence.
9 For (R)all our days have declined in Your fury;
We have finished our years like a [j]sigh.
10 As for the days of our [k]life, [l]they contain seventy years,
Or if due to might, (S)eighty years,
Yet their pride is but (T)labor and wickedness;
For soon it is gone and we (U)fly away.
11 Who knows the (V)power of Your anger
And Your fury, according to the (W)fear [m]that is due You?
12 [n]So (X)teach us to number our days,
That we may [o](Y)present to You a heart of wisdom.
13 (Z)Return, O Yahweh; (AA)how long will it be?
And [p]be (AB)sorry for Your slaves.
14 O (AC)satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may (AD)sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 (AE)Make us glad [q]according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the (AF)years we have seen [r]evil.
16 Let Your (AG)work appear to Your slaves
And Your (AH)majesty [s]to their sons.
17 Let the (AI)favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And (AJ)establish for us the work of our hands;
Establish the work of our hands.
His Lovingkindness Endures Forever
136 (A)Give thanks to Yahweh, for (B)He is good,
For (C)His lovingkindness endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the (D)God of gods,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the (E)Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
4 To Him who (F)alone does great [a]wonders,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
5 To Him who (G)made the heavens (H)with [b]skill,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
6 To Him who (I)spread out the earth above the waters,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
7 To Him who (J)made the great lights,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
8 The (K)sun to rule [c]by day,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
9 The (L)moon and stars to rule [d]by night,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
10 To Him who (M)struck [e]the Egyptians through their firstborn,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
11 Then (N)brought Israel out from their midst,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
12 With a (O)strong hand and an (P)outstretched arm,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
13 To Him who (Q)divided the [f]Red Sea in two,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
14 And (R)made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
15 But (S)He [g]overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the [h]Red Sea,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
16 To Him who (T)led His people through the wilderness,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
17 To Him who (U)struck great kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
18 And (V)killed [i]mighty kings,
For His lovingkindness endures forever:
19 (W)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
20 And (X)Og, king of Bashan,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
21 And (Y)gave their land as an inheritance,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
22 Even an inheritance to Israel His (Z)servant,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
23 Who (AA)remembered us in our low estate,
For His lovingkindness endures forever,
24 And has (AB)snatched us from our adversaries,
For His lovingkindness endures forever;
25 Who (AC)gives food to all flesh,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the (AD)God of heaven,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Zebul Deceives Abimelech
22 And Abimelech governed over Israel three years. 23 (A)Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the lords of Shechem; and the lords of Shechem (B)dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 (C)so that the violence [a]done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and (D)their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the lords of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. 25 And the lords of Shechem set [b]men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who might pass by them along the road; and it was told to Abimelech.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the lords of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower. 52 So Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 But (A)a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and she smashed his skull. 54 Then (B)he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and put me to death, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So [a]the young man pierced him through, and he died. 55 Then the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, so each went away to his [b]home. 56 Thus (C)God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 God also returned all the evil of the men of Shechem on their own heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came [c]upon them.
Distribution Among Needy Believers
32 And the [a]congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and not one was saying that any of his possessions was his own, but, for them, (A)everything was common. 33 And (B)with great power the apostles were bearing (C)witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses (D)would sell them and bring the [b]proceeds of the sales 35 and (E)lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be (F)distributed to each as any had need.
36 Now Joseph, a Levite of (G)Cyprian birth, who was also called (H)Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of [c](I)Encouragement), 37 and who owned a field, sold it and brought the money and (J)laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Ananias and Sapphira
5 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and (K)kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s [d]full knowledge. And bringing a portion of it, he (L)laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (M)Satan filled your heart to lie (N)to the Holy Spirit and to (O)keep back some of the price of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not [e]under your authority? Why is it that you laid this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but (P)to God.” 5 And as he heard these words, Ananias (Q)fell down and breathed his last; and (R)great fear came over all who heard. 6 And the young men rose up and (S)wrapped him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
7 Now there was an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you were paid (T)this much for the land?” And she said, “Yes, that much.” 9 Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to (U)put (V)the Spirit of the [f]Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” 10 And immediately she (W)fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And (X)great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard these things.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
13 (A)And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus (B)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (C)And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling (D)the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making (E)My Father’s house a [a]place of business.” 17 His (F)disciples remembered that it was written, “(G)Zeal for Your house will consume me.” 18 (H)The Jews then said to Him, “(I)What sign do You show us [b]as your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “(J)Destroy this [c]sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 (K)The Jews then said, “It took (L)forty-six years to build this sanctuary, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking about (M)the sanctuary of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His (N)disciples (O)remembered that He said this; and they believed (P)the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at (Q)the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, (R)when they saw His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, [d]on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for (S)He knew all men, 25 and because He had no need that anyone bear witness concerning man, (T)for He Himself knew what was in man.
