97 [a]I truly love your law.
    It is my meditation throughout the day.
98 [b]Your precept has given me greater wisdom than my enemies,
    for it is mine forever.

    because I meditate on your commands.
100 I have greater insight than the elders,[c]
    because I keep your commandments.
101 I point my feet away from evil paths
    so that I might observe your word.
102 I refuse to ignore your judgments,
    for it is you yourself who have taught me.
103 Your words are sweet to my palate,
    even sweeter to my tongue than honey.[d]
104 Through your commandments I achieve wisdom;
    therefore, I hate every way that is false.

Psalm 81[a]

Exhortation To Worship Worthily

For the director.[b] “Upon the gittith.” Of Asaph.

Sing out your joy to God our strength;
    shout aloud to the God of Jacob.[c]
Raise the chant and sound the tambourine;
    play the pleasant harp and the lyre.
Sound the trumpet at the new moon,
    and also at the full moon on the day of our Feast.[d]
For this is a law in Israel,
    a decree of the God of Jacob.
He imposed this testimony on Joseph[e]
    when he departed from the land of Egypt.
I now hear an unfamiliar voice:
    “I lifted the burden from their shoulders;
    their hands put aside the laborer’s basket.[f]
When you cried out to me in distress, I rescued you;[g]
    from the thunderclouds I answered you;
    I tested you at the waters of Meribah: Selah
“ ‘Listen to me, O my people, while I warn you.
    O Israel, if only you would listen to me!
10 You must not accept a foreign god in your presence;
    you must not bow down to an alien deity.
11 I am the Lord, your God,
    who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
    open your mouth[h] wide so that I may fill it.’
12 “But my people did not listen to my voice;
    Israel refused to obey me.[i]
13 So I abandoned them to their stubborn hearts[j]
    and let them follow their own devices.
14 [k]“If only my people would listen to me,
    if only Israel would walk in my ways,[l]
15 I would quickly subdue their enemies
    and raise my hand[m] against their foes.
16 “Then those who hate the Lord[n] would tremble before him,
    for their doom would last forever.
17 But Israel he would feed with the finest of wheat[o]
    and fill them with honey from the rock.”

Psalm 82[p]

Judgment on Abuse of Authority

A psalm of Asaph.[q]

God takes his place in the divine council;[r]
    in the midst of the gods he pronounces judgment:
“How long will you issue unfair judgments
    and rule in favor of those who are wicked?[s] Selah
[t]“Grant justice to the weak and the orphan;
    defend the rights of the lowly and the poor.
Rescue the wretched and the needy;
    free them from the hand of the wicked.
“They neither know nor understand;
    they wander around in darkness
    while all the foundations of the earth[u] are crumbling.
[v]I declare, ‘Although you are gods,
    all of you sons of the Most High,
you will die as all men do;
    like any ruler you will fall.’ ”[w]
Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,
    for all the nations belong to you.[x]

Numbers 11:24-35

24 Seventy Elders. So Moses went out and proclaimed the words of the Lord to the people. He brought seventy of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. 25 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit that was upon him and placed it upon the seventy elders. When the Spirit descended upon them, they began to prophesy,[a] although they did not do so again.

26 But two men had remained in the camp. One was named Eldad, and the other was named Medad. The Spirit descended upon them. They had been on the list, but they had not gone out to the tabernacle. They began to prophesy in the camp. 27 A young man ran and informed Moses, saying, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 Joshua, the son of Nun, who had been an aide to Moses since he was young, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for me? Would that all of the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them!” 30 Moses then returned to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

31 Now a wind came forth from the Lord, and it brought quail from the sea, making them fall near the camp. They were all around the camp, a day’s journey on one side and a day’s journey on the other side. They were piled up on the surface of the land two cubits high.

32 The people stayed up all day, and all night, and all the next day gathering the quail. The least that any of them gathered was ten homers. They spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and they were still chewing on it, the anger of the Lord arose against the people and the Lord struck the people with a horrible plague. 34 This is why that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah,[b] because they buried the people who had fallen victim to their desires there. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth and they camped there.

Romans 1:28-2:11

28 Furthermore, since these people did not see fit to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their depraved way of thinking and to all types of vile behavior. 29 As a result, they are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice. Reveling in envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice, they are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful, as they devise new ways of doing evil and rebel against their parents. 31 They are senseless, faithless, heartless, and ruthless. 32 Although they are fully cognizant of God’s decree that those who behave in this way deserve to die, they not only do these things themselves but also praise all those who engage in such conduct.

Chapter 2

Judging Is Inexcusable. Therefore, you have no excuse, whoever you may be, when you pass judgment on others. For in judging others you condemn yourself, since you are doing the same things. We are all aware that God’s judgment on those who commit such deeds is just. How can you then suppose that you will escape the judgment of God for doing such things when you are condemning those who perform the same things?

How can you despise the riches of God’s kindness and forbearance and patience? How can you fail to realize that his kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? By your obstinate refusal to repent you are storing up retribution for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

For God will repay everyone in accordance with what his deeds deserve.[a] To those who seek after glory and honor and immortality by persevering in good works, he will grant eternal life. But for those who are slaves to selfish ambition and follow the path of wickedness and not of truth, wrath and fury will be their lot.

There will be affliction and distress for everyone who does evil—Jews first and then Gentiles. 10 However, glory, honor, and peace await everyone who does good—Jews first, and then Gentiles. 11 For God shows no partiality.[b]

Matthew 18:1-9

Instructions to the Disciples: The Charter of the Community[a]

Chapter 18

Become Like Little Children.[b] At that time, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus beckoned a child to come to him, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself and becomes like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Woe to the World because of Scandals.[c] “And whoever receives one such child in my name receives me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of scandals. Such things are bound to occur, but woe to the one through whom they come.

[d]“If your hand or your foot is an occasion of sin for you, cut it off and throw it away. It is preferable for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is preferable for you to enter into life with one eye than to have two eyes and be cast into the fires of Gehenna.
