Psalm 131[a]

Childlike Trust in God

A song of ascents. Of David.

Lord, my heart[b] is not proud,
    nor are my eyes raised too high.
I do not concern myself with great affairs
    or with things too sublime for me.
Rather, I have stilled and calmed my soul,[c]
    hushed it like a weaned child.
Like a weaned child held in its mother’s arms,
    so is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.[d]

Psalm 132[e]

The Divine Promises Made to David

A song of ascents.

Remember, O Lord, for David’s sake,
    all the difficulties he endured.[f]
[g]He swore an oath to the Lord
    and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
“I will not enter the house I live in
    or lie down on the bed where I sleep,
neither will I allow myself to fall asleep
    or even to close my eyes,
until I find a home for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
We heard of it in Ephrathah;
    we came upon it[h] in the fields of Jaar.
[i]Let us enter his dwelling place,
    let us worship at his footstool.
Arise, O Lord, and go up to your resting place,
    you and the Ark of your might.
Let your priests clothe themselves with righteousness,[j]
    and let your saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
    do not reject your anointed one.[k]
11 The Lord swore this oath[l] to David,
    an oath that he will not renounce:
“One of your own descendants
    I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
    and the statutes that I will teach them,
their sons will also rule
    on your throne from age to age.”[m]
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
    he has designated it for his home:
14 “This will be my resting place forever;
    here I will reside, for such is my wish.
15 [n]“I will bless it with abundant provisions
    and satisfy its poor with their fill of bread.
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation,
    and its saints will shout for joy.
17 “There I will raise up a horn for David[o]
    and prepare a lamp for my anointed one.
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,
    but on his head there will be a resplendent crown.”[p]

Psalm 133[q]

The Blessings of Brotherly Accord

A song of ascents. Of David.[r]

How wonderful and delightful it is
    for brothers to live together in unity.[s]
It is like fragrant ointment poured on the head,
    running down upon the beard,
running down upon the beard of Aaron,
    and flowing on the collar of his robes.[t]
It is like the dew of Hermon
    falling upon the mountains of Zion.[u]
For there the Lord has bestowed his blessing,
    life forevermore.

Psalm 140

Prayer for Deliverance from the Snares of the Wicked

For the director.[b] A psalm of David.

[c]Deliver me, O Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from those who are violent,
who plan evil schemes in their hearts[d]
    and stir up strife continually.
Their tongues[e] are as sharp as those of a serpent,
    while the venom of vipers is on their lips. Selah
Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
    protect me from those who are violent,
    who are determined to cause my downfall.
The arrogant[f] have set a hidden trap for me;
    they have spread out cords as a net,
    laying snares for me along the way. Selah
[g]I say to the Lord, “You are my God.
    Listen, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications.”
Lord, my God, my strong deliverer,
    you shield my head on the day of battle.
Do not grant the desires of the wicked, O Lord;
    do not permit their evil plots to succeed,
    or they will become proud. Selah
10 [h]Those who surround me raise up their heads;
    let them be overwhelmed by the malice they threaten.
11 May burning coals rain down on them;
    may they be flung down into the miry depths,
    never again to rise.[i]
12 Do not permit slanderers to find rest in the land;
    may evil hunt the violent to their death.
13 [j]I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor
    and upholds the cause of the needy.
14 Then the upright will give thanks to your name,
    and the righteous will dwell in your presence.

Psalm 142

Psalm 142[a]

Prayer in Time of Abandonment

A maskil[b] of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.

[c]I cry out to the Lord with my plea;
    I entreat the Lord to grant me mercy.
Before him I pour out my complaint
    and tell my troubles in his presence.
[d]No matter how faint my spirit is within me,
    you are there to guide my steps.
Along the path on which I travel[e]
    they have hidden a trap for me.
I look to my right,
    but there is no friend who knows me.
There is no refuge available to me;
    no one cares whether I live or perish.[f]
[g]I cry out to you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my refuge,
    my portion in the land of the living.”[h]
Listen to my plea for help,
    for I am in desperate straits.
Rescue me from those who seek to persecute me,
    for they are too strong for me.[i]
Set me free from my prison,[j]
    so that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will assemble around me
    because of your great generosity to me.

Jeremiah 26:1-16

Chapter 26

Jeremiah’s Arrest and Conviction.[a][b] At the beginning of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, the son of Josiah, this word came from the Lord to Jeremiah: Thus says the Lord: Stand in the court of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people from the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I order you to say, without omitting a single word. Perhaps they will listen and all of them will turn from their evil ways, causing me to relent in my determination to inflict disaster upon them because of their evil deeds.

Say to them: Thus says the Lord: If you refuse to listen to me and to live according to my law that I have set before you, and if you fail to heed the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you time and again even though you do not listen to them, then I will treat this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city an object of cursing for all the nations of the earth.

The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord. But when Jeremiah had finished saying everything that the Lord had commanded him to proclaim to all the people, then the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him and cried out, “You will be put to death for this. Why have you prophesied in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and that this city will be desolate and deserted?” And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10 When the high officials of Judah heard what was happening, they came up from the king’s palace to the house of the Lord and took their places there at the entry of the New Gate[c] of the house of the Lord. 11 The priests and the prophets then addressed the officials and all the people, saying, “This man deserves to be condemned to death because he has prophesied against this city all the things that you heard with your own ears.”

12 Then Jeremiah replied to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The Lord himself sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard. 13 Now, therefore, if you amend your ways and your actions and listen to the word of the Lord, your God, the Lord will relent in his determination to inflict the disaster that he has decreed for you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands. Do with me whatever seems right and proper to you. 15 However, you can be certain that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants. For truly the Lord sent me to speak all these things for you to hear.”

16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve to be sentenced to death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord, our God.”

Romans 11:1-12

Chapter 11

The Remnant of Israel.[a] I ask, then: Has God rejected his people? Of course not! I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. You surely must know what Scripture asserts in the passage about Elijah where he pleads with God against Israel: “Lord, they have killed your Prophets, they have torn down your altars. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.”

What was God’s response to him? “I have spared for myself seven thousand men who have not knelt before Baal.” So too, at the present time, there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

What follows, then? Israel was unable to attain what it was seeking. The elect attained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of lethargy:
    eyes that could not see
    and ears that could not hear,
down to this very day.”

And David says:

“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
    a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
    and their backs be bent forever.”

11 A Providential Misstep.[b] And so I ask: Have they stumbled so that they might fall? By no means! However, through their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, and this has stirred them to envy. 12 Now if their transgression results in riches for the world, and their loss results in riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full participation bring!

John 10:19-42

19 Once again, these words provoked a division among the Jews. 20 Many of them were saying, “He is possessed and out of his mind. Why should we listen to him?” 21 But others said, “No one possessed by a demon could speak like this. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”[a]

I and the Father Are One

22 Feast of the Dedication.[b] At that time, the feast of the Dedication was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple along the Portico of Solomon.[c] 24 The Jews gathered around him and asked, “How much longer will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus replied,

“I have told you,
but you do not believe.
The works that I do in my Father’s name
bear witness to me,
26 but you do not believe
because you are not my sheep.
27 “My sheep listen to my voice.
I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life,
and they will never perish.
No one will ever snatch them from my hand.
29 My Father who has given them to me
is greater than all,
and no one can snatch them
out of the Father’s hand.
30 I and the Father are one.”[d]

31 Once again, the Jews picked up rocks to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have performed in your presence many good works from my Father. For which of these works are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered, “We are not going to stone you for any good work you have done, but for blasphemy. Even though you are a man, you are claiming to be God.” 34 Jesus replied,

“Is it not written in your Law,[e]
‘I said: You are gods’?
35 If those to whom
the word of God was addressed
are called ‘gods’
—and Scripture cannot be set aside—
36 how can you say, ‘You blaspheme,’
to the one whom the Father has consecrated
and sent into the world
for saying, ‘I am the Son of God’?
37 “If I am not performing
the works of my Father,
then do not believe me.
38 However, if I am doing them,
then even if you do not believe me,
at least believe my works,
so that you may realize and understand
that the Father is in me
and I am in the Father.”

39 They again tried to seize him, but he escaped from their clutches.

40 The Testimony of John the Baptist.[f] He went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and he remained there. 41 Many people came to him, and they were saying, “John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And many there came to believe in him.
