  10. No wonder I am so angry! Watch how the children gather wood and the fathers build sacrificial fires. See how the women knead dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. And they pour out liquid offerings to their other idol gods!
  11. For death has crept in through our windows and has entered our mansions. It has killed off the flower of our youth: Children no longer play in the streets, and young men no longer gather in the squares.
  12. My home is gone, and no one is left to help me rebuild it. My children have been taken away, and I will never see them again.
  13. I will smash them against each other, even parents against children, says the Lord. I will not let my pity or mercy or compassion keep me from destroying them.’”

  16. For this is what the Lord says about the children born here in this city and about their mothers and fathers:
  17. Even their children go to worship at their pagan altars and Asherah poles, beneath every green tree and on every high hill.
  18. So let their children starve! Let them die by the sword! Let their wives become childless widows. Let their old men die in a plague, and let their young men be killed in battle!
  19. “‘For Israel has forsaken me and turned this valley into a place of wickedness. The people burn incense to foreign gods—idols never before acknowledged by this generation, by their ancestors, or by the kings of Judah. And they have filled this place with the blood of innocent children.
  20. “Why is this man Jehoiachin like a discarded, broken jar? Why are he and his children to be exiled to a foreign land?
  21. This is what the Lord says: ‘Let the record show that this man Jehoiachin was childless. He is a failure, for none of his children will succeed him on the throne of David to rule over Judah.’
  22. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away!
  23. “So do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel,” says the Lord. “For I will bring you home again from distant lands, and your children will return from their exile. Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet, and no one will terrorize them.
  24. Their children will prosper as they did long ago. I will establish them as a nation before me, and I will punish anyone who hurts them.
  25. Rachel’s Sadness Turns to Joy

    This is what the Lord says: “A cry is heard in Ramah— deep anguish and bitter weeping. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted— for her children are gone.”
