  154. The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
  155. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
  156. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
  157. For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
  158. By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”
  159. as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
  160. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.
  161. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.
  162. as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
  163. The Law and Sin

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
  164. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good.
  165. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
  166. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
  167. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.
  168. As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
  169. But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,
  170. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.
  171. As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
  172. as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
  173. And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
  174. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
  175. as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”
  176. do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.
  177. And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
  178. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
  179. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
  180. for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
  181. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean.

  186. And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”
  187. but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”
  188. Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
  189. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”
  190. so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
  191. Wisdom from the Spirit

Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.
  192. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—
  193. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”
  194. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
  195. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself.
  196. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.
  197. Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife.

  199. Principles for Marriage

Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”
  200. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am.
  201. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
  202. For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
  203. I think that in view of the present distress it is good for a person to remain as he is.
  204. If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin.
  205. Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
  206. For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned?
  207. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”
  208. but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.
  209. For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.
  210. Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,
  211. but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
  212. The Lord's Supper

But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.
  213. When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat.
  214. and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
  215. One Body with Many Members

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
  216. But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.
  217. As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
  218. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
  219. or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
  220. In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”
  221. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
  222. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
  223. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him.
  224. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
  225. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
  226. Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
  227. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.
  228. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
  229. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes.
  230. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
  231. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us,
  232. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
  233. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
  234. The Ministry of Reconciliation

Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
  235. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you.
  236. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
  237. For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.
  238. As it is written, “Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”
  239. The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

Now it is superfluous for me to write to you about the ministry for the saints,
  240. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
  241. For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
  242. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
  243. Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? It is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and all for your upbuilding, beloved.
  244. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
  245. Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
  246. The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
  247. Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
  248. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
  249. It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you,
  250. For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman.
  251. For it is written, “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.”
  252. But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
  253. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
  254. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
  255. from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
  256. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret.
  257. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
  258. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,
  259. as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
  260. for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
  261. which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,
  262. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write.
  263. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
  264. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
  265. for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
  266. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
  267. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.
  268. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
  269. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
  270. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
  271. Warning Against Apostasy

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
  272. For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit,
  273. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.
  274. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.
  275. so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.
  276. It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.
  277. In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.
  278. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.
  279. For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
  280. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
  281. But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
  282. For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place.
  283. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
  284. for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
  285. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
  286. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
  287. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”
  288. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
  289. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
  290. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
  291. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
  292. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.
  293. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
  294. but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
  295. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
  296. As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
  297. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
  298. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
  299. so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
  300. since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
  301. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.
  302. For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
  303. At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
  304. Warning Concerning Antichrists

Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.
  305. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
  306. Support and Opposition

Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are,
  307. It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.
  308. but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
  309. and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
  310. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.
  311. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb,
  312. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. It is what they deserve!”
  313. The Seventh Bowl

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”
  314. As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction.
  315. The Rider on a White Horse

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.
  316. And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
