麦基洗德的祭司体系

麦基洗德就是撒冷王,是至高 神的祭司。他在亚伯拉罕打败诸王回来的时候迎接他,并给他祝福。 亚伯拉罕也将自己所得来的一切,取十分之一给他。他头一个名字翻译出来是“公义的王”,他又名“撒冷王”,是和平王的意思。 他无父、无母、无族谱、无生之始、无命之终,是与 神的儿子相似,他永远作祭司。

你们想一想,这个人多么伟大啊!连先祖亚伯拉罕都拿战利品的十分之一给他。 那得祭司职分的利未子孙,奉命照例向百姓取十分之一,这百姓是自己的弟兄,虽是从亚伯拉罕亲身生的,还是照例取十分之一。 惟独麦基洗德那不与他们同族谱的,从亚伯拉罕收取了十分之一,并且给蒙应许的亚伯拉罕祝福。 向来位分大的给位分小的祝福,这是无可争议的。 在这事上,一方面,收取十分之一的都是必死的人;另一方面,收取十分之一的却是那位被证实是活着的。 我们可以说,那接受十分之一的利未也是藉着亚伯拉罕纳了十分之一, 10 因为麦基洗德迎接亚伯拉罕的时候,利未还在他先祖的身体里面。

11 那么,如果百姓藉着利未人的祭司职任能达到完全—因为百姓是在这职分下领受律法的—为什么还需要按照麦基洗德的体系另外兴起一位祭司,而不按照亚伦的体系呢? 12 既然祭司的职分已更改,律法也需要更改。 13 因为这些话所指的人本属别的支派,那支派里从来没有一人在祭坛前事奉的。 14 很明显地,我们的主是从犹大出来的;但关于这支派,摩西并没有提到祭司。

15 倘若有另一位像麦基洗德的祭司兴起来,我的话就更显而易见了。 16 他成为祭司,并不是照属肉身的条例,而是照无穷[a]生命的大能。 17 因为有给他作见证的说:

“你是照着麦基洗德的体系
永远为祭司。”

18 一方面,先前的诫命因软弱无能而废掉了, 19 (律法本来就不能成就什么);另一方面,一个更好的指望被引进来,靠这指望,我们就可以亲近 神。

20 再者,耶稣成为祭司,并不是没有 神的誓言;其他的祭司被指派时并没有这种誓言, 21 只有耶稣是起誓立的,因为那位立他的对他说:

“主起了誓,
绝不改变。
你是永远为祭司。”

22 既是起誓立的,耶稣也作了更美之约的中保。

23 一方面,那些成为祭司的数目本来多,是因为受死亡限制不能长久留住。 24 另一方面,这位既是永远留住的,他具有不可更换的祭司职任。 25 所以,凡靠着他进到 神面前的人,他都能拯救到底,因为他长远活着为他们祈求。

26 这样一位圣洁、无邪恶、无玷污、远离罪人、高过诸天的大祭司,对我们是最合适的; 27 他不像那些大祭司,每日必须先为自己的罪,后为百姓的罪献祭,因为他只一次将自己献上就把这事成全了。 28 律法所立的大祭司本是有弱点的人,但在律法以后, 神以起誓的话立了儿子为大祭司,成为完全,直到永远。

更新更美之约的大祭司

我们所讲的事,其中第一要紧的就是:我们有这样一位大祭司,他已经坐在天上至大者宝座的右边, 在圣所,就是在真帐幕里作仆役;这帐幕是主所支搭的,不是人所支搭的。 凡大祭司都是为献礼物和祭物设立的,所以这位大祭司也必须有所献上。 他若在地上,就不用作祭司,因为已经有照律法献礼物的祭司了。 他们所供奉的本是天上之事的样式和影像,正如摩西将要造帐幕的时候, 神警戒他,说:“要谨慎,一切都要照着在山上指示你的样式去做。” 如今耶稣已经得了更优越的事奉,正如他作更美之约的中保;这约原是凭更美之应许立的。

第一个约若没有瑕疵,就无须寻求第二个约了。 所以 神指责他们说:

“主说,看哪,日子将到,
我要与以色列
犹大家另立新的约;
不像我拉着他们祖宗的手
领他们出埃及地的时候,
与他们所立的约;
因为他们不恒心守我的约,
所以我也不理他们;这是主说的。
10 主又说:
那些日子以后,
我与以色列家所立的约是这样:
我要将我的律法放在他们的心思里,
写在他们的心上;
我要作他们的 神,
他们要作我的子民。
11 他们各人不用教导自己的乡亲和自己的弟兄,说:你要认识主;
因为从最小的到最大的,
他们都要认识我。
12 我要宽恕他们的不义,
绝不再记得他们的罪恶。”

13 既然 神提到“新的约”,那么第一个约就成为旧的了;而那渐旧渐衰的必然很快消逝了。

地上和天上的圣所

原来连第一个约都有敬拜的礼仪和属世界的圣幕。 因为那预备好了的帐幕,第一层叫圣所,里面有灯台、供桌和供饼。 第二层幔子后又有一层帐幕,叫至圣所, 有金香坛和四周包金的约柜,柜里有盛吗哪的金罐、亚伦那根发过芽的杖和两块约版; 柜上面有荣耀的基路伯罩着施恩座。有关这一切我现在不能一一细说。

这些物件既如此预备齐了,众祭司就不断地进第一层帐幕行拜 神的礼。 至于第二层帐幕,惟有大祭司一年一次独自进去,没有一次不带着血,为自己献上,也为百姓无意所犯的过错献上。 圣灵藉此指明,第一层帐幕仍存在的时候,进入至圣所的路还没有显示。 那第一层帐幕是现今时代的一个预表,表示所献的礼物和祭物都不能使敬拜的人在良心上得以完全。 10 这些事只不过是有关饮食和各种洁净的规矩,是属肉体的条例,它的功效是直到新次序的时期来到为止。

11 但现在基督已经来到,作了已实现的美事的大祭司,经过那更大更全备的帐幕,不是人手所造,也不是属于这世界的; 12 他不用山羊和牛犊的血,而是用自己的血,只一次进入至圣所就获得了永远的赎罪。 13 若山羊和公牛的血,以及母牛犊的灰,洒在不洁的人身上,尚且使人成圣,身体洁净, 14 何况基督的血,他藉着永远的灵把自己无瑕疵地献给 神,更能洗净我们[b]的良心,除去致死的行为,好事奉那位永生的 神。

15 为此,基督作了新约的中保;因为他的死,赎了人在第一个约之时所犯的罪过,使蒙召的人能得着所应许永远的产业。 16 凡有遗嘱,必须证实立遗嘱的人已经死了。 17 因为人死了,遗嘱才有效力;立遗嘱的人尚在,遗嘱就不能生效。 18 所以,第一个约也是用血立的。 19 因为摩西当日照着律法将各样诫命传给众百姓,就拿朱红色绒和牛膝草,把牛犊、山羊[c]的血和水洒在书上,又洒在众百姓身上, 20 说:“这血就是 神与你们立约的凭据。” 21 他又照样把血洒在帐幕和敬拜用的各样器皿上。 22 按着律法,几乎每样东西都是用血洁净的;没有流血,就没有赦罪。

基督献己为祭除掉了罪

23 这样,照着天上样式做的物件必须用这些礼仪去洁净,但那天上的一切,自然当用更美的祭物去洁净。 24 因为基督并没有进了人手所造的圣所—这不过是真圣所的影像—而是进到天上,如今为我们出现在 神面前。 25 他也无须多次将自己献上,像大祭司每年带着牛羊的血进入至圣所。 26 如果这样,他从创世以来就必须多次受苦了。但如今,他在今世的末期显现,仅一次把自己献为祭,好除掉罪。 27 按着命定,人人都有一死,死后且有审判。 28 同样,基督既然一次献上,担当了许多人的罪,将来要第二次显现,与罪无关,而是为了拯救热切等候他的人。

10 既然律法只不过是未来美好事物的影子,不是本体的真像,就不能藉着每年常献一样的祭物,使那些进前来的人完全。 若不然,献祭的事岂不早已停止了吗?因为敬拜的人仅只一次洁净,良心就不再觉得有罪了。 但是这些祭物使人每年都想起罪来, 因为公牛和山羊的血不能除罪。

所以,基督到世上来的时候,就说:

“祭物和礼物不是你所要的,
但你曾给我预备了身体。
燔祭和赎罪祭
是你不喜欢的。
那时我说:
看哪!我来了,我的事在经卷上已经记载了;
 神啊!我来为要照你的旨意行。”

以上说:“祭物和礼物,以及燔祭和赎罪祭,不是你所要的,也不是你喜欢的。”这都是按着律法献的。 他接着说:“看哪!我来了,为要照你的旨意行。”可见他除去在先的,为要立定在后的。 10 我们凭着这旨意,藉着耶稣基督,仅只一次献上他的身体就得以成圣。

11 所有的祭司天天站着事奉 神,屡次献上一样的祭物,这祭物永不能除罪。 12 但基督献了一次永远有效的赎罪祭,就坐在 神的右边, 13 从此等候他的仇敌成为他的脚凳。 14 因为他仅只一次献祭,就使那些得以成圣的人永远完全。

15 圣灵也对我们作证,因为他说过:

16 “主说:那些日子以后,
我与他们所立的约是这样的:
我要将我的律法放在他们的心上,
又要写在他们的心思里。”

17 并说:

“他们的罪恶和他们的过犯,
我绝不再记得。”

18 这些罪过既已蒙赦免,就不用再为罪献祭了。

劝勉和警告

19 所以,弟兄们,既然我们靠着耶稣的血得以坦然进入至圣所, 20 是藉着他给我们开了一条又新又活的路,从幔子经过,这幔子就是他的身体。 21 既然我们有一位伟大祭司治理 神的家, 22 那么,我们该用诚心和充足的信心,同已蒙洁净、无亏的良心,和清水洗净了的身体来亲近 神。 23 我们要坚守所宣认的指望,毫不动摇,因为应许我们的那位是信实的。 24 我们要彼此相顾,激发爱心,勉励行善; 25 不可停止聚会,好像那些停止惯了的人,倒要彼此劝勉,既然知道那日子临近,就更当如此。

26 如果我们领受真理的知识以后仍故意犯罪,就不再有赎罪的祭物, 27 惟有战战兢兢等候审判和那将吞灭众敌人的烈火了。 28 任何人干犯摩西的律法,凭两个或三个证人,尚且必须处死,不得宽赦, 29 更何况践踏 神儿子的人,他们将那使他成圣之约的血当作不洁净,又亵慢施恩的圣灵的人,你们想,他不该受更严厉的惩罚吗? 30 因为我们知道谁说:

“伸冤在我,
我必报应。”

又说:

“主要审判他的百姓。”

31 落在永生 神的手里真是可怕呀!

32 你们要追念往日;你们蒙了光照以后,忍受了许多痛苦的挣扎: 33 一面在众人面前公然被毁谤,遭患难;一面陪伴那些受这样苦难的人。 34 你们同情那些遭监禁的人,也欣然忍受你们的家业被人抢去,因为你们知道自己有更美好更长存的家业。 35 所以,不可丢弃你们无惧的心,存这样的心必得大赏赐。 36 你们必须忍耐,使你们行完了 神的旨意,可以获得所应许的。 37 因为

“还有一点点时候,
那要来的就来,必不迟延。
38 只是我的义人必因信得生;
他若退缩,我心就不喜欢他。”

39 我们却不是退缩以致沉沦的那等人,而是有信心以致得生命的人。

Melquisedeque é maior que Abraão

Esse Melquisedeque era rei de Salém e também sacerdote do Deus Altíssimo. Quando Abraão regressava para casa, depois de derrotar os reis, Melquisedeque foi ao seu encontro e o abençoou. Então Abraão separou a décima parte de tudo e a entregou a Melquisedeque, cujo nome significa “rei da justiça”, enquanto rei de Salém quer dizer “rei da paz”. Não há registro de seu pai nem de sua mãe, nem de nenhum de seus antepassados, nem do começo nem do fim de sua vida. Semelhantemente ao Filho de Deus, ele permanece sacerdote para sempre.

Considerem, portanto, a importância de Melquisedeque. Até mesmo Abraão, o patriarca, a reconheceu ao entregar a ele um décimo do que havia conquistado na batalha. A lei de Moisés exigia que os sacerdotes, os descendentes de Levi, recebessem o dízimo de seus irmãos israelitas, que também são descendentes de Abraão. Melquisedeque, porém, que não era descendente de Levi, recebeu o dízimo e, em seguida, abençoou Abraão, que já havia recebido as promessas. Sem dúvida, quem tem poder para abençoar é superior a quem é abençoado.

Os sacerdotes que recebem os dízimos são homens mortais. A respeito de Melquisedeque, no entanto, é dito que ele continua vivo. Além disso, pode-se dizer que os levitas, que recebem o dízimo, também o entregaram por meio de Abraão. 10 Embora Levi ainda não tivesse nascido, a semente da qual ele veio já estava no corpo de Abraão, seu antepassado, quando Melquisedeque se encontrou com ele.

11 Portanto, se o sacerdócio de Levi, sob o qual o povo recebeu a lei, pudesse ter alcançado a perfeição, por que seria necessário estabelecer outro sacerdócio, com um sacerdote segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque, em vez da ordem de Arão?

12 E, se o sacerdócio muda, também é preciso que a lei mude. 13 Pois o sacerdote ao qual estamos nos referindo pertence a outra tribo, cujos membros nunca serviram no altar como sacerdotes. 14 De fato, como todos sabem, nosso Senhor veio da tribo de Judá, e Moisés nunca mencionou que dessa tribo viriam sacerdotes.

Jesus é como Melquisedeque

15 Essa mudança se torna ainda mais clara com o surgimento de outro sacerdote, semelhante a Melquisedeque, 16 o qual se tornou sacerdote não por cumprir leis e exigências humanas, mas pelo poder de uma vida indestrutível. 17 Pois a respeito dele foi dito:

“Você é sacerdote para sempre,
segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque”.[a]

18 Desse modo, o antigo requisito, por ser fraco e inútil, foi cancelado. 19 Pois a lei nunca tornou perfeita coisa alguma. Agora, porém, temos certeza de uma esperança superior, pela qual nos aproximamos de Deus.

20 Esse novo sistema foi instituído com um juramento solene. Os outros se tornaram sacerdotes sem esse juramento, 21 mas a respeito dele houve um juramento, pois Deus lhe disse:

“O Senhor jurou e não voltará atrás:
‘Você é sacerdote para sempre’”.[b]

22 Por causa desse juramento, Jesus é aquele que garante uma aliança superior.

23 Além disso, havia muitos sacerdotes, pois a morte os impedia de continuar a desempenhar suas funções. 24 Mas, visto que ele vive para sempre, seu sacerdócio é permanente. 25 Portanto, ele é capaz de salvar de uma vez por todas[c] aqueles que se aproximam de Deus por meio dele. Ele vive sempre para interceder em favor deles.

26 É de um Sumo Sacerdote como ele que necessitamos, pois é santo, irrepreensível, sem nenhuma mancha de pecado, separado dos pecadores e colocado no lugar de mais alta honra no céu.[d] 27 Ele não precisa oferecer sacrifícios diariamente, ao contrário dos outros sumos sacerdotes, que os ofereciam primeiro por seus próprios pecados e depois pelos pecados do povo. Ele, porém, o fez de uma vez por todas quando ofereceu a si mesmo como sacrifício. 28 A lei nomeava sacerdotes limitados pela fraqueza humana. Mas, depois da lei, Deus nomeou com juramento seu Filho, que se tornou o Sumo Sacerdote perfeito para sempre.

O ministério superior de nosso Sumo Sacerdote

O mais importante é que temos um Sumo Sacerdote sentado no lugar de honra à direita do trono do Deus Majestoso no céu. Ele ministra ali no verdadeiro tabernáculo,[e] o santuário construído pelo Senhor, e não por mãos humanas.

E, visto que todo sumo sacerdote deve apresentar ofertas e sacrifícios, era necessário que esse Sumo Sacerdote também apresentasse uma oferta. Se ele estivesse aqui na terra, nem seria sacerdote, pois já existem sacerdotes que apresentam as ofertas exigidas pela lei. O serviço sacerdotal que eles realizam é apenas uma representação, uma sombra das coisas celestiais. Pois, quando Moisés se preparava para construir o tabernáculo, Deus o advertiu: “Cuide para que tudo seja feito de acordo com o modelo que eu lhe mostrei aqui no monte”.[f]

Agora, porém, Jesus, nosso Sumo Sacerdote, recebeu um ministério superior, pois ele é o mediador de uma aliança superior, baseada em promessas superiores. Se a primeira aliança fosse perfeita, não teria havido necessidade de outra para substituí-la. Mas, quando Deus viu que seu povo era culpado, disse:

“Está chegando o dia, diz o Senhor,
em que farei uma nova aliança
com o povo de Israel e de Judá.
Não será como a aliança que fiz
com seus antepassados,
quando os tomei pela mão
e os conduzi para fora da terra do Egito.
Não permaneceram fiéis à minha aliança,
por isso lhes dei as costas, diz o Senhor.
10 E esta é a nova aliança que farei com o povo de Israel
depois daqueles dias, diz o Senhor:
Porei minhas leis em sua mente
e as escreverei em seu coração.
Serei o seu Deus,
e eles serão o meu povo.
11 E não será necessário ensinarem a seus vizinhos
e a seus parentes, dizendo:
‘Você precisa conhecer o Senhor’.
Pois todos, desde o mais humilde até o mais importante,
me conhecerão.
12 E eu perdoarei sua maldade
e nunca mais me lembrarei de seus pecados”.[g]

13 Quando Deus fala de uma “nova aliança”, significa que tornou obsoleta a aliança anterior. E aquilo que se torna obsoleto e antiquado logo desaparece.

A adoração na antiga aliança

A primeira aliança tinha regras para a adoração, bem como um santuário terreno. Esse tabernáculo[h] era dividido em duas partes. Na primeira, ficava o candelabro e a mesa com os pães da presença. Essa parte era chamada lugar santo. Depois, havia uma cortina e, atrás dela, a segunda parte, chamada lugar santíssimo. Nessa parte ficava o altar de ouro para o incenso e a arca da aliança, inteiramente coberta de ouro. Dentro da arca havia um vaso de ouro contendo maná, a vara de Arão que floresceu e as tábuas de pedra da aliança. Sobre a arca ficavam os querubins da glória divina, cuja sombra se estendia por cima do lugar de expiação.[i] Mas agora não é o momento de explicar essas coisas em detalhes.

Quando tudo estava preparado, os sacerdotes entravam regularmente no lugar santo[j] para cumprir seus deveres sagrados. Mas apenas o sumo sacerdote, e só uma vez por ano, entrava no lugar santíssimo.[k] Ele sempre apresentava o sangue do sacrifício pelos próprios pecados e pelos pecados que o povo havia cometido por ignorância. Com essas regras, o Espírito Santo mostra que o caminho para o lugar santíssimo não havia sido aberto enquanto o primeiro tabernáculo[l] continuava em uso.

Essa é uma ilustração que aponta para o tempo presente, pois as ofertas e os sacrifícios que os sacerdotes apresentam não podem criar no adorador uma consciência totalmente limpa. 10 Tratava-se apenas de alimentos e bebidas e várias cerimônias de purificação; eram regras externas,[m] válidas apenas até que se estabelecesse um sistema melhor.

Cristo é o sacrifício perfeito

11 Cristo se tornou o Sumo Sacerdote de todos os benefícios agora presentes.[n] Ele entrou naquele tabernáculo maior e mais perfeito no céu, que não foi feito por mãos humanas nem faz parte deste mundo criado. 12 Com seu próprio sangue, e não com o sangue de bodes e bezerros, entrou no lugar santíssimo de uma vez por todas e garantiu redenção eterna.

13 Se, portanto, o sangue de bodes e bezerros e as cinzas de uma novilha purificavam o corpo de quem estava cerimonialmente impuro, 14 imaginem como o sangue de Cristo purificará nossa consciência das obras mortas, para que adoremos o Deus vivo. Pois, pelo poder do Espírito eterno, Cristo ofereceu a si mesmo a Deus como sacrifício perfeito. 15 Por isso ele é o mediador da nova aliança, para que todos que são chamados recebam a herança eterna que foi prometida. Porque Cristo morreu para libertá-los do castigo dos pecados que haviam cometido sob a primeira aliança.

16 Quando alguém deixa um testamento,[o] é necessário comprovar a morte daquele que o fez.[p] 17 O testamento só se torna válido após a morte da pessoa. Enquanto ela ainda estiver viva, o testamento não entra em vigor.

18 É por isso que até mesmo a primeira aliança foi sancionada com o sangue. 19 Depois de ler todos os mandamentos da lei a todo o povo, Moisés pegou o sangue de novilhos e de bodes,[q] e também água, e os aspergiu com ramos de hissopo e lã vermelha sobre o Livro da Lei e sobre todo o povo. 20 Em seguida, disse: “Este sangue confirma a aliança que Deus fez com vocês”.[r] 21 Da mesma forma, aspergiu com sangue o tabernáculo e todos os utensílios usados nos serviços sagrados. 22 De fato, segundo a lei, quase tudo era purificado com sangue, pois sem derramamento de sangue não há perdão.

23 Assim, as representações das coisas no céu tiveram de ser purificadas com o sangue de animais. As verdadeiras coisas celestiais, porém, tiveram de ser purificadas com sacrifícios muitos superiores.

24 Pois Cristo não entrou num santuário feito por mãos humanas, mera representação do santuário verdadeiro no céu. Ele entrou no próprio céu, a fim de agora se apresentar diante de Deus em nosso favor. 25 E ele não entrou no céu para oferecer a si mesmo repetidamente, como o sumo sacerdote aqui na terra, que todos os anos entra no lugar santíssimo com o sangue de um animal. 26 Se fosse assim, ele precisaria ter morrido muitas vezes, desde o princípio do mundo. Mas agora, no fim dos tempos,[s] ele apareceu uma vez por todas para remover o pecado mediante sua própria morte em sacrifício.

27 E, assim como cada pessoa está destinada a morrer uma só vez, e depois disso vem o julgamento, 28 também Cristo foi oferecido como sacrifício uma só vez para tirar os pecados de muitos. Ele voltará, não para tratar de nossos pecados, mas para trazer salvação a todos que o aguardam com grande expectativa.

O sacrifício definitivo de Cristo

10 A lei constitui apenas uma sombra, um vislumbre das coisas boas por vir, mas não as coisas boas em si mesmas. Os sacrifícios são repetidos todos os anos, mas nunca puderam purificar inteiramente aqueles que vêm adorar. Se tivessem esse poder, já não precisariam existir, pois os adoradores teriam sido purificados de uma vez por todas, e a consciência de seus pecados teria desaparecido.

Em vez disso, esses sacrifícios os lembravam de seus pecados todos os anos. Pois é impossível que o sangue de touros e bodes remova pecados. Por isso, quando Cristo[t] veio ao mundo, disse:

“Não quiseste sacrifícios nem ofertas,
contudo me deste um corpo para oferecer.
Não te agradaste de holocaustos,
nem de outras ofertas pelo pecado.
Então eu disse: ‘Aqui estou para fazer tua vontade, ó Deus,
como está escrito a meu respeito no livro’”.[u]

Primeiro Cristo disse: “Não quiseste sacrifícios nem ofertas, nem holocaustos, nem outras ofertas, nem te agradaste delas” (embora sejam exigidas pela lei). Então acrescentou: “Aqui estou para fazer tua vontade”. Ele cancela a primeira aliança a fim de estabelecer a segunda. 10 Pois a vontade de Deus era que fôssemos santificados pela oferta do corpo de Jesus Cristo, de uma vez por todas.

11 O sacerdote se apresenta todos os dias para realizar os serviços sagrados e oferece repetidamente os mesmos sacrifícios que nunca podem remover os pecados. 12 Nosso Sumo Sacerdote, porém, ofereceu a si mesmo como único sacrifício pelos pecados, válido para sempre. Então, sentou-se no lugar de honra à direita de Deus 13 e ali aguarda até que todos os seus inimigos sejam humilhados e postos debaixo de seus pés. 14 Porque, mediante essa única oferta, ele tornou perfeitos para sempre os que estão sendo santificados.

15 E o Espírito Santo também testemunha que isso é verdade, pois diz:

16 “Esta é a nova aliança que farei com meu povo
depois daqueles dias, diz o Senhor:
Porei minhas leis em seu coração
e as escreverei em sua mente”.[v]

17 E acrescenta:

“E nunca mais me lembrarei
de seus pecados e seus atos de desobediência”.[w]

18 Onde os pecados foram perdoados, já não há necessidade de oferecer mais sacrifícios.

Apelo à perseverança

19 Portanto, irmãos, por causa do sangue de Jesus, podemos entrar com toda confiança no lugar santíssimo, 20 Por sua morte,[x] Jesus abriu um caminho novo e vivo através da cortina que leva ao lugar santíssimo. 21 E, uma vez que temos um Sumo Sacerdote que governa sobre a casa de Deus, 22 entremos com coração sincero e plena confiança, pois nossa consciência culpada foi purificada, e nosso corpo, lavado com água pura.

23 Apeguemo-nos firmemente, sem vacilar, à esperança que professamos, porque Deus é fiel para cumprir sua promessa. 24 Pensemos em como motivar uns aos outros na prática do amor e das boas obras. 25 E não deixemos de nos reunir, como fazem alguns, mas encorajemo-nos mutuamente, sobretudo agora que o dia está próximo.

26 Se continuamos a pecar deliberadamente depois de ter recebido o conhecimento da verdade, já não há sacrifício que cubra esses pecados. 27 Há somente a assustadora expectativa do julgamento e do fogo intenso que consumirá os inimigos. 28 Pois quem se recusava a obedecer à lei de Moisés era morto sem misericórdia, com base no depoimento de duas ou três testemunhas. 29 Imaginem quão maior será o castigo para quem insultou o Filho de Deus, tratou como comum e profano o sangue da aliança que o santificou e menosprezou o Espírito Santo que concede graça. 30 Pois conhecemos aquele que disse:

“A vingança cabe a mim;
eu lhes darei o que merecem”.[y]

E também:

“O Senhor julgará o seu povo”.[z]

31 Que coisa terrível é cair nas mãos do Deus vivo.

32 Lembrem-se dos primeiros dias, quando foram iluminados, e de como permaneceram firmes apesar de muita luta e sofrimento. 33 Houve ocasiões em que foram expostos a insultos e espancamentos; em outras, ajudaram os que passavam pelas mesmas coisas. 34 Sofreram com os que foram presos e aceitaram com alegria quando lhes foi tirado tudo que possuíam. Sabiam que lhes esperavam coisas melhores, que durarão para sempre.

35 Portanto, não abram mão de sua firme confiança. Lembrem-se da grande recompensa que ela lhes traz. 36 Vocês precisam perseverar, a fim de que, depois de terem feito a vontade de Deus, recebam tudo que ele lhes prometeu.

37 “Pois em breve
virá aquele que está para vir;
não se atrasará.
38 Meu justo viverá pela fé;
se ele se afastar, porém,
não me agradarei dele.”[aa]

39 Mas não somos como aqueles que se afastam para sua própria destruição. Somos pessoas de fé cuja alma é preservada.

Melchizedek the Priest

This Melchizedek was king of Salem(A) and priest of God Most High.(B) He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,(C) and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy,(D) without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God,(E) he remains a priest forever.

Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch(F) Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!(G) Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people(H)—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed(I) him who had the promises.(J) And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.(K) One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10 because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek

11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people(L) established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come,(M) one in the order of Melchizedek,(N) not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. 13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe,(O) and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar.(P) 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah,(Q) and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”[a](R)

18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless(S) 19 (for the law made nothing perfect),(T) and a better hope(U) is introduced, by which we draw near to God.(V)

20 And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind:(W)
    ‘You are a priest forever.’”[b](X)

22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.(Y)

23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.(Z) 25 Therefore he is able to save(AA) completely[c] those who come to God(AB) through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.(AC)

26 Such a high priest(AD) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,(AE) exalted above the heavens.(AF) 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices(AG) day after day, first for his own sins,(AH) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all(AI) when he offered himself.(AJ) 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;(AK) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,(AL) who has been made perfect(AM) forever.

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest,(AN) who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,(AO) and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle(AP) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest(AQ) is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices,(AR) and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.(AS) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.(AT) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy(AU) and shadow(AV) of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned(AW) when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[d](AX) But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant(AY) of which he is mediator(AZ) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.(BA) But God found fault with the people and said[e]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant(BB)
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors(BC)
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
    and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant(BD) I will establish with the people of Israel
    after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
    and write them on their hearts.(BE)
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.(BF)
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,(BG)
    from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
    and will remember their sins no more.(BH)[f](BI)

13 By calling this covenant “new,”(BJ) he has made the first one obsolete;(BK) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(BL) A tabernacle(BM) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(BN) and the table(BO) with its consecrated bread;(BP) this was called the Holy Place.(BQ) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(BR) which had the golden altar of incense(BS) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(BT) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(BU) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(BV) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(BW) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(BX) overshadowing the atonement cover.(BY) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(BZ) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(CA) the inner room,(CB) and that only once a year,(CC) and never without blood,(CD) which he offered for himself(CE) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(CF) The Holy Spirit was showing(CG) by this that the way(CH) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(CI) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(CJ) were not able to clear the conscience(CK) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(CL) and drink(CM) and various ceremonial washings(CN)—external regulations(CO) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(CP) of the good things that are now already here,[g](CQ) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(CR) that is not made with human hands,(CS) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(CT) but he entered the Most Holy Place(CU) once for all(CV) by his own blood,(CW) thus obtaining[h] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(CX) and the ashes of a heifer(CY) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(CZ) offered himself(DA) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(DB) from acts that lead to death,[i](DC) so that we may serve the living God!(DD)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(DE) of a new covenant,(DF) that those who are called(DG) may receive the promised(DH) eternal inheritance(DI)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(DJ)

16 In the case of a will,[j] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(DK) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(DL) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(DM) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(DN) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[k](DO) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(DP) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(DQ)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(DR) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(DS) he entered heaven itself,(DT) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(DU) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(DV) every year with blood that is not his own.(DW) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(DX) But he has appeared(DY) once for all(DZ) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(EA) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(EB) and after that to face judgment,(EC) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(ED) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(EE) not to bear sin,(EF) but to bring salvation(EG) to those who are waiting for him.(EH)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(EI) of the good things(EJ) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(EK) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(EL) those who draw near to worship.(EM) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(EN) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(EO) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(EP) to take away sins.(EQ)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(ER) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
    but a body you prepared for me;(ES)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(ET)
    I have come to do your will, my God.’”[l](EU)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(EV)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(EW) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(EX) through the sacrifice of the body(EY) of Jesus Christ once for all.(EZ)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(FA) which can never take away sins.(FB) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(FC) he sat down at the right hand of God,(FD) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(FE) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(FF) forever those who are being made holy.(FG)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(FH) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
    after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
    and I will write them on their minds.”[m](FI)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[n](FJ)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(FK) to enter the Most Holy Place(FL) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(FM) opened for us through the curtain,(FN) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(FO) over the house of God,(FP) 22 let us draw near to God(FQ) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(FR) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(FS) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(FT) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(FU) we profess,(FV) for he who promised is faithful.(FW) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(FX) 25 not giving up meeting together,(FY) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(FZ)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(GA)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(GB) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(GC) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(GD) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(GE) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(GF) underfoot,(GG) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(GH) that sanctified them,(GI) and who has insulted the Spirit(GJ) of grace?(GK) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[o](GL) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[p](GM) 31 It is a dreadful thing(GN) to fall into the hands(GO) of the living God.(GP)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(GQ) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(GR) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(GS) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(GT) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(GU) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(GV) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(GW) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(GX) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(GY) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
    he who is coming(GZ) will come
    and will not delay.”[q](HA)

38 And,

“But my righteous[r] one will live by faith.(HB)
    And I take no pleasure
    in the one who shrinks back.”[s](HC)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:

21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

10 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
