The Shepherd Struck

The Coming Day of the Lord

14 Behold, ^(H)a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. ² For ^(I)I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and ^(J)the city shall be taken ^(K)and the houses plundered ^(L)and the women raped. ^(M)Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. ^3 (N)Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. ^4 (O)On that day his feet shall stand ^(P)on ^(Q)the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and ^(R)the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by ^(S)a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. ⁵ And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from ^(T)the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.^[a]

^6 (U)On that day ^(V)there shall be ^(W)no light, cold, or frost.^{[b] 7 (X)}And there shall be a unique^[c] day, ^(Y)which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but ^(Z)at evening time there shall be light.

^8 (AA)On that day ^(AB)living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to ^(AC)the eastern sea^[d] and half of them to ^(AD)the western sea.^{[e] (AE)}It shall continue in summer as in winter.

⁹ And ^(AF)the Lord will be king over all the earth. ^(AG)On that day the Lord will be ^(AH)one and ^(AI)his name one.

^10 (AJ)The whole land shall be turned into a plain from ^(AK)Geba to ^(AL)Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But ^(AM)Jerusalem shall remain aloft ^(AN)on its site from ^(AO)the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to ^(AP)the Corner Gate, and from ^(AQ)the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses. ¹¹ And it shall be inhabited, for ^(AR)there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction.^{[f] (AS)}Jerusalem shall dwell in security.

¹² And this shall be ^(AT)the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.

¹³ And ^(AU)on that day a great panic from the Lord shall fall on them, so that ^(AV)each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other. ¹⁴ Even ^(AW)Judah will fight at Jerusalem.^[g] And ^(AX)the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected, gold, silver, and garments in great abundance. ¹⁵ And ^(AY)a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.

¹⁶ Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem ^(AZ)shall go up year after year to worship ^(BA)the King, the Lord of hosts, and ^(BB)to keep ^(BC)the Feast of Booths. ¹⁷ And if ^(BD)any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship ^(BE)the King, the Lord of hosts, ^(BF)there will be no rain on them. ¹⁸ And if the family of Egypt does not go up and present themselves, then on them there shall be no rain;^[h] there shall be ^(BG)the plague with which the Lord afflicts the nations that do not go up ^(BH)to keep the Feast of Booths. ¹⁹ This shall be the punishment to Egypt and the punishment to all the nations that do not go up ^(BI)to keep the Feast of Booths.

²⁰ And ^(BJ)on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, ^(BK)“Holy to the Lord.” And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar. ²¹ And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be ^(BL)holy to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them. And ^(BM)there shall no longer be ^(BN)a trader^[i] in the house of the Lord of hosts ^(BO)on that day.

The Lord's Love for Israel

^2 (BP)“I have loved you,” says the Lord. ^(BQ)But you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau ^(BR)Jacob's brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet ^(BS)I have loved Jacob ³ but Esau I have hated. ^(BT)I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” ⁴ If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’” ^5 (BU)Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”

The Priests' Polluted Offerings

^6 (BV)“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am ^(BW)a father, where is my honor? And if I am ^(BX)a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. ^(BY)But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ ^7 (BZ)By offering polluted food upon my altar. ^(CA)But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that ^(CB)the Lord's table may be despised. ^8 (CC)When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. ⁹ And now ^(CD)entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, ^(CE)will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. ^10 (CF)Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, ^(CG)and I will not accept an offering from your hand. ¹¹ For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name ^(CH)will be^[k] great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name ^(CI)will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts. ¹² But you profane it when you say that ^(CJ)the Lord's table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food, may be despised. ¹³ But you say, ^(CK)‘What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts. ^(CL)You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord. ¹⁴ Cursed be the cheat who has ^(CM)a male in his flock, and ^(CN)vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For ^(CO)I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name ^(CP)will be feared among the nations.

The Lord Rebukes the Priests

2 “And now, ^(CQ)O priests, ^(CR)this command is for you. ^2 (CS)If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send ^(CT)the curse upon you and I will curse ^(CU)your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. ³ Behold, ^(CV)I will rebuke your offspring,^[l] and ^(CW)spread dung on your faces, the ^(CX)dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it.^{[m] 4} So shall you know that I have sent ^(CY)this command to you, that ^(CZ)my covenant with Levi may stand, says the Lord of hosts. ⁵ My covenant with him was one of life and ^(DA)peace, and I gave them to him. ^(DB)It was a covenant of fear, and he feared me. He stood in awe of my name. ^6 (DC)True instruction^[n] was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he ^(DD)turned many from iniquity. ⁷ For ^(DE)the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people^[o] should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. ⁸ But you have turned aside from the way. ^(DF)You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted ^(DG)the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts, ⁹ and so ^(DH)I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but ^(DI)show partiality in your instruction.”

Judah Profaned the Covenant

¹⁰ Have we not all ^(DJ)one Father? Has not ^(DK)one God created us? Why then are we ^(DL)faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? ¹¹ Judah has been ^(DM)faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For ^(DN)Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. ¹² May the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob any descendant^[p] of the man who does this, who ^(DO)brings an offering to the Lord of hosts!

¹³ And this second thing you do. ^(DP)You cover the Lord's altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. ^14 (DQ)But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the Lord ^(DR)was witness between you and the wife of your youth, ^(DS)to whom ^(DT)you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. ^15 (DU)Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union?^[q] And what was the one God^[r] seeking?^{[s] (DV)}Godly offspring. So guard yourselves^[t] in your spirit, and let none of you be ^(DW)faithless to the wife of your youth. ¹⁶ “For ^(DX)the man who does not love his wife but divorces her,^[u] says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers^[v] his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and ^(DY)do not be faithless.”

The Messenger of the Lord

^17 (DZ)You have wearied the Lord with your words. ^(EA)But you say, “How have we wearied him?” ^(EB)By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, ^(EC)“Where is the God of justice?”

3 ^(ED)“Behold, I send ^(EE)my messenger, and ^(EF)he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord ^(EG)whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and ^(EH)the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. ² But ^(EI)who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For ^(EJ)he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. ³ He will sit ^(EK)as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring ^(EL)offerings in righteousness to the Lord.^{[w] 4 (EM)}Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

⁵ “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be ^(EN)a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those ^(EO)who oppress the hired worker in his wages, ^(EP)the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

Robbing God

⁶ “For ^(EQ)I the Lord do not change; ^(ER)therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. ^7 (ES)From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. ^(ET)Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. ^(EU)But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ ⁸ Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. ^(EV)But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ ^(EW)In your tithes and contributions. ^9 (EX)You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. ^10 (EY)Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby ^(EZ)put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open ^(FA)the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. ¹¹ I will rebuke ^(FB)the devourer^[x] for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. ¹² Then ^(FC)all nations will call you blessed, for you will be ^(FD)a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.

^13 (FE)“Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. ^(FF)But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ ¹⁴ You have said, ^(FG)‘It is vain to serve God. ^(FH)What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? ¹⁵ And now we call ^(FI)the arrogant blessed. ^(FJ)Evildoers not only prosper but ^(FK)they put God to the test and they escape.’”

The Book of Remembrance

¹⁶ Then those who feared the Lord ^(FL)spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and ^(FM)a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. ¹⁷ “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, ^(FN)in the day when I make up ^(FO)my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. ¹⁸ Then once more you shall ^(FP)see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

The Great Day of the Lord

4 ^[y] “For behold, ^(FQ)the day is coming, ^(FR)burning like an oven, when ^(FS)all the arrogant and ^(FT)all evildoers ^(FU)will be stubble. The day that is coming ^(FV)shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. ² But for you ^(FW)who fear my name, ^(FX)the sun ^(FY)of righteousness shall rise ^(FZ)with healing in its wings. You shall go out ^(GA)leaping like calves from the stall. ³ And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, ^(GB)on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

^4 (GC)“Remember ^(GD)the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules^[z] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

^5 (GE)“Behold, I will send you ^(GF)Elijah the prophet ^(GG)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. ⁶ And he will ^(GH)turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and ^(GI)strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”^[aa]

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1 ^(GJ)The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, ^(GK)the son of David, ^(GL)the son of Abraham.

^2 (GM)Abraham was the father of Isaac, and ^(GN)Isaac the father of Jacob, and ^(GO)Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, ³ and ^(GP)Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,^{[ab] 4} and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, ⁵ and Salmon the father of Boaz by ^(GQ)Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, ⁶ and ^(GR)Jesse the father of David the king.

And ^(GS)David was the father of Solomon by ^(GT)the wife of Uriah, ⁷ and ^(GU)Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,^{[ac] 8} and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, ^(GV)and Joram the father of Uzziah, ⁹ and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, ¹⁰ and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,^[ad] and Amos the father of Josiah, ¹¹ and ^(GW)Josiah the father of ^(GX)Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

¹² And after the deportation to Babylon: ^(GY)Jechoniah was the father of ^(GZ)Shealtiel,^[ae] and ^(HA)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ¹³ and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, ¹⁴ and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, ¹⁵ and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, ¹⁶ and Jacob the father of ^(HB)Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to ^(HC)the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

¹⁸ Now the birth of ^(HD)Jesus Christ^[af] took place in this way. ^(HE)When his mother Mary had been betrothed^[ag] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child ^(HF)from the Holy Spirit. ¹⁹ And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling ^(HG)to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. ²⁰ But as he considered these things, behold, ^(HH)an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son, and ^(HI)you shall call his name Jesus, ^(HJ)for he will save his people from their sins.” ^22 (HK)All this took place ^(HL)to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

(which means, God ^(HO)with us). ²⁴ When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, ²⁵ but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And ^(HP)he called his name Jesus.

The Visit of the Wise Men

2 Now ^(HQ)after Jesus was born in ^(HR)Bethlehem of Judea ^(HS)in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men^[ah] from ^(HT)the east came to Jerusalem, ² saying, “Where is he who has been born ^(HU)king of the Jews? For we saw ^(HV)his star when it rose^[ai] and have come to ^(HW)worship him.” ³ When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; ⁴ and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where ^(HX)the Christ was to be born. ⁵ They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

⁷ Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. ⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” ⁹ After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. ¹⁰ When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. ¹¹ And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, ^(IA)they offered him gifts, ^(IB)gold and ^(IC)frankincense and ^(ID)myrrh. ¹² And ^(IE)being warned ^(IF)in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

¹³ Now when they had departed, behold, ^(IG)an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” ¹⁴ And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt ¹⁵ and remained there until the death of Herod. ^(IH)This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, ^(II)“Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Herod Kills the Children

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. ^17 (IJ)Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

The Return to Nazareth

¹⁹ But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, ²⁰ saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for ^(IM)those who sought the child's life are dead.” ²¹ And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. ²² But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and ^(IN)being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. ²³ And he went and lived in a city called ^(IO)Nazareth, ^(IP)so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3 ^(IQ)In those days ^(IR)John the Baptist came preaching in ^(IS)the wilderness of Judea, ^2 (IT)“Repent, for ^(IU)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^{[aj] 3} For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

⁴ Now John wore ^(IX)a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was ^(IY)locusts and ^(IZ)wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, ⁶ and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, ^(JA)confessing their sins.

⁷ But when he saw many of ^(JB)the Pharisees and ^(JC)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ^(JD)“You brood of ^(JE)vipers! Who warned you to flee from ^(JF)the wrath to come? ⁸ Bear fruit ^(JG)in keeping with repentance. ⁹ And do not presume to say to yourselves, ^(JH)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from ^(JI)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰ Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(JJ)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

^11 (JK)“I baptize you with water ^(JL)for repentance, but ^(JM)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you ^(JN)with the Holy Spirit and ^(JO)fire. ¹² His ^(JP)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and ^(JQ)gather his wheat into the barn, ^(JR)but the chaff he will burn with ^(JS)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

^13 (JT)Then Jesus came ^(JU)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. ^14 (JV)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” ¹⁵ But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. ¹⁶ And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, ^(JW)the heavens were opened to him,^[al] and he ^(JX)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; ¹⁷ and behold, ^(JY)a voice from heaven said, ^(JZ)“This is my beloved Son,^[am] with whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

4 ^(KA)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness ^(KB)to be tempted by the devil. ² And after fasting ^(KC)forty days and forty nights, he ^(KD)was hungry. ³ And ^(KE)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(KF)the Son of God, command ^(KG)these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴ But he answered, ^(KH)“It is written,

^5 (KJ)Then the devil took him to ^(KK)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple ⁶ and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

and

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again ^(KM)it is written, ^(KN)‘You shall not ^(KO)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ^8 (KP)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(KQ)Satan! For ^(KR)it is written,

¹¹ Then the devil left him, and behold, ^(KU)angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹² Now when he heard that ^(KV)John had been arrested, ^(KW)he withdrew into Galilee. ¹³ And leaving ^(KX)Nazareth he went and lived in ^(KY)Capernaum by ^(KZ)the sea, in the territory of ^(LA)Zebulun and Naphtali, ^14 (LB)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

^17 (LF)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ^(LG)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^[an]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

^18 (LH)While walking by ^(LI)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you ^(LJ)fishers of men.”^{[ao] 20} Immediately they left their nets and followed him. ²¹ And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. ²² Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

^23 (LK)And he went throughout all Galilee, ^(LL)teaching in their synagogues and ^(LM)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and ^(LN)healing every disease and every affliction among the people. ²⁴ So his fame spread throughout all ^(LO)Syria, and ^(LP)they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and ^(LQ)pains, ^(LR)those oppressed by demons, ^(LS)those having seizures, and ^(LT)paralytics, and he healed them. ^25 (LU)And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the ^(LV)Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount

5 Seeing the crowds, ^(LW)he went up on the mountain, and when he ^(LX)sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

² And ^(LY)he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

^3 (LZ)“Blessed are ^(MA)the poor in spirit, for ^(MB)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁴ “Blessed are ^(MC)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

⁵ “Blessed are the ^(MD)meek, for they ^(ME)shall inherit the earth.

⁶ “Blessed are those who hunger and ^(MF)thirst ^(MG)for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

⁷ “Blessed are ^(MH)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

⁸ “Blessed are ^(MI)the pure in heart, for ^(MJ)they shall see God.

⁹ “Blessed are ^(MK)the peacemakers, for ^(ML)they shall be called ^(MM)sons^[ap] of God.

^10 (MN)“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for ^(MO)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

^11 (MP)“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely ^(MQ)on my account. ^12 (MR)Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for ^(MS)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

¹³ “You are the salt of the earth, ^(MT)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

^14 (MU)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ^15 (MV)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. ¹⁶ In the same way, let your light shine before others, so ^(MW)that^[aq] they may see your good works and ^(MX)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

^17 (MY)“Do not think that I have come to abolish ^(MZ)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but ^(NA)to fulfill them. ¹⁸ For truly, I say to you, ^(NB)until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. ^19 (NC)Therefore whoever relaxes ^(ND)one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least ^(NE)in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great ^(NF)in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds ^(NG)that of the scribes and Pharisees, you ^(NH)will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

^21 (NI)“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ^(NJ)‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable ^(NK)to judgment.’ ²² But I say to you that ^(NL)everyone who is angry with his brother^[ar] will be liable ^(NM)to judgment; whoever insults^[as] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to ^(NN)the hell^[at] of fire. ^23 (NO)So if ^(NP)you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, ²⁴ leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. ^25 (NQ)Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. ²⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(NR)you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.^[au]

Lust

^27 (NS)“You have heard that it was said, ^(NT)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ²⁸ But I say to you that ^(NU)everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ^29 (NV)If your right eye ^(NW)causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into ^(NX)hell. ^30 (NY)And if your right hand ^(NZ)causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into ^(OA)hell.

Divorce

^31 (OB)“It was also said, ^(OC)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ ^32 (OD)But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and ^(OE)whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

³³ “Again ^(OF)you have heard that it was said to those of old, ^(OG)‘You shall not swear falsely, but ^(OH)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ ³⁴ But I say to you, ^(OI)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for ^(OJ)it is the throne of God, ³⁵ or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is ^(OK)the city of the great King. ³⁶ And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. ³⁷ Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; ^(OL)anything more than this comes from evil.^[av]

Retaliation

^38 (OM)“You have heard that it was said, ^(ON)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ ³⁹ But I say to you, ^(OO)Do not resist the one who is evil. But ^(OP)if anyone ^(OQ)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And ^(OR)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,^[aw] let him have your cloak as well. ⁴¹ And if anyone ^(OS)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. ^42 (OT)Give to the one who begs from you, and ^(OU)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

^43 (OV)“You have heard that it was said, ^(OW)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴ But I say to you, ^(OX)Love your enemies and ^(OY)pray for those who persecute you, ^45 (OZ)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and ^(PA)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ^46 (PB)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁷ And if you greet only your brothers,^[ax] what more are you doing than others? Do not even ^(PC)the Gentiles do the same? ^48 (PD)You therefore must be ^(PE)perfect, ^(PF)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

6 “Beware of ^(PG)practicing your righteousness before other people in order ^(PH)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

^2 (PI)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may ^(PJ)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have ^(PK)received their reward. ³ But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your giving may be in secret. ^(PL)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lord's Prayer

⁵ “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love ^(PM)to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. ^(PN)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But when you pray, ^(PO)go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. ^(PP)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

⁷ “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as ^(PQ)the Gentiles do, for ^(PR)they think that they will be heard ^(PS)for their many words. ⁸ Do not be like them, ^(PT)for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ^9 (PU)Pray then like this:

^14 (QG)For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, ^15 (QH)but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Fasting

¹⁶ “And ^(QI)when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. ^(QJ)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ¹⁷ But when you fast, ^(QK)anoint your head and wash your face, ¹⁸ that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. ^(QL)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

^19 (QM)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where ^(QN)moth and rust^[bc] destroy and where thieves ^(QO)break in and steal, ^20 (QP)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. ²¹ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

^22 (QQ)“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, ^23 (QR)but if ^(QS)your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

^24 (QT)“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^(QU)money.^[bd]

Do Not Be Anxious

^25 (QV)“Therefore I tell you, ^(QW)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? ^26 (QX)Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. ^(QY)Are you not of more value than they? ²⁷ And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his ^(QZ)span of life?^{[be] 28} And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, ²⁹ yet I tell you, ^(RA)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, ^(RB)O you of little faith? ³¹ Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ ³² For ^(RC)the Gentiles seek after all these things, and ^(RD)your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. ³³ But ^(RE)seek first ^(RF)the kingdom of God and his righteousness, ^(RG)and all these things will be added to you.
