Revelation 20:7-22:21

Satan Freed and Doomed

7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be (A)released from his prison, 8 and will come out to (B)deceive the nations which are at the (C)four corners of the earth, (D)Gog and Magog, to (E)gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the (F)sand of the [a]seashore. 9 And they (G)came up on the [b]broad plain of the earth and surrounded the (H)camp of the [c]saints and the (I)beloved city, and (J)fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And (K)the devil who (L)deceived them was thrown into the (M)lake of fire and [d]brimstone, where the (N)beast and the (O)false prophet are also; and they will be (P)tormented day and night forever and ever.

Judgment at the Throne of God

11 Then I saw a great white (Q)throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose [e]presence (R)earth and heaven fled, and (S)no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the (T)great and the small, standing before the throne, and [f](U)books were opened; and another [g]book was opened, which is (V)the book of life; and the dead (W)were judged from the things which were written in the [h]books, (X)according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and (Y)Death and Hades (Z)gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them (AA)according to their deeds. 14 Then (AB)Death and Hades were thrown into (AC)the lake of fire. This is the (AD)second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if [i]anyone’s name was not found written in (AE)the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The New Heaven and Earth

21 Then I saw (AF)a new heaven and a new earth; for (AG)the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. 2 And I saw (AH)the holy city, (AI)new Jerusalem, (AJ)coming down out of heaven from God, (AK)prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, (AL)the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will (AM)dwell among them, and they shall be His [j]people, and God Himself will be among them[k], 4 and He will (AN)wipe away every tear from their eyes; and (AO)there will no longer be any death; (AP)there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; (AQ)the first things have passed away.”

5 And (AR)He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am (AS)making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for (AT)these words are faithful and true.” 6 Then He said to me, “[l](AU)It is done. I am the (AV)Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. (AW)I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the (AX)water of life, without cost. 7 (AY)The one who overcomes will inherit these things, and (AZ)I will be his God and he will be My son. 8 (BA)But for the cowardly, and [m]unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and sexually immoral persons, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in (BB)the lake that burns with fire and [n]brimstone, which is the (BC)second death.”

9 (BD)Then one of the seven angels who had the (BE)seven bowls, [o]full of the (BF)seven last plagues, came and spoke with me, saying, “(BG)Come here, I will show you the (BH)bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

The New Jerusalem

10 And (BI)he carried me away [p](BJ)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (BK)the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having (BL)the glory of God. Her [q]brilliance was like a very valuable stone, like a (BM)stone of (BN)crystal-clear jasper. 12 [r]It had a great and high wall, [s](BO)with twelve (BP)gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on the gates, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. 14 And the wall of the city had (BQ)twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the (BR)twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 The one who spoke with me had a [t]gold measuring (BS)rod to measure the city, its (BT)gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the [u]rod, [v]twelve thousand stadia; its length, width, and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, [w]144 cubits, by (BU)human [x]measurements, which are also (BV)angelic measurements. 18 The material of the wall was (BW)jasper; and the city was (BX)pure gold, like [y]clear (BY)glass. 19 (BZ)The foundation stones of the city wall were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was (CA)jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, (CB)emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, (CC)sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve (CD)gates were twelve (CE)pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was (CF)pure gold, like transparent (CG)glass.

22 I saw (CH)no [z]temple in it, for the (CI)Lord God the Almighty and the (CJ)Lamb are its [aa]temple. 23 And the city (CK)has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for (CL)the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the (CM)Lamb. 24 (CN)The nations will walk by its light, and the (CO)kings of the earth [ab]will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for (CP)there will be no night there) (CQ)its gates (CR)will never be closed; 26 and (CS)they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and (CT)nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [ac]whose names are (CU)written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The River and the Tree of Life

22 And (CV)he showed me a (CW)river of the (CX)water of life, [ad]clear (CY)as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of [ae]the Lamb, 2 in the middle of (CZ)its street. (DA)On either side of the river was (DB)the tree of life, bearing twelve [af]kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 (DC)There will no longer be any curse; and (DD)the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will (DE)serve Him; 4 they will (DF)see His face, and His (DG)name will be on their (DH)foreheads. 5 And (DI)there will no longer be any night; and they [ag]will not have need (DJ)of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illuminate them; and they will (DK)reign forever and ever.

6 And (DL)he said to me, “(DM)These words are faithful and true”; and the Lord, the (DN)God of the spirits of the prophets, (DO)sent His angel to show His bond-servants the things which must soon take place.

7 “And behold, (DP)I am coming quickly. (DQ)Blessed is the one who [ah]keeps (DR)the words of the prophecy of this book.”

8 (DS)I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, (DT)I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9 And (DU)he *said to me, “[ai]Do not do that; I am a (DV)fellow servant of yours and of your brothers the prophets, and of those who [aj]keep the words of (DW)this book. Worship God!”

The Final Message

10 And he *said to me, “(DX)Do not seal up (DY)the words of the prophecy of this book, (DZ)for the time is near. 11 (EA)Let the one who does wrong still do wrong, and the one who is filthy still be filthy; and let the one who is righteous still practice righteousness, and the one who is holy still keep himself holy.”

12 “Behold, (EB)I am coming quickly, and My (EC)reward is with Me, (ED)to reward each one as his work [ak]deserves. 13 I am the (EE)Alpha and the Omega, (EF)the first and the last, (EG)the beginning and the end.”

14 Blessed are those who (EH)wash their robes, so that they will have the right to (EI)the tree of life, and may (EJ)enter the city by the (EK)gates. 15 (EL)Outside are the (EM)dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral persons, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

16 “(EN)I, Jesus, have sent (EO)My angel to testify to you of these things [al](EP)for the churches. I am (EQ)the root and the (ER)descendant of David, the bright (ES)morning star.”

17 The (ET)Spirit and the (EU)bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And (EV)let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires, take the (EW)water of life without cost.

18 I testify to everyone who hears (EX)the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone (EY)adds to them, God will add to him (EZ)the plagues that are written in (FA)this book; 19 and if anyone (FB)takes away from the (FC)words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from (FD)the tree of life and [am]from the holy city, (FE)which are written in this book.

20 He who (FF)testifies to these things says, “Yes, (FG)I am coming quickly.” Amen. (FH)Come, Lord Jesus.

21 (FI)The grace of the Lord Jesus be with [an]all. Amen.

The Judgment of Satan

7 When the thousand years are over,(A) Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations(B) in the four corners of the earth(C)—Gog and Magog(D)—and to gather them for battle.(E) In number they are like the sand on the seashore.(F) 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded(G) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.(H) But fire came down from heaven(I) and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them,(J) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,(K) where the beast(L) and the false prophet(M) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.(N)

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne(O) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,(P) and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,(Q) standing before the throne, and books were opened.(R) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.(S) The dead were judged(T) according to what they had done(U) as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades(V) gave up the dead(W) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.(X) 14 Then death(Y) and Hades(Z) were thrown into the lake of fire.(AA) The lake of fire is the second death.(AB) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life(AC) was thrown into the lake of fire.

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a](AD) for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,(AE) and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City,(AF) the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,(AG) prepared as a bride(AH) beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.(AI) They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.(AJ) 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.(AK) There will be no more death’[b](AL) or mourning or crying or pain,(AM) for the old order of things has passed away.”(AN)

5 He who was seated on the throne(AO) said, “I am making everything new!”(AP) Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”(AQ)

6 He said to me: “It is done.(AR) I am the Alpha and the Omega,(AS) the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost(AT) from the spring of the water of life.(AU) 7 Those who are victorious(AV) will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.(AW) 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars(AX)—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.(AY) This is the second death.”(AZ)

The New Jerusalem, the Bride of the Lamb

9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues(BA) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride,(BB) the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away(BC) in the Spirit(BD) to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.(BE) 11 It shone with the glory of God,(BF) and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper,(BG) clear as crystal.(BH) 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates,(BI) and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.(BJ) 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations,(BK) and on them were the names of the twelve apostles(BL) of the Lamb.

15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod(BM) of gold to measure the city, its gates(BN) and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia[c] in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human(BO) measurement, and it was 144 cubits[d] thick.[e] 18 The wall was made of jasper,(BP) and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.(BQ) 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone.(BR) The first foundation was jasper,(BS) the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby,(BT) the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[f] 21 The twelve gates(BU) were twelve pearls,(BV) each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.(BW)

22 I did not see a temple(BX) in the city, because the Lord God Almighty(BY) and the Lamb(BZ) are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God(CA) gives it light,(CB) and the Lamb(CC) is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.(CD) 25 On no day will its gates(CE) ever be shut,(CF) for there will be no night there.(CG) 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.(CH) 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful,(CI) but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.(CJ)

Eden Restored

22 Then the angel showed me the river(CK) of the water of life,(CL) as clear as crystal,(CM) flowing(CN) from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life,(CO) bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.(CP) 3 No longer will there be any curse.(CQ) The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.(CR) 4 They will see his face,(CS) and his name will be on their foreheads.(CT) 5 There will be no more night.(CU) They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.(CV) And they will reign for ever and ever.(CW)

John and the Angel

6 The angel said to me,(CX) “These words are trustworthy and true.(CY) The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets,(CZ) sent his angel(DA) to show his servants the things that must soon take place.”

7 “Look, I am coming soon!(DB) Blessed(DC) is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.”(DD)

8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.(DE) And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet(DF) of the angel who had been showing them to me. 9 But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll.(DG) Worship God!”(DH)

10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up(DI) the words of the prophecy of this scroll,(DJ) because the time is near.(DK) 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.”(DL)

Epilogue: Invitation and Warning

12 “Look, I am coming soon!(DM) My reward is with me,(DN) and I will give to each person according to what they have done.(DO) 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,(DP) the First and the Last,(DQ) the Beginning and the End.(DR)

14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes,(DS) that they may have the right to the tree of life(DT) and may go through the gates(DU) into the city.(DV) 15 Outside(DW) are the dogs,(DX) those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 “I, Jesus,(DY) have sent my angel(DZ) to give you[g] this testimony for the churches.(EA) I am the Root(EB) and the Offspring of David,(EC) and the bright Morning Star.”(ED)

17 The Spirit(EE) and the bride(EF) say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.(EG)

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll:(EH) If anyone adds anything to them,(EI) God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll.(EJ) 19 And if anyone takes words away(EK) from this scroll of prophecy,(EL) God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life(EM) and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.

20 He who testifies to these things(EN) says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”(EO)

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.(EP)

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people.(EQ) Amen.
