85 Lord, you were (B)favourable to your land;
you (C)restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You (D)forgave the iniquity of your people;
you (E)covered all their sin. Selah
3 You withdrew all your wrath;
you (F)turned from your hot anger.
4 (G)Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation towards us!
5 (H)Will you be angry with us for ever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6 Will you not (I)revive us again,
that your people may (J)rejoice in you?
7 Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
8 (K)Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
for he will (L)speak peace to his people, to his (M)saints;
but let them not (N)turn back to (O)folly.
9 Surely his (P)salvation is near to those who fear him,
that (Q)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (R)Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
(S)righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, (T)the Lord will give what is good,
and our land (U)will yield its increase.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before him
and make his footsteps a way.

14 O God, insolent men have (AT)risen up against me;
a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God (AU)merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 (AV)Turn to me and be gracious to me;
give your strength to (AW)your servant,
and save (AX)the son of your maidservant.

that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

2 the Lord (BD)loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
3 (BE)Glorious things of you are spoken,
O (BF)city of God. Selah
4 Among those who (BG)know me I mention (BH)Rahab and Babylon;
behold, Philistia and Tyre, with (BI)Cush[a]—
“This one was born there”, they say.
5 And of Zion it shall be said,
“This one and that one were born in her”;
for the Most High himself will (BJ)establish her.
6 The Lord records as he (BK)registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah
7 (BL)Singers and (BM)dancers alike say,
“All my (BN)springs are in you.”

88 O Lord, (BR)God of my salvation;
I (BS)cry out day and night before you.
2 Let my prayer come before you;
(BT)incline your ear to my cry!
3 For my soul is full of troubles,
and (BU)my life draws near to (BV)Sheol.
4 I am counted among those who (BW)go down to the pit;
I am a man who has no strength,
5 like one set loose among the dead,
like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom (BX)you remember no more,
for they are (BY)cut off from your hand.
6 You have put me in (BZ)the depths of the pit,
in the (CA)regions dark and (CB)deep.
7 Your wrath (CC)lies heavy upon me,
and you overwhelm me with (CD)all your waves. Selah
8 You have caused (CE)my companions to shun me;
you have made me (CF)a horror[c] to them.
I am (CG)shut in so that I cannot escape;
9 (CH)my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;

10 Do you work wonders for the dead?

11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
or your faithfulness in Abaddon?

14 O Lord, why (CP)do you cast my soul away?

15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,

2 For I said, (DA)“Steadfast love will be built up for ever;

3 You have said, “I have made (DD)a covenant with my (DE)chosen one;
I have (DF)sworn to David my servant:
4 ‘I will establish your (DG)offspring for ever,
and build your (DH)throne for all generations.’” Selah
5 Let (DI)the heavens praise your (DJ)wonders, O Lord,
your faithfulness in the assembly of (DK)the holy ones!
6 For (DL)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?

and awesome above all (DP)who are around him?
8 O Lord God of hosts,

with your faithfulness all round you?
9 You rule the raging of the sea;

13 You have a mighty arm;
strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14 (ED)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

15 Blessed are the people who know (EF)the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in (EG)the light of your face,
16 who exult in your (EH)name all the day
and in your righteousness are (EI)exalted.
17 For you are (EJ)the glory of their strength;
by your favour our (EK)horn is exalted.
18 For our (EL)shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to (EM)the Holy One of Israel.
19 (EN)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,[h] and said:
“I have (EO)granted help to one who is (EP)mighty;
I have exalted one (EQ)chosen from the people.
20 (ER)I have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have (ES)anointed him,
21 so that my (ET)hand shall be established with him;
my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
(EU)the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will (EV)crush his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
24 My (EW)faithfulness and my (EX)steadfast love shall be with him,
and in my name shall his (EY)horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on (EZ)the sea
and his right hand on (FA)the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my (FB)Father,
my God, and (FC)the Rock of my salvation.’
27 And I will make him the (FD)firstborn,
(FE)the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My steadfast love I will keep for him for ever,
and my (FF)covenant will stand firm[i] for him.
29 I will establish his (FG)offspring for ever
and his (FH)throne as (FI)the days of the heavens.
30 (FJ)If his children forsake my law
and do not walk according to my rules,[j]
31 if they violate my statutes
and do not keep my commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with (FK)the rod
and their iniquity with stripes,
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
or be false to my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my (FL)covenant
or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35 Once for all I have sworn (FM)by my holiness;
I will not (FN)lie to David.
36 His (FO)offspring shall endure for ever,
(FP)his (FQ)throne as long as (FR)the sun before me.
37 Like (FS)the moon it shall be established for ever,
(FT)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah
38 But now you have (FU)cast off and rejected;
you are full of wrath against your (FV)anointed.
39 You have (FW)renounced (FX)the covenant with your servant;
you have (FY)defiled his (FZ)crown in the dust.
40 You have (GA)breached all his walls;
you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (GB)All who pass by plunder him;
he has become (GC)the scorn of his neighbours.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendour to cease
and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (GD)the days of his youth;
you have (GE)covered him with shame. Selah
46 (GF)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself for ever?
How long will your wrath (GG)burn like fire?
47 (GH)Remember (GI)how short my (GJ)time is!
For what vanity you have created all the children of man!

49 Lord, where is your (GN)steadfast love of old,

Book Four
From Everlasting to Everlasting
A (GU)Prayer of Moses, the (GV)man of God.
90 Lord, you have been our (GW)dwelling place[l]
in all generations.
2 (GX)Before the (GY)mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
(GZ)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3 You return man to dust
and say, (HA)“Return, (HB)O children of man!”[m]
4 For (HC)a thousand years in your sight
are but as (HD)yesterday when it is past,
or as (HE)a watch in the night.
5 You (HF)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (HG)a dream,
like (HH)grass that is renewed in the morning:
6 in (HI)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it (HJ)fades and (HK)withers.
7 For we are brought to an end by your anger;
by your wrath we are dismayed.
8 You have (HL)set our iniquities before you,
our (HM)secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 For all our days pass away under your wrath;
we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[n] is but toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
and your wrath according to the fear of you?
12 (HN)So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (HO)Return, O Lord! (HP)How long?
Have (HQ)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (HR)morning with your steadfast love,
that we may (HS)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (HT)afflicted us,
and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (HU)work be shown to your servants,
and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (HV)favour[o] of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish (HW)the work of our hands upon us;
yes, establish the work of our hands!
My Refuge and My Fortress
91 He who dwells in (HX)the shelter of the Most High
will abide in (HY)the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say[p] to the Lord, “My (HZ)refuge and my (IA)fortress,
my God, in whom I (IB)trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from (IC)the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will (ID)cover you with his pinions,
and under his (IE)wings you will (IF)find refuge;
his (IG)faithfulness is (IH)a shield and buckler.
5 (II)You will not fear (IJ)the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
and (IK)see the recompense of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord your (IL)dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my (IM)refuge[q]—
10 (IN)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
(IO)no plague come near your tent.
11 (IP)For he will command his (IQ)angels concerning you
to (IR)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you (IS)strike your foot against a stone.

14 “Because he (IX)holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he (IY)knows my name.

How Great Are Your Works
A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.
92 (JD)It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to your name, (JE)O Most High;
2 to declare your (JF)steadfast love in (JG)the morning,
and your (JH)faithfulness by (JI)night,
3 to the music of (JJ)the lute and (JK)the harp,
to the melody of (JL)the lyre.
4 For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your (JM)work;
at (JN)the works of your hands I sing for joy.
5 How (JO)great are your works, O Lord!
Your (JP)thoughts are very (JQ)deep!
6 The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
7 that though (JR)the wicked sprout like grass
and all (JS)evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction for ever;
8 but you, O Lord, are (JT)on high for ever.
9 For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
for behold, your enemies shall perish;
all evildoers shall be (JU)scattered.
10 But you have exalted my (JV)horn like that of (JW)the wild ox;

the Lord is (KG)robed; he has (KH)put on strength as his belt.
(KI)Yes, the world is established; (KJ)it shall never be moved.
2 (KK)Your throne is established from of old;
(KL)you are from everlasting.
3 (KM)The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
4 Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
mightier than the waves of the sea,
(KN)the Lord (KO)on high is mighty!
5 Your (KP)decrees are very trustworthy;
(KQ)holiness befits your house,
O Lord, for evermore.
The Lord Will Not Forsake His People
94 O Lord, God of (KR)vengeance,

2 (KT)Rise up, O (KU)judge of the earth;
repay to the (KV)proud what they deserve!
3 O Lord, (KW)how long shall the wicked,
how long shall (KX)the wicked exult?
4 They pour out their (KY)arrogant words;
all (KZ)the evildoers boast.
5 They (LA)crush your people, O Lord,
and afflict your heritage.
6 They kill (LB)the widow and the sojourner,

Fools, when will you be wise?

He who (LH)teaches man knowledge—

12 (LK)Blessed is the man whom you (LL)discipline, O Lord,
and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him (LM)rest from (LN)days of trouble,
until (LO)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 (LP)For the Lord will not forsake his (LQ)people;
he will not abandon his (LR)heritage;
15 for (LS)justice will return to the righteous,
and all the upright in heart will (LT)follow it.
16 (LU)Who rises up for me against the wicked?
Who stands up for me against evildoers?
17 (LV)If the Lord had not been my help,
my soul would soon have lived in the land of (LW)silence.
18 When I thought, (LX)“My foot slips”,
your steadfast love, O Lord, (LY)held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can (LZ)wicked rulers be allied with you,
those who frame injustice by (MA)statute?
21 They (MB)band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn (MC)the innocent to death.[t]
22 But the Lord has become my (MD)stronghold,
and my God (ME)the rock of my (MF)refuge.
23 He will bring back on them (MG)their iniquity

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise
95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us (MI)make a joyful noise to (MJ)the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us (MK)come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us (ML)make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3 For the Lord is (MM)a great God,
and a great King (MN)above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5 The sea is his, for (MO)he made it,
and his hands formed (MP)the dry land.
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us (MQ)kneel before the Lord, our (MR)Maker!
7 For he is our (MS)God,
and we are the people of his (MT)pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.

Worship in the Splendour of Holiness
96 (NF)Oh sing to the Lord (NG)a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
(NH)tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvellous works among all the peoples!
4 For (NI)great is the Lord, and (NJ)greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above (NK)all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord (NL)made the heavens.
6 Splendour and majesty are before him;
(NM)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, O (NN)families of the peoples,
(NO)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
8 Ascribe to the Lord (NP)the glory due his name;
bring (NQ)an offering, and (NR)come into his courts!
9 Worship the Lord in (NS)the splendour of holiness;[u]
(NT)tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, (NU)“The Lord reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will (NV)judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let (NW)the heavens be glad, and let (NX)the earth rejoice;
let (NY)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let (NZ)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (OA)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes (OB)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.
The Lord Reigns
97 (OC)The Lord reigns, (OD)let the earth rejoice;
let the many (OE)coastlands be glad!
2 (OF)Clouds and thick darkness are all round him;
(OG)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 (OH)Fire goes before him
and burns up his adversaries all round.
4 His (OI)lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and (OJ)trembles.
5 The mountains (OK)melt like (OL)wax before the Lord,
before (OM)the Lord of all the earth.
6 (ON)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all (OO)the peoples see his glory.
7 All worshippers of images are (OP)put to shame,
who make their boast in (OQ)worthless idols;
(OR)worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and (OS)is glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
because of your judgements, O Lord.

you are exalted far above (OU)all gods.
10 O you who love the Lord, (OV)hate evil!
He (OW)preserves the lives of his (OX)saints;
he (OY)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord
A Psalm.
98 Oh sing to the Lord (PD)a new song,
for he has done (PE)marvellous things!
His (PF)right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The Lord has (PG)made known his salvation;
he has (PH)revealed his righteousness in (PI)the sight of the nations.
3 He has (PJ)remembered his (PK)steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All (PL)the ends of the earth have seen
(PM)the salvation of our God.
4 (PN)Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
(PO)break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the (PP)sound of melody!
6 With (PQ)trumpets and the sound of (PR)the horn
(PS)make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!
7 (PT)Let the sea roar, and (PU)all that fills it;
(PV)the world and those who dwell in it!

You have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.

(QZ)Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that (RA)the Lord, he is God!
It is he who (RB)made us, and (RC)we are his;[x]
we are his (RD)people, and (RE)the sheep of his pasture.

and turned from your fierce anger.(E)
4 Restore(F) us again, God our Savior,(G)
and put away your displeasure toward us.
5 Will you be angry with us forever?(H)
Will you prolong your anger through all generations?
6 Will you not revive(I) us again,
that your people may rejoice(J) in you?

I will put to silence;

85 Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.

5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
101 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.
2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.
5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.
6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.
7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.
8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.
102 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto thee.
2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.
3 For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.
4 My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.
5 By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.
6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.
7 I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.
8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me.

23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.
24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
