Revive Us Again

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of (A)the Sons of Korah.

85 Lord, you were (B)favourable to your land;
    you (C)restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You (D)forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you (E)covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you (F)turned from your hot anger.
(G)Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation towards us!
(H)Will you be angry with us for ever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not (I)revive us again,
    that your people may (J)rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.
(K)Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will (L)speak peace to his people, to his (M)saints;
    but let them not (N)turn back to (O)folly.
Surely his (P)salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that (Q)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (R)Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
    (S)righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, (T)the Lord will give what is good,
    and our land (U)will yield its increase.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way.

Great Is Your Steadfast Love

(W)A Prayer of David.

86 (X)Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
    for I am (Y)poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am (Z)godly;
    save your servant, who (AA)trusts in you—you are my God.
(AB)Be gracious to me, O Lord,
    for to you do I cry all the day.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
    for (AC)to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and (AD)forgiving,
    (AE)abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
(AF)Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
    listen to my plea for grace.
In (AG)the day of my trouble I call upon you,
    (AH)for you answer me.
There is (AI)none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    (AJ)nor are there any works like yours.
(AK)All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.
10 For (AL)you are great and (AM)do wondrous things;
    (AN)you alone are God.
11 (AO)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may (AP)walk in your truth;
    (AQ)unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name for ever.
13 (AR)For great is your steadfast love towards me;
    you have (AS)delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
14 O God, insolent men have (AT)risen up against me;
    a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
    and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God (AU)merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 (AV)Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to (AW)your servant,
    and save (AX)the son of your maidservant.
17 (AY)Show me a sign of your (AZ)favour,
    that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
    because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

A Psalm of (BA)the Sons of Korah. A Song.

87 On (BB)the holy mount (BC)stands the city he founded;
    the Lord (BD)loves the gates of Zion
    more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.
(BE)Glorious things of you are spoken,
    O (BF)city of God. Selah
Among those who (BG)know me I mention (BH)Rahab and Babylon;
    behold, Philistia and Tyre, with (BI)Cush[a]
    “This one was born there”, they say.
And of Zion it shall be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her”;
    for the Most High himself will (BJ)establish her.
The Lord records as he (BK)registers the peoples,
    “This one was born there.” Selah
(BL)Singers and (BM)dancers alike say,
    “All my (BN)springs are in you.”

I Cry Out Day and Night Before You

A Song. A Psalm of (BO)the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to (BP)Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil[b] of (BQ)Heman the Ezrahite.

88 O Lord, (BR)God of my salvation;
    I (BS)cry out day and night before you.
Let my prayer come before you;
    (BT)incline your ear to my cry!
For my soul is full of troubles,
    and (BU)my life draws near to (BV)Sheol.
I am counted among those who (BW)go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom (BX)you remember no more,
    for they are (BY)cut off from your hand.
You have put me in (BZ)the depths of the pit,
    in the (CA)regions dark and (CB)deep.
Your wrath (CC)lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with (CD)all your waves. Selah
You have caused (CE)my companions to shun me;
    you have made me (CF)a horror[c] to them.
I am (CG)shut in so that I cannot escape;
    (CH)my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;
    I (CI)spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you work wonders for the dead?
    (CJ)Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
11 Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
12 Are your (CK)wonders known in (CL)the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of (CM)forgetfulness?
13 But I, O Lord, cry (CN)to you;
    (CO)in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 O Lord, why (CP)do you cast my soul away?
    Why (CQ)do you hide your face from me?
15 Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.[d]
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your (CR)dreadful assaults destroy me.
17 They (CS)surround me like a flood (CT)all day long;
    they (CU)close in on me together.
18 You have caused (CV)my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    my companions have become darkness.[e]

I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

A Maskil[f] of (CW)Ethan the Ezrahite.

89 (CX)I will sing of (CY)the steadfast love of the Lord, for ever;
    with my mouth I will make known your (CZ)faithfulness to all generations.
For I said, (DA)“Steadfast love will be built up for ever;
    in the heavens (DB)you will establish your (DC)faithfulness.”
You have said, “I have made (DD)a covenant with my (DE)chosen one;
    I have (DF)sworn to David my servant:
‘I will establish your (DG)offspring for ever,
    and build your (DH)throne for all generations.’” Selah
Let (DI)the heavens praise your (DJ)wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of (DK)the holy ones!
For (DL)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    (DM)Who among the heavenly beings[g] is like the Lord,
a God greatly (DN)to be feared in the council of (DO)the holy ones,
    and awesome above all (DP)who are around him?
O Lord God of hosts,
    (DQ)who is mighty as you are, O (DR)Lord,
    with your faithfulness all round you?
You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you (DS)still them.
10 You (DT)crushed (DU)Rahab like a carcass;
    you (DV)scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11 (DW)The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    (DX)the world and all that is in it, you have (DY)founded them.
12 (DZ)The north and the south, you have created them;
    (EA)Tabor and (EB)Hermon (EC)joyously praise your name.
13 You have a mighty arm;
    strong is your hand, high your right hand.
14 (ED)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    (EE)steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
15 Blessed are the people who know (EF)the festal shout,
    who walk, O Lord, in (EG)the light of your face,
16 who exult in your (EH)name all the day
    and in your righteousness are (EI)exalted.
17 For you are (EJ)the glory of their strength;
    by your favour our (EK)horn is exalted.
18 For our (EL)shield belongs to the Lord,
    our king to (EM)the Holy One of Israel.
19 (EN)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,[h] and said:
    “I have (EO)granted help to one who is (EP)mighty;
    I have exalted one (EQ)chosen from the people.
20 (ER)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have (ES)anointed him,
21 so that my (ET)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
    (EU)the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will (EV)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
24 My (EW)faithfulness and my (EX)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his (EY)horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on (EZ)the sea
    and his right hand on (FA)the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my (FB)Father,
    my God, and (FC)the Rock of my salvation.’
27 And I will make him the (FD)firstborn,
    (FE)the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My steadfast love I will keep for him for ever,
    and my (FF)covenant will stand firm[i] for him.
29 I will establish his (FG)offspring for ever
    and his (FH)throne as (FI)the days of the heavens.
30 (FJ)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,[j]
31 if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with (FK)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my (FL)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35 Once for all I have sworn (FM)by my holiness;
    I will not (FN)lie to David.
36 His (FO)offspring shall endure for ever,
    (FP)his (FQ)throne as long as (FR)the sun before me.
37 Like (FS)the moon it shall be established for ever,
    (FT)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah
38 But now you have (FU)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your (FV)anointed.
39 You have (FW)renounced (FX)the covenant with your servant;
    you have (FY)defiled his (FZ)crown in the dust.
40 You have (GA)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (GB)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become (GC)the scorn of his neighbours.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendour to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (GD)the days of his youth;
    you have (GE)covered him with shame. Selah
46 (GF)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself for ever?
    How long will your wrath (GG)burn like fire?
47 (GH)Remember (GI)how short my (GJ)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 (GK)What man can live and never (GL)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of (GM)Sheol? Selah
49 Lord, where is your (GN)steadfast love of old,
    which by your (GO)faithfulness you swore to David?
50 (GP)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my (GQ)heart the insults[k] of all the many nations,
51 with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock (GR)the footsteps of your (GS)anointed.
52 (GT)Blessed be the Lord for ever!
Amen and Amen.

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (GU)Prayer of Moses, the (GV)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (GW)dwelling place[l]
    in all generations.
(GX)Before the (GY)mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    (GZ)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
You return man to dust
    and say, (HA)“Return, (HB)O children of man!”[m]
For (HC)a thousand years in your sight
    are but as (HD)yesterday when it is past,
    or as (HE)a watch in the night.
You (HF)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (HG)a dream,
    like (HH)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (HI)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it (HJ)fades and (HK)withers.
For we are brought to an end by your anger;
    by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have (HL)set our iniquities before you,
    our (HM)secret sins in the light of your presence.
For all our days pass away under your wrath;
    we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[n] is but toil and trouble;
    they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
    and your wrath according to the fear of you?
12 (HN)So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (HO)Return, O Lord! (HP)How long?
    Have (HQ)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (HR)morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may (HS)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (HT)afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (HU)work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (HV)favour[o] of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish (HW)the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!

My Refuge and My Fortress

91 He who dwells in (HX)the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in (HY)the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say[p] to the Lord, “My (HZ)refuge and my (IA)fortress,
    my God, in whom I (IB)trust.”
For he will deliver you from (IC)the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will (ID)cover you with his pinions,
    and under his (IE)wings you will (IF)find refuge;
    his (IG)faithfulness is (IH)a shield and buckler.
(II)You will not fear (IJ)the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
    and (IK)see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your (IL)dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my (IM)refuge[q]
10 (IN)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    (IO)no plague come near your tent.
11 (IP)For he will command his (IQ)angels concerning you
    to (IR)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you (IS)strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on (IT)the lion and the (IU)adder;
    the young lion and (IV)the serpent you will (IW)trample underfoot.
14 “Because he (IX)holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he (IY)knows my name.
15 When he (IZ)calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and (JA)honour him.
16 With (JB)long life I will satisfy him
    and (JC)show him my salvation.”

How Great Are Your Works

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.

92 (JD)It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
    to sing praises to your name, (JE)O Most High;
to declare your (JF)steadfast love in (JG)the morning,
    and your (JH)faithfulness by (JI)night,
to the music of (JJ)the lute and (JK)the harp,
    to the melody of (JL)the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your (JM)work;
    at (JN)the works of your hands I sing for joy.
How (JO)great are your works, O Lord!
    Your (JP)thoughts are very (JQ)deep!
The stupid man cannot know;
    the fool cannot understand this:
that though (JR)the wicked sprout like grass
    and all (JS)evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction for ever;
    but you, O Lord, are (JT)on high for ever.
For behold, your enemies, O Lord,
    for behold, your enemies shall perish;
    all evildoers shall be (JU)scattered.
10 But you have exalted my (JV)horn like that of (JW)the wild ox;
    you have (JX)poured over me[r] fresh oil.
11 My (JY)eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
    my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.
12 (JZ)The righteous flourish like the palm tree
    and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in the house of the Lord;
    they flourish in (KA)the courts of our God.
14 They still bear fruit in old age;
    they are ever full of sap and green,
15 (KB)to declare that the Lord is upright;
    he is my (KC)rock, and there is (KD)no unrighteousness in him.

The Lord Reigns

93 (KE)The Lord reigns; he is (KF)robed in majesty;
    the Lord is (KG)robed; he has (KH)put on strength as his belt.
(KI)Yes, the world is established; (KJ)it shall never be moved.
(KK)Your throne is established from of old;
    (KL)you are from everlasting.
(KM)The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
    the floods have lifted up their voice;
    the floods lift up their roaring.
Mightier than the thunders of many waters,
    mightier than the waves of the sea,
    (KN)the Lord (KO)on high is mighty!
Your (KP)decrees are very trustworthy;
    (KQ)holiness befits your house,
    O Lord, for evermore.

The Lord Will Not Forsake His People

94 O Lord, God of (KR)vengeance,
    O God of vengeance, (KS)shine forth!
(KT)Rise up, O (KU)judge of the earth;
    repay to the (KV)proud what they deserve!
O Lord, (KW)how long shall the wicked,
    how long shall (KX)the wicked exult?
They pour out their (KY)arrogant words;
    all (KZ)the evildoers boast.
They (LA)crush your people, O Lord,
    and afflict your heritage.
They kill (LB)the widow and the sojourner,
    and murder (LC)the fatherless;
(LD)and they say, “The Lord does not see;
    the God of Jacob does not perceive.”
(LE)Understand, O dullest of the people!
    Fools, when will you be wise?
(LF)He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
10 He who (LG)disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?
He who (LH)teaches man knowledge—
11     (LI)the Lord—knows the thoughts of man,
    that they are (LJ)but a breath.[s]
12 (LK)Blessed is the man whom you (LL)discipline, O Lord,
    and whom you teach out of your law,
13 to give him (LM)rest from (LN)days of trouble,
    until (LO)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 (LP)For the Lord will not forsake his (LQ)people;
    he will not abandon his (LR)heritage;
15 for (LS)justice will return to the righteous,
    and all the upright in heart will (LT)follow it.
16 (LU)Who rises up for me against the wicked?
    Who stands up for me against evildoers?
17 (LV)If the Lord had not been my help,
    my soul would soon have lived in the land of (LW)silence.
18 When I thought, (LX)“My foot slips”,
    your steadfast love, O Lord, (LY)held me up.
19 When the cares of my heart are many,
    your consolations cheer my soul.
20 Can (LZ)wicked rulers be allied with you,
    those who frame injustice by (MA)statute?
21 They (MB)band together against the life of the righteous
    and condemn (MC)the innocent to death.[t]
22 But the Lord has become my (MD)stronghold,
    and my God (ME)the rock of my (MF)refuge.
23 He will bring back on them (MG)their iniquity
    and (MH)wipe them out for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will wipe them out.

Let Us Sing Songs of Praise

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
    let us (MI)make a joyful noise to (MJ)the rock of our salvation!
Let us (MK)come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us (ML)make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is (MM)a great God,
    and a great King (MN)above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
    the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for (MO)he made it,
    and his hands formed (MP)the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us (MQ)kneel before the Lord, our (MR)Maker!
For he is our (MS)God,
    and we are the people of his (MT)pasture,
    and the sheep of his hand.
(MU)Today, if you (MV)hear his voice,
    (MW)do not harden your hearts, as at (MX)Meribah,
    as on the day at (MY)Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the (MZ)test
    and put me to the proof, though they had seen my (NA)work.
10 (NB)For forty years I loathed that generation
    and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,
    and they have not known (NC)my ways.”
11 Therefore I (ND)swore in my wrath,
    “They shall not enter (NE)my rest.”

Worship in the Splendour of Holiness

96 (NF)Oh sing to the Lord (NG)a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth!
Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
    (NH)tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvellous works among all the peoples!
For (NI)great is the Lord, and (NJ)greatly to be praised;
    he is to be feared above (NK)all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    but the Lord (NL)made the heavens.
Splendour and majesty are before him;
    (NM)strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the Lord, O (NN)families of the peoples,
    (NO)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord (NP)the glory due his name;
    bring (NQ)an offering, and (NR)come into his courts!
Worship the Lord in (NS)the splendour of holiness;[u]
    (NT)tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, (NU)“The Lord reigns!
    Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
    he will (NV)judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let (NW)the heavens be glad, and let (NX)the earth rejoice;
    let (NY)the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12     let (NZ)the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all (OA)the trees of the forest sing for joy
13     before the Lord, for he comes,
    for he comes (OB)to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness,
    and the peoples in his faithfulness.

The Lord Reigns

97 (OC)The Lord reigns, (OD)let the earth rejoice;
    let the many (OE)coastlands be glad!
(OF)Clouds and thick darkness are all round him;
    (OG)righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
(OH)Fire goes before him
    and burns up his adversaries all round.
His (OI)lightnings light up the world;
    the earth sees and (OJ)trembles.
The mountains (OK)melt like (OL)wax before the Lord,
    before (OM)the Lord of all the earth.
(ON)The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
    and all (OO)the peoples see his glory.
All worshippers of images are (OP)put to shame,
    who make their boast in (OQ)worthless idols;
    (OR)worship him, all you gods!
Zion hears and (OS)is glad,
    and the daughters of Judah rejoice,
    because of your judgements, O Lord.
For you, O Lord, are (OT)most high over all the earth;
    you are exalted far above (OU)all gods.
10 O you who love the Lord, (OV)hate evil!
    He (OW)preserves the lives of his (OX)saints;
    he (OY)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (OZ)Light (PA)is sown[v] for the righteous,
    and joy for the upright in heart.
12 (PB)Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
    and (PC)give thanks to his holy name!

Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord

A Psalm.

98 Oh sing to the Lord (PD)a new song,
    for he has done (PE)marvellous things!
His (PF)right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has (PG)made known his salvation;
    he has (PH)revealed his righteousness in (PI)the sight of the nations.
He has (PJ)remembered his (PK)steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All (PL)the ends of the earth have seen
    (PM)the salvation of our God.
(PN)Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    (PO)break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the (PP)sound of melody!
With (PQ)trumpets and the sound of (PR)the horn
    (PS)make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!
(PT)Let the sea roar, and (PU)all that fills it;
    (PV)the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers (PW)clap their hands;
    let (PX)the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
    to (PY)judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.

The Lord Our God Is Holy

99 (PZ)The Lord reigns; (QA)let the peoples tremble!
    He (QB)sits enthroned upon the cherubim; (QC)let the earth quake!
The Lord is (QD)great in Zion;
    he is (QE)exalted over all the peoples.
Let them praise your (QF)great and awesome name!
    (QG)Holy is he!
(QH)The King in his might (QI)loves justice.[w]
    You have established equity;
you have executed justice
    and righteousness in Jacob.
(QJ)Exalt the Lord our God;
    (QK)worship at his (QL)footstool!
    (QM)Holy is he!
(QN)Moses and Aaron were among his (QO)priests,
    Samuel also was among those who (QP)called upon his name.
    They (QQ)called to the Lord, and he answered them.
In (QR)the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;
    they (QS)kept his testimonies
    and the statute that he gave them.
O Lord our God, you answered them;
    you were (QT)a forgiving God to them,
    but (QU)an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Exalt the Lord our God,
    and worship at his (QV)holy mountain;
    for the Lord our God is holy!

His Steadfast Love Endures For Ever

A Psalm for (QW)giving thanks.

100 (QX)Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
    (QY)Serve the Lord with gladness!
    (QZ)Come into his presence with singing!
Know that (RA)the Lord, he is God!
    It is he who (RB)made us, and (RC)we are his;[x]
    we are his (RD)people, and (RE)the sheep of his pasture.
(RF)Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his (RG)courts with praise!
    Give thanks to him; (RH)bless his name!
(RI)For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures for ever,
    and his (RJ)faithfulness to all generations.

I Will Walk with Integrity

A Psalm of David.

101 I will sing of (RK)steadfast love and justice;
    to you, O Lord, I will make music.
I will (RL)ponder the way (RM)that is blameless.
    Oh when will you (RN)come to me?
I will (RO)walk with (RP)integrity of heart
    within my house;
I will not set before my eyes
    anything (RQ)that is worthless.
I hate the work of those who (RR)fall away;
    it shall not cling to me.
(RS)A perverse heart shall be far from me;
    I will (RT)know nothing of evil.
Whoever slanders his neighbour (RU)secretly
    I will (RV)destroy.
Whoever has a (RW)haughty look and an (RX)arrogant heart
    I will not endure.
I will look with favour on the faithful in the land,
    that they may dwell with me;
he who walks in (RY)the way that is blameless
    shall minister to me.
No one who (RZ)practises deceit
    shall dwell in my house;
no one who utters lies
    shall (SA)continue before my eyes.
(SB)Morning by morning I will destroy
    all the wicked in the land,
(SC)cutting off all (SD)the evildoers
    from (SE)the city of the Lord.

Psalm 85[a]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

You, Lord, showed favor to your land;
    you restored the fortunes(A) of Jacob.
You forgave(B) the iniquity(C) of your people
    and covered all their sins.[b]
You set aside all your wrath(D)
    and turned from your fierce anger.(E)

Restore(F) us again, God our Savior,(G)
    and put away your displeasure toward us.
Will you be angry with us forever?(H)
    Will you prolong your anger through all generations?
Will you not revive(I) us again,
    that your people may rejoice(J) in you?
Show us your unfailing love,(K) Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.(L)

I will listen to what God the Lord says;
    he promises peace(M) to his people, his faithful servants—
    but let them not turn to folly.(N)
Surely his salvation(O) is near those who fear him,
    that his glory(P) may dwell in our land.

10 Love and faithfulness(Q) meet together;
    righteousness(R) and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
    and righteousness(S) looks down from heaven.
12 The Lord will indeed give what is good,(T)
    and our land will yield(U) its harvest.
13 Righteousness goes before him
    and prepares the way for his steps.

Psalm 86

A prayer of David.

Hear me, Lord, and answer(V) me,
    for I am poor and needy.
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
    save your servant who trusts in you.(W)
You are my God; have mercy(X) on me, Lord,
    for I call(Y) to you all day long.
Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
    for I put my trust(Z) in you.

You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
    abounding in love(AA) to all who call to you.
Hear my prayer, Lord;
    listen to my cry(AB) for mercy.
When I am in distress,(AC) I call(AD) to you,
    because you answer(AE) me.

Among the gods(AF) there is none like you,(AG) Lord;
    no deeds can compare with yours.
All the nations you have made
    will come(AH) and worship(AI) before you, Lord;
    they will bring glory(AJ) to your name.
10 For you are great(AK) and do marvelous deeds;(AL)
    you alone(AM) are God.

11 Teach me your way,(AN) Lord,
    that I may rely on your faithfulness;(AO)
give me an undivided(AP) heart,
    that I may fear(AQ) your name.
12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;(AR)
    I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your love toward me;
    you have delivered me(AS) from the depths,
    from the realm of the dead.(AT)

14 Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;
    ruthless people are trying to kill me—
    they have no regard for you.(AU)

    slow to anger,(AW) abounding(AX) in love and faithfulness.(AY)

Psalm 87

Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm. A song.

He has founded his city on the holy mountain.(BE)
The Lord loves the gates of Zion(BF)
    more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.

Glorious things are said of you,
    city of God:[c](BG)
“I will record Rahab[d](BH) and Babylon
    among those who acknowledge me—
Philistia(BI) too, and Tyre(BJ), along with Cush[e]
    and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”[f](BK)
Indeed, of Zion it will be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her,
    and the Most High himself will establish her.”
The Lord will write in the register(BL) of the peoples:
    “This one was born in Zion.”

As they make music(BM) they will sing,
    “All my fountains(BN) are in you.”

Psalm 88[g]

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth.[h] A maskil[i] of Heman the Ezrahite.

Lord, you are the God who saves me;(BO)
    day and night I cry out(BP) to you.
May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.

I am overwhelmed with troubles(BQ)
    and my life draws near to death.(BR)
I am counted among those who go down to the pit;(BS)
    I am like one without strength.(BT)
I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off(BU) from your care.

You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.(BV)
Your wrath(BW) lies heavily on me;
    you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.[j](BX)
You have taken from me my closest friends(BY)
    and have made me repulsive to them.
I am confined(BZ) and cannot escape;(CA)
    my eyes(CB) are dim with grief.

I call(CC) to you, Lord, every day;
    I spread out my hands(CD) to you.
10 Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?(CE)
11 Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness(CF) in Destruction[k]?
12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

13 But I cry to you for help,(CG) Lord;
    in the morning(CH) my prayer comes before you.(CI)
14 Why, Lord, do you reject(CJ) me
    and hide your face(CK) from me?

15 From my youth(CL) I have suffered(CM) and been close to death;
    I have borne your terrors(CN) and am in despair.(CO)
16 Your wrath(CP) has swept over me;
    your terrors(CQ) have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood;(CR)
    they have completely engulfed me.
18 You have taken from me friend(CS) and neighbor—
    darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 89[l]

A maskil[m] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

I will sing(CT) of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known(CU)
    through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.(CV)
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”[n](CW)

The heavens(CX) praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly(CY) of the holy ones.
For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?(CZ)
In the council(DA) of the holy ones(DB) God is greatly feared;
    he is more awesome than all who surround him.(DC)
Who is like you,(DD) Lord God Almighty?(DE)
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging sea;
    when its waves mount up, you still them.(DF)
10 You crushed Rahab(DG) like one of the slain;
    with your strong arm you scattered(DH) your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours,(DI) and yours also the earth;(DJ)
    you founded the world and all that is in it.(DK)
12 You created the north and the south;
    Tabor(DL) and Hermon(DM) sing for joy(DN) at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
    your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.(DO)

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;(DP)
    love and faithfulness go before you.(DQ)
15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
    who walk(DR) in the light(DS) of your presence, Lord.
16 They rejoice in your name(DT) all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.
17 For you are their glory and strength,(DU)
    and by your favor you exalt our horn.[o](DV)
18 Indeed, our shield[p](DW) belongs to the Lord,
    our king(DX) to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Once you spoke in a vision,
    to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
    I have raised up a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David(DY) my servant;(DZ)
    with my sacred oil(EA) I have anointed(EB) him.
21 My hand will sustain him;
    surely my arm will strengthen him.(EC)
22 The enemy will not get the better of him;(ED)
    the wicked will not oppress(EE) him.
23 I will crush his foes before him(EF)
    and strike down his adversaries.(EG)
24 My faithful love will be with him,(EH)
    and through my name his horn[q] will be exalted.
25 I will set his hand over the sea,
    his right hand over the rivers.(EI)
26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,(EJ)
    my God, the Rock(EK) my Savior.’(EL)
27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,(EM)
    the most exalted(EN) of the kings(EO) of the earth.
28 I will maintain my love to him forever,
    and my covenant with him will never fail.(EP)
29 I will establish his line forever,
    his throne as long as the heavens endure.(EQ)

30 “If his sons forsake my law
    and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod,
    their iniquity with flogging;(ER)
33 but I will not take my love from him,(ES)
    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant
    or alter what my lips have uttered.(ET)
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
    and I will not lie to David—
36 that his line will continue forever
    and his throne endure before me like the sun;(EU)
37 it will be established forever like the moon,
    the faithful witness in the sky.”(EV)

38 But you have rejected,(EW) you have spurned,
    you have been very angry with your anointed one.
39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
    and have defiled his crown in the dust.(EX)
40 You have broken through all his walls(EY)
    and reduced his strongholds(EZ) to ruins.
41 All who pass by have plundered(FA) him;
    he has become the scorn of his neighbors.(FB)
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.(FC)
43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword
    and have not supported him in battle.(FD)
44 You have put an end to his splendor
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short(FE) the days of his youth;
    you have covered him with a mantle of shame.(FF)

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath burn like fire?(FG)
47 Remember how fleeting is my life.(FH)
    For what futility you have created all humanity!
48 Who can live and not see death,
    or who can escape the power of the grave?(FI)
49 Lord, where is your former great love,
    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has[r] been mocked,(FJ)
    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
    with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.(FK)

52 Praise be to the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.(FL)

BOOK IV

Psalms 90–106

Psalm 90

A prayer of Moses the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place(FM)
    throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born(FN)
    or you brought forth the whole world,
    from everlasting to everlasting(FO) you are God.(FP)

You turn people back to dust,
    saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(FQ)
A thousand years in your sight
    are like a day that has just gone by,
    or like a watch in the night.(FR)
Yet you sweep people away(FS) in the sleep of death—
    they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
    but by evening it is dry and withered.(FT)

We are consumed by your anger
    and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
    our secret sins(FU) in the light of your presence.(FV)
All our days pass away under your wrath;
    we finish our years with a moan.(FW)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(FX)
    or eighty,(FY) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(FZ)
    for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(GA)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
    Your wrath(GB) is as great as the fear that is your due.(GC)
12 Teach us to number our days,(GD)
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(GE)

13 Relent, Lord! How long(GF) will it be?
    Have compassion on your servants.(GG)
14 Satisfy(GH) us in the morning with your unfailing love,(GI)
    that we may sing for joy(GJ) and be glad all our days.(GK)
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
    your splendor to their children.(GL)

17 May the favor[s] of the Lord our God rest on us;
    establish the work of our hands for us—
    yes, establish the work of our hands.(GM)

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter(GN) of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow(GO) of the Almighty.[t]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge(GP) and my fortress,(GQ)
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare(GR)
    and from the deadly pestilence.(GS)
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;(GT)
    his faithfulness will be your shield(GU) and rampart.
You will not fear(GV) the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.(GW)

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm(GX) will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels(GY) concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;(GZ)
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.(HA)
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.(HB)

14 “Because he[u] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.(HC)
16 With long life(HD) I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.(HE)

Psalm 92[v]

A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day.

It is good to praise the Lord
    and make music(HF) to your name,(HG) O Most High,(HH)
proclaiming your love in the morning(HI)
    and your faithfulness at night,
to the music of the ten-stringed lyre(HJ)
    and the melody of the harp.(HK)

For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;
    I sing for joy(HL) at what your hands have done.(HM)
How great are your works,(HN) Lord,
    how profound your thoughts!(HO)
Senseless people(HP) do not know,
    fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
    they will be destroyed forever.(HQ)

But you, Lord, are forever exalted.

For surely your enemies(HR), Lord,
    surely your enemies will perish;
    all evildoers will be scattered.(HS)
10 You have exalted my horn[w](HT) like that of a wild ox;(HU)
    fine oils(HV) have been poured on me.
11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries;
    my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes.(HW)

12 The righteous will flourish(HX) like a palm tree,
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;(HY)
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.(HZ)
14 They will still bear fruit(IA) in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.(IB)

Psalm 93

The Lord reigns,(IC) he is robed in majesty;(ID)
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;(IE)
    indeed, the world is established,(IF) firm and secure.(IG)
Your throne was established(IH) long ago;
    you are from all eternity.(II)

The seas(IJ) have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;(IK)
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.(IL)
Mightier than the thunder(IM) of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers(IN) of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.(IO)

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness(IP) adorns your house(IQ)
    for endless days.

Psalm 94

The Lord is a God who avenges.(IR)
    O God who avenges, shine forth.(IS)
Rise up,(IT) Judge(IU) of the earth;
    pay back(IV) to the proud what they deserve.
How long, Lord, will the wicked,
    how long will the wicked be jubilant?(IW)

They pour out arrogant(IX) words;
    all the evildoers are full of boasting.(IY)
They crush your people,(IZ) Lord;
    they oppress your inheritance.(JA)
They slay the widow(JB) and the foreigner;
    they murder the fatherless.(JC)
They say, “The Lord does not see;(JD)
    the God of Jacob(JE) takes no notice.”

Take notice, you senseless ones(JF) among the people;
    you fools, when will you become wise?
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
    Does he who formed the eye not see?(JG)
10 Does he who disciplines(JH) nations not punish?
    Does he who teaches(JI) mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans;(JJ)
    he knows that they are futile.(JK)

12 Blessed is the one you discipline,(JL) Lord,
    the one you teach(JM) from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,(JN)
    till a pit(JO) is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people;(JP)
    he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,(JQ)
    and all the upright in heart(JR) will follow it.

16 Who will rise up(JS) for me against the wicked?
    Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?(JT)
17 Unless the Lord had given me help,(JU)
    I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.(JV)
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,(JW)
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety(JX) was great within me,
    your consolation(JY) brought me joy.

20 Can a corrupt throne(JZ) be allied with you—
    a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?(KA)
21 The wicked band together(KB) against the righteous
    and condemn the innocent(KC) to death.(KD)
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
    and my God the rock(KE) in whom I take refuge.(KF)
23 He will repay(KG) them for their sins
    and destroy(KH) them for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

Psalm 95

Come,(KI) let us sing for joy(KJ) to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud(KK) to the Rock(KL) of our salvation.
Let us come before him(KM) with thanksgiving(KN)
    and extol him with music(KO) and song.

For the Lord is the great God,(KP)
    the great King(KQ) above all gods.(KR)
In his hand are the depths of the earth,(KS)
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.(KT)

Come, let us bow down(KU) in worship,(KV)
    let us kneel(KW) before the Lord our Maker;(KX)
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,(KY)
    the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts(KZ) as you did at Meribah,[x](LA)
    as you did that day at Massah[y] in the wilderness,(LB)
where your ancestors tested(LC) me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years(LD) I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,(LE)
    and they have not known my ways.’(LF)
11 So I declared on oath(LG) in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”(LH)

Psalm 96(LI)

Sing to the Lord(LJ) a new song;(LK)
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;(LL)
    proclaim his salvation(LM) day after day.
Declare his glory(LN) among the nations,
    his marvelous deeds(LO) among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(LP)
    he is to be feared(LQ) above all gods.(LR)
For all the gods of the nations are idols,(LS)
    but the Lord made the heavens.(LT)
Splendor and majesty(LU) are before him;
    strength and glory(LV) are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord,(LW) all you families of nations,(LX)
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering(LY) and come into his courts.(LZ)
Worship the Lord(MA) in the splendor of his[z] holiness;(MB)

85 Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.

Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.

Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.

Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.

Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?

Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.

I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

12 Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.

13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

86 Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.

10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

14 O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.

15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

16 O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.

17 Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

87 His foundation is in the holy mountains.

The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.

I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.

And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.

The Lord shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

88 O lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:

Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;

For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.

I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:

Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.

Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: Lord, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.

10 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.

11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?

12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.

14 Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?

15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

16 Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

17 They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.

18 Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

89 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O Lord: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

For who in the heaven can be compared unto the Lord? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the Lord?

God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.

O Lord God of hosts, who is a strong Lord like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

10 Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

12 The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

13 Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.

16 In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.

17 For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

18 For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

19 Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

20 I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.

22 The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

23 And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.

24 But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.

29 His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;

32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.

38 But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.

39 Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

40 Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.

41 All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.

42 Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

43 Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.

44 Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.

45 The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

46 How long, Lord? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

47 Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?

48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.

49 Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;

51 Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.

52 Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen, and Amen.

90 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

92 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High:

To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,

Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.

For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.

O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.

A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

But thou, Lord, art most high for evermore.

For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.

11 Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.

12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.

14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;

15 To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

93 The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.

Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.

94 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.

Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.

Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage.

They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.

Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;

13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.

18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.

19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?

21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

22 But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.

95 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.

For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,

Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.

10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:

11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

96 O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth.

Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.

For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.

Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength.

Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

10 Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.

12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice

13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

97 The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O Lord.

For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.

10 Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

12 Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

98 O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

The Lord hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together

Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

99 The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

The Lord is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.

He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

Thou answeredst them, O Lord our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.

100 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

101 I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing.

I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto thee.

Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.

For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth.

My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.

By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.

I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.

I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.

Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me.

For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping.

10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down.

11 My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.

12 But thou, O Lord, shall endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.

13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.

15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

16 When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.

17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord.

19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth;

20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

21 To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;

22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.

25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

103 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;

18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

19 The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

20 Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21 Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

22 Bless the Lord, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul.

104 Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.

At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.

They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.

Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.

10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills.

11 They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst.

12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.

13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.

14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;

15 And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.

16 The trees of the Lord are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;

17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.

18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies.

19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.

20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.

21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.

22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.

23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.

26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.

28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

31 The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.

32 He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.

33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.

35 Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the Lord, O my soul. Praise ye the Lord.

105 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.

Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.

Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.

Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen.

He is the Lord our God: his judgments are in all the earth.

He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.

Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;

10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:

11 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:

12 When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.

13 When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;

14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;

15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread.

17 He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:

18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron:

19 Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him.

20 The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.

21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:

22 To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.

23 Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

24 And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.

25 He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants.

26 He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen.

27 They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.

28 He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word.

29 He turned their waters into blood, and slew their fish.

30 Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings.

31 He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, and lice in all their coasts.

32 He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land.

33 He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and brake the trees of their coasts.

34 He spake, and the locusts came, and caterpillers, and that without number,

35 And did eat up all the herbs in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.

36 He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength.

37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

38 Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them.

39 He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.

40 The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

41 He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.

42 For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant.

43 And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness:

44 And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people;

45 That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the Lord.

106 Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?

Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;

That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

11 And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.

12 Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

13 They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord.

17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan and covered the company of Abiram.

18 And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

21 They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.

26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

28 They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

33 Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them:

35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.

36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,

38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.

42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.

43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:

45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

47 Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.

48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the Lord.

107 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;

And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.

They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.

Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;

11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:

12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.

13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.

15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.

17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.

19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.

20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.

28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;

34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.

36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;

37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.

38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.

40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.

42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

108 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.

Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.

I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;

That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.

God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.

10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?

12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

109 Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;

For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.

And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.

When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.

12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.

13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

Prayer that the Lord Will Restore Favor to the Land

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm (A)of the sons of Korah.

85 Lord, You have been favorable to Your land;
You have (B)brought back the captivity of Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;
You have covered all their sin. Selah
You have taken away all Your wrath;
You have turned from the fierceness of Your anger.

(C)Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your anger toward us to cease.
(D)Will You be angry with us forever?
Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?
Will You not (E)revive us again,
That Your people may rejoice in You?
Show us Your mercy, Lord,
And grant us Your salvation.

I will hear what God the Lord will speak,
For He will speak peace
To His people and to His saints;
But let them not turn back to [a]folly.
Surely (F)His salvation is near to those who fear Him,
(G)That glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth have met together;
(H)Righteousness and peace have kissed.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth,
And righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 (I)Yes, the Lord will give what is good;
And our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before Him,
And shall make His footsteps our pathway.

Prayer for Mercy, with Meditation on the Excellencies of the Lord

A Prayer of David.

86 Bow down Your ear, O Lord, hear me;
For I am poor and needy.
Preserve my [b]life, for I am holy;
You are my God;
Save Your servant who trusts in You!
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
For I cry to You all day long.
[c]Rejoice the soul of Your servant,
(J)For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
For (K)You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,
And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For You will answer me.

(L)Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord;
Nor are there any works like Your works.
All nations whom You have made
Shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are great, and (M)do wondrous things;
(N)You alone are God.

11 (O)Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
[d]Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And I will glorify Your name forevermore.
13 For great is Your mercy toward me,
And You have delivered my soul from the depths of [e]Sheol.

14 O God, the proud have risen against me,
And a mob of violent men have sought my life,
And have not set You before them.
15 But (P)You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious,
Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

16 Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me!
Give Your strength to Your servant,
And save the son of Your maidservant.
17 Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed,
Because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

The Glories of the City of God

A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song.

87 His foundation is in the holy mountains.
(Q)The Lord loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwellings of Jacob.
(R)Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God! Selah

“I will make mention of [f]Rahab and Babylon to those who know Me;
Behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’ ”

And of Zion it will be said,
“This one and that one were born in her;
And the Most High Himself shall establish her.”
The Lord will record,
When He (S)registers the peoples:
“This one was born there.” Selah

Both the singers and the players on instruments say,
“All my springs are in you.”

A Prayer for Help in Despondency

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. To the Chief Musician. Set to “Mahalath Leannoth.” A [g]Contemplation of (T)Heman the Ezrahite.

88 O Lord, (U)God of my salvation,
I have cried out day and night before You.
Let my prayer come before You;
[h]Incline Your ear to my cry.

For my soul is full of troubles,
And my life (V)draws near to the grave.
I am counted with those who (W)go[i] down to the pit;
(X)I am like a man who has no strength,
[j]Adrift among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You remember no more,
And who are cut off from Your hand.

You have laid me in the lowest pit,
In darkness, in the depths.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
And You have afflicted me with all (Y)Your waves. Selah
(Z)You have [k]put away my acquaintances far from me;
You have made me an abomination to them;
(AA)I am shut up, and I cannot get out;
My eye wastes away because of affliction.

(AB)Lord, I have called daily upon You;
I have stretched out my hands to You.
10 Will You work wonders for the dead?
Shall [l]the dead arise and praise You? Selah
11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave?
Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?
12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark?
And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13 But to You I have cried out, O Lord,
And in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 Lord, why do You cast off my soul?
Why do You hide Your face from me?
15 I have been afflicted and ready to die from my youth;
I suffer Your terrors;
I am distraught.
16 Your fierce wrath has gone over me;
Your terrors have [m]cut me off.
17 They came around me all day long like water;
They engulfed me altogether.
18 (AC)Loved one and friend You have put far from me,
And my acquaintances into darkness.

Remembering the Covenant with David, and Sorrow for Lost Blessings

A [n]Contemplation of (AD)Ethan the Ezrahite.

89 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever;
With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;
(AE)Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”

“I(AF) have made a covenant with My chosen,
I have (AG)sworn to My servant David:
‘Your seed I will establish forever,
And build up your throne (AH)to all generations.’ ” Selah

And (AI)the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints.
(AJ)For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
(AK)God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.
O Lord God of hosts,
Who is mighty like You, O Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
(AL)You rule the raging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You still them.
10 (AM)You have broken [o]Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain;
You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.

11 (AN)The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.
12 The north and the south, You have created them;
(AO)Tabor and (AP)Hermon rejoice in Your name.
13 You have a mighty arm;
Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Mercy and truth go before Your face.
15 Blessed are the people who know the (AQ)joyful sound!
They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
16 In Your name they rejoice all day long,
And in Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of their strength,
And in Your favor our [p]horn is (AR)exalted.
18 For our shield belongs to the Lord,
And our king to the Holy One of Israel.

19 Then You spoke in a vision to Your [q]holy one,
And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty;
I have exalted one (AS)chosen from the people.
20 (AT)I have found My servant David;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,
21 (AU)With whom My hand shall be established;
Also My arm shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not [r]outwit him,
Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 I will beat down his foes before his face,
And plague those who hate him.

24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
And in My name his horn shall be exalted.
25 Also I will (AV)set his hand over the sea,
And his right hand over the rivers.
26 He shall cry to Me, ‘You are (AW)my Father,
My God, and (AX)the rock of my salvation.’
27 Also I will make him (AY)My firstborn,
(AZ)The highest of the kings of the earth.
28 (BA)My mercy I will keep for him forever,
And My covenant shall stand firm with him.
29 His seed also I will make to endure forever,
(BB)And his throne (BC)as the days of heaven.

30 “If(BD) his sons (BE)forsake My law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they [s]break My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
And their iniquity with stripes.
33 (BF)Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not [t]utterly take from him,
Nor [u]allow My faithfulness to fail.
34 My covenant I will not break,
Nor (BG)alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
35 Once I have sworn (BH)by My holiness;
I will not lie to David:
36 (BI)His seed shall endure forever,
And his throne (BJ)as the sun before Me;
37 It shall be established forever like the moon,
Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah

38 But You have (BK)cast off and (BL)abhorred,[v]
You have been furious with Your [w]anointed.
39 You have renounced the covenant of Your servant;
(BM)You have [x]profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
40 You have broken down all his hedges;
You have brought his [y]strongholds to ruin.
41 All who pass by the way (BN)plunder him;
He is a reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
And have not sustained him in the battle.
44 You have made his [z]glory cease,
And cast his throne down to the ground.
45 The days of his youth You have shortened;
You have covered him with shame. Selah

46 How long, Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your wrath burn like fire?
47 Remember how short my time (BO)is;
For what (BP)futility have You created all the children of men?
48 What man can live and not [aa]see (BQ)death?
Can he deliver his life from the power of [ab]the grave? Selah

49 Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses,
Which You (BR)swore to David (BS)in Your truth?
50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants—
(BT)How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,
51 (BU)With which Your enemies have reproached, O Lord,
With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your [ac]anointed.

52 (BV)Blessed be the Lord forevermore!
Amen and Amen.

BOOK FOUR

Psalms 90–106

The Eternity of God, and Man’s Frailty

A Prayer (BW)of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, (BX)You have been our [ad]dwelling place in all generations.
(BY)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You [ae]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

You turn man to destruction,
And say, (BZ)“Return, O children of men.”
(CA)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
You carry them away like a flood;
(CB)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (CC)they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
(CD)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our (CE)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 (CF)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord!
How long?
And (CG)have compassion on Your servants.
14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
(CH)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15 Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16 Let (CI)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17 (CJ)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And (CK)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God

91 He (CL)who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide (CM)under the shadow of the Almighty.
(CN)I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely (CO)He shall deliver you from the snare of the [af]fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
(CP)He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and [ag]buckler.
(CQ)You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only (CR)with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord, who is (CS)my refuge,
Even the Most High, (CT)your dwelling place,
10 (CU)No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 (CV)For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall [ah]bear you up,
(CW)Lest you [ai]dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will [aj]set him on high, because he has (CX)known My name.
15 He shall (CY)call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be (CZ)with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With [ak]long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

Praise to the Lord for His Love and Faithfulness

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is (DA)good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To (DB)declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night,
(DC)On an instrument of ten strings,
On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.
For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

(DD)O Lord, how great are Your works!
(DE)Your thoughts are very deep.
(DF)A senseless man does not know,
Nor does a fool understand this.
When (DG)the wicked [al]spring up like grass,
And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,
It is that they may be destroyed forever.

(DH)But You, Lord, are on high forevermore.
For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,
For behold, Your enemies shall perish;
All the workers of iniquity shall (DI)be scattered.

10 But (DJ)my [am]horn You have exalted like a wild ox;
I have been (DK)anointed with fresh oil.
11 (DL)My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies;
My ears hear my desire on the wicked
Who rise up against me.

12 (DM)The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be [an]fresh and [ao]flourishing,
15 To declare that the Lord is upright;
(DN)He is my rock, and (DO)there is no unrighteousness in Him.

The Eternal Reign of the Lord

93 The (DP)Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
The Lord is clothed,
(DQ)He has girded Himself with strength.
Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be [ap]moved.
(DR)Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.

The floods have [aq]lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves.
(DS)The Lord on high is mightier
Than the noise of many waters,
Than the mighty waves of the sea.

Your testimonies are very sure;
Holiness adorns Your house,
O Lord, [ar]forever.

God the Refuge of the Righteous

94 O Lord God, (DT)to whom vengeance belongs—
O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth!
Rise up, O (DU)Judge of the earth;
[as]Render punishment to the proud.
Lord, (DV)how long will the wicked,
How long will the wicked triumph?

They (DW)utter speech, and speak insolent things;
All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves.
They break in pieces Your people, O Lord,
And afflict Your heritage.
They slay the widow and the stranger,
And murder the fatherless.
(DX)Yet they say, “The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob [at]understand.”

Understand, you senseless among the people;
And you fools, when will you be wise?
(DY)He who planted the ear, shall He not hear?
He who formed the eye, shall He not see?
10 He who [au]instructs the [av]nations, shall He not correct,
He who teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord (DZ)knows the thoughts of man,
That they are futile.

12 Blessed is the man whom You (EA)instruct, O Lord,
And teach out of Your law,
13 That You may give him [aw]rest from the days of adversity,
Until the pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not [ax]cast off His people,
Nor will He forsake His inheritance.
15 But judgment will return to righteousness,
And all the upright in heart will follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers?
Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
17 Unless the Lord had been my help,
My soul would soon have settled in silence.
18 If I say, “My foot slips,”
Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up.
19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul.

20 Shall (EB)the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law,
Have fellowship with You?
21 They gather together against the life of the righteous,
And condemn (EC)innocent blood.
22 But the Lord has been my defense,
And my God the rock of my refuge.
23 He has brought on them their own iniquity,
And shall [ay]cut them off in their own wickedness;
The Lord our God shall cut them off.

A Call to Worship and Obedience

95 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with (ED)psalms.
For (EE)the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.
[az]In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
(EF)The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let (EG)us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
And (EH)we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep [ba]of His hand.

(EI)Today, if you will hear His voice:
“Do not harden your hearts, as in the [bb]rebellion,
(EJ)As in the day of [bc]trial in the wilderness,
When (EK)your fathers tested Me;
They tried Me, though they (EL)saw My work.
10 For (EM)forty years I was [bd]grieved with that generation,
And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts,
And they do not know My ways.’
11 So (EN)I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

A Song of Praise to God Coming in Judgment(EO)

96 Oh, (EP)sing to the Lord a new song!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
Declare His glory among the [be]nations,
His wonders among all peoples.

For (EQ)the Lord is great and (ER)greatly to be praised;
(ES)He is to be feared above all gods.
For (ET)all the gods of the peoples are idols,
(EU)But the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and (EV)beauty are in His sanctuary.

(EW)Give[bf] to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
Give to the Lord glory and strength.
[bg]Give to the Lord the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Oh, worship the Lord (EX)in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.

10 Say among the [bh]nations, (EY)“The Lord reigns;
The world also is firmly established,
It shall not be [bi]moved;
(EZ)He shall judge the peoples righteously.”

11 (FA)Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
(FB)Let the sea roar, and [bj]all its fullness;
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice
13     before the Lord.
For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
(FC)He shall judge the world with righteousness,
And the peoples with His truth.

A Song of Praise to the Sovereign Lord

97 The Lord (FD)reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of [bk]isles be glad!

(FE)Clouds and darkness surround Him;
(FF)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
(FG)A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.
(FH)His lightnings light the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
(FI)The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
(FJ)The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.

(FK)Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,
Who boast of idols.
(FL)Worship Him, all you gods.
Zion hears and is glad,
And the daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You, Lord, are (FM)most high above all the earth;
(FN)You are exalted far above all gods.

10 You who love the Lord, (FO)hate evil!
(FP)He preserves the souls of His saints;
(FQ)He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 (FR)Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
12 (FS)Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
(FT)And give thanks [bl]at the remembrance of [bm]His holy name.

A Song of Praise to the Lord for His Salvation and Judgment

A Psalm.

98 Oh, (FU)sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has (FV)done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
(FW)The Lord has made known His salvation;
(FX)His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the [bn]nations.
He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(FY)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together
    before the Lord,
(FZ)For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with [bo]equity.

Praise to the Lord for His Holiness

99 The Lord reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!
(GA)He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be [bp]moved!
The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great and awesome name—
[bq]He is holy.

The King’s strength also loves justice;
You have established equity;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at His footstool—
He is holy.

Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who (GB)called upon His name;
They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar;
They kept His testimonies and the [br]ordinance He gave them.

You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.
Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at His holy hill;
For the Lord our God is holy.

A Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People

(GC)A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

100 Make (GD)a joyful shout to the Lord, [bs]all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
(GE)It is He who has made us, and [bt]not we ourselves;
(GF)We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

(GG)Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
(GH)His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

Promised Faithfulness to the Lord

A Psalm of David.

101 I will sing of mercy and justice;
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.

I will behave wisely in a [bu]perfect way.
Oh, when will You come to me?
I will (GI)walk within my house with a perfect heart.

I will set nothing [bv]wicked before my eyes;
(GJ)I hate the work of those (GK)who fall away;
It shall not cling to me.
A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will not (GL)know wickedness.

Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor,
Him I will destroy;
(GM)The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart,
Him I will not endure.

My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land,
That they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a [bw]perfect way,
He shall serve me.
He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who tells lies shall not [bx]continue in my presence.
(GN)Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
That I may cut off all the evildoers (GO)from the city of the Lord.

The Lord’s Eternal Love

A Prayer of the afflicted, (GP)when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord,
And let my cry come to You.
(GQ)Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my trouble;
Incline Your ear to me;
In the day that I call, answer me speedily.

For my days [by]are (GR)consumed like smoke,
And my bones are burned like a hearth.
My heart is stricken and withered like grass,
So that I forget to eat my bread.
Because of the sound of my groaning
My bones cling to my [bz]skin.
I am like a pelican of the wilderness;
I am like an owl of the desert.
I lie awake,
And am like a sparrow alone on the housetop.

My enemies reproach me all day long;
Those who deride me swear an oath against me.
For I have eaten ashes like bread,
And mingled my drink with weeping,
10 Because of Your indignation and Your wrath;
For You have lifted me up and cast me away.
11 My days are like a shadow that lengthens,
And I wither away like grass.

12 But You, O Lord, shall endure forever,
And the remembrance of Your name to all generations.
13 You will arise and have mercy on Zion;
For the time to favor her,
Yes, the set time, has come.
14 For Your servants take pleasure in her stones,
And show favor to her dust.
15 So the [ca]nations shall (GS)fear the name of the Lord,
And all the kings of the earth Your glory.
16 For the Lord shall build up Zion;
(GT)He shall appear in His glory.
17 (GU)He shall regard the prayer of the destitute,
And shall not despise their prayer.

18 This will be (GV)written for the generation to come,
That (GW)a people yet to be created may praise the Lord.
19 For He (GX)looked down from the height of His sanctuary;
From heaven the Lord viewed the earth,
20 (GY)To hear the groaning of the prisoner,
To release those appointed to death,
21 To (GZ)declare the name of the Lord in Zion,
And His praise in Jerusalem,
22 (HA)When the peoples are gathered together,
And the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.

23 He weakened my strength in the way;
He (HB)shortened my days.
24 (HC)I said, “O my God,
Do not take me away in the midst of my days;
(HD)Your years are throughout all generations.
25 (HE)Of old You laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
26 (HF)They will perish, but You will [cb]endure;
Yes, they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will change them,
And they will be changed.
27 But (HG)You are the same,
And Your years will have no end.
28 (HH)The children of Your servants will continue,
And their descendants will be established before You.”

Praise for the Lord’s Mercies

A Psalm of David.

103 Bless (HI)the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
(HJ)Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who (HK)heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
(HL)Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that (HM)your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all who are oppressed.
(HN)He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.
(HO)The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
(HP)He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10 (HQ)He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He (HR)removed our transgressions from us.
13 (HS)As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
14 For He [cc]knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.

15 As for man, (HT)his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16 (HU)For the wind passes over it, and it is [cd]gone,
And (HV)its place remembers it no more.
17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
18 (HW)To such as keep His covenant,
And to those who remember His commandments to do them.

19 The Lord has established His throne in heaven,
And (HX)His kingdom rules over all.

20 (HY)Bless the Lord, you His angels,
Who excel in strength, who (HZ)do His word,
Heeding the voice of His word.
21 Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,
(IA)You [ce]ministers of His, who do His pleasure.
22 Bless the Lord, all His works,
In all places of His dominion.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Praise to the Sovereign Lord for His Creation and Providence(IB)

104 Bless (IC)the Lord, O my soul!

O Lord my God, You are very great:
You are clothed with honor and majesty,
Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment,
Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.

(ID)He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters,
Who makes the clouds His chariot,
Who walks on the wings of the wind,
Who makes His angels spirits,
His [cf]ministers a flame of fire.

You who [cg]laid the foundations of the earth,
So that it should not be moved forever,
You (IE)covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters stood above the mountains.
At Your rebuke they fled;
At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away.
[ch]They went up over the mountains;
They went down into the valleys,
To the place which You founded for them.
You have (IF)set a boundary that they may not pass over,
(IG)That they may not return to cover the earth.

10 He sends the springs into the valleys;
They flow among the hills.
11 They give drink to every beast of the field;
The wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 By them the birds of the heavens have their home;
They sing among the branches.
13 (IH)He waters the hills from His upper chambers;
The earth is satisfied with (II)the fruit of Your works.

14 (IJ)He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,
And vegetation for the service of man,
That he may bring forth (IK)food from the earth,
15 And (IL)wine that makes glad the heart of man,
Oil to make his face shine,
And bread which strengthens man’s heart.
16 The trees of the Lord are full of sap,
The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,
17 Where the birds make their nests;
The stork has her home in the fir trees.
18 The high hills are for the wild goats;
The cliffs are a refuge for the (IM)rock[ci] badgers.

19 (IN)He appointed the moon for seasons;
The (IO)sun knows its going down.
20 (IP)You make darkness, and it is night,
In which all the beasts of the forest creep about.
21 (IQ)The young lions roar after their prey,
And seek their food from God.
22 When the sun rises, they gather together
And lie down in their dens.
23 Man goes out to (IR)his work
And to his labor until the evening.

24 (IS)O Lord, how manifold are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all.
The earth is full of Your (IT)possessions—
25 This great and wide sea,
In which are innumerable teeming things,
Living things both small and great.
26 There the ships sail about;
There is that (IU)Leviathan[cj]
Which You have [ck]made to play there.

27 (IV)These all wait for You,
That You may give them their food in due season.
28 What You give them they gather in;
You open Your hand, they are filled with good.
29 You hide Your face, they are troubled;
(IW)You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.
30 (IX)You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the earth.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
May the Lord (IY)rejoice in His works.
32 He looks on the earth, and it (IZ)trembles;
(JA)He touches the hills, and they smoke.

33 (JB)I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
34 May my (JC)meditation be sweet to Him;
I will be glad in the Lord.
35 May (JD)sinners be consumed from the earth,
And the wicked be no more.

Bless the Lord, O my soul!
[cl]Praise the Lord!

The Eternal Faithfulness of the Lord(JE)

105 Oh, (JF)give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
(JG)Make known His deeds among the peoples!
Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
(JH)Talk of all His wondrous works!
Glory in His holy name;
Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
Seek the Lord and His strength;
(JI)Seek His face evermore!
(JJ)Remember His marvelous works which He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
O seed of Abraham His servant,
You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!

He is the Lord our God;
(JK)His judgments are in all the earth.
He (JL)remembers His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,
(JM)The covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
10 And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 Saying, (JN)“To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the allotment of your inheritance,”
12 (JO)When they were few in number,
Indeed very few, (JP)and strangers in it.

13 When they went from one nation to another,
From one kingdom to another people,
14 (JQ)He permitted no one to do them wrong;
Yes, (JR)He rebuked kings for their sakes,
15 Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”

16 Moreover (JS)He called for a famine in the land;
He destroyed all the (JT)provision of bread.
17 (JU)He sent a man before them—
Joseph—who (JV)was sold as a slave.
18 (JW)They hurt his feet with fetters,
[cm]He was laid in irons.
19 Until the time that his word came to pass,
(JX)The word of the Lord tested him.
20 (JY)The king sent and released him,
The ruler of the people let him go free.
21 (JZ)He made him lord of his house,
And ruler of all his possessions,
22 To [cn]bind his princes at his pleasure,
And teach his elders wisdom.

23 (KA)Israel also came into Egypt,
And Jacob dwelt (KB)in the land of Ham.
24 (KC)He increased His people greatly,
And made them stronger than their enemies.
25 (KD)He turned their heart to hate His people,
To deal craftily with His servants.

26 (KE)He sent Moses His servant,
And Aaron whom He had chosen.
27 They (KF)performed His signs among them,
And wonders in the land of Ham.
28 He sent darkness, and made it dark;
And they did not rebel against His word.
29 (KG)He turned their waters into blood,
And killed their fish.
30 (KH)Their land abounded with frogs,
Even in the chambers of their kings.
31 (KI)He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
And lice in all their territory.
32 (KJ)He gave them hail for rain,
And flaming fire in their land.
33 (KK)He struck their vines also, and their fig trees,
And splintered the trees of their territory.
34 (KL)He spoke, and locusts came,
Young locusts without number,
35 And ate up all the vegetation in their land,
And devoured the fruit of their ground.
36 (KM)He also [co]destroyed all the firstborn in their land,
(KN)The first of all their strength.

37 (KO)He also brought them out with silver and gold,
And there was none feeble among His tribes.
38 (KP)Egypt was glad when they departed,
For the fear of them had fallen upon them.
39 (KQ)He spread a cloud for a covering,
And fire to give light in the night.
40 (KR)The people asked, and He brought quail,
And (KS)satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
41 (KT)He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
It ran in the dry places like a river.

42 For He remembered (KU)His holy promise,
And Abraham His servant.
43 He brought out His people with joy,
His chosen ones with [cp]gladness.
44 (KV)He gave them the lands of the [cq]Gentiles,
And they inherited the labor of the nations,
45 (KW)That they might observe His statutes
And keep His laws.

[cr]Praise the Lord!

Joy in Forgiveness of Israel’s Sins

106 Praise[cs] the Lord!

(KX)Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

Who can [ct]utter the mighty acts of the Lord?
Who can declare all His praise?
Blessed are those who keep justice,
And [cu]he who (KY)does righteousness at (KZ)all times!

(LA)Remember me, O Lord, with the favor You have toward Your people.
Oh, visit me with Your salvation,
That I may see the benefit of Your chosen ones,
That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,
That I may glory with [cv]Your inheritance.

(LB)We have sinned with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity,
We have done wickedly.
Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders;
They did not remember the multitude of Your mercies,
(LC)But rebelled by the sea—the Red Sea.

Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake,
(LD)That He might make His mighty power known.
(LE)He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it dried up;
So (LF)He led them through the depths,
As through the wilderness.
10 He (LG)saved them from the hand of him who hated them,
And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11 (LH)The waters covered their enemies;
There was not one of them left.
12 (LI)Then they believed His words;
They sang His praise.

13 (LJ)They soon forgot His works;
They did not wait for His counsel,
14 (LK)But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
And tested God in the desert.
15 (LL)And He gave them their request,
But (LM)sent leanness into their soul.

16 When (LN)they envied Moses in the camp,
And Aaron the saint of the Lord,
17 (LO)The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan,
And covered the faction of Abiram.
18 (LP)A fire was kindled in their company;
The flame burned up the wicked.

19 (LQ)They made a calf in Horeb,
And worshiped the molded image.
20 Thus (LR)they changed their glory
Into the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They forgot God their Savior,
Who had done great things in Egypt,
22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
Awesome things by the Red Sea.
23 (LS)Therefore He said that He would destroy them,
Had not Moses His chosen one (LT)stood before Him in the breach,
To turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them.

24 Then they despised (LU)the pleasant land;
They (LV)did not believe His word,
25 (LW)But complained in their tents,
And did not heed the voice of the Lord.
26 (LX)Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them,
(LY)To [cw]overthrow them in the wilderness,
27 (LZ)To [cx]overthrow their descendants among the [cy]nations,
And to scatter them in the lands.

28 (MA)They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor,
And ate sacrifices [cz]made to the dead.
29 Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds,
And the plague broke out among them.
30 (MB)Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
And the plague was stopped.
31 And that was accounted to him (MC)for righteousness
To all generations forevermore.

32 (MD)They angered Him also at the waters of [da]strife,
(ME)So that it went ill with Moses on account of them;
33 (MF)Because they rebelled against His Spirit,
So that he spoke rashly with his lips.

34 (MG)They did not destroy the peoples,
(MH)Concerning whom the Lord had commanded them,
35 (MI)But they mingled with the Gentiles
And learned their works;
36 (MJ)They served their idols,
(MK)Which became a snare to them.
37 (ML)They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to (MM)demons,
38 And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And (MN)the land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus they [db]were (MO)defiled by their own works,
And (MP)played[dc] the harlot by their own deeds.

40 Therefore (MQ)the wrath of the Lord was kindled against His people,
So that He abhorred (MR)His own inheritance.
41 And (MS)He gave them into the hand of the Gentiles,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them,
And they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 (MT)Many times He delivered them;
But they rebelled in their counsel,
And were brought low for their iniquity.

44 Nevertheless He regarded their affliction,
When (MU)He heard their cry;
45 (MV)And for their sake He remembered His covenant,
And (MW)relented (MX)according to the multitude of His mercies.
46 (MY)He also made them to be pitied
By all those who carried them away captive.

47 (MZ)Save us, O Lord our God,
And gather us from among the Gentiles,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
To triumph in Your praise.

48 (NA)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel
From everlasting to everlasting!
And let all the people say, “Amen!”

[dd]Praise the Lord!

BOOK FIVE

Psalms 107–150

Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Great Works of Deliverance

107 Oh, (NB)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His [de]mercy endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
And (NC)gathered out of the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the south.

They wandered in (ND)the wilderness in a desolate way;
They found no city to dwell in.
Hungry and thirsty,
Their soul fainted in them.
(NE)Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.
And He led them forth by the (NF)right way,
That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
(NG)Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
For (NH)He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness.

10 Those who (NI)sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
(NJ)Bound[df] in affliction and irons—
11 Because they (NK)rebelled against the words of God,
And [dg]despised (NL)the counsel of the Most High,
12 Therefore He brought down their heart with labor;
They fell down, and there was (NM)none to help.
13 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14 (NN)He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
15 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
16 For He has (NO)broken the gates of bronze,
And cut the bars of iron in two.

17 Fools, (NP)because of their transgression,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18 (NQ)Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they (NR)drew near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
20 (NS)He sent His word and (NT)healed them,
And (NU)delivered them from their destructions.
21 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
22 (NV)Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And (NW)declare His works with [dh]rejoicing.

23 Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters,
24 They see the works of the Lord,
And His wonders in the deep.
25 For He commands and (NX)raises the stormy wind,
Which lifts up the waves of the sea.
26 They mount up to the heavens,
They go down again to the depths;
(NY)Their soul melts because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
And [di]are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brings them out of their distresses.
29 (NZ)He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.
30 Then they are glad because they are quiet;
So He guides them to their desired haven.
31 (OA)Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
32 Let them exalt Him also (OB)in the assembly of the people,
And praise Him in the company of the elders.

33 He (OC)turns rivers into a wilderness,
And the watersprings into dry ground;
34 A (OD)fruitful land into [dj]barrenness,
For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 (OE)He turns a wilderness into pools of water,
And dry land into watersprings.
36 There He makes the hungry dwell,
That they may establish a city for a dwelling place,
37 And sow fields and plant vineyards,
That they may yield a fruitful harvest.
38 (OF)He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly;
And He does not let their cattle (OG)decrease.

39 When they are (OH)diminished and brought low
Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow,
40 (OI)He pours contempt on princes,
And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way;
41 (OJ)Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction,
And (OK)makes their families like a flock.
42 (OL)The righteous see it and rejoice,
And all (OM)iniquity stops its mouth.

43 (ON)Whoever is wise will observe these things,
And they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

Assurance of God’s Victory over Enemies(OO)

A Song. A Psalm of David.

108 O (OP)God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
(OQ)Awake, lute and harp!
I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your mercy is great above the [dk]heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the clouds.

(OR)Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And Your glory above all the earth;
(OS)That Your beloved may be delivered,
Save with Your right hand, and [dl]hear me.

God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice;
I will divide Shechem
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine; Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [dm]helmet for My head;
(OT)Judah is My lawgiver.
Moab is My washpot;
Over Edom I will cast My shoe;
Over Philistia I will triumph.”

10 (OU)Who will bring me into the strong city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Is it not You, O God, who cast us off?
And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies?
12 Give us help from trouble,
For the help of man is useless.
13 (OV)Through God we will do valiantly,
For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.

Plea for Judgment of False Accusers

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

109 Do(OW) not keep silent,
O God of my praise!
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful
Have opened against me;
They have spoken against me with a (OX)lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me (OY)without a cause.
In return for my love they are my accusers,
But I give myself to prayer.
Thus (OZ)they have rewarded me evil for good,
And hatred for my love.

Set a wicked man over him,
And let (PA)an [dn]accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him be found guilty,
And (PB)let his prayer become sin.
Let his days be (PC)few,
And (PD)let another take his office.
(PE)Let his children be fatherless,
And his wife a widow.
10 Let his children [do]continually be vagabonds, and beg;
Let them [dp]seek their bread also from their desolate places.
11 (PF)Let the creditor seize all that he has,
And let strangers plunder his labor.
12 Let there be none to extend mercy to him,
Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
13 (PG)Let his [dq]posterity be cut off,
And in the generation following let their (PH)name be blotted out.

14 (PI)Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
And let not the sin of his mother (PJ)be blotted out.
15 Let them be continually before the Lord,
That He may (PK)cut off the memory of them from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show mercy,
But persecuted the poor and needy man,
That he might even slay the (PL)broken in heart.
17 (PM)As he loved cursing, so let it come to him;
As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him.
18 As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
So let it (PN)enter his body like water,
And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him like the garment which covers him,
And for a belt with which he girds himself continually.
20 Let this be the Lord’s reward to my accusers,
And to those who speak evil against my person.

21 But You, O God the Lord,
Deal with me for Your name’s sake;
Because Your mercy is good, deliver me.
22 For I am poor and needy,
And my heart is wounded within me.
23 I am gone (PO)like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My (PP)knees are weak through fasting,
And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness.
25 I also have become (PQ)a reproach to them;
When they look at me, (PR)they shake their heads.

26 Help me, O Lord my God!
Oh, save me according to Your mercy,
27 (PS)That they may know that this is Your hand—
That You, Lord, have done it!
28 (PT)Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, let them be ashamed,
But let (PU)Your servant rejoice.
29 (PV)Let my accusers be clothed with shame,
And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle.

30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth;
Yes, (PW)I will praise Him among the multitude.
31 For (PX)He shall stand at the right hand of the poor,
To save him from those [dr]who condemn him.

Announcement of the Messiah’s Reign(PY)

A Psalm of David.

110 The (PZ)Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your (QA)footstool.”
The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength (QB)out of Zion.
(QC)Rule in the midst of Your enemies!

(QD)Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
(QE)In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.
The Lord has sworn
And (QF)will not relent,
“You are a (QG)priest forever
According to the order of (QH)Melchizedek.”

The Lord is (QI)at Your right hand;
He shall [ds]execute kings (QJ)in the day of His wrath.
He shall judge among the nations,
He shall fill the places with dead bodies,
(QK)He shall [dt]execute the heads of many countries.
He shall drink of the brook by the wayside;
(QL)Therefore He shall lift up the head.

Praise to God for His Faithfulness and Justice

111 Praise[du] the Lord!

(QM)I will praise the Lord with my whole heart,
In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.

(QN)The works of the Lord are great,
(QO)Studied by all who have pleasure in them.
His work is (QP)honorable and glorious,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonderful works to be remembered;
(QQ)The Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will ever be mindful of His covenant.
He has declared to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the [dv]heritage of the nations.

The works of His hands are (QR)verity[dw] and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
(QS)They stand fast forever and ever,
And are (QT)done in truth and uprightness.
(QU)He has sent redemption to His people;
He has commanded His covenant forever:
(QV)Holy and awesome is His name.

10 (QW)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever.

The Blessed State of the Righteous

112 Praise[dx] the Lord!

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
Who (QX)delights greatly in His commandments.

(QY)His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
(QZ)Wealth and riches will be in his house,
And his righteousness [dy]endures forever.
(RA)Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness;
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
(RB)A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs (RC)with discretion.
Surely he will never be shaken;
(RD)The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
(RE)He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
His (RF)heart is established;
(RG)He will not be afraid,
Until he (RH)sees his desire upon his enemies.

He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever;
His [dz]horn will be exalted with honor.
10 The wicked will see it and be grieved;
He will gnash his teeth and melt away;
The desire of the wicked shall perish.

The Majesty and Condescension of God

113 Praise[ea] the Lord!

(RI)Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord!
(RJ)Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore!
(RK)From the rising of the sun to its going down
The Lord’s name is to be praised.

The Lord is (RL)high above all nations,
(RM)His glory above the heavens.
(RN)Who is like the Lord our God,
Who dwells on high,
(RO)Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in the heavens and in the earth?

(RP)He raises the poor out of the dust,
And lifts the (RQ)needy out of the ash heap,
That He may (RR)seat him with princes—
With the princes of His people.
(RS)He grants the [eb]barren woman a home,
Like a joyful mother of children.

Praise the Lord!

The Power of God in His Deliverance of Israel(RT)

114 When (RU)Israel went out of Egypt,
The house of Jacob (RV)from a people [ec]of strange language,
(RW)Judah became His sanctuary,
And Israel His dominion.

(RX)The sea saw it and fled;
(RY)Jordan turned back.
(RZ)The mountains skipped like rams,
The little hills like lambs.
(SA)What ails you, O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned back?
O mountains, that you skipped like rams?
O little hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob,
(SB)Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of waters.

The Futility of Idols and the Trustworthiness of God

115 Not (SC)unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.
Why should the [ed]Gentiles say,
(SD)“So where is their God?”

(SE)But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
(SF)Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
(SG)Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

(SH)O Israel, trust in the Lord;
(SI)He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord [ee]has been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 (SJ)He will bless those who fear the Lord,
Both small and great.

14 May the Lord give you increase more and more,
You and your children.
15 May you be (SK)blessed by the Lord,
(SL)Who made heaven and earth.

16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.
17 (SM)The dead do not praise the Lord,
Nor any who go down into silence.
18 (SN)But we will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.

Praise the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

116 I (SO)love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

(SP)The [ef]pains of death surrounded me,
And the [eg]pangs of Sheol [eh]laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

(SQ)Gracious is the Lord, and (SR)righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (SS)rest, O my soul,
For (ST)the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

(SU)For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
I will walk before the Lord
(SV)In the land of the living.
10 (SW)I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 (SX)I said in my haste,
(SY)“All men are liars.”

12 What shall I render to the Lord
For all His benefits toward me?
13 I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
14 (SZ)I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people.

15 (TA)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His saints.

16 O Lord, truly (TB)I am Your servant;
I am Your servant, (TC)the son of Your maidservant;
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to You (TD)the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (TE)courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

[ei]Praise the Lord!

Let All Peoples Praise the Lord

117 Praise (TF)the Lord, all you Gentiles!
[ej]Laud Him, all you peoples!
For His merciful kindness is great toward us,
And (TG)the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Praise the Lord!

Praise to God for His Everlasting Mercy

118 Oh, (TH)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
(TI)For His mercy endures forever.

(TJ)Let Israel now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

(TK)I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and (TL)set me in a broad place.
(TM)The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
(TN)The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore (TO)I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
(TP)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.
(TQ)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations surrounded me,
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
11 They (TR)surrounded me,
Yes, they surrounded me;
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
12 They surrounded me (TS)like bees;
They were quenched (TT)like a fire of thorns;
For in the name of the Lord I will [ek]destroy them.
13 You pushed me violently, that I might fall,
But the Lord helped me.
14 (TU)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation
Is in the tents of the righteous;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 (TV)The right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 (TW)I shall not die, but live,
And (TX)declare the works of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (TY)chastened[el] me severely,
But He has not given me over to death.

19 (TZ)Open to me the gates of righteousness;
I will go through them,
And I will praise the Lord.
20 (UA)This is the gate of the Lord,
(UB)Through which the righteous shall enter.

21 I will praise You,
For You have (UC)answered me,
And have become my salvation.

22 (UD)The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
23 [em]This was the Lord’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save now, I pray, O Lord;
O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.
26 (UE)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 God is the Lord,
And He has given us (UF)light;
Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will praise You;
(UG)You are my God, I will exalt You.

29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

Meditations on the Excellencies of the Word of God

א ALEPH

119 Blessed are the [en]undefiled in the way,
(UH)Who walk in the law of the Lord!
Blessed are those who keep His testimonies,
Who seek Him with the (UI)whole heart!
(UJ)They also do no iniquity;
They walk in His ways.
You have commanded us
To keep Your precepts diligently.
Oh, that my ways were directed
To keep Your statutes!
(UK)Then I would not be ashamed,
When I look into all Your commandments.
I will praise You with uprightness of heart,
When I learn Your righteous judgments.
I will keep Your statutes;
Oh, do not forsake me utterly!

ב BETH

How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have (UL)sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 (UM)Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord!
Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have (UN)declared
All the judgments of Your mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts,
And [eo]contemplate Your ways.
16 I will (UO)delight myself in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.

ג GIMEL

17 (UP)Deal bountifully with Your servant,

Wondrous things from Your law.
19 (UQ)I am a stranger in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 (UR)My soul [ep]breaks with longing
For Your judgments at all times.
21 You rebuke the proud—the cursed,
Who stray from Your commandments.
22 (US)Remove from me reproach and contempt,
For I have kept Your testimonies.
23 Princes also sit and speak against me,
But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
24 Your testimonies also are my delight
And my counselors.

25 (UT)My soul clings to the dust;
(UU)Revive me according to Your word.

So (UW)shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.
28 (UX)My soul [eq]melts from [er]heaviness;
Strengthen me according to Your word.
29 Remove from me the way of lying,
And grant me Your law graciously.
30 I have chosen the way of truth;
Your judgments I have laid before me.
31 I cling to Your testimonies;
O Lord, do not put me to shame!
32 I will run the course of Your commandments,
For You shall (UY)enlarge my heart.

ה HE

33 (UZ)Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,

And not to (VB)covetousness.
37 (VC)Turn[et] away my eyes from (VD)looking at worthless things,
And revive me in [eu]Your way.
38 (VE)Establish Your word to Your servant,
Who is devoted to fearing You.
39 Turn away my reproach which I dread,
For Your judgments are good.
40 Behold, I long for Your precepts;
Revive me in Your righteousness.

ו WAW

41 Let Your mercies come also to me, O Lord
Your salvation according to Your word.
42 So shall I have an answer for him who [ev]reproaches me,
For I trust in Your word.
43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
For I have hoped in Your ordinances.
44 So shall I keep Your law continually,
Forever and ever.
45 And I will walk [ew]at (VF)liberty,
For I seek Your precepts.
46 (VG)I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings,
And will not be ashamed.
47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments,
Which I love.
48 My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments,
Which I love,
And I will meditate on Your statutes.

ז ZAYIN

49 Remember the word to Your servant,
Upon which You have caused me to hope.
50 This is my (VH)comfort in my affliction,
For Your word has given me life.
51 The proud have me in great derision,
Yet I do not turn aside from Your law.
52 I remembered Your judgments of old, O Lord,
And have comforted myself.
53 (VI)Indignation has taken hold of me
Because of the wicked, who forsake Your law.
54 Your statutes have been my songs
In the house of my pilgrimage.
55 (VJ)I remember Your name in the night, O Lord,
And I keep Your law.
56 This has become mine,
Because I kept Your precepts.

ח HETH

57 (VK)You are my portion, O Lord;
I have said that I would keep Your words.
58 I entreated Your favor with my whole heart;
Be merciful to me according to Your word.
59 I (VL)thought about my ways,
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I made haste, and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The cords of the wicked have bound me,
But I have not forgotten Your law.
62 (VM)At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You,
Because of Your righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all who fear You,
And of those who keep Your precepts.
64 (VN)The earth, O Lord, is full of Your mercy;
Teach me Your statutes.

ט TETH

65 You have dealt well with Your servant,
O Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good judgment and (VO)knowledge,
For I believe Your commandments.

But now I keep Your word.
68 You are (VQ)good, and do good;
Teach me Your statutes.
69 The proud have (VR)forged[ex] a lie against me,
But I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart.
70 (VS)Their heart is [ey]as fat as grease,
But I delight in Your law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 (VT)The law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of coins of gold and silver.

י YOD

73 (VU)Your hands have made me and fashioned me;
Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
74 (VV)Those who fear You will be glad when they see me,
Because I have hoped in Your word.
75 I know, O Lord, (VW)that Your judgments are [ez]right,
And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
76 Let, I pray, Your merciful kindness be for my comfort,
According to Your word to Your servant.
77 Let Your tender mercies come to me, that I may live;
For Your law is my delight.
78 Let the proud (VX)be ashamed,
For they treated me wrongfully with falsehood;
But I will meditate on Your precepts.
79 Let those who fear You turn to me,
Those who know Your testimonies.
80 Let my heart be blameless regarding Your statutes,
That I may not be ashamed.

כ KAPH

81 (VY)My soul faints for Your salvation,
But I hope in Your word.
82 My eyes fail from searching Your word,
Saying, “When will You comfort me?”
83 For (VZ)I have become like a wineskin in smoke,
Yet I do not forget Your statutes.
84 (WA)How many are the days of Your servant?
(WB)When will You execute judgment on those who persecute me?
85 (WC)The proud have dug pits for me,
Which is not according to Your law.
86 All Your commandments are faithful;
They persecute me (WD)wrongfully;
Help me!
87 They almost made an end of me on earth,
But I did not forsake Your precepts.
88 Revive me according to Your lovingkindness,
So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

ל LAMED

89 (WE)Forever, O Lord,
Your word [fa]is settled in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
You established the earth, and it [fb]abides.
91 They continue this day according to (WF)Your ordinances,
For all are Your servants.
92 Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have given me life.
94 I am Yours, save me;
For I have sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked wait for me to destroy me,
But I will [fc]consider Your testimonies.
96 (WG)I have seen the consummation of all perfection,
But Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

מ MEM

(WH)It is my meditation all the day.

Because I keep Your precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not departed from Your judgments,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 (WL)How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding;
Therefore I hate every false way.

And a light to my path.
106 (WN)I have sworn and confirmed

Forever, to the very end.

And do not let me (WU)be ashamed of my hope.
117 [fh]Hold me up, and I shall be safe,
And I shall observe Your statutes continually.
118 You reject all those who stray from Your statutes,
For their deceit is falsehood.
119 You [fi]put away all the wicked of the earth (WV)like [fj]dross;
Therefore I love Your testimonies.
120 (WW)My flesh trembles for fear of You,
And I am afraid of Your judgments.

ע AYIN

121 I have done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be (WX)surety[fk] for Your servant for good;

I consider to be right;
I hate every false way.

Plea for Relief from Bitter Foes

A Song of Ascents.

120 In (YH)my distress I cried to the Lord,
And He heard me.
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips
And from a deceitful tongue.

What shall be given to you,
Or what shall be done to you,
You false tongue?
Sharp arrows of the [fs]warrior,
With coals of the broom tree!

Woe is me, that I dwell in (YI)Meshech,
(YJ)That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
My soul has dwelt too long
With one who hates peace.
I am for peace;
But when I speak, they are for war.

God the Help of Those Who Seek Him

A Song of Ascents.

121 I (YK)will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
(YL)My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

(YM)He will not allow your foot to [ft]be moved;
(YN)He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your [fu]keeper;
The Lord is (YO)your shade (YP)at your right hand.
(YQ)The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall [fv]preserve you from all evil;
He shall (YR)preserve your soul.
The Lord shall (YS)preserve[fw] your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.

The Joy of Going to the House of the Lord

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

122 I was glad when they said to me,
(YT)“Let us go into the house of the Lord.”
Our feet have been standing
Within your gates, O Jerusalem!

Jerusalem is built
As a city that is (YU)compact together,
(YV)Where the tribes go up,
The tribes of the Lord,
[fx]To (YW)the Testimony of Israel,
To give thanks to the name of the Lord.
(YX)For thrones are set there for judgment,
The thrones of the house of David.

(YY)Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls,
Prosperity within your palaces.”
For the sake of my brethren and companions,
I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
Because of the house of the Lord our God
I will (YZ)seek your good.

Prayer for Relief from Contempt

A Song of Ascents.

123 Unto You (ZA)I lift up my eyes,
O You (ZB)who dwell in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
(ZC)So our eyes look to the Lord our God,
Until He has mercy on us.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us!
For we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
Our soul is exceedingly filled
With the scorn of those who are at ease,
With the contempt of the proud.

The Lord the Defense of His People

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

124 “If it had not been the Lord who was on our (ZD)side,”
(ZE)Let Israel now say—
“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
Then they would have (ZF)swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have [fy]gone over our soul;
Then the swollen waters
Would have [fz]gone over our soul.”

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
(ZG)Our soul has escaped (ZH)as a bird from the snare of the [ga]fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
(ZI)Our help is in the name of the Lord,
(ZJ)Who made heaven and earth.

The Lord the Strength of His People

A Song of Ascents.

125 Those who trust in the Lord
Are like Mount Zion,
Which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the Lord surrounds His people
From this time forth and forever.

For (ZK)the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
On the land allotted to the righteous,
Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity.

Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
And to those who are upright in their hearts.

As for such as turn aside to their (ZL)crooked ways,
The Lord shall lead them away
With the workers of iniquity.

(ZM)Peace be upon Israel!

A Joyful Return to Zion

A Song of Ascents.

126 When (ZN)the Lord brought back [gb]the captivity of Zion,
(ZO)We were like those who dream.
Then (ZP)our mouth was filled with laughter,
And our tongue with singing.
Then they said among the [gc]nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
And we are glad.

Bring back our captivity, O Lord,
As the streams in the South.

(ZQ)Those who sow in tears
Shall reap in joy.
He who continually goes [gd]forth weeping,
Bearing [ge]seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again [gf]with (ZR)rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.

Laboring and Prospering with the Lord

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless (ZS)the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To (ZT)eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.

Behold, (ZU)children are a heritage from the Lord,
(ZV)The fruit of the womb is a (ZW)reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
(ZX)Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
(ZY)They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

Blessings of Those Who Fear the Lord

A Song of Ascents.

128 Blessed (ZZ)is every one who fears the Lord,
Who walks in His ways.

(AAA)When you eat the [gg]labor of your hands,
You shall be happy, and it shall be (AAB)well with you.
Your wife shall be (AAC)like a fruitful vine
In the very heart of your house,
Your (AAD)children (AAE)like olive plants
All around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
Who fears the Lord.

(AAF)The Lord bless you out of Zion,
And may you see the good of Jerusalem
All the days of your life.
Yes, may you (AAG)see your children’s children.

(AAH)Peace be upon Israel!

Song of Victory over Zion’s Enemies

A Song of Ascents.

129 “Many a time they have (AAI)afflicted[gh] me from (AAJ)my youth,”
(AAK)Let Israel now say—
“Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth;
Yet they have not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed on my back;
They made their furrows long.”
The Lord is righteous;
He has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked.

Let all those who hate Zion
Be put to shame and turned back.
Let them be as the (AAL)grass on the housetops,
Which withers before it grows up,
With which the reaper does not fill his hand,
Nor he who binds sheaves, his [gi]arms.
Neither let those who pass by them say,
(AAM)“The blessing of the Lord be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the Lord!”

Waiting for the Redemption of the Lord

A Song of Ascents.

130 Out (AAN)of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice!
Let Your ears be attentive
To the voice of my supplications.

(AAO)If You, Lord, should [gj]mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could (AAP)stand?
But there is (AAQ)forgiveness with You,
That (AAR)You may be feared.

(AAS)I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And (AAT)in His word I do hope.
(AAU)My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning—
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

(AAV)O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For (AAW)with the Lord there is mercy,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And (AAX)He shall redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Simple Trust in the Lord

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

131 Lord, my heart is not [gk]haughty,
Nor my eyes [gl]lofty.
(AAY)Neither do I [gm]concern myself with great matters,
Nor with things too [gn]profound for me.

Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul,
(AAZ)Like a weaned child with his mother;
Like a weaned child is my soul within me.

(ABA)O Israel, hope in the Lord
From this time forth and forever.

The Eternal Dwelling of God in Zion

A Song of Ascents.

132 Lord, remember David
And all his afflictions;
How he swore to the Lord,
(ABB)And vowed to (ABC)the Mighty One of Jacob:
“Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house,
Or go up to the comfort of my bed;
I will (ABD)not give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I (ABE)find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it (ABF)in Ephrathah;
(ABG)We found it (ABH)in the fields of [go]the woods.
Let us go into His tabernacle;
(ABI)Let us worship at His footstool.
(ABJ)Arise, O Lord, to Your resting place,
You and (ABK)the ark of Your strength.
Let Your priests (ABL)be clothed with righteousness,
And let Your saints shout for joy.

10 For Your servant David’s sake,
Do not turn away the face of Your [gp]Anointed.

11 (ABM)The Lord has sworn in truth to David;
He will not turn from it:
“I will set upon your throne (ABN)the [gq]fruit of your body.
12 If your sons will keep My covenant
And My testimony which I shall teach them,
Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.”

13 (ABO)For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His [gr]dwelling place:
14 “This(ABP) is My resting place forever;
Here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
15 (ABQ)I will abundantly bless her [gs]provision;
I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 (ABR)I will also clothe her priests with salvation,
(ABS)And her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
17 (ABT)There I will make the [gt]horn of David grow;
(ABU)I will prepare a lamp for My [gu]Anointed.
18 His enemies I will (ABV)clothe with shame,
But upon Himself His crown shall flourish.”

Blessed Unity of the People of God

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For (ABW)brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.
It is like the dew of (ABX)Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion;
For (ABY)there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore.

Praising the Lord in His House at Night

A Song of Ascents.

134 Behold, bless the Lord,
All you servants of the Lord,
Who by night stand in the house of the Lord!
(ABZ)Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
And bless the Lord.

The Lord who made heaven and earth
Bless you from Zion!

Praise to God in Creation and Redemption

135 Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord;
(ACA)Praise Him, O you servants of the Lord!
(ACB)You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In (ACC)the courts of the house of our God,
Praise the Lord, for (ACD)the Lord is good;
Sing praises to His name, (ACE)for it is pleasant.
For (ACF)the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His [gv]special treasure.

For I know that (ACG)the Lord is great,
And our Lord is above all gods.
(ACH)Whatever the Lord pleases He does,
In heaven and in earth,
In the seas and in all deep places.
(ACI)He causes the [gw]vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
(ACJ)He makes lightning for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His (ACK)treasuries.

(ACL)He [gx]destroyed the firstborn of Egypt,
[gy]Both of man and beast.
(ACM)He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt,
(ACN)Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 (ACO)He defeated many nations
And slew mighty kings—
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
And (ACP)all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 (ACQ)And gave their land as a [gz]heritage,
A heritage to Israel His people.

13 (ACR)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
Your fame, O Lord, throughout all generations.
14 (ACS)For the Lord will judge His people,
And He will have compassion on His servants.

15 (ACT)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear;
Nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

19 (ACU)Bless the Lord, O house of Israel!
Bless the Lord, O house of Aaron!
20 Bless the Lord, O house of Levi!
You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (ACV)out of Zion,
Who dwells in Jerusalem!

Praise the Lord!

Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy

136 Oh, (ACW)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
(ACX)For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to (ACY)the God of gods!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
For His mercy endures forever:

To Him (ACZ)who alone does great wonders,
For His mercy endures forever;
(ADA)To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
For His mercy endures forever;
(ADB)To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
For His mercy endures forever;
(ADC)To Him who made great lights,
For His mercy endures forever—
(ADD)The sun to rule by day,
For His mercy endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His mercy endures forever.

10 (ADE)To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn,
For His mercy endures forever;
11 (ADF)And brought out Israel from among them,
For His mercy endures forever;
12 (ADG)With a strong hand, and with [ha]an outstretched arm,
For His mercy endures forever;
13 (ADH)To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
For His mercy endures forever;
14 And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His mercy endures forever;
15 (ADI)But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
For His mercy endures forever;
16 (ADJ)To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His mercy endures forever;
17 (ADK)To Him who struck down great kings,
For His mercy endures forever;
18 (ADL)And slew famous kings,
For His mercy endures forever—
19 (ADM)Sihon king of the Amorites,
For His mercy endures forever;
20 (ADN)And Og king of Bashan,
For His mercy endures forever—
21 (ADO)And gave their land as a [hb]heritage,
For His mercy endures forever;
22 A heritage to Israel His servant,
For His mercy endures forever.

23 Who (ADP)remembered us in our lowly state,
For His mercy endures forever;
24 And (ADQ)rescued us from our enemies,
For His mercy endures forever;
25 (ADR)Who gives food to all flesh,
For His mercy endures forever.

26 Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.

Longing for Zion in a Foreign Land

137 By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down, yea, we wept
When we remembered Zion.
We hung our harps
Upon the willows in the midst of it.
For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song,
And those who (ADS)plundered us requested mirth,
Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

How shall we sing the Lord’s song
In a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget its skill!
If I do not remember you,
Let my (ADT)tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—
If I do not exalt Jerusalem
Above my chief joy.

Remember, O Lord, against (ADU)the sons of Edom
The day of Jerusalem,
Who said, [hc]“Raze it, raze it,
To its very foundation!”

O daughter of Babylon, (ADV)who are to be destroyed,
Happy the one (ADW)who repays you as you have served us!
Happy the one who takes and (ADX)dashes
Your little ones against the rock!

The Lord’s Goodness to the Faithful

A Psalm of David.

138 I will praise You with my whole heart;
(ADY)Before the gods I will sing praises to You.
(ADZ)I will worship (AEA)toward Your holy temple,
And praise Your name
For Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have (AEB)magnified Your word above all Your name.
In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul.

(AEC)All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.
Yes, they shall sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
(AED)Though the Lord is on high,
Yet (AEE)He regards the lowly;
But the proud He knows from afar.

(AEF)Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch out Your hand
Against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
(AEG)The Lord will [hd]perfect that which concerns me;
Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever;
(AEH)Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

God’s Perfect Knowledge of Man

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

139 O Lord, (AEI)You have searched me and known me.
(AEJ)You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You (AEK)understand my thought afar off.
(AEL)You [he]comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, (AEM)You know it altogether.
You have [hf]hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
(AEN)Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.

(AEO)Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
(AEP)If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
(AEQ)If I make my bed in [hg]hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall [hh]fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12 Indeed, (AER)the darkness [hi]shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

13 For You formed my inward parts;
You [hj]covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for [hk]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 (AES)My [hl]frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

17 (AET)How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.

19 Oh, that You would (AEU)slay the wicked, O God!
(AEV)Depart from me, therefore, you [hm]bloodthirsty men.
20 For they (AEW)speak against You wickedly;
[hn]Your enemies take Your name in vain.
21 (AEX)Do I not hate them, O Lord, who hate You?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
22 I hate them with [ho]perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.

23 (AEY)Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And (AEZ)lead me in the way everlasting.

Prayer for Deliverance from Evil Men

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

140 Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men;
Preserve me from violent men,
Who plan evil things in their hearts;
(AFA)They continually gather together for war.
They sharpen their tongues like a serpent;
The (AFB)poison of asps is under their lips. Selah

(AFC)Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
Preserve me from violent men,
Who have purposed to make my steps stumble.
The proud have hidden a (AFD)snare for me, and cords;
They have spread a net by the wayside;
They have set traps for me. Selah

I said to the Lord: “You are my God;
Hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.
O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation,
You have [hp]covered my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant, O Lord, the desires of the wicked;
Do not further his wicked scheme,
(AFE)Lest they be exalted. Selah
