Gwrandewch, blant, addysg tad, ac erglywch i ddysgu deall. Canys yr ydwyf fi yn rhoddi i chwi addysg dda: na wrthodwch fy nghyfraith. Canys yr oeddwn yn fab i’m tad, yn dyner ac yn annwyl yng ngolwg fy mam. Efe a’m dysgai, ac a ddywedai wrthyf, Dalied dy galon fy ngeiriau: cadw fy ngorchmynion, a bydd fyw. Cais ddoethineb, cais ddeall: na ad dros gof, ac na ŵyra oddi wrth eiriau fy ngenau. Nac ymâd â hi, a hi a’th geidw: câr hi, a hi a’th wared di. Pennaf peth yw doethineb: cais ddoethineb; ac â’th holl gyfoeth cais ddeall. Dyrchafa di hi, a hithau a’th ddyrchafa di: hi a’th ddwg di i anrhydedd, os cofleidi hi. Hi a rydd ychwaneg o ras i’th ben di: ie, hi a rydd i ti goron gogoniant. 10 Gwrando, fy mab, a derbyn fy ngeiriau; a blynyddoedd dy fywyd a amlheir. 11 Yr ydwyf yn dy ddysgu yn ffordd doethineb; ac yn dy dywys yn llwybrau uniondeb. 12 Pan rodiech, dy gerddediad ni bydd gyfyng; a phan redech, ni thramgwyddi. 13 Ymafael mewn addysg, ac na ollwng hi: cadw hi; canys dy fywyd di yw hi.

14 Na ddos i lwybr yr annuwiolion, ac na rodia ar hyd ffordd y drygionus. 15 Gochel hi, na ddos ar hyd‐ddi; cilia oddi wrthi hi, a dos heibio. 16 Canys ni chysgant nes gwneuthur drwg; a’u cwsg a gollant, nes iddynt gwympo rhyw ddyn. 17 Canys y maent yn bwyta bara annuwioldeb, ac yn yfed gwin trais. 18 Ond llwybr y cyfiawn sydd fel y goleuni, yr hwn a lewyrcha fwyfwy hyd ganol dydd. 19 Eithr ffordd y drygionus sydd fel y tywyllwch: ni wyddant wrth ba beth y tramgwyddant.

20 Fy mab, gwrando ar fy ngeiriau: gogwydda dy glust at fy ymadroddion. 21 Na ad iddynt fyned ymaith o’th olwg: cadw hwynt yng nghanol dy galon. 22 Canys bywyd ydynt i’r neb a’u caffont, ac iechyd i’w holl gnawd.

23 Cadw dy galon yn dra diesgeulus; canys allan ohoni y mae bywyd yn dyfod. 24 Bwrw oddi wrthyt enau taeogaidd, a gwefusau trofaus ymhell oddi wrthyt. 25 Edryched dy lygaid yn uniawn; ac edryched dy amrantau yn uniawn o’th flaen. 26 Ystyria lwybr dy draed: a threfner dy holl ffyrdd yn uniawn. 27 Na thro ar y llaw ddeau nac ar y llaw aswy; symud dy droed oddi wrth ddrygioni.

Security in Wisdom

Hear, (A)my children, the instruction of a father,
And give attention to know understanding;
For I give you good doctrine:
Do not forsake my law.
When I was my father’s son,
(B)Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother,
(C)He also taught me, and said to me:
“Let your heart retain my words;
(D)Keep my commands, and live.
(E)Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
(F)Love her, and she will keep you.
(G)Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.
(H)Exalt her, and she will promote you;
She will bring you honor, when you embrace her.
She will place on your head (I)an ornament of grace;
A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings,
(J)And the years of your life will be many.
11 I have (K)taught you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in right paths.
12 When you walk, (L)your steps will not be hindered,
(M)And when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go;
Keep her, for she is your life.

14 (N)Do not enter the path of the wicked,
And do not walk in the way of evil.
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
16 (O)For they do not sleep unless they have done evil;
And their sleep is [a]taken away unless they make someone fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness,
And drink the wine of violence.

18 (P)But the path of the just (Q)is like the shining [b]sun,
That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
19 (R)The way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know what makes them stumble.

20 My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes;
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them,
And health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of (S)life.
24 Put away from you a [c]deceitful mouth,
And put perverse lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
26 Ponder the path of your (T)feet,
And let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.

A Father’s Wise Instruction

Hear, O sons, the (A)discipline of a father,
And (B)pay attention that you may know understanding,
For I give you [a]sound (C)learning;
(D)Do not forsake my [b]instruction.
When I was a son to my father,
(E)Tender and (F)the only son before my mother,
Then he (G)instructed me and said to me,
“Let your heart (H)hold fast my words;
(I)Keep my commandments and live;
(J)Acquire wisdom! (K)Acquire understanding!
Do not forget and do not turn away from the sayings of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
(L)Love her, and she will guard you.
[c](M)The beginning of wisdom is: (N)Acquire wisdom;
And with all your acquiring, acquire understanding.
(O)Prize her, and she will exalt you;
She will honor you if you embrace her.
She will give (P)for your head a garland of grace;
She will present you with a crown of beauty.”

10 Hear, my son, and (Q)receive my sayings
And the (R)years of your life will be many.
11 I have (S)instructed you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in upright tracks.
12 When you walk, your (T)steps will not be impeded;
And if you run, you (U)will not stumble.
13 (V)Seize discipline; do not let go.
Guard her, for she is your (W)life.
14 (X)Do not enter the path of wicked men
And do not step into the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, do not pass by it;
(Y)Stray from it and pass on.
16 For they (Z)do not sleep unless they do evil;
And [d]they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.
17 For they (AA)eat the bread of wickedness
And drink the wine of violence.
18 But the (AB)path of the righteous is like the (AC)light of dawn,
That (AD)shines brighter and brighter until the (AE)fullness of day.
19 The (AF)way of the wicked is like thick darkness;
They do not know over what they [e](AG)stumble.

20 My son, (AH)pay attention to my words;
(AI)Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 (AJ)Do not let them deviate from your eyes;
(AK)Keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are (AL)life to those who find them
And (AM)healing to all his flesh.
23 Guard your heart with all diligence,
For (AN)from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you a (AO)perverse mouth
And (AP)put devious lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly ahead
And even let your eyelids be fixed straight in front of you.
26 (AQ)Watch the track of your feet
And all your (AR)ways will be established.
27 (AS)Do not turn to the right nor to the left;
(AT)Turn your foot from evil.
