アグルのことば
30 次に挙げるのは、マサの人（アラビヤ半島の中央部以東に住む、イシュマエルの子孫）でヤケの子アグルが、イティエルとウカルに教えたことです。
2 私は疲れ果て、今にも死にそうです。
そのうえ、人間の資格さえないような愚か者です。
3 神はもとより、
人間というものがわかりません。
それがわかるのは神だけです。
4 神のほかにだれが、
天と地の間を上り下りしたでしょう。
だれが風や海を思いのまま造り、治めているでしょう。
神のほかにだれが、世界を造ったというのでしょう。
いるとしたら、どこのだれで、
子どもは何という名前ですか。
5 神のことばはすべて真実で、
神は頼ってくる者をみな守ってくださいます。
6 だから、神の言うことに何かを付け加えて、
うそをついたと言われないようにしなさい。
7 ああ、神よ。最後の二つの願いを聞いてください。
8 私が決してうそをつきませんように。
それから、私を特に貧乏にも金持ちにもせず、
ただ生きるのにどうしても必要なものだけを
与えてください。
9 ぜいたくに慣れすぎて主を忘れたり、
貧しさのあまり盗みを働いて
神の名を汚したりしたくないのです。
10 主人にしもべの悪口を言ってはいけません。
そんなことをすれば恨まれるだけです。
11-12 親をのろい、悪いことばかりしているくせに、
自分は少しも欠点がないとすましている者がいます。
13-14 彼らは自分のことを鼻にかけ、
人を人とも思いません。
貧しい人を陥れようと、
いつも歯を研ぎすましているのです。
15-16 蛭のようにしつこく、
いつまでも満足しないものが二つ、三つ、
いいえ四つあります。
地獄、不妊の胎、乾ききった荒野、それに火です。
17 父親をあざけり、母親を軽蔑するような者は、
からすに目をほじくられ、はげたかの餌になるのです。
18-19 どんなに考えてもわからないことが三つ、
いいえ四つあります。
どのようにしてわしは大空を飛び、
どのようにして蛇は岩の上をはい、
どのようにして船は海を横切る道を見つけ、
どのようにして若い二人の間に
愛情が芽生えるのでしょう。
20 わからないことがもう一つあります。
どうして悪い女は、悪いことをしながら厚かましく、
「いったい、どこがいけないの」と言えるのでしょう。
21-23 地も震えるほどいやなことが三つ、
いいえ四つあります。
奴隷が王になり、反逆者が成功し、
きらわれた女が結婚し、
女中が女主人に取って代わることです。
24-28 体は小さくても、
頭の良さでは何にも負けないものが四つあります。
力はなくても、冬の食糧を集める蟻、
弱くても、岩の間に住んで身を守る岩だぬき、
指導者がなくても、いっしょに行動するいなご、
簡単に捕まるけれど、王宮にでも住みつくやもりです。
29-31 地上に堂々としたものが三つ、いいえ四つあります。
怖いもののない百獣の王ライオン、
くじゃく、雄やぎ、軍隊を指揮する王です。
32 得意になって悪いことをするのは愚か者です。
少しは恥ずかしいと思うべきです。
33 クリームをかきまぜるとバターができ、
鼻をなぐられると血が出るように、
人を怒らせると争いが起きます。

Sayings of Agur
30 The sayings(A) of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.
This man’s utterance to Ithiel:
“I am weary, God,
but I can prevail.[a]
2 Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
3 I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.(B)
4 Who has gone up(C) to heaven and come down?
Whose hands(D) have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters(E) in a cloak?(F)
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name,(G) and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!
5 “Every word of God is flawless;(H)
he is a shield(I) to those who take refuge in him.
6 Do not add(J) to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
7 “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.(K)
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown(L) you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’(M)
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.(N)
10 “Do not slander a servant to their master,
or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.
11 “There are those who curse their fathers
and do not bless their mothers;(O)
12 those who are pure in their own eyes(P)
and yet are not cleansed of their filth;(Q)
13 those whose eyes are ever so haughty,(R)
whose glances are so disdainful;
14 those whose teeth(S) are swords
and whose jaws are set with knives(T)
to devour(U) the poor(V) from the earth
and the needy from among mankind.(W)
15 “The leech has two daughters.
‘Give! Give!’ they cry.
“There are three things that are never satisfied,(X)
four that never say, ‘Enough!’:
16 the grave,(Y) the barren womb,
land, which is never satisfied with water,
and fire, which never says, ‘Enough!’
17 “The eye that mocks(Z) a father,
that scorns an aged mother,
will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,
will be eaten by the vultures.(AA)
18 “There are three things that are too amazing for me,
four that I do not understand:
19 the way of an eagle in the sky,
the way of a snake on a rock,
the way of a ship on the high seas,
and the way of a man with a young woman.
20 “This is the way of an adulterous woman:
She eats and wipes her mouth
and says, ‘I’ve done nothing wrong.’(AB)
21 “Under three things the earth trembles,
under four it cannot bear up:
22 a servant who becomes king,(AC)
a godless fool who gets plenty to eat,
23 a contemptible woman who gets married,
and a servant who displaces her mistress.
24 “Four things on earth are small,
yet they are extremely wise:
25 Ants are creatures of little strength,
yet they store up their food in the summer;(AD)
26 hyraxes(AE) are creatures of little power,
yet they make their home in the crags;
27 locusts(AF) have no king,
yet they advance together in ranks;
28 a lizard can be caught with the hand,
yet it is found in kings’ palaces.
29 “There are three things that are stately in their stride,
four that move with stately bearing:
30 a lion, mighty among beasts,
who retreats before nothing;
31 a strutting rooster, a he-goat,
and a king secure against revolt.[b]
32 “If you play the fool and exalt yourself,
or if you plan evil,
clap your hand over your mouth!(AG)
33 For as churning cream produces butter,
and as twisting the nose produces blood,
so stirring up anger produces strife.”

レムエルのことば
31 これは、マサの王レムエルが母親から教わったことです。
2 レムエルよ、おまえは神から授かった子です。
3 だから、女に夢中になって
自分をだめにしてはいけません。
4 レムエルよ、強い酒は王が飲むものではありません。
5 酔ってばかりいたら、王の仕事は務まりません。
苦しめられている人のために、
正しい裁判をしてあげることもできません。
6-7 酒は、治る見込みのない病人や
悲しみに沈んでいる人に飲ませるものです。
酒で苦しさをまぎらわせるためです。
8 だれからも見放された人を守ってあげなさい。
9 正しい裁判をして、
貧しい人や困っている人を助けてあげなさい。
10 ほんとうに良い妻を見つけたら、
宝石よりもすばらしいものを
手に入れたことになるのです。
11 彼女は夫に信頼され、
夫に決して不自由な思いはさせません。
12 いつも陰にあって夫を助け、
足を引っ張るようなことはしません。
13 また羊毛や亜麻を見つけては、喜びながらつむぎ、
14 外国から船で運ばれて来た輸入食品を買います。
15 まだ暗いうちに起きて朝食のしたくをすませ、
使用人の仕事の計画を立てるのが、彼女の務めです。
16 畑を買うときは自分の目でよく調べて買い、
ぶどう畑をつくります。
17 こまねずみのように働き、
18 無駄な買い物はしません。
夜は夜で、遅くまでせっせと働くのです。
19-20 貧しい人には服を縫って与え、
困っている人を喜んで助けます。
21 家族みんなの冬服をちゃんと用意してあるので、
冬がきてもあわてません。
22 部屋には最高級のじゅうたんを敷き、
紫色の上等のガウンを着ます。
23 夫は人々に信頼される町の指導者の一人です。
24 彼女はまた、リンネルでベルトつきの服を作り、
商人に売ります。
25 上品で何事にもしっかりしている彼女には、
老後の心配など少しもありません。
26 決して愚かなことは言わず、いつも人を思いやります。
27 家のことに何から何まで気を配り、
かた時も怠けません。
28 子どもたちは彼女をほめ、夫も負けずにほめます。
29 「君はほんとうにすばらしい。
世界中を探しても、君ほどの女性はいない。」
30 人は見かけの美しさにすぐだまされますが、
そんな美しさは長続きしません。
しかし主を恐れる女はほめたたえられます。
31 「りっぱな女だ」と評判になり、
ついには国の指導者にまで称賛されるようになります。

Sayings of King Lemuel
31 The sayings(A) of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!(B)
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.(C)
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,(D)
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink(E) and forget what has been decreed,(F)
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine(G) for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink(H) and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 Speak(I) up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.(J)
Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10 [b]A wife of noble character(K) who can find?(L)
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband(M) has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.(N)
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.(O)
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.(P)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders(Q) of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.(R)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise(S) at the city gate.

2 竪琴と十弦の琴で、
喜びにあふれる賛美の調べをかなでなさい。
3 新しい賛美歌を作り、巧みにハープをかき鳴らして、
喜びの歌を歌いなさい。
4 主のことばには偽りがなく、
その行為にも裏切りは決してありません。
5 主はすべて正しいこと、良いことを愛しておられ、
地上はその優しい愛で潤っています。
6 あの星をちりばめた天空も、
主のおことばひとつで造られました。
7 神様は海を造り、水を注がれました。
8 全世界の人は、老いも若きも、男も女も、
恐れかしこみながら主の前に立ちなさい。
9 主のおことばで、この世界は始まったからです。
10 主はひと息で、反抗的な国々の策略を吹き消されます。
11 主の計画はいつまでも不滅で、
主のお考えはいつの時代にも揺るぎません。
12 主を信じる民は幸せです。
主から選ばれた民だからです。
13-15 人の心を造られた主は、
天の住まいから全人類を見下ろし、
一人一人の行動をつぶさに眺めておられます。
16-17 最強の軍備を誇る軍隊でも、
王を救えるわけではありません。

力が救いとはならないのです。
18-19 しかし主の目線は、主を信じて従い、
その変わらない愛に頼る者に注がれます。
ききんのときにも、餓死することはありません。
20 頼ることができるのは主おひとりです。
主が盾となって守ってくださいます。
21 主に信頼する私たちに、喜びがあふれます。

1 Sing joyfully(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
it is fitting(B) for the upright(C) to praise him.
2 Praise the Lord with the harp;(D)
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.(E)
3 Sing to him a new song;(F)
play skillfully, and shout for joy.(G)
4 For the word of the Lord is right(H) and true;(I)
he is faithful(J) in all he does.
5 The Lord loves righteousness and justice;(K)
the earth is full of his unfailing love.(L)
6 By the word(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,(N)

15 こういうわけで、私は、主イエスに対するあなたがたの信仰と、ほかの人たちに対する愛とを耳にして以来、 16 絶えず神に感謝してきました。そしていつも、あなたがたのために、こう祈り求めています。 17 どうか、主イエス・キリストの神、すなわち栄光の父が、あなたがたに知恵を与えて、キリストがどのようなお方か、何をしてくださったかを、正しく、はっきりと理解させてくださいますように。 18 また、心にあふれるほどの光が与えられて、神があなたがたを召して与えようとされる将来を、はっきり見きわめることができますように。 19 また、信じる者を助ける神の力が、どれほど偉大であるかを知ることができますように。
20-21 この同じ偉大な力が、キリストを死者の中から復活させ、ほかのどんな王、支配者、権力者、指導者よりもはるかに高い、天の神の右の座につかせたのです。このキリストの栄誉は、この世だけでなく、次に来る世でも、他のすべてにはるかにまさって輝かしいものです。 22 そして神は、すべてをキリストの足の下に従わせ、キリストを教会の最高のかしらとされました。 23 ですから教会は、キリストの体であって、すべてを造り、すべてを満たすキリストの霊が満ちあふれるところです。

2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(F)
Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(G) who has blessed us in the heavenly realms(H) with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us(I) in him before the creation of the world(J) to be holy and blameless(K) in his sight. In love(L) 5 he[b] predestined(M) us for adoption to sonship[c](N) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure(O) and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace,(P) which he has freely given us in the One he loves.(Q) 7 In him we have redemption(R) through his blood,(S) the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches(T) of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he[d] made known to us the mystery(U) of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed(V) in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment(W)—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.(X)

Thanksgiving and Prayer
15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus(AI) and your love for all God’s people,(AJ) 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you,(AK) remembering you in my prayers.(AL) 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,(AM) may give you the Spirit[f] of wisdom(AN) and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened(AO) in order that you may know the hope to which he has called(AP) you, the riches(AQ) of his glorious inheritance(AR) in his holy people,(AS) 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power(AT) is the same as the mighty strength(AU) 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead(AV) and seated him at his right hand(AW) in the heavenly realms,(AX) 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,(AY) and every name(AZ) that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.(BA) 22 And God placed all things under his feet(BB) and appointed him to be head(BC) over everything for the church, 23 which is his body,(BD) the fullness of him(BE) who fills everything in every way.(BF)
