26 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,
2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him.
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
62 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
63 But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
69 Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.
70 But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

De jødiske ledere søger en anledning til at få Jesus ryddet af vejen(A)
26 Da Jesus var færdig med at undervise sine disciple, sagde han til dem: 2 „I ved, at der kun er to dage til påskefesten begynder.[a] Da vil Menneskesønnen blive forrådt og korsfæstet.”
3 Ypperstepræsterne og de øvrige jødiske ledere holdt møde i ypperstepræsten Kajfas’ hus. 4 De diskuterede, hvordan de uden at vække opsigt kunne få Jesus pågrebet og slået ihjel. 5 „Men ikke under højtiden,” sagde de til hinanden, „for så bliver der uroligheder.”
En kvinde salver Jesu hoved som forberedelse til hans død(B)
6 Jesus og disciplene var inviteret til spisning i Simon den Spedalskes hus i Betania.[b] 7 Da kom en kvinde ind med en alabastkrukke fyldt med en kostbar, aromatisk olie. Den hældte hun ud over Jesu hoved, mens han lå til bords og spiste.
8 Da disciplene så det, blev de fortørnede. „Sikken et spild,” sagde de. 9 „Den olie kunne have indbragt mange penge, og pengene kunne være givet til de fattige.” 10 Jesus hørte, hvad de sagde, og satte dem i rette: „Hvorfor gør I livet surt for hende? Hun fortjener ros for det, hun har gjort for mig. 11 De fattige har I jo altid iblandt jer—men mig har I ikke altid. 12 Hun hældte den olie ud over mit hoved som en forberedelse til min begravelse. 13 Det siger jeg jer: Hvor som helst i hele verden budskabet om mig bliver forkyndt, vil denne fine handling også blive omtalt. Judas beslutter at forråde Jesus(C)
14 Derpå gik Judas Iskariot, en af de Tolv, hen til ypperstepræsterne. 15 „Hvad vil I give mig for at forråde Jesus til jer?” spurgte han. De lovede ham 30 sølvmønter for det. 16 Fra det øjeblik søgte Judas en passende anledning til at forråde Jesus.
Forberedelsen til påskemåltidet(D)
17 På den første af påskefestens[c] dage kom disciplene til Jesus og spurgte: „Hvor ønsker du, at vi skal forberede påskemåltidet for dig?” 18 Han svarede: „Gå ind i byen, find frem til en bestemt mand og sig til ham: ‚Mesteren siger: Øjeblikket er kommet. Jeg vil gerne spise påskemåltidet i dit hus sammen med mine disciple.’ ”
19 Disciplene gjorde, som Jesus havde sagt, og forberedte påskemåltidet.
Jesus forudsiger Judas’ forræderi(E)
20 Ved mørkets frembrud gik Jesus derhen sammen med de Tolv, og de lagde sig ned ved bordet og begyndte måltidet. 21 Mens de spiste, udbrød han: „Det siger jeg jer: En af jer vil forråde mig.” 22 Disciplene blev meget bedrøvede, og den ene efter den anden spurgte ham: „Det er vel ikke mig, Herre?”
23 Jesus svarede: „Ham, der har sin hånd i skålen sammen med mig, vil forråde mig. 24 Selv om Menneskesønnen nødvendigvis må dø, sådan som Skrifterne har sagt, så må jeg sige: Ve det menneske, som forråder mig. Det havde været bedre for ham, om han aldrig havde levet.”
25 „Det er vel ikke mig, Herre?” spurgte Judas, forræderen.
„Jo, det er!” svarede Jesus.

26 Under måltidet tog Jesus et brød, takkede Gud, brækkede det i stykker og delte det ud til disciplene, idet han sagde: „Tag imod dette brød og spis det. Det er mit legeme.” 27 Så tog han et bæger med vin, takkede Gud, sendte det rundt og sagde til dem: „Drik alle heraf, 28 for det er mit blod, som besegler den nye[d] pagt, og som udgydes for mange, for at de kan få tilgivelse for deres synder. 29 Jeg siger jer: Jeg skal ikke drikke vin mere før den dag, da jeg drikker den ny vin sammen med jer i min Fars rige.”
Jesus forudser, at disciplene vil tage afstand fra ham(G)
30 Da Jesus og hans disciple havde sunget lovsangen,[e] gik de ud mod Olivenbjerget.
31 Mens de gik op ad stien, sagde Jesus til dem: „I nat vil I alle tage afstand fra mig, men så bliver det skriftord opfyldt, som siger: ‚Jeg vil slå hyrden ned, og fårene vil blive spredt.’[f] 32 Men efter at jeg er genopstået fra de døde, vil jeg gå i forvejen til Galilæa, så vi kan mødes dér.”
33 „Selv om alle de andre tager afstand fra dig, så vil jeg aldrig svigte dig!” forsikrede Peter.
34 Jesus svarede ham: „Det siger jeg dig: Inden natten er forbi, og hanen galer, har du tre gange nægtet at kendes ved mig.”
35 „Aldrig i livet!” udbrød Peter. „Så vil jeg hellere dø sammen med dig!” Det samme sagde alle de andre disciple.
Jesus kæmper i bøn i Getsemane(H)
36 Jesus og disciplene kom nu til et sted, der hedder Getsemane. „Sæt jer her, mens jeg går hen og beder,” sagde Jesus. 37 Dog tog han Peter og de to sønner af Zebedæus med sig lidt længere frem. Han var sørgmodig og urolig. 38 „Jeg er dybt bedrøvet her op til min død,” udbrød han. „Bliv her og hold jer vågne, mens jeg beder!”
39 Han gik lidt længere frem, faldt på knæ med ansigtet mod jorden og bad: „Far, hvis det er muligt, så tag det her lidelsens bæger fra mig. Dog ikke som jeg vil, men som du vil.”
40 Så gik han tilbage til de tre disciple og så, at de var faldet i søvn. Han vækkede dem og sagde til Peter: „Kunne I ikke holde jer vågne bare én time for min skyld? 41 Viljen er god nok, men i egen kraft kan I ikke. Hvis I ikke skal bukke under for fristelsen, må I være vågne og bede.”
42 Jesus gik igen lidt væk fra dem og bad for anden gang: „Far, hvis det her lidelsens bæger ikke kan tages fra mig, men jeg er nødt til at tømme det, så lad din vilje ske.”
43 Da han kom tilbage til de tre disciple, sov de igen, for deres øjenlåg føltes tunge som bly. 44 Så lod han dem være og gik for tredje gang alene tilbage for at bede den samme bøn igen.
45 Da han derefter kom tilbage til disciplene, sagde han til dem: „Nå, I sover stadig og hviler jer! Tiden er kommet, hvor Menneskesønnen skal gives i onde menneskers vold. 46 Rejs jer og lad os gå! Forræderen er på vej.”
Jesus pågribes og afslår at forsvare sig(I)
47 Ordene hang endnu i luften, da Judas dukkede frem af mørket—han, som var en af de Tolv. Han kom med en stor flok mænd, der var bevæbnet med sværd og knipler og udsendt af ypperstepræsterne og de øvrige jødiske ledere. 48 Forræderen havde i forvejen sagt til dem: „Den mand, jeg hilser med et kys på kinden, ham skal I gribe!”
49 Derfor gik Judas lige hen til Jesus og sagde: „God aften, Mester!” og han kyssede ham på kinden.
50 „Min ven,” svarede Jesus, „er det for at vise din hengivenhed, du er kommet?”[g]
I samme øjeblik omringede mændene Jesus og holdt ham fast. 51 Pludselig trak en af disciplene sit sværd, slog efter ypperstepræstens tjener og huggede hans ene øre af. 52 „Stik dit sværd i skeden!” beordrede Jesus. „De, der griber til vold, vil selv blive ofre for vold. 53 Er du ikke klar over, at jeg kunne råbe til min Far om hjælp, og han ville straks sende mig mere end 12 legioner engle? 54 Men hvordan skulle Guds plan, som er omtalt i Skriften, så blive opfyldt?”
55 Så vendte Jesus sig til dem, der var kommet for at fange ham: „Man skulle tro, det var en farlig forbryder, I var ude efter, sådan som I er bevæbnede. Hvorfor arresterede I mig ikke i templet? Den ene dag efter den anden underviste jeg i templet, uden at I pågreb mig. 56 Men alt, hvad der sker her, er blot en opfyldelse af, hvad profeterne har sagt!”
Da flygtede alle disciplene.
Jesus i forhør hos de jødiske ledere(J)
57 De, der havde pågrebet Jesus, førte ham til ypperstepræsten Kajfas’ hus, hvor de skriftlærde og de øvrige jødiske ledere var forsamlede. 58 Peter fulgte efter på afstand og vovede sig helt ind i gården til ypperstepræstens hus. Her satte han sig blandt vagterne for at se, hvad det ville ende med.
59 Inde i huset prøvede det øverste jødiske råd, anført af ypperstepræsterne, at finde noget, de kunne anklage Jesus for. De ville have ham dømt til døden, men manglede beviser. 60 Selv om mange falske vidner blev ført frem, fandt de ingen holdbare anklager. Til sidst trådte to mænd frem og erklærede: 61 „Den mand har sagt, at han er i stand til at ødelægge Guds tempel og bygge det op igen inden tre dage!”
62 Så rejste ypperstepræsten sig. „Du har hørt anklagerne imod dig,” sagde han til Jesus. „Hvad har du at sige til dit forsvar?” 63 Men Jesus forholdt sig tavs. Så sagde ypperstepræsten til ham: „Jeg tager dig i ed for den levende Guds ansigt. Sig os, om du er Messias, Guds Søn!”
64 „Ja, det er jeg,” svarede Jesus. „Og det siger jeg jer: Engang skal I se Menneskesønnen sidde ved Den almægtige Guds højre side, og I skal se ham komme igen på himlens skyer.”
65 Da rev ypperstepræsten sin kjortel i stykker og råbte: „Han har hånet Gud! Hvad skal vi med flere vidner? I hørte selv, hvad han sagde. 66 Hvad mener I andre?”
„Han er skyldig!” råbte de. „Han skal dø!”
67-68 Så spyttede de ham i ansigtet og slog løs på ham med knyttede næver. Nogle slog ham med stokke og råbte: „Lad os se dine evner som profet, Messias! Hvem var det, der slog dig nu?”
Peter nægter at kendes ved Jesus(K)
69 Mens det her foregik inde i huset, sad Peter nede i gården. På et tidspunkt kom en pige hen til ham. „Du var også sammen med Jesus fra Galilæa,” sagde hun.
70 Peter benægtede det højlydt: „Jeg aner ikke, hvad du taler om!”
71 Derefter gik han ud i portrummet. Men her fik en anden pige øje på ham. „Den mand var sammen med Jesus fra Nazaret,” sagde hun til dem, der stod rundt omkring.
72 „Nej, jeg sværger på, at jeg ikke kender den mand!” svarede Peter.
73 Folk begyndte nu at stimle sammen om ham: „Jo, du er bestemt en af dem!” sagde de. „Din dialekt afslører, hvor du kommer fra.”
74 Peter benægtede endnu en gang og sagde: „Jeg sværger på, at jeg overhovedet ikke kender den mand!” I det samme galede en hane.
75 Da huskede Peter, at Jesus havde sagt: „Inden hanen galer, vil du tre gange nægte at kendes ved mig.” Straks gik han udenfor og brast i en fortvivlet gråd.

La congiura contro Gesù
26 (A)Quando Gesù ebbe finito tutti questi discorsi, disse ai suoi discepoli: 2 «Voi sapete che fra due giorni è la Pasqua, e il Figlio dell’uomo sarà consegnato per essere crocifisso».
3 Allora i capi dei sacerdoti [, gli scribi] e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nel palazzo del sommo sacerdote, che si chiamava Caiafa, 4 e deliberarono di prendere Gesù con inganno e di farlo morire. 5 Ma dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non accada qualche tumulto nel popolo».
Maria di Betania unge il capo a Gesù
6 (B)Mentre Gesù era a Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso, 7 venne a lui una donna che aveva un vaso di alabastro pieno d’olio profumato di gran valore e lo versò sul capo di lui che stava a tavola. 8 Veduto ciò, i [suoi] discepoli si indignarono e dissero: «Perché questo spreco? 9 Questo[a], infatti, si sarebbe potuto vendere caro e dare il denaro ai poveri». 10 Ma Gesù se ne accorse e disse loro: «Perché date noia a questa donna? Giuda decide di tradire Gesù
14 (C)Allora uno dei dodici, che si chiamava Giuda Iscariota, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti 15 e disse: «Che cosa siete disposti a darmi, se io ve lo consegno?» Ed essi gli fissarono trenta sicli d’argento. 16 Da quell’ora cercava il momento opportuno per consegnarlo.

La cena del Signore
26 (E)Mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane e, dopo aver pronunciato la benedizione[c], lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli dicendo: «Prendete, mangiate, questo è il mio corpo». 27 Poi prese un calice[d] e, dopo aver reso grazie, lo diede loro dicendo: «Bevetene tutti, 28 perché questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del [nuovo] patto, il quale è sparso per molti per il perdono dei peccati. 29 Vi dico che da ora in poi non berrò più di questo frutto della vigna, fino al giorno che lo berrò nuovo con voi nel regno del Padre mio».
Gesù predice il rinnegamento di Pietro
30 (F)Dopo che ebbero cantato l’inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi.
31 Allora Gesù disse loro: «Questa notte voi tutti avrete in me un’occasione di caduta; perché è scritto: “Io percuoterò il pastore e le pecore del gregge saranno disperse”[e]. 32 Ma dopo che sarò risuscitato, vi precederò in Galilea». 33 Pietro, rispondendo, gli disse: «Quand’anche tu fossi per tutti un’occasione di caduta, non lo sarai mai per me». 34 Gesù gli disse: «In verità ti dico che questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». 35 E Pietro a lui: «Quand’anche dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò». E lo stesso dissero pure tutti i discepoli.
Agonia di Gesù nel giardino del Getsemani
36 (G)Allora Gesù andò con loro in un podere chiamato Getsemani[f] e disse ai discepoli: «Sedete qui finché io sia andato là e abbia pregato». 37 E, presi con sé Pietro e i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a essere triste e angosciato. 38 Allora disse loro: «L’anima mia è oppressa da tristezza mortale; rimanete qui e vegliate con me». 39 E, andato un po’ più avanti, si gettò con la faccia a terra, pregando e dicendo: «Padre mio, se è possibile, passi oltre da me questo calice! Ma pure, non come voglio io, ma come tu vuoi». 40 Poi tornò dai discepoli e li trovò addormentati. E disse a Pietro: «Così non siete stati capaci di vegliare con me un’ora sola? 41 Vegliate e pregate, affinché non cadiate in tentazione[g]; lo spirito è pronto, ma la carne è debole». 42 Di nuovo, per la seconda volta, andò e pregò, dicendo: «Padre mio, se non è possibile che questo [calice] passi oltre da me senza che io lo beva, sia fatta la tua volontà». 43 E, tornato, li trovò addormentati, perché i loro occhi erano appesantiti. 44 Allora, lasciatili, andò di nuovo e pregò per la terza volta, ripetendo le medesime parole. 45 Poi tornò dai [suoi] discepoli e disse loro: «Dormite pure oramai, e riposatevi! Arresto di Gesù
47 (H)Mentre parlava ancora, ecco arrivare Giuda, uno dei dodici, e insieme a lui una gran folla con spade e bastoni, da parte dei capi dei sacerdoti e degli anziani del popolo. 48 Colui che lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che bacerò, è lui; prendetelo». 49 E in quell’istante, avvicinatosi a Gesù, gli disse: «Ti saluto, Rabbì!» e lo baciò. 50 Ma Gesù gli disse: «Amico, che cosa sei venuto a fare?» Allora, avvicinatisi, misero le mani addosso a Gesù e lo presero.
51 Ed ecco, uno di quelli che erano con Gesù, stesa la mano, tirò fuori la sua spada e, colpito il servo del sommo sacerdote, gli recise l’orecchio. 52 Allora Gesù gli disse: «Riponi la tua spada al suo posto, perché tutti quelli che prendono la spada periranno[h] di spada. 53 Credi forse che io non potrei pregare il Padre mio che mi mandi in questo istante più di dodici legioni[i] d’angeli[j]? 54 Come dunque si adempirebbero le Scritture, secondo le quali bisogna che così avvenga?»
55 In quel momento Gesù disse alla folla: «Voi siete usciti con spade e bastoni, come contro un brigante, per prendermi. Ogni giorno sedevo nel tempio a insegnare e voi non mi avete preso; 56 ma tutto questo è avvenuto affinché si adempissero le Scritture dei profeti». Allora tutti i discepoli lo abbandonarono e fuggirono.
Gesù davanti a Caiafa e al sinedrio
57 (I)Quelli che avevano preso Gesù lo condussero da Caiafa, sommo sacerdote, presso il quale erano riuniti gli scribi e gli anziani. 58 Pietro lo seguiva da lontano, finché giunsero al cortile del sommo sacerdote; ed entrò, mettendosi a sedere con le guardie, per vedere come la vicenda sarebbe finita.
59 I capi dei sacerdoti [, gli anziani] e tutto il sinedrio cercavano qualche falsa testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire; 60 e non ne trovavano, benché si fossero fatti avanti molti falsi testimoni[k]. 61 Alla fine se ne fecero avanti due[l], che dissero: «Costui ha detto: “Io posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e ricostruirlo in tre giorni”». 62 E il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in piedi, gli disse: «Non rispondi nulla? Non senti quello che testimoniano costoro contro di te?» 63 Ma Gesù taceva. E il sommo sacerdote gli disse[m]: «Ti scongiuro per il Dio vivente di dirci se tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio». 64 Gesù gli rispose: «Tu l’hai detto; anzi vi dico che da ora in poi vedrete il Figlio dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nuvole del cielo»[n]. 65 Allora il sommo sacerdote si stracciò le vesti, dicendo: «Egli ha bestemmiato; che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimoni? Ecco, ora avete udito la [sua] bestemmia; 66 che ve ne pare?» Ed essi risposero: «È reo di morte». 67 Allora gli sputarono in viso e gli diedero dei pugni e altri lo schiaffeggiarono[o], 68 dicendo: «Indovina[p], Cristo! Chi ti ha percosso?»
Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro
69 (J)Pietro, intanto, stava seduto fuori nel cortile e una serva gli si avvicinò, dicendo: «Anche tu eri con Gesù il Galileo». 70 Ma egli lo negò davanti a tutti[q], dicendo: «Non so che cosa dici». 71 Come fu uscito nell’atrio, un’altra lo vide e disse a coloro che erano là: «[Anche] costui era con Gesù il Nazareno». 72 Ed egli negò di nuovo giurando: «Non conosco quell’uomo». 73 Di lì a poco, coloro che erano presenti si avvicinarono e dissero a Pietro: «Certo anche tu sei di quelli, perché anche il tuo parlare[r] ti fa riconoscere». 74 Allora egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quell’uomo!» In quell’istante il gallo cantò. 75 Pietro si ricordò delle parole di Gesù che [gli] aveva dette: «Prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte». Jesus Anointed at Bethany(H)(I)
6 While Jesus was in Bethany(J) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AG)
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(AH) for it is written:

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AK)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(AN) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(AO) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AP)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AQ) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AR)
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AS) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AT) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AU)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AV) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AW)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AX) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AY) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[d](AZ)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(BA) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(BB)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(BC) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(BD) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(BE) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(BF) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(BG) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(BH)
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(BI) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(BJ) He entered and sat down with the guards(BK) to see the outcome.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(BL) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(BM) came forward.
Finally two(BN) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(BO)
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BP)
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BQ) by the living God:(BR) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BS) the Son of God.”(BT)
64 “You have said so,”(BU) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BV) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[e](BW)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BX) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,”(BY) they answered.
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BZ) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(CA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(CB)
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(CC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
