8 Do not be like them, (A)for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 (B)Pray then like this:
(C)“Our Father in heaven,
(D)hallowed be (E)your name.[a]
10 (F)Your kingdom come,
(G)your will be done,[b]
(H)on earth as it is in heaven.
11 (I)Give us (J)this day our daily bread,[c]
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And (K)lead us not into temptation,
but (L)deliver us from (M)evil.[d]
14 (N)For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 (O)but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Fasting
16 “And (P)when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. (Q)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, (R)anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. (S)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Lay Up Treasures in Heaven
19 (T)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where (U)moth and rust[e] destroy and where thieves (V)break in and steal, 20 (W)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 (X)“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 (Y)but if (Z)your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 (AA)“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and (AB)money.[f]
Do Not Be Anxious
25 (AC)“Therefore I tell you, (AD)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 (AE)Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. (AF)Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (AG)span of life?[g] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, (AH)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, (AI)O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For (AJ)the Gentiles seek after all these things, and (AK)your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But (AL)seek first (AM)the kingdom of God and his righteousness, (AN)and all these things will be added to you.
34 (AO)“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Judging Others
7 (AP)“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 (AQ)For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and (AR)with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (AS)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
6 (AT)“Do not give (AU)dogs what is holy, and do not throw your (AV)pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
Ask, and It Will Be Given
7 (AW)“Ask, (AX)and it will be given to you; (AY)seek, and you will find; (AZ)knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for (BA)bread, will give him (BB)a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, (BC)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will (BD)your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
The Golden Rule
12 “So (BE)whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is (BF)the Law and the Prophets.
13 (BG)“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[h] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and (BH)the way is hard that leads to life, and (BI)those who find it are few.
A Tree and Its Fruit
15 (BJ)“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are (BK)ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them (BL)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, (BM)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 (BN)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them (BO)by their fruits.
I Never Knew You
21 (BP)“Not everyone who (BQ)says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will (BR)enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who (BS)does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 (BT)On that day (BU)many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not (BV)prophesy in your name, and cast out demons (BW)in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 (BX)And then will I declare to them, ‘I (BY)never knew you; (BZ)depart from me, (CA)you workers of lawlessness.’
Build Your House on the Rock
24 (CB)“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like (CC)a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like (CD)a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
The Authority of Jesus
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, (CE)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 (CF)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
8 When he came down from the mountain, (CG)great crowds followed him. 2 (CH)And behold, a leper[i] came to him and (CI)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 3 And Jesus[j] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, (CJ)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (CK)show yourself to the priest and (CL)offer the gift that Moses commanded, (CM)for a proof to them.”
The Faith of a Centurion
5 (CN)When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, 6 “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” 7 And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but (CO)only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant,[k] ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, (CP)he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with (CQ)no one in Israel[l] have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, (CR)many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 (CS)while the sons of the kingdom (CT)will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place (CU)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you (CV)as you have believed.” (CW)And the servant was healed at that very moment.
Jesus Heals Many
14 (CX)And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw (CY)his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He (CZ)touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were (DA)oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits (DB)with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 (DC)This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: (DD)“He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”
The Cost of Following Jesus
18 Now (DE)when Jesus saw a crowd around him, (DF)he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 (DG)And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave (DH)the dead to bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms a Storm
23 (DI)And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but (DJ)he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, (DK)“Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you (DL)afraid, (DM)O you of little faith?” Then he rose and (DN)rebuked the winds and the sea, and (DO)there was a great calm. 27 And the men (DP)marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even (DQ)winds and sea obey him?”
Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons
28 (DR)And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes,[m] two (DS)demon-possessed[n] men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they (DT)cried out, “What have you to do with us, (DU)O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us (DV)before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the (DW)demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, (DX)they begged him to leave their region.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
9 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to (DY)his own city. 2 (DZ)And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus (EA)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, (EB)“Take heart, my son; (EC)your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, (ED)“This man is blaspheming.” 4 But Jesus, (EE)knowing[o] their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he rose and went home. 8 When the crowds saw it, (EF)they were afraid, and (EG)they glorified God, who had (EH)given such authority to men.
Jesus Calls Matthew
9 (EI)As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called (EJ)Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
10 And as Jesus[p] reclined at table in the house, behold, many (EK)tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, (EL)“Why does your teacher eat with (EM)tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn (EN)what this means: (EO)‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For (EP)I came not to call the righteous, (EQ)but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
14 Then (ER)the disciples of John came to him, saying, (ES)“Why do we and (ET)the Pharisees fast,[q] but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, (EU)“Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? (EV)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (EW)then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old (EX)wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed
18 (EY)While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and (EZ)knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. 20 And behold, a woman (FA)who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched (FB)the fringe of his garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, (FC)“Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” (FD)And instantly[r] the woman was made well. 23 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw (FE)the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for (FF)the girl is not dead but (FG)sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But (FH)when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and (FI)took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went through all that district.
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men
27 (FJ)And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, (FK)Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 (FL)Then he touched their eyes, saying, (FM)“According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, (FN)“See that no one knows about it.” 31 (FO)But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak
32 As they were going away, behold, a (FP)demon-oppressed man who was mute (FQ)was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds (FR)marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”
The Harvest Is Plentiful, the Laborers Few
35 (FS)And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 (FT)When he saw the crowds, (FU)he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, (FV)like sheep without a shepherd. 37 (FW)Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore (FX)pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to (FY)send out laborers into his harvest.”
The Twelve Apostles
10 (FZ)And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2 (GA)The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (GB)who is called Peter, and (GC)Andrew his brother; (GD)James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and (GE)Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;[s] 4 Simon the Zealot,[t] and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
5 (GF)These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of (GG)the Samaritans, 6 (GH)but go rather to (GI)the lost sheep of (GJ)the house of Israel. 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, (GK)‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’[u] 8 (GL)Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,[v] cast out demons. (GM)You received without paying; give without pay. 9 (GN)Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics[w] or sandals or a staff, for (GO)the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, (GP)greet it. 13 And if the house is (GQ)worthy, let (GR)your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let (GS)your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, (GT)shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, (GU)it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for (GV)the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
Persecution Will Come
16 (GW)“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be (GX)wise as serpents and (GY)innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for (GZ)they will deliver you over to courts and flog you (HA)in their synagogues, 18 (HB)and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, (HC)to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 (HD)When (HE)they deliver you over, (HF)do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for (HG)what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 (HH)For it is not you who speak, but (HI)the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 (HJ)Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 (HK)and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. (HL)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they (HM)persecute you in one town, (HN)flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel (HO)before the Son of Man comes.
24 (HP)“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant[x] above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. (HQ)If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign[y] those of his household.
Have No Fear
26 “So have no fear of them, (HR)for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

Fasting

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(Z) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(AA) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(AB) 33 But seek first his kingdom(AC) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(AD) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. 6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Ask, Seek, Knock(AH)
7 “Ask and it will be given to you;(AI) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(AJ) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(AK) to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,(AL) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.(AM)
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(AN) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
True and False Prophets
15 “Watch out for false prophets.(AO) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(AP) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(AQ) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(AR) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(AS) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(AT) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(AU) will enter the kingdom of heaven,(AV) but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.(AW) 22 Many will say to me on that day,(AX) ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’(AY) 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice(BB) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(BC) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(BD) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(BE)
8 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[f](BF) came and knelt before him(BG) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(BH) But go, show yourself to the priest(BI) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(BJ) as a testimony to them.”
The Faith of the Centurion(BK)
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(BL) suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(BM) 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(BN) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(BO) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(BP) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(BQ) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(BR)
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(BS) And his servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus Heals Many(BT)
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(BU) 17 This was to fulfill(BV) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
The Cost of Following Jesus(BX)
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(BY) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(BZ) has no place to lay his head.”
21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(CA) and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm(CB)(CC)
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith,(CD) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(CE)
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(CF)
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[h] two demon-possessed(CG) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(CH) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(CI)
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(CJ)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(CK)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(CL) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(CM) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(CN) he said to the man, “Take heart,(CO) son; your sins are forgiven.”(CP)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(CQ)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(CR) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(CS) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(CT) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(CU)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(CV) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(CW)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[i](CX) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(CY)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(CZ)
14 Then John’s(DA) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(DB) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(DC) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(DD)
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(DE)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(DF) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(DG) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(DH) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(DI) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(DJ) And the woman was healed at that moment.(DK)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(DL) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(DM) but asleep.”(DN) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(DO) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(DP)
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(DQ)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(DR)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(DS) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(DT) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(DU)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(DV) and could not talk(DW) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(DX)
34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(DY)
The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(DZ) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(EA) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(EB) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(EC) is plentiful but the workers are few.(ED) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(EE)(EF)(EG)(EH)(EI)
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(EJ) and to heal every disease and sickness.(EK)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(EL)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(EM) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(EN) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(EO) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[j] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(EP)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(EQ) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(ER) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(ES) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(ET) on the day of judgment(EU) than for that town.(EV)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(EW) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(EX) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(EY) and be flogged in the synagogues.(EZ) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(FA) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(FB) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(FC) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(FD) and have them put to death.(FE) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(FF) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(FG) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(FH)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(FI) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(FJ) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(FK)
