Messengers from John the Baptist

11 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

(A)Now when John heard (B)in prison about the deeds of (C)the Christ, he sent word by (D)his disciples and said to him, “Are you (E)the one who is to come, or shall we (F)look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: (G)the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers[a] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and (H)the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who (I)is not offended by me.”

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out (J)into the wilderness to see? (K)A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man[b] dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. What then did you go out to see? (L)A prophet?[c] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,

(M)“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 (N)From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[d] and the violent take it by force. 13 (O)For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is (P)Elijah who is to come. 15 (Q)He who has ears to hear,[e] let him hear.

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came (R)neither eating (S)nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came (T)eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, (U)a friend of (V)tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”[f]

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 (W)Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 (X)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in (Y)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 (Z)But I tell you, it will be more bearable on (AA)the day of judgment for (AB)Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, (AC)Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to (AD)Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 (AE)But I tell you that (AF)it will be more tolerable on (AG)the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 (AH)At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, (AI)Lord of heaven and earth, that (AJ)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (AK)revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your (AL)gracious will.[g] 27 (AM)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son (AN)except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone (AO)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 (AP)Come to (AQ)me, all who labor and are (AR)heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and (AS)learn from me, for I am (AT)gentle and lowly in heart, and (AU)you will find rest for your souls. 30 For (AV)my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]

When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)

As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,(K)
who will prepare your way before you.’[c](L)

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)

The Father Revealed in the Son(AA)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)

28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now (A)after Jesus was born in (B)Bethlehem of Judea (C)in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from (D)the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born (E)king of the Jews? For we saw (F)his star when it rose[b] and have come to (G)worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where (H)the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

(I)“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will (J)shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, (K)they offered him gifts, (L)gold and (M)frankincense and (N)myrrh. 12 And (O)being warned (P)in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, (Q)an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. (R)This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, (S)“Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Herod Kills the Children

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 (T)Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

18 (U)“A voice was heard in Ramah,
    weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they (V)are no more.”

The Return to Nazareth

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for (W)those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and (X)being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called (Y)Nazareth, (Z)so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

(AA)In those days (AB)John the Baptist came preaching in (AC)the wilderness of Judea, (AD)“Repent, for (AE)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[c] For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

(AF)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(AG)‘Prepare[d] the way of the Lord;
    make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore (AH)a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was (AI)locusts and (AJ)wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, (AK)confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of (AL)the Pharisees and (AM)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (AN)“You brood of (AO)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (AP)the wrath to come? Bear fruit (AQ)in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, (AR)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from (AS)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (AT)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 (AU)“I baptize you with water (AV)for repentance, but (AW)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you (AX)with the Holy Spirit and (AY)fire. 12 His (AZ)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and (BA)gather his wheat into the barn, (BB)but the chaff he will burn with (BC)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 (BD)Then Jesus came (BE)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 (BF)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, (BG)the heavens were opened to him,[e] and he (BH)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, (BI)a voice from heaven said, (BJ)“This is my beloved Son,[f] with whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

(BK)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (BL)to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting (BM)forty days and forty nights, he (BN)was hungry. And (BO)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are (BP)the Son of God, command (BQ)these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, (BR)“It is written,

(BS)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(BT)Then the devil took him to (BU)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

(BV)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again (BW)it is written, (BX)‘You shall not (BY)put the Lord your God to the test.’” (BZ)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, (CA)Satan! For (CB)it is written,

(CC)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and (CD)him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, (CE)angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when he heard that (CF)John had been arrested, (CG)he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving (CH)Nazareth he went and lived in (CI)Capernaum by (CJ)the sea, in the territory of (CK)Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 (CL)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 (CM)“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 (CN)the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and (CO)shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”

17 (CP)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, (CQ)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[g]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

18 (CR)While walking by (CS)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you (CT)fishers of men.”[h] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

23 (CU)And he went throughout all Galilee, (CV)teaching in their synagogues and (CW)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and (CX)healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all (CY)Syria, and (CZ)they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and (DA)pains, (DB)those oppressed by demons, (DC)those having seizures, and (DD)paralytics, and he healed them. 25 (DE)And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the (DF)Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount

Seeing the crowds, (DG)he went up on the mountain, and when he (DH)sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

And (DI)he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

(DJ)“Blessed are (DK)the poor in spirit, for (DL)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are (DM)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are the (DN)meek, for they (DO)shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are those who hunger and (DP)thirst (DQ)for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are (DR)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

“Blessed are (DS)the pure in heart, for (DT)they shall see God.

“Blessed are (DU)the peacemakers, for (DV)they shall be called (DW)sons[i] of God.

10 (DX)“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for (DY)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 (DZ)“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely (EA)on my account. 12 (EB)Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for (EC)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth, (ED)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 (EE)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 (EF)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so (EG)that[j] they may see your good works and (EH)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 (EI)“Do not think that I have come to abolish (EJ)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but (EK)to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, (EL)until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 (EM)Therefore whoever relaxes (EN)one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least (EO)in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great (EP)in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds (EQ)that of the scribes and Pharisees, you (ER)will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

21 (ES)“You have heard that it was said to those of old, (ET)‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable (EU)to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that (EV)everyone who is angry with his brother[k] will be liable (EW)to judgment; whoever insults[l] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to (EX)the hell[m] of fire. 23 (EY)So if (EZ)you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 (FA)Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, (FB)you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.[n]

Lust

27 (FC)“You have heard that it was said, (FD)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that (FE)everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 (FF)If your right eye (FG)causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into (FH)hell. 30 (FI)And if your right hand (FJ)causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into (FK)hell.

Divorce

31 (FL)“It was also said, (FM)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 (FN)But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and (FO)whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

33 “Again (FP)you have heard that it was said to those of old, (FQ)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (FR)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, (FS)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for (FT)it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is (FU)the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; (FV)anything more than this comes from evil.[o]

Retaliation

38 (FW)“You have heard that it was said, (FX)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, (FY)Do not resist the one who is evil. But (FZ)if anyone (GA)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And (GB)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[p] let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone (GC)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 (GD)Give to the one who begs from you, and (GE)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

43 (GF)“You have heard that it was said, (GG)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, (GH)Love your enemies and (GI)pray for those who persecute you, 45 (GJ)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and (GK)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (GL)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[q] what more are you doing than others? Do not even (GM)the Gentiles do the same? 48 (GN)You therefore must be (GO)perfect, (GP)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

“Beware of (GQ)practicing your righteousness before other people in order (GR)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

(GS)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may (GT)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have (GU)received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. (GV)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lord's Prayer

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love (GW)to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. (GX)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, (GY)go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. (GZ)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as (HA)the Gentiles do, for (HB)they think that they will be heard (HC)for their many words. Do not be like them, (HD)for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (HE)Pray then like this:

(HF)“Our Father in heaven,
(HG)hallowed be (HH)your name.[r]
10 (HI)Your kingdom come,
(HJ)your will be done,[s]
(HK)on earth as it is in heaven.
11 (HL)Give us (HM)this day our daily bread,[t]
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And (HN)lead us not into temptation,
    but (HO)deliver us from (HP)evil.[u]

14 (HQ)For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 (HR)but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Fasting

16 “And (HS)when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. (HT)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, (HU)anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. (HV)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 (HW)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where (HX)moth and rust[v] destroy and where thieves (HY)break in and steal, 20 (HZ)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 (IA)“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 (IB)but if (IC)your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 (ID)“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and (IE)money.[w]

Do Not Be Anxious

25 (IF)“Therefore I tell you, (IG)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 (IH)Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. (II)Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (IJ)span of life?[x] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, (IK)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, (IL)O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For (IM)the Gentiles seek after all these things, and (IN)your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But (IO)seek first (IP)the kingdom of God and his righteousness, (IQ)and all these things will be added to you.

34 (IR)“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Judging Others

(IS)“Judge not, that you be not judged. (IT)For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and (IU)with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (IV)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

(IW)“Do not give (IX)dogs what is holy, and do not throw your (IY)pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

Ask, and It Will Be Given

(IZ)“Ask, (JA)and it will be given to you; (JB)seek, and you will find; (JC)knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for (JD)bread, will give him (JE)a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, (JF)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will (JG)your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

The Golden Rule

12 “So (JH)whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is (JI)the Law and the Prophets.

13 (JJ)“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[y] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and (JK)the way is hard that leads to life, and (JL)those who find it are few.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 (JM)“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are (JN)ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them (JO)by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, (JP)every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 (JQ)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them (JR)by their fruits.

I Never Knew You

21 (JS)“Not everyone who (JT)says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will (JU)enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who (JV)does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 (JW)On that day (JX)many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not (JY)prophesy in your name, and cast out demons (JZ)in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 (KA)And then will I declare to them, ‘I (KB)never knew you; (KC)depart from me, (KD)you workers of lawlessness.’

Build Your House on the Rock

24 (KE)“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like (KF)a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like (KG)a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, (KH)the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 (KI)for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

When he came down from the mountain, (KJ)great crowds followed him. (KK)And behold, a leper[z] came to him and (KL)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus[aa] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, (KM)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (KN)show yourself to the priest and (KO)offer the gift that Moses commanded, (KP)for a proof to them.”

The Faith of a Centurion

(KQ)When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but (KR)only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant,[ab] ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, (KS)he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with (KT)no one in Israel[ac] have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, (KU)many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 (KV)while the sons of the kingdom (KW)will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place (KX)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you (KY)as you have believed.” (KZ)And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Jesus Heals Many

14 (LA)And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw (LB)his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He (LC)touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were (LD)oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits (LE)with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 (LF)This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: (LG)“He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 Now (LH)when Jesus saw a crowd around him, (LI)he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 (LJ)And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave (LK)the dead to bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms a Storm

23 (LL)And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but (LM)he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, (LN)“Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you (LO)afraid, (LP)O you of little faith?” Then he rose and (LQ)rebuked the winds and the sea, and (LR)there was a great calm. 27 And the men (LS)marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even (LT)winds and sea obey him?”

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons

28 (LU)And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes,[ad] two (LV)demon-possessed[ae] men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. 29 And behold, they (LW)cried out, “What have you to do with us, (LX)O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us (LY)before the time?” 30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had happened to the (LZ)demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, (MA)they begged him to leave their region.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to (MB)his own city. (MC)And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus (MD)saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, (ME)“Take heart, my son; (MF)your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, (MG)“This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, (MH)knowing[af] their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, (MI)they were afraid, and (MJ)they glorified God, who had (MK)given such authority to men.

Jesus Calls Matthew

(ML)As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called (MM)Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

10 And as Jesus[ag] reclined at table in the house, behold, many (MN)tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.

The Magi Visit the Messiah

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b](F)

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”[d](R)

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(AA)

In those days John the Baptist(AB) came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(AC) has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”[e](AD)

John’s(AE) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(AF) His food was locusts(AG) and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized(AH) by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(AI) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(AJ) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(AK) And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(AL) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(AM)

11 “I baptize you with[f] water for repentance.(AN) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[g] the Holy Spirit(AO) and fire.(AP) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(AQ)

The Baptism of Jesus(AR)

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(AS) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(AT) and he saw the Spirit of God(AU) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(AV) said, “This is my Son,(AW) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(AX)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(AY)

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[h](AZ) by the devil.(BA) After fasting forty days and forty nights,(BB) he was hungry. The tempter(BC) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(BD) tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[i](BE)

Then the devil took him to the holy city(BF) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,”(BG) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[j](BH)

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[k](BI)

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(BJ) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[l](BK)

11 Then the devil left him,(BL) and angels came and attended him.(BM)

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(BN) he withdrew to Galilee.(BO) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(BP) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(BQ) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[m](BR)

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(BS) has come near.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(BT)

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(BU) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(BV) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(BW) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(BX)

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(BY) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(BZ)

Jesus Heals the Sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(CA) teaching in their synagogues,(CB) proclaiming the good news(CC) of the kingdom,(CD) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(CE) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(CF) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(CG) those having seizures,(CH) and the paralyzed;(CI) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[n] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(CJ)

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes(CK)

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(CL)
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.(CM)
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.(CN)
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.(CO)
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.(CP)
Blessed are the pure in heart,(CQ)
    for they will see God.(CR)
Blessed are the peacemakers,(CS)
for they will be called children of God.(CT)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(CU)
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(CV)

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,(CW) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.(CX) 12 Rejoice and be glad,(CY) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.(CZ)

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(DA)

14 “You are the light of the world.(DB) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(DC) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(DD) that they may see your good deeds(DE) and glorify(DF) your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(DG) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(DH) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(DI) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(DJ)

Murder(DK)

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[o](DL) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(DM) with a brother or sister[p][q] will be subject to judgment.(DN) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[r] is answerable to the court.(DO) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(DP)

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[s](DQ) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(DR) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(DS) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(DT) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[t](DU) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(DV)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(DW) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(DX) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(DY) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(DZ) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(EA) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(EB) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[u](EC)

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[v](ED) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(EE) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(EF)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[w](EG) and hate your enemy.’(EH) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(EI) 45 that you may be children(EJ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(EK) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(EL) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(EM)

Giving to the Needy

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.(EN) If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(EO)

Prayer(EP)

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing(EQ) in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,(ER) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling(ES) like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.(ET) Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need(EU) before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father(EV) in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom(EW) come,
your will be done,(EX)
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.(EY)
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.(EZ)
13 And lead us not into temptation,[x](FA)
but deliver us from the evil one.[y](FB)

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.(FC) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.(FD)

Fasting

16 “When you fast,(FE) do not look somber(FF) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.(FG)

Treasures in Heaven(FH)

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,(FI) where moths and vermin destroy,(FJ) and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,(FK) where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.(FL) 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(FM)

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[z] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[aa] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.(FN)

Do Not Worry(FO)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry(FP) about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.(FQ) Are you not much more valuable than they?(FR) 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[ab]?(FS)

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor(FT) was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?(FU) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.(FV) 33 But seek first his kingdom(FW) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.(FX) 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Judging Others(FY)

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.(FZ) For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.(GA)

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Ask, Seek, Knock(GB)

“Ask and it will be given to you;(GC) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;(GD) and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts(GE) to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,(GF) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.(GG)

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate.(GH) For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

True and False Prophets

15 “Watch out for false prophets.(GI) They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.(GJ) 16 By their fruit you will recognize them.(GK) Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?(GL) 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.(GM) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.(GN) 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(GO) will enter the kingdom of heaven,(GP) but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.(GQ) 22 Many will say to me on that day,(GR) ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’(GS) 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’(GT)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(GU)

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice(GV) is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,(GW) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,(GX) 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(GY)

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy[ac](GZ) came and knelt before him(HA) and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone.(HB) But go, show yourself to the priest(HC) and offer the gift Moses commanded,(HD) as a testimony to them.”

The Faith of the Centurion(HE)

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed,(HF) suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.(HG) For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.(HH) 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,(HI) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.(HJ) 12 But the subjects of the kingdom(HK) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”(HL)

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.”(HM) And his servant was healed at that moment.

Jesus Heals Many(HN)

14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.(HO) 17 This was to fulfill(HP) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities
    and bore our diseases.”[ad](HQ)

The Cost of Following Jesus(HR)

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.(HS) 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(HT) has no place to lay his head.”

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me,(HU) and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm(HV)(HW)

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith,(HX) why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.(HY)

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men(HZ)

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[ae] two demon-possessed(IA) men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us,(IB) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”(IC)

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.(ID)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(IE)

Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(IF) Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(IG) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(IH) he said to the man, “Take heart,(II) son; your sins are forgiven.”(IJ)

At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(IK)

Knowing their thoughts,(IL) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man(IM) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(IN) who had given such authority to man.

The Calling of Matthew(IO)

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(IP) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
