18 EN aquel tiempo se llegaron los discípulos á Jesús, diciendo: ¿Quién es el mayor en el reino de los cielos?
2 Y llamando Jesús á un niño, le puso en medio de ellos,
3 Y dijo: De cierto os digo, que si no os volviereis, y fuereis como niños, no entraréis en el reino de los cielos.
4 Así que, cualquiera que se humillare como este niño, éste es el mayor en el reino de los cielos.
5 Y cualquiera que recibiere á un tal niño en mi nombre, á mí recibe.
6 Y cualquiera que escandalizare á alguno de estos pequeños que creen en mí, mejor le fuera que se le colgase al cuello una piedra de molino de asno, y que se le anegase en el profundo de la mar.
7 Ay del mundo por los escándalos! porque necesario es que vengan escándalos; mas ay de aquel hombre por el cual viene el escándalo!
8 Por tanto, si tu mano ó tu pie te fuere ocasión de caer, córtalo y echaló de ti: mejor te es entrar cojo ó manco en la vida, que teniendo dos manos ó dos pies ser echado en el fuego eterno.
9 Y si tu ojo te fuere ocasión de caer, sácalo y échalo de ti: mejor te es entrar con un solo ojo en la vida, que teniendo dos ojos ser echado en el infierno del fuego.
10 Mirad no tengáis en poco á alguno de estos pequeños; porque os digo que sus ángeles en los cielos ven siempre la faz de mi Padre que está en los cielos.
11 Porque el Hijo del hombre ha venido para salvar lo que se había perdido.
12 ¿Qué os parece? Si tuviese algún hombre cien ovejas, y se descarriase una de ellas, ¿no iría por los montes, dejadas las noventa y nueve, á buscar la que se había descarriado?
13 Y si aconteciese hallarla, de cierto os digo, que más se goza de aquélla, que de las noventa y nueve que no se descarriaron.
14 Así, no es la voluntad de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos, que se pierda uno de estos pequeños.
15 Por tanto, si tu hermano pecare contra ti, ve, y redargúyele entre ti y él solo: si te oyere, has ganado á tu hermano.
16 Mas si no te oyere, toma aún contigo uno ó dos, para que en boca de dos ó de tres testigos conste toda palabra.
17 Y si no oyere á ellos, dilo á la iglesia: y si no oyere á la iglesia, tenle por étnico y publicano.
18 De cierto os digo que todo lo que ligareis en la tierra, será ligado en el cielo; y todo lo que desatareis en la tierra, será desatado en el cielo.
19 Otra vez os digo, que si dos de vosotros se convinieren en la tierra, de toda cosa que pidieren, les será hecho por mi Padre que está en los cielos.
20 Porque donde están dos ó tres congregados en mi nombre, allí estoy en medio de ellos.
21 Entonces Pedro, llegándose á él, dijo: Señor, ¿cuántas veces perdonaré á mi hermano que pecare contra mí? ¿hasta siete?
22 Jesús le dice: No te digo hasta siete, mas aun hasta setenta veces siete.
23 Por lo cual, el reino de los cielos es semejante á un hombre rey, que quiso hacer cuentas con sus siervos.
24 Y comenzando á hacer cuentas, le fué presentado uno que le debía diez mil talentos.
25 Mas á éste, no pudiendo pagar, mandó su señor venderle, y á su mujer é hijos, con todo lo que tenía, y que se le pagase.
26 Entonces aquel siervo, postrado, le adoraba, diciendo: Señor, ten paciencia conmigo, y yo te lo pagaré todo.
27 El señor, movido á misericordia de aquel siervo, le soltó y le perdonó la deuda.
28 Y saliendo aquel siervo, halló á uno de sus consiervos, que le debía cien denarios; y trabando de él, le ahogaba, diciendo: Págame lo que debes.
29 Entonces su consiervo, postrándose á sus pies, le rogaba, diciendo: Ten paciencia conmigo, y yo te lo pagaré todo.
30 Mas él no quiso; sino fué, y le echó en la cárcel hasta que pagase la deuda.
31 Y viendo sus consiervos lo que pasaba, se entristecieron mucho, y viniendo, declararon á su señor todo lo que había pasado.
32 Entonces llamándole su señor, le dice: Siervo malvado, toda aquella deuda te perdoné, porque me rogaste:
33 ¿No te convenía también á ti tener misericordia de tu consiervo, como también yo tuve misericordia de ti?
34 Entonces su señor, enojado, le entregó á los verdugos, hasta que pagase todo lo que le debía.
35 Así también hará con vosotros mi Padre celestial, si no perdonareis de vuestros corazones cada uno á su hermano sus ofensas.

Jesus Warns of Offenses(G)
6 (H)“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of [a]offenses! For (I)offenses must come, but (J)woe to that man by whom the offense comes!
8 (K)“If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into [b]hell fire.
The Parable of the Lost Sheep(L)

If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? 13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. 14 Even so it is not the (Q)will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
Dealing with a Sinning Brother
15 “Moreover (R)if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, (S)you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that (T)‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a (U)heathen and a tax collector.
18 “Assuredly, I say to you, (V)whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19 (W)“Again[d] I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, (X)it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered (Y)together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? (Z)Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, (AA)up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 23 Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded (AB)that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ 27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.
28 “But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down [e]at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you [f]all.’ 30 And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. 32 Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! 18 En aquella ocasión, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
— ¿Quién es el más importante en el reino de los cielos?
2 Jesús llamó a un niño y, poniéndolo en medio de ellos, 3 dijo:
— Les aseguro que, si no cambian de conducta y vuelven a ser como niños, no entrarán en el reino de los cielos. 4 El más importante en el reino de los cielos es aquel que se vuelve pequeño como este niño. 5 Y el que recibe en mi nombre a un niño como este, a mí me recibe.
Los que inducen al pecado (Mc 9,42-48; Lc 17,1-2)
6 Pero a quien sea causa de pecado para uno de estos pequeños que creen en mí, más le valdría que lo arrojaran al fondo del mar con una piedra de molino atada al cuello. 7 ¡Ay del mundo a causa de los que incitan al pecado! Porque instigadores de pecado tiene que haberlos necesariamente; pero ¡ay de aquel que incite a pecar!
8 Si, pues, tu mano o tu pie van a ser causa de que caigas en pecado, córtatelos y arrójalos lejos de ti, porque es mejor que entres manco o cojo en la vida eterna que con tus dos manos y tus dos pies seas arrojado al fuego eterno. 9 Y si tu ojo va a ser causa de que caigas en pecado, sácatelo y arrójalo lejos de ti, porque es mejor que entres tuerto en la vida eterna que con tus dos ojos seas arrojado al fuego de la gehena.
10 cuídense, pues, de despreciar a alguno de estos pequeños, porque les aseguro que en el cielo sus ángeles están siempre en presencia de mi Padre celestial. 11 [Y es que el Hijo del hombre ha venido a salvar lo que estaba perdido].
Parábola de la oveja perdida (Lc 15,3-7)
12 ¿Qué les parece? Si un hombre tiene cien ovejas y se le extravía una de ellas, ¿no dejará las otras noventa y nueve en el monte e irá en busca de la extraviada? 13 Y, si logra encontrarla, les aseguro que sentirá más alegría por ella que por las noventa y nueve que no se habían extraviado. 14 De la misma manera, el Padre que está en el cielo no quiere que se pierda ni uno solo de estos pequeños.
La corrección fraterna (Lc 17,3)
15 Si alguna vez tu hermano te ofende, ve a buscarlo y habla a solas con él para hacerle ver su falta. Si te escucha, ya te lo has ganado. 16 Si no quiere escucharte, insiste llevando contigo una o dos personas más, para que el asunto se resuelva en presencia de dos o tres testigos. 17 Si tampoco les hace caso a ellos, manifiéstalo a la comunidad. Y si ni siquiera a la comunidad hace caso, tenlo por pagano o recaudador de impuestos. 18 Les aseguro que todo lo que ustedes aten en la tierra quedará atado en el cielo, y todo lo que desaten en la tierra quedará desatado en el cielo. 19 Algo les digo también: si dos de ustedes se ponen de acuerdo, aquí en la tierra, para pedir cualquier cosa, mi Padre que está en el cielo se la concederá. 20 Pues allí donde dos o tres se reúnen en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos.
Parábola del siervo que no quiso perdonar
21 Pedro, acercándose entonces a Jesús, le preguntó:
— Señor, ¿cuántas veces he de perdonar a mi hermano si me ofende? ¿Hasta siete veces?
22 Jesús le contestó:
— No te digo hasta siete veces, sino hasta setenta veces siete.
23 Y es que el reino de los cielos puede compararse a un rey que quiso hacer cuentas con la gente que tenía a su servicio. 24 Para empezar, se le presentó uno que le debía diez mil talentos. 25 Y como no tenía posibilidades de saldar su deuda, el amo mandó que los vendieran como esclavos a él, a su esposa y a sus hijos junto con todas sus propiedades, para que así saldara la deuda. 26 El siervo cayó entonces de rodillas delante de su amo, suplicándole: “Ten paciencia conmigo, que yo te lo pagaré todo”. 27 El amo tuvo compasión de su siervo; le perdonó la deuda y lo dejó ir libremente.
28 Pero, al salir, aquel siervo se encontró con uno de sus compañeros, que le debía cien denarios. Lo sujetó violentamente por el cuello y le dijo: “¡Págame lo que me debes!”. 29 Su compañero se arrodilló delante de él, suplicándole: “Ten paciencia conmigo, que yo te lo pagaré”. 30 Pero el otro no quiso escucharlo, sino que fue y lo hizo meter en la cárcel hasta que liquidara la deuda. 31 Los demás siervos, al ver todo esto, se sintieron consternados y fueron a contarle al amo lo que había sucedido. 32 Entonces el amo hizo llamar a aquel siervo y le dijo: “Siervo malvado, yo te perdoné toda aquella deuda porque me lo suplicaste; 33 en cambio tú no has querido compadecerte de tu compañero como yo me compadecí de ti”. 34 Y, encolerizado, el amo ordenó que fuera torturado hasta que toda la deuda quedara saldada. 35 Esto mismo hará mi Padre celestial con aquel de ustedes que no perdone de corazón a su hermano.

Become Like Little Children.[b] 1 At that time, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 Then Jesus beckoned a child to come to him, placed it in their midst, 3 and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself and becomes like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Woe to the World because of Scandals.[c] 5 “And whoever receives one such child in my name receives me. 6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of scandals. Such things are bound to occur, but woe to the one through whom they come.
8 [d]“If your hand or your foot is an occasion of sin for you, cut it off and throw it away. It is preferable for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. 28 “However, when that servant left, he encountered one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred denarii,[k] and, choking him, he demanded, ‘Pay me back what you owe.’ 29 His fellow servant fell to his knees and pleaded with him, saying, ‘Be patient with me and I will repay you.’ 30 But he turned a deaf ear and had him thrown into prison until he had repaid the debt.
31 “When his fellow servants observed what had happened, they were greatly upset, and, going to their master, they reported everything that had taken place. 32 Then his master sent for the man and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you for your complete debt because you begged me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in his anger his master handed him over to be tortured until he repaid the entire debt. 35 In the same way, my heavenly Father will also deal with you unless each of you forgives his brother from the heart.”

- Matthew 18:1 In this fourth collection of the sayings of Jesus, there are a good number that we have already met, and we recognize here, at times, the tone of the “Sermon on the Mount” (chs. 5–7). Everything is focused on the coming of the kingdom, but the words of Jesus now apply to the community life of the disciples. Chapter 18 is known as the “ecclesiastical discourse” because it describes the demands made by brotherhood in the Church of Jesus, which is a community of love, prayer, and forgiveness.
- Matthew 18:1 The true disciple of Jesus must renounce all ambition and become as simple and humble as a child.
- Matthew 18:5 Woe to those who give scandal to the little ones, i.e., the disciples of the Gospel, so as to make them fall. The Lord identifies himself with them and issues severe threats for those who wish to pervert them. Indeed, they have angels who always see the face of the Father in heaven—the guardian angels—thus showing their great worth in God’s eyes.
- Matthew 18:8 These verses are already to be found substantially in Mt 5:29-30; the evangelist repeats them because they have to do with “scandal.” The point is that no one can be saved who does not break completely with evil.
- Matthew 18:11 This verse is missing from the most important manuscripts and seems to have been transferred to this point from Lk 19:10.
- Matthew 18:12 In this parable, Jesus suggests what price the Father attaches to the salvation of sinners. The evangelist uses it as an appeal to the community that it may never become inhospitable to the least of believers, no matter how lost they may appear.
- Matthew 18:15 When believers live with trust in God and in communion with one another, Christ is in their midst. Doubtless, judgment is to be passed upon those who “sin,” i.e., who gravely and publicly injure the unity; but all must remain ready to forgive without measure.
- Matthew 18:22 Seventy times seven: the Greek word may also be translated “seventy-seven times.”
- Matthew 18:23 The law of pardon must ceaselessly renew the fraternal relationships in the Church. It is founded on the goodness of God who gratuitously forgives the immense sin of human beings.
- Matthew 18:24 Ten thousand talents: an enormous sum, equivalent to about 250,000 kg of silver. The Attic talent in circulation at that time was worth 6000 drachmas, and a drachma weighed about 4 gr.
- Matthew 18:28 One hundred denarii: the denarius was a Roman silver coin with the image and name of the emperor on it; it weighed about 4 gr and was the salary for a day’s work. A hundred denarii were therefore a sum 600,000 times less than the ten thousand talents.

Causing to Stumble
6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.(F) 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!(G) 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble,(H) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(I) gouge it out and throw it away. The Parable of the Wandering Sheep(K)

Dealing With Sin in the Church

If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[d](N) 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church;(O) and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.(P)

32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”(AB)
