Katanungan tungkol sa Araw ng Pamamahinga(A)

12 Isang(B) Araw ng Pamamahinga, dumaan sina Jesus sa triguhan. Nagugutom ang kanyang mga alagad noon, kaya't sila'y kumuha ng mga butil ng trigo at kumain niyon. 2 Nang makita ito ng mga Pariseo, sinabi nila sa kanya, “Tingnan mo ang ginagawa ng iyong mga alagad. Mahigpit iyang ipinagbabawal ng Kautusan sa Araw ng Pamamahinga!” 3 Sumagot(C) si Jesus, “Hindi ba ninyo nabasa ang ginawa ni David nang magutom siya at ang kanyang mga kasama? 4 Pumasok(D) siya sa bahay ng Diyos, kumain ng tinapay na handog at pinakain din niya ang kanyang mga kasama. Labag sa Kautusan ang ginawa nila sapagkat ang mga pari lamang ang may karapatang kumain niyon. 5 Hindi(E) ba ninyo nababasa sa Kautusan na tuwing Araw ng Pamamahinga, ang mga pari ay may ginagawa sa Templo na bawal gawin sa araw na iyon? Gayunma'y hindi sila nagkakasala! 6 Sinasabi ko sa inyo, may isang naririto na higit na dakila kaysa Templo. 7 Kung(F) nauunawaan lamang ninyo ang kahulugan ng mga salitang ito, ‘Habag ang nais ko at hindi handog,’ hindi sana ninyo hinatulan ang mga walang sala. 8 Sapagkat ang Anak ng Tao ay Panginoon ng Araw ng Pamamahinga.”

Pinagaling ang Lalaking Paralisado ang Kamay(G)

9 Pagkaalis ni Jesus sa pook na iyon, pumasok siya sa sinagoga. 10 May isang lalaki roon na paralisado ang isang kamay. Naroon din ang ilang taong naghahanap ng pagkakataong maparatangan si Jesus. Tinanong nila si Jesus, “Naaayon ba sa Kautusan ang magpagaling ng maysakit kung Araw ng Pamamahinga?”

11 Sumagot(H) siya, “Kung kayo'y may tupang nahulog sa balon sa Araw ng Pamamahinga, hindi ba ninyo ito iaahon? 12 Higit na mahalaga ang isang tao kaysa isang tupa! Kaya't naaayon sa Kautusan ang gumawa ng mabuti sa Araw ng Pamamahinga.”

13 Pagkatapos, sinabi ni Jesus sa lalaki, “Iunat mo ang iyong kamay.” Iniunat nga ng lalaki ang kanyang kamay at ito'y gumaling gaya ng kabilang kamay. 14 Kaya't umalis ang mga Pariseong naroroon at nag-usap-usap kung paano nila maipapapatay si Jesus.

Ang Lingkod na Hinirang

15 Nang malaman ito ni Jesus, umalis siya sa lugar na iyon. Maraming tao ang sumunod sa kanya, at pinagaling niya ang lahat ng maysakit. 16 Ngunit mahigpit niyang ipinagbilin na huwag nilang ipamalita kung sino siya. 17 Sa gayon, natupad ang sinabi ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Propeta Isaias,

18 “Narito(I) ang lingkod ko na aking hinirang,
    ang aking minamahal at lubos na kinalulugdan;
ibubuhos ko sa kanya ang aking Espiritu,
    at siya ang magpapahayag ng katarungan sa mga bansa.
19 Hindi siya makikipag-away o maninigaw,
    ni magtataas ng boses sa mga lansangan,
20 hindi niya babaliin ang tambong marupok,
    hindi rin niya papatayin ang ilawang umaandap,
hanggang katarunga'y hindi nagtatagumpay nang ganap;
21     at ang pag-asa ng mga Hentil, sa kanya ay ilalagak.”

Si Jesus at si Beelzebul(J)

22 Dinala noon kay Jesus ang isang lalaking bulag at pipi na sinasapian ng demonyo. Pinagaling siya ni Jesus kaya't siya'y nakakita at nakapagsalita. 23 Namangha ang lahat at sinabi nila, “Ito na kaya ang Anak ni David?” 24 Nang(K) marinig ito ng mga Pariseo, sinabi nila, “Nakapagpapalayas siya ng mga demonyo sa pamamagitan ng kapangyarihan ni Beelzebul, ang pinuno ng mga demonyo.” 25 Subalit alam ni Jesus ang kanilang iniisip kaya't sinabi niya, “Ang bawat kahariang naglalaban-laban ang mga mamamayan ay babagsak, at alinmang bayan o sambahayang sila-sila ang naglalaban ay mawawasak. 26 Kaya't kung si Satanas ang nagpapalayas kay Satanas, kinakalaban niya ang kanyang sarili! Kung gayon, paano pa niya mapapanatili ang kanyang kaharian? 27 Kung ako'y nagpapalayas ng mga demonyo sa kapangyarihan ni Beelzebul, sa kaninong kapangyarihan naman nagpapalayas ng demonyo ang inyong mga tagasunod? Ang ginagawa nila ang magpapatunay na maling-mali kayo. 28 Ngunit kung ako'y nagpapalayas ng mga demonyo sa kapangyarihan ng Espiritu ng Diyos, nangangahulugang dumating na sa inyo ang kaharian ng Diyos.

29 “Hindi(L) mapapasok ang bahay ng isang taong malakas kung hindi muna siya gagapusin. Kung nakagapos na siya, saka pa lamang malolooban ang bahay niya. 30 Ang(M) hindi panig sa akin ay laban sa akin, at ang hindi ko kasamang mag-ipon ay nagkakalat. 31 Kaya't sinasabi ko sa inyo, mapapatawad ang anumang kasalanan at paglapastangan, ngunit hindi patatawarin ang paglapastangan sa Espiritu Santo. 32 Sinumang(N) magsalita laban sa Anak ng Tao ay patatawarin, ngunit sinumang magsalita laban sa Espiritu Santo ay hindi patatawarin, maging sa panahong ito o sa panahong darating.”

Sa Bunga Nakikilala(O)

33 “Sinasabi(P) ninyong mabuti ang punongkahoy kung mabuti ang kanyang bunga at masama ang punongkahoy kung masama ang kanyang bunga, sapagkat sa bunga nakikilala ang puno. 34 Lahi(Q) ng mga ulupong! Paano kayong makakapagsabi ng mabubuting bagay gayong kayo'y masasama? Kung ano ang nag-uumapaw sa puso ay siyang sinasabi ng bibig. 35 Mabuti ang sinasabi ng mabuting tao, sapagkat puno ng kabutihan ang kanyang puso. Masama ang sinasabi ng masamang tao, sapagkat puno ng kasamaan ang kanyang puso.

36 “Tandaan ninyo, sa Araw ng Paghuhukom, pananagutan ng tao ang bawat walang kabuluhang salitang sinabi niya. 37 Pawawalang-sala ka, o paparusahan, batay sa iyong mga salita.”

Hinanapan si Jesus ng Palatandaan(R)

38 Sinabi(S) naman sa kanya ng ilang tagapagturo ng Kautusan at mga Pariseo, “Guro, maaari po bang magpakita kayo sa amin ng isang palatandaan?” 39 Sumagot(T) si Jesus, “Lahing masama at taksil sa Diyos! Naghahanap kayo ng palatandaan ngunit walang ipapakita sa inyo maliban sa himalang nangyari kay Propeta Jonas. 40 Kung(U) paanong si Jonas ay tatlong araw at tatlong gabing nasa tiyan ng dambuhalang isda, ang Anak ng Tao ay tatlong araw at tatlong gabi ring nasa ilalim ng lupa. 41 Sa(V) Araw ng Paghuhukom, tatayo ang mga taga-Nineve at sasaksi laban sa lahing ito, sapagkat nagsisi sila matapos pangaralan ni Jonas. Ngunit higit pa kay Jonas ang naririto. 42 Sa(W) araw na iyon, sasaksi rin ang Reyna ng Sheba laban sa lahing ito. Naglakbay siya mula pa sa dulo ng daigdig upang masaksihan ang karunungan ni Solomon, ngunit higit pa kay Solomon ang naririto ngayon!”

Ang Pagbabalik ng Masamang Espiritu(X)

43 “Kapag ang masamang espiritu ay lumabas mula sa isang tao, siya'y gumagala sa mga lupaing tigang upang maghanap ng mapagpapahingahan. Kung wala itong matagpuan 44 ay sinasabi sa sarili, ‘Babalik ako sa tahanang aking pinanggalingan.’ Pagbalik niya at makita itong walang laman, malinis at maayos, 45 aalis muna siya't magsasama pa ng pitong espiritung mas masama pa kaysa kanya at papasok sila at maninirahan doon. Dahil dito, ang kanyang magiging kalagayan ay mas masama pa kaysa dati. Ganyan ang mangyayari sa masamang lahing ito.”

Ang Ina at mga Kapatid ni Jesus(Y)

46 Habang si Jesus ay nagsasalita sa maraming tao, dumating ang kanyang ina at mga kapatid. Naghihintay sila sa labas dahil nais nila siyang makausap. [47 May nagsabi kay Jesus, “Nasa labas po ang inyong ina at mga kapatid. Ibig nila kayong makausap.”][a] 48 Ngunit sinabi niya, “Sino ang aking ina at sinu-sino ang aking mga kapatid?” 49 Itinuro niya ang kanyang mga alagad at sinabi, “Sila ang aking ina at mga kapatid. 50 Sapagkat ang sinumang sumusunod sa kalooban ng aking Ama na nasa langit, iyon ang aking ina at mga kapatid.”

Ang Katanungan tungkol sa Sabbath(A)

12 Sa pagkakataong iyon ay bumagtas sina Jesus sa bukirin ng mga trigo nang araw ng Sabbath. Inabot ng gutom ang kanyang mga alagad at sila'y nagsimulang mamitas ng mga uhay at kumain. 2 Subalit nang ito'y makita ng mga Fariseo, sinabi nila sa kanya, “Tingnan mo, ang mga alagad mo'y gumagawa ng ipinagbabawal sa araw ng Sabbath.” 3 Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Hindi ba ninyo nabasa kung ano ang ginawa ni David nang siya at ang kanyang mga kasamahan ay nagutom? 4 Hindi ba't pumasok siya sa bahay ng Diyos at kumain ng tinapay na ihinandog, na hindi nararapat ayon sa batas na kainin niya o ng mga kasamahan niya, kundi iyon ay para sa mga pari lamang? 5 O hindi ba ninyo nabasa sa Kautusan, kung paanong sa mga araw ng Sabbath ang mga pari sa loob ng templo ay hindi nagpapasaklaw sa Sabbath, subalit hindi sila itinuturing na nagkasala? 6 Ngunit sinasabi ko sa inyo, narito ang isang higit na dakila kaysa templo. 7 Kung alam lamang ninyo ang ibig sabihin nito: ‘Ang nais ko ay habag, at hindi handog,’ ay hindi ninyo sana hinatulan ang mga walang sala. 8 Sapagkat ang Anak ng Tao ay Panginoon ng Sabbath.”

Ang Lalaking Paralisado ang Isang Kamay(B)

9 Umalis doon si Jesus at pumasok sa sinagoga. 10 At naroon ang isang taong paralisado ang isang kamay. Tinanong nila si Jesus, “Ayon ba sa batas ang magpagaling ng maysakit sa araw ng Sabbath?” Itinanong nila ito upang makahanap ng maipaparatang sa kanya. 11 Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Halimbawa, kung isa sa inyo ay may tupang nahulog sa isang hukay sa araw ng Sabbath, hindi ba niya ito aabutin at iaahon? 12 Higit namang napakahalaga ng isang tao kaysa isang tupa! Kaya't naaayon sa batas ang gumawa ng mabuti sa araw ng Sabbath.” 13 At sinabi niya sa lalaki, “Iunat mo ang iyong kamay.” Iniunat nga niya ito at ito'y nanumbalik sa dati, wala nang sakit katulad ng isa. 14 Gayunma'y umalis ang mga Fariseo at nagpulong laban sa kanya at nag-usap kung paano siya papatayin. 15 Subalit alam ito ni Jesus kaya't umalis siya roon. Sumunod sa kanya ang napakaraming tao, at silang lahat ay kanyang pinagaling. 16 Ipinagbilin niya sa kanila na huwag nilang ipamamalita ang tungkol sa kanya. 17 Naganap ito bilang katuparan ng sinabi sa pamamagitan ni Propeta Isaias, na nagsasaad:

18 “Masdan ninyo ang hinirang kong lingkod,
    ang aking iniibig, na sa kanya ang kaluluwa ko'y nalulugod.
Ilalagay ko ang aking Espiritu sa kanya,
    at sa mga bansa ang katarungan ay ipahahayag niya.
19 Hindi siya makikipag-away o sisigaw man,
at walang makaririnig ng kanyang tinig sa mga lansangan.
20 Nagalusang tambo ay hindi niya babaliin,
    nagbabagang mitsa ay hindi niya papatayin,
    hanggang ang katarungan ay maihatid niya sa tagumpay;
21     at magkakaroon ng pag-asa ang mga bansa sa kanyang pangalan.”

Panlalait sa Banal na Espiritu(C)

22 Pagkatapos ay dinala kay Jesus ang isang lalaking bulag at pipi na sinasaniban ng demonyo. Kung gayo'y paano tatayo ang kanyang kaharian? 27 At kung nakapagpapalayas ako ng mga demonyo sa pamamagitan ni Beelzebul, kanino namang kapangyarihan napapalayas sila ng inyong mga tagasunod? Kaya't sila na mismo ang hahatol sa inyo. 28 Ngunit kung sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu ng Diyos ay nagpapalayas ako ng mga demonyo, kung gayon, dumating na sa inyo ang kaharian ng Diyos. 29 O paano ba mapapasok at mapagnanakawan ng sinuman ang bahay ng isang malakas na tao, kung hindi muna niya ito gagapusin? Kung magkagayon, saka pa lamang niya malolooban ang bahay nito. 30 Ang (E) wala sa panig ko ay kalaban ko, at ang hindi ko kasamang nagtitipon ay pinagmumulan ng pagkakawatak-watak. 31 Kaya't sinasabi ko sa inyo, patatawarin ang mga tao sa bawat kasalanan at panlalait, subalit ang panlalait sa Espiritu ay hindi patatawarin. 32 At (F) ang sinumang magsalita ng anuman laban sa Anak ng Tao ay patatawarin; ngunit ang sinumang magsalita laban sa Banal na Espiritu ay hindi patatawarin, sa panahon mang ito o sa darating.

Sa Bunga Nakikilala(G)

33 “Alinman sa (H) gawin ninyong mabuti ang puno at mabuti ang bunga nito o gawin ninyong masama ang puno at masama rin ang bunga nito. Sapagkat nakikilala ang puno sa pamamagitan ng bunga nito. 34 Kayong (I) lahi ng mga ulupong! Sadyang hindi kayo makapagsasalita ng mabubuting bagay sapagkat kayo'y masasama! Sapagkat kung ano ang nilalaman ng dibdib, iyon ang mamumutawi sa bibig. 35 Ang mabuting tao mula sa kanyang mabuting kayamanan ay naglalabas ng mabubuting bagay, at ang masamang tao mula sa kanyang masamang kayamanan ay naglalabas ng masasamang bagay. 36 Sinasabi ko sa inyo, pananagutan ng mga tao sa araw ng paghuhukom ang bawat salitang walang habas na binigkas. 37 Sapagkat batay sa iyong mga salita, ikaw ay mapapawalang-sala o mahahatulan.”

Ang Tanda ni Jonas(J)

38 Pagkatapos, (K) may mga guro ng Kautusan at mga Fariseo na sumagot sa kanya, “Guro, nais naming makakita mula sa iyo ng isang himala bilang tanda.” 39 Sumagot (L) siya sa kanila, “Ang isang masama at taksil na lahi ay humahanap ng mahimalang tanda; subalit walang mahimalang tanda na ibibigay sa kanya, maliban sa mahimalang tanda ng propetang si Jonas. 40 Sapagkat (M) kung paanong tatlong araw at tatlong gabi si Jonas sa loob ng tiyan ng isang dambuhalang isda, gayundin ang Anak ng Tao ay tatlong araw at tatlong gabing mapapasailalim ng lupa. 41 Tatayo ang (N) mga taga-Nineve sa paghuhukom laban sa lahing ito at hahatulan ito, sapagkat nagsisi sila nang mangaral si Jonas. At ngayon, narito ang isang mas dakila kaysa kay Jonas. 42 Ang (O) Reyna ng Timog ay tatayo sa paghuhukom laban sa lahing ito, at hahatulan ito, sapagkat nanggaling pa siya sa kadulu-duluhan ng daigdig upang makinig sa karunungan ni Solomon. At ngayon, narito ang isang mas dakila kaysa kay Solomon.

Ang Pagbabalik ng Maruming Espiritu(P)

43 “Kapag nakalabas mula sa isang tao ang karumal-dumal na espiritu, lumilibot ito sa mga tuyong lugar at naghahanap ng mapagpapahingahan, subalit wala siyang matagpuan. 44 Kaya't sinasabi niya, ‘Babalik ako sa pinanggalingan kong bahay.’ Pagdating niya roon at matagpuan iyong walang laman, nalinisan at naiayos na, 45 umaalis siya, at nagdadala pa ng pitong espiritu na mas masasama kaysa kanya, at sila'y pumapasok at naninirahan doon. Ang huling kalagayan ng taong iyon ay masahol pa kaysa una. Gayundin ang sasapitin ng masamang lahing ito.”

Ang Ina at mga Kapatid ni Jesus(Q)

46 Habang nagsasalita pa si Jesus[a] sa napakaraming tao, nakatayo sa labas ang kanyang ina at mga kapatid, hinihiling nilang siya'y makausap. 47 May nagsabi sa kanya, “Nakatayo po sa labas ang inyong ina at mga kapatid at ibig kayong makausap.”[b] 48 Sumagot si Jesus sa kanya, “Sino ba ang aking ina at sino ang aking mga kapatid?” 49 Itinuro ni Jesus ang kanyang mga alagad at sinabi niya, “Narito ang aking ina at aking mga kapatid. 50 Sapagkat sinumang gumagawa ng kalooban ng aking Ama sa langit, siya ang aking kapatid na lalaki, kapatid na babae, at ina.”

Jésus et le sabbat

12 A cette époque-là, Jésus traversa des champs de blé un jour de sabbat. Ses disciples, qui avaient faim, se mirent à arracher des épis et à manger. 2 A cette vue, les pharisiens lui dirent: «Regarde, tes disciples font ce qu'il n'est pas permis de faire pendant le sabbat[a].» 3 Mais Jésus leur répondit: «N'avez-vous pas lu ce qu’a fait David lorsqu'il a eu faim, lui et ses compagnons? 4 Il est entré dans la maison de Dieu et a mangé les pains consacrés que ni lui ni ses compagnons n'avaient le droit de manger et qui étaient réservés aux prêtres seuls! 5 Ou n'avez-vous pas lu dans la loi que, les jours de sabbat, les prêtres violent le sabbat dans le temple sans se rendre coupables? 6 Or, je vous le dis, il y a ici plus grand que le temple. 7 Si vous saviez ce que signifie: Je désire la bonté, et non les sacrifices[b], vous n'auriez pas condamné des innocents. 8 En effet, le Fils de l'homme est le Seigneur du sabbat.»

9 Jésus partit de là et entra dans la synagogue. 10 Il s'y trouvait un homme qui avait la main paralysée. Ils demandèrent à Jésus: «Est-il permis de faire une guérison le jour du sabbat?» C'était afin de pouvoir l'accuser. 11 Il leur répondit: «Lequel de vous, s'il n'a qu'une brebis et qu'elle tombe dans un trou le jour du sabbat, n'ira pas la retirer de là? 12 Or, un homme vaut beaucoup plus qu'une brebis! Il est donc permis de faire du bien les jours de sabbat.» 13 Alors il dit à l'homme: «Tends la main.» Il la tendit, et elle devint saine [comme l'autre].

Jésus, le serviteur de l’Eternel contesté

14 Les pharisiens sortirent et tinrent conseil sur les moyens de le faire mourir. 15 Jésus le sut et s'éloigna de là. Une grande foule le suivit. Il guérit tous les malades 16 et leur recommanda sévèrement de ne pas le faire connaître, 17 afin que s'accomplisse ce que le prophète Esaïe avait annoncé: 18 Voici mon serviteur que j'ai choisi, mon bien-aimé qui a toute mon approbation. Je mettrai mon Esprit sur lui, et il annoncera la justice aux nations. 19 Il ne contestera pas, il ne criera pas, et personne n'entendra sa voix dans les rues. 20 Il ne cassera pas le roseau abîmé et n'éteindra pas la mèche qui fume encore, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fait triompher la justice. 21 Les nations espéreront en son nom.[c]

22 Alors on lui amena un démoniaque aveugle et muet, et il le guérit, de sorte que le muet parlait et voyait. 23 Toute la foule disait, étonnée: «N'est-ce pas là le Fils de David[d]?»

24 Lorsque les pharisiens entendirent cela, ils dirent: «Cet homme ne chasse les démons que par Béelzébul[e], le prince des démons.» 25 Comme Jésus connaissait leurs pensées, il leur dit: «Tout royaume confronté à des luttes internes est dévasté, et aucune ville ou famille confrontée à des luttes internes ne peut subsister. 26 Si Satan chasse Satan, il lutte contre lui-même. Comment donc son royaume subsistera-t-il? 27 Et si moi, je chasse les démons par Béelzébul, vos disciples, par qui les chassent-ils? C'est pourquoi ils seront eux-mêmes vos juges. 28 Mais si c'est par l'Esprit de Dieu que je chasse les démons, alors le royaume de Dieu est venu jusqu'à vous. 29 Ou encore, comment quelqu'un peut-il entrer dans la maison d'un homme fort et piller ses biens, s'il n'a pas d'abord attaché cet homme fort? Alors seulement il pillera sa maison. 30 Celui qui n'est pas avec moi est contre moi, et celui qui ne rassemble pas avec moi disperse.

31 »C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Tout péché, tout blasphème sera pardonné aux hommes, mais le blasphème contre l'Esprit ne leur sera pas pardonné. 32 Celui qui parlera contre le Fils de l'homme, cela lui sera pardonné; mais celui qui parlera contre le Saint-Esprit, le pardon ne lui sera accordé ni dans le monde présent ni dans le monde à venir. 33 Dites que l'arbre est bon et que son fruit est bon, ou bien dites que l'arbre est mauvais et que son fruit est mauvais, car on reconnaît l'arbre à son fruit. 34 Races de vipères, comment pourriez-vous dire de bonnes choses, mauvais comme vous l'êtes? En effet, la bouche exprime ce dont le cœur est plein. 35 L'homme bon tire de bonnes choses de son bon trésor et l'homme mauvais tire de mauvaises choses de son mauvais trésor. 36 Je vous le dis: le jour du jugement, les hommes rendront compte de toute parole inutile qu'ils auront prononcée. 37 En effet, d'après tes paroles tu seras déclaré juste et d'après tes paroles tu seras condamné.»

Or, il y a ici plus que Jonas. 42 Lors du jugement, la reine du Midi[g] se lèvera avec cette génération et la condamnera, parce qu'elle est venue des extrémités de la terre pour entendre la sagesse de Salomon. Or, il y a ici plus que Salomon.

43 »Lorsqu'un esprit impur est sorti d'un homme, il va dans des endroits arides pour chercher du repos, et il n'en trouve pas. 44 Alors il dit: ‘Je retournerai dans ma maison, d'où je suis sorti.’ A son arrivée, il la trouve vide, balayée et bien rangée. 45 Alors il s'en va prendre avec lui sept autres esprits plus mauvais que lui; ils entrent dans la maison, s'y installent, et la dernière condition de cet homme est pire que la première. Il en ira de même pour cette génération mauvaise.»

46 Comme Jésus parlait encore à la foule, sa mère et ses frères, qui étaient dehors, cherchaient à lui parler. 47 [Quelqu'un lui dit: «Ta mère et tes frères sont dehors et cherchent à te parler.»] 48 Mais Jésus répondit à celui qui lui parlait: «Qui est ma mère et qui sont mes frères?» 49 Puis il tendit la main vers ses disciples et dit: «Voici ma mère et mes frères. 50 En effet, celui qui fait la volonté de mon Père céleste, celui-là est mon frère, ma sœur, ma mère.»

Lord of the Sabbath

12 At that time Jesus passed through the cornfields on the Sabbath.(A) His disciples(B) were hungry and began to pick and eat some ears of corn. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, ‘See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful(C) to do on the Sabbath.’

3 He said to them, ‘Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry: 4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate[a] the bread of the Presence – which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?(D) 5 Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?(E) 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(F) 7 If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice,(G)[b] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’(H)

The Man with the Shrivelled Hand

9 Moving on from there, he entered their synagogue.(I) 10 There he saw a man who had a shrivelled hand, and in order to accuse him they asked him, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? ’(J)

11 He replied to them, ‘Who among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?(K) 12 A person is worth far more than a sheep;(L) so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath.’

13 Then he told the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ So he stretched it out, and it was restored,(M) as good as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted against him, how they might kill him.(N)

The Servant of the Lord

15 Jesus was aware of this and withdrew. Large crowds[c] followed him, and he healed them all.(O) 16 He warned them not to make him known,(P) 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

18 Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.(Q)
19 He will not argue or shout,
and no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 He will not break a bruised reed,
and he will not put out a smouldering wick,
until he has led justice to victory.[d]
21 The nations will put their hope in his name.[e](R)

A House Divided

22 Then a demon-possessed man(S) who was blind and unable to speak was brought to him. He healed him, so that the man[f] could both speak and see.(T) 23 All the crowds were astounded and said, ‘Could this be the Son of David? ’(U)

24 When the Pharisees heard this, they said, ‘This man drives out demons only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.’(V)

25 Knowing their thoughts,(W) he told them, ‘Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 If Satan(X) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.(Y) 28 If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.(Z) 29 How can someone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions unless he first ties up(AA) the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. 30 Anyone who is not with me is against me,(AB) and anyone who does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore,(AC) I tell you, people will be forgiven every sin and blasphemy,(AD) but the blasphemy against[g] the Spirit will not be forgiven.[h] 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man,(AE) it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the one to come.(AF)

A Tree and Its Fruit

33 ‘Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad[i] and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.(AG) 34 Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow(AH) of the heart. 35 A good person produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil person produces evil things from his storeroom of evil.(AI) 36 I tell you that on the day of judgement(AJ) people will have to account(AK) for every careless[j] word they speak.[k] 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.’

The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.’(AL)

39 He answered them,(AM) ‘An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(AN) 40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish[l](AO) for three days and three nights,(AP) so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it,(AQ) because they repented at Jonah’s preaching; and look – something greater than Jonah is here.(AR) 42 The queen of the south(AS) will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look – something greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit’s Return

43 ‘When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn’t find any.(AT) 44 Then it says, “I’ll go back to my house which I came from.” Returning, it finds the house vacant, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first.(AU) That’s how it will also be with this evil generation.’

True Relationships

46 While he(AV) was still speaking with the crowds, his mother and brothers were standing outside wanting to speak to him.(AW) 47 Someone told him, ‘Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.’[m]

48 He replied to the one who was speaking to him, ‘Who is my mother and who are my brothers? ’ 49 Stretching out his hand towards his disciples,(AX) he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’(AY)

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)(B)

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(C) and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(D)

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(E) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(F) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(G) and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(H) 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[a](I) you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man(J) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(K) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(L)

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(M) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(N) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(O)

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(P) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(Q) 17 This was to fulfill(R) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;(S)
I will put my Spirit on him,(T)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”[b](U)

Jesus and Beelzebul(V)

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(W) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(X)

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(Y) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(Z)

25 Jesus knew their thoughts(AA) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(AB) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(AC) by whom do your people(AD) drive them out? 29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(AF) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(AG) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(AH) or in the age to come.(AI)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(AJ) 34 You brood of vipers,(AK) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(AL) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(AM)

The Sign of Jonah(AN)(AO)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(AP) from you.”(AQ)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(AR) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(AS) so the Son of Man(AT) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(AU) 41 The men of Nineveh(AV) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(AW) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(AX) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(AY) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(AZ)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(BA) and brothers(BB) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(BC) is my brother and sister and mother.”
