Jesus inför Pilatus

15 (A) Redan tidigt på morgonen tog översteprästerna sitt beslut tillsammans med de äldste och de skriftlärda, hela Stora rådet. De band Jesus och förde bort honom och utlämnade honom till Pilatus[a].

2 (B) Pilatus frågade honom: "Så du är judarnas kung?" Jesus svarade: "Du själv säger det." 3 Översteprästerna anklagade honom häftigt, 4 och Pilatus frågade honom på nytt: "Svarar du inte? Du hör hur mycket de anklagar dig för." 5 Men Jesus svarade inget mer, och Pilatus var förundrad.

6 (C) Vid högtiden brukade Pilatus frige en fånge, den som de begärde. 7 Där fanns nu en man som hette Barabbas. Han satt fängslad tillsammans med andra upprorsmän som hade begått mord under oroligheterna. 8 När folket kom fram och började be honom göra som han brukade för dem, 9 (D) svarade Pilatus: "Vill ni att jag friger judarnas kung åt er?" 10 Han förstod nämligen att det var av avund som översteprästerna hade utlämnat honom.

11 (E) Men översteprästerna hetsade folket till att i stället be att få Barabbas fri. 12 Pilatus frågade dem än en gång: "Vad ska jag då göra med honom som ni kallar judarnas kung?" 13 De skrek tillbaka: "Korsfäst honom!" 14 Pilatus frågade dem: "Vad har han gjort för ont?" Men de skrek ännu högre: "Korsfäst honom!" 15 (F) Och eftersom Pilatus ville göra folket till viljes, släppte han Barabbas och lät gissla[b] Jesus och utlämnade honom sedan till att korsfästas.

Jesus hånas och misshandlas

16 (G) Soldaterna förde in Jesus på gården, det vill säga pretoriet, och sammankallade hela vaktstyrkan. 17 (H) De klädde honom i en purpurmantel[c] och vred ihop en törnekrona och satte den på honom. 18 Sedan började de hälsa honom: "Leve judarnas kung!" 19 (I) De slog honom i huvudet med en käpp, spottade på honom och böjde knä och tillbad honom.

20 När de hade hånat honom, tog de av honom purpurmanteln och klädde honom i hans egna kläder. Sedan förde de ut honom för att korsfästas.

Jesus blir korsfäst

21 (J) De hejdade en man som just kom in från landet, Simon från Kyrene, far till Alexander och Rufus[d]. Honom tvingade de att bära Jesu kors. 22 (K) Och de förde Jesus till den plats som kallas Golgata, som betyder Dödskalleplatsen. 23 (L) De försökte ge honom vin blandat med myrra[e], men han tog inte emot det. 24 (M) Och de korsfäste honom och delade hans kläder[f] mellan sig genom att kasta lott om vad var och en skulle få. 25 Det var vid tredje timmen som de korsfäste honom. 26 På anslaget med anklagelsen mot honom stod det skrivet: "Judarnas kung".

27 (N) Tillsammans med honom korsfäste de två rövare, den ene på hans högra sida och den andre på hans vänstra.[g] 29 (O) De som gick förbi hånade honom och skakade på huvudet och sade: "Ha! Du som river templet och bygger upp det på tre dagar, 30 fräls dig själv och kom ner från korset!" 31 På samma sätt förlöjligade översteprästerna och de skriftlärda honom och sade till varandra: "Andra har han frälst, sig själv kan han inte frälsa. 32 Han är Messias, Israels kung! Nu får han komma ner från korset, så att vi får se det och tro!" Också de som var korsfästa tillsammans med honom hånade honom.

Jesus dör

33 (P) Vid sjätte timmen kom ett mörker över hela landet[h] som varade fram till nionde timmen.[i] 34 (Q) Vid nionde timmen ropade Jesus med hög röst: "Elohi! Elohi! Lema sabaktani?" Det betyder: "Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergett mig?"[j]

35 Några av dem som stod där hörde det och sade: "Hör, han ropar på Elia!" 36 (R) En av dem sprang och fyllde en svamp med ättikvin, fäste den runt en käpp och gav honom att dricka och sade: "Vänta, så får vi se om Elia kommer och tar ner honom." 37 Men Jesus ropade med hög röst och gav sedan upp andan.

38 (S) Då brast förhänget[k] i templet i två delar, uppifrån och ända ner. 39 När officeren som stod framför honom såg att han gav upp andan på det sättet, sade han: "Den mannen var verkligen Guds Son!"

40 (T) Även några kvinnor stod på avstånd och såg på. Bland dem var Maria Magdalena och den Maria som var Jakob den yngres och Joses mor, samt Salome. 41 De hade följt Jesus medan han var i Galileen och tjänat honom. Där fanns också många andra kvinnor som hade gått med honom upp till Jerusalem.

Jesus begravs

42 (U) Det var nu redan kväll. Eftersom det var förberedelsedag[l], dagen före sabbaten, 43 kom Josef från Arimatea[m] dit. Han var en ansedd rådsherre som också väntade på Guds rike. Han tog mod till sig och gick in till Pilatus och bad att få Jesu kropp. 44 Pilatus blev förvånad över att Jesus redan skulle ha dött och kallade till sig officeren och frågade honom om Jesus varit död länge. 45 När han fick det bekräftat av officeren, lät han Josef få den döda kroppen.

46 Josef köpte då linnetyg, tog ner honom och svepte honom i linnetyget och lade honom i en grav som var uthuggen i klippan. Sedan rullade han en sten för ingången till graven. 47 Maria Magdalena och Maria, Joses mor, såg var han blev lagd.

Det judiska rådet vill se Jesus dömd till döden

(Matt 27:1-2; 27:11-14; Luk 23:1-5; Joh 18:28-38)

15 Tidigt nästa morgon samlades översteprästerna och folkets ledare och de skriftlärda – hela rådet[a] – och fattade ett beslut. Sedan lät de binda Jesus och förde bort honom och överlämnade honom till Pilatus.[b]

Jesus förhörs av Pilatus

2 Pilatus frågade honom: ”Är du judarnas kung?” Men Jesus svarade: ”Det är du själv som säger det.”

3 Sedan anklagade översteprästerna honom för en rad olika brott, 4 och Pilatus frågade honom: ”Varför säger du ingenting? Du hör ju hur mycket de anklagar dig för!”

5 Men till Pilatus stora förvåning svarade Jesus inget mer.

Pilatus dömer Jesus till döden

(Matt 27:15-26; Luk 23:13-25; Joh 18:39—19:16)

6 Vid påskhögtiden brukade Pilatus alltid frige en fånge åt dem, vem som helst som de ville ha fri. 7 Just då satt en man fängslad som hette Barabbas. Han hade tillsammans med några andra begått mord under ett uppror.

8 Folket började nu samlas inför Pilatus för att be honom göra som han brukade.

9 ”Vill ni att jag ska släppa judarnas kung?” frågade Pilatus. 10 Han visste mycket väl att översteprästerna hade överlämnat Jesus åt honom för att de var avundsjuka på Jesus.

11 Men översteprästerna hetsade upp folket och fick dem att kräva att Barabbas skulle friges istället.

12 Pilatus frågade då igen: ”Vad ska jag då göra med den här mannen som ni kallar judarnas kung?”

13 ”Korsfäst honom!” ropade de tillbaka.

14 ”Men vad har han gjort för ont?” frågade Pilatus.

Då ropade de ännu högre: ”Korsfäst honom!” 15 Till slut gav Pilatus efter och släppte Barabbas, eftersom han ville göra som folket krävde. Men Jesus lät han piska och överlämnade honom sedan till att korsfästas.

De romerska soldaterna hånar Jesus

(Matt 27:27-31; Joh 19:2-3)

16 Soldaterna ledde först in Jesus på gården till landshövdingens residens, där hela vaktstyrkan kallades samman. 17 De klädde på honom en purpurröd[c] mantel och vred ihop en krona av törnen som de satte på honom. 18 ”Leve judarnas kung!” ropade de. 19 De slog honom i huvudet med en käpp, spottade på honom och föll på knä för att hylla honom.

20 Efter att ha hånat honom tog de av honom den purpurröda manteln, satte på honom hans egna kläder och förde bort honom för att korsfästas.

Jesus korsfästs

(Matt 27:32-44; Luk 23:26-43; Joh 19:17-24)

21 En man, Simon från Kyrene[d], far till Alexandros och Rufus, var på väg in från landsbygden, och honom tvingade de att bära Jesus kors.

22 De förde Jesus till den plats som kallas Golgota (vilket betyder Skalleplatsen). 23 Där gav man honom vin blandat med myrra,[e] men han ville inte ha det. 24 Sedan korsfäste de honom och delade hans kläder mellan sig genom att kasta lott om dem.

25 Klockan var runt nio på morgonen[f] när han korsfästes. 26 Ovanför honom hade man satt upp en skylt med texten: Judarnas kung, för att visa vad han anklagades för.

27 Samtidigt med Jesus blev också två brottslingar korsfästa, en på var sida om honom.[g] 29 Och de som gick förbi hånade Jesus och skakade på huvudet och sa: ”Se där ja! Var det inte du som skulle riva ner templet och bygga upp det igen på tre dagar? 30 Rädda dig själv nu och kliv ner från korset!”

31 Även översteprästerna och de skriftlärda gjorde sig lustiga över honom och sa till varandra:

”Han var bra på att rädda andra, men han kan inte rädda sig själv! 32 Skulle han vara Messias, Israels kung? Ja, om vi får se honom kliva ner från korset, då ska vi tro på honom!”

Också de som var korsfästa tillsammans med honom hånade honom.

Jesus dör på korset

(Matt 27:45-56; Luk 23:44-49; Joh 19:28-30)

33 När klockan var tolv blev det mörkt över hela jorden, och mörkret varade ända fram till klockan tre. 34 Vid tretiden ropade Jesus med hög röst: ”Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachtani?” (det betyder: ”Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergett mig?”)[h]

35 Några av dem som stod där i närheten hörde det och sa: ”Hör, han ropar på Elia!” 36 En av dem sprang bort och fyllde en svamp med surt vin, och satte den på en käpp och höll upp den så att han kunde dricka. ”Låt oss se om Elia kommer och tar ner honom!”, sa han.

37 Men Jesus ropade högt och slutade att andas[i]. 38 Då brast förhänget i templet[j] i två delar, uppifrån och ända ned.

39 När den romerska officeren, som stod framför honom, såg på vilket sätt Jesus gav upp andan, ropade han: ”Den mannen var verkligen Guds Son!”

44 Pilatus hade svårt att tro att Jesus redan var död, så han kallade till sig officeren för att fråga honom om Jesus verkligen redan hade dött. 45 När officeren bekräftade det, lät han Josef ta kroppen.

46 Josef köpte linnetyg, tog ner Jesus, lindade honom i tyget och lade honom i en grav som var uthuggen i berget. Sedan rullade han en sten framför ingången till graven. 47 Både Maria från Magdala och Maria, Joses mor, såg var Jesus kropp lades.

Jesus Before Pilate

15 (A)And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole (B)Sanhedrin, immediately held council; and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 (C)And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and *said, “You yourself say it.” 3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. 4 Then Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, “You answer nothing? See how many accusations they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate marveled.

6 (E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they shouted again, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? Jesus Is Mocked

16 (H)So the soldiers took Him away into (I)the [a]palace (that is, the [b]Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [c](J)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they *put it on Him; 18 and they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they kept beating His head with a [d]reed, and spitting on Him; and kneeling, they were bowing down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (K)And they *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the countryside, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to [e]carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [f]lots for them to decide who should take what. 25 Now it was the [g](Q)third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against Him [h]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [i][And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (S)shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the [j]sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “(U)He saved others; [k]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this [l]Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (AJ)And when evening had already come, because it was [u](AK)Preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent [v]Council member, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate wondered if He had died by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He already died. 45 And ascertaining this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 And when Joseph had bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AP)And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He had been laid.

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)

2 “Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

5 But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.

6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(I) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(J)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(K) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(L) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(M) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(N)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(O) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(P) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Q) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(R) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(S) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(T)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(U) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(V) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(W) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(X) this king of Israel,(Y) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Z)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(AA) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](AB)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(AC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(AD)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(AE) 39 And when the centurion,(AF) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(AG)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(AH) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(AI) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(AJ)

The Burial of Jesus(AK)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(AL) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(AM) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AN) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AO) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AQ) saw where he was laid.
