A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (A)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (B)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (C)God will also glorify him in himself, and (D)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (E)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (F)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (G)A new commandment (H)I give to you, (I)that you love one another: (J)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (K)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (L)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (M)you cannot follow me now, (N)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (O)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 (Q)“Let not your hearts be troubled. (R)Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. In (S)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that (T)I go to prepare a place for you?[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you (U)to myself, that (V)where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] (W)Thomas said to him, “Lord, (X)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am (Y)the way, and (Z)the truth, and (AA)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (AB)If you had known me, you would have (AC)known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and (AD)have seen him.”

(AE)Philip said to him, “Lord, (AF)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (AG)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (AH)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (AL)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (AM)am going to the Father. 13 (AN)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (AO)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (AP)If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

And (BO)the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the (BP)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (BQ)whom the Father will send in my name, (BR)he will teach you all things and (BS)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 (BT)Peace I leave with you; (BU)my peace I give to you. (BV)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither (BW)let them be afraid. 28 (BX)You heard me say to you, (BY)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I (BZ)am going to the Father, for (CA)the Father is greater than I. 29 And (CB)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for (CC)the ruler of this world is coming. (CD)He has no claim on me, 31 but I do (CE)as the Father has commanded me, (CF)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

34 “A new command(G) I give you: Love one another.(H) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(I) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(J)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(K)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(L) but you will follow later.”(M)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(N)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(O) You believe(P) in God[b];(Q) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(R) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(S) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(T) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(U) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(V) the way(W) and the truth(X) and the life.(Y) No one comes to the Father except through me.(Z) If you really know me, you will know[c] my Father as well.(AA) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(AB) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(AC) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(AD) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(AE) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(AF) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(AG) in me will do the works I have been doing,(AH) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(AI) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(AJ) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(AK) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(AL) The world cannot accept him,(AM) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[d] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(AN) I will come to you.(AO) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(AP) Because I live, you also will live.(AQ) 20 On that day(AR) you will realize that I am in my Father,(AS) and you are in me, and I am in you.(AT) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(AU) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(AV) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(AW) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(AX)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(AY) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(AZ) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(BA)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(BB) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(BC) will teach you all things(BD) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(BE) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(BF) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(BG) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(BH) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(BI) for the Father is greater than I.(BJ) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(BK) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(BL) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(BM)

“Come now; let us leave.
