Jesús ante Pilato

(Mt. 27.1-2,11-14; Lc. 23.1-5; Jn. 18.28-38)

15 Muy de mañana, habiendo tenido consejo los principales sacerdotes con los ancianos, con los escribas y con todo el concilio, llevaron a Jesús atado, y le entregaron a Pilato. 2 Pilato le preguntó: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos? Respondiendo él, le dijo: Tú lo dices. 3 Y los principales sacerdotes le acusaban mucho. 4 Otra vez le preguntó Pilato, diciendo: ¿Nada respondes? Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan. 5 Mas Jesús ni aun con eso respondió; de modo que Pilato se maravillaba.

Jesús sentenciado a muerte

(Mt. 27.15-31; Lc. 23.13-25; Jn. 18.38—19.16)

6 Ahora bien, en el día de la fiesta les soltaba un preso, cualquiera que pidiesen. 7 Y había uno que se llamaba Barrabás, preso con sus compañeros de motín que habían cometido homicidio en una revuelta. 8 Y viniendo la multitud, comenzó a pedir que hiciese como siempre les había hecho. 9 Y Pilato les respondió diciendo: ¿Queréis que os suelte al Rey de los judíos? 10 Porque conocía que por envidia le habían entregado los principales sacerdotes. 11 Mas los principales sacerdotes incitaron a la multitud para que les soltase más bien a Barrabás. 12 Respondiendo Pilato, les dijo otra vez: ¿Qué, pues, queréis que haga del que llamáis Rey de los judíos? 13 Y ellos volvieron a dar voces: ¡Crucifícale! 14 Pilato les decía: ¿Pues qué mal ha hecho? Pero ellos gritaban aún más: ¡Crucifícale! 15 Y Pilato, queriendo satisfacer al pueblo, les soltó a Barrabás, y entregó a Jesús, después de azotarle, para que fuese crucificado.

16 Entonces los soldados le llevaron dentro del atrio, esto es, al pretorio, y convocaron a toda la compañía. 17 Y le vistieron de púrpura, y poniéndole una corona tejida de espinas, 18 comenzaron luego a saludarle: ¡Salve, Rey de los judíos! 19 Y le golpeaban en la cabeza con una caña, y le escupían, y puestos de rodillas le hacían reverencias. 20 Después de haberle escarnecido, le desnudaron la púrpura, y le pusieron sus propios vestidos, y le sacaron para crucificarle.

Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

(Mt. 27.32-56; Lc. 23.26-49; Jn. 19.17-30)

21 Y obligaron a uno que pasaba, Simón de Cirene, padre de Alejandro y de Rufo,(A) que venía del campo, a que le llevase la cruz. 22 Y le llevaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que traducido es: Lugar de la Calavera. 23 Y le dieron a beber vino mezclado con mirra; mas él no lo tomó. 24 Cuando le hubieron crucificado, repartieron entre sí sus vestidos, echando suertes sobre ellos(B) para ver qué se llevaría cada uno. 25 Era la hora tercera cuando le crucificaron. 26 Y el título escrito de su causa era: EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS. 27 Crucificaron también con él a dos ladrones, uno a su derecha, y el otro a su izquierda. 28 Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Y fue contado con los inicuos.(C) 29 Y los que pasaban le injuriaban, meneando la cabeza(D) y diciendo: ¡Bah! tú que derribas el templo de Dios, y en tres días lo reedificas,(E) 30 sálvate a ti mismo, y desciende de la cruz. 31 De esta manera también los principales sacerdotes, escarneciendo, se decían unos a otros, con los escribas: A otros salvó, a sí mismo no se puede salvar. 32 El Cristo, Rey de Israel, descienda ahora de la cruz, para que veamos y creamos. También los que estaban crucificados con él le injuriaban.

33 Cuando vino la hora sexta, hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora novena. 34 Y a la hora novena Jesús clamó a gran voz, diciendo: Eloi, Eloi, ¿lama sabactani? que traducido es: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?(F) 35 Y algunos de los que estaban allí decían, al oírlo: Mirad, llama a Elías. 36 Y corrió uno, y empapando una esponja en vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, le dio a beber,(G) diciendo: Dejad, veamos si viene Elías a bajarle. 37 Mas Jesús, dando una gran voz, expiró. 38 Entonces el velo(H) del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo. 39 Y el centurión que estaba frente a él, viendo que después de clamar había expirado así, dijo: Verdaderamente este hombre era Hijo de Dios.

40 También había algunas mujeres mirando de lejos, entre las cuales estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo el menor y de José, y Salomé, 41 quienes, cuando él estaba en Galilea, le seguían y le servían;(I) y otras muchas que habían subido con él a Jerusalén.

Jesús es sepultado

(Mt. 27.57-61; Lc. 23.50-56; Jn. 19.38-42)

42 Cuando llegó la noche, porque era la preparación, es decir, la víspera del día de reposo,[a] 43 José de Arimatea, miembro noble del concilio, que también esperaba el reino de Dios, vino y entró osadamente a Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. 44 Pilato se sorprendió de que ya hubiese muerto; y haciendo venir al centurión, le preguntó si ya estaba muerto. 45 E informado por el centurión, dio el cuerpo a José, 46 el cual compró una sábana, y quitándolo, lo envolvió en la sábana, y lo puso en un sepulcro que estaba cavado en una peña, e hizo rodar una piedra a la entrada del sepulcro. 47 Y María Magdalena y María madre de José miraban dónde lo ponían.

Jesus Before Pilate(A)

15 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law(B) and the whole Sanhedrin,(C) made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.(D)

2 “Are you the king of the Jews?”(E) asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”

5 But Jesus still made no reply,(F) and Pilate was amazed.

6 Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

9 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”(G) asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas(H) instead.

12 “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

13 “Crucify him!” they shouted.

14 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged,(I) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(J)

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(K) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(L) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(M) to crucify him.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(N)

21 A certain man from Cyrene,(O) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(P) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(Q) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(R) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(S) to see what each would get.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(T)

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(U) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(V) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(W) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(X) this king of Israel,(Y) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Z)

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(AA) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](AB)

35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(AC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(AD)

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(AE) 39 And when the centurion,(AF) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(AG)

40 Some women were watching from a distance.(AH) Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph,[d] and Salome.(AI) 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.(AJ)

The Burial of Jesus(AK)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(AL) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(AM) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(AN) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(AO) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(AP) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(AQ) saw where he was laid.

15 Al amanecer, habiéndose reunido a deliberar los jefes de los sacerdotes, junto con los ancianos, los maestros de la ley y el Consejo Supremo en pleno, llevaron atado a Jesús y se lo entregaron a Pilato. 2 Pilato le preguntó:

— ¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?

Jesús le contestó:

— Tú lo dices.

3 Los jefes de los sacerdotes no dejaban de acusarlo; 4 así que Pilato le preguntó otra vez:

— ¿No respondes nada? ¡Mira cómo te están acusando!

5 Pero Jesús no contestó, de manera que Pilato se quedó extrañado.

Jesús sentenciado a muerte (Mt 27,15-26; Lc 23,13-25; Jn 18,39-40; 19,1.4-16)

6 En la fiesta de la Pascua, Pilato concedía la libertad a un preso, el que le pidieran. 7 Había entonces un preso llamado Barrabás que, junto con otros sediciosos, había cometido un asesinato en un motín. 8 Cuando llegó la gente y se pusieron a pedir a Pilato que hiciera como tenía por costumbre, 9 Pilato les contestó:

— ¿Quieren que les ponga en libertad al rey de los judíos?

10 Pues se daba cuenta de que los jefes de los sacerdotes se lo habían entregado por envidia. 11 Pero estos incitaron a la gente para que les soltara a Barrabás. 12 Pilato les preguntó de nuevo:

— ¿Y qué quieren que haga con el que ustedes llaman rey de los judíos?

13 Ellos gritaron:

— ¡Crucifícalo!

14 Pilato preguntó:

— Pues ¿cuál es su delito?

Pero ellos gritaban más y más:

— ¡Crucifícalo!

15 Entonces Pilato, queriendo contentar a la gente, ordenó que pusieran en libertad a Barrabás y les entregó a Jesús para que lo azotaran y lo crucificaran.

Los soldados se burlan de Jesús (Mt 27,27-31; Jn 19,2-3)

16 Los soldados llevaron a Jesús al interior del palacio, es decir, al pretorio. Reunieron allí a toda la tropa, 17 le pusieron un manto de púrpura y una corona de espinas en la cabeza, 18 y empezaron a saludarlo:

— ¡Viva el rey de los judíos!

19 Le golpeaban la cabeza con una caña, lo escupían y, poniéndose de rodillas ante él, le hacían reverencias. 20 Después de haberse burlado de él, le quitaron el manto de púrpura, lo vistieron con su propia ropa y lo sacaron de allí para crucificarlo.

Jesús es crucificado (Mt 27,32-44; Lc 23,26-43; Jn 19,17-27)

21 Y a uno que pasaba por allí al volver del campo, a un tal Simón, natural de Cirene, padre de Alejandro y Rufo, lo obligaron a cargar con la cruz de Jesús. 22 Llevaron a Jesús a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa lugar de la Calavera. 23 Allí le dieron vino mezclado con mirra, pero él lo rechazó. 24 A continuación lo crucificaron y los soldados se repartieron sus ropas echándolas a suertes, para ver con qué se quedaba cada uno. 25 Eran las nueve de la mañana cuando lo crucificaron. 26 Y había un letrero en el que estaba escrito el motivo de la condena: “El rey de los judíos”. 27 Al mismo tiempo que a Jesús, crucificaron a dos ladrones, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. 28 [Así se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Fue incluido entre los criminales].

31 De igual manera los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley se burlaban de él diciéndose unos a otros:

— Ha salvado a otros, pero no puede salvarse a sí mismo. 32 ¡Que baje ahora mismo de la cruz ese mesías, ese rey de Israel, para que lo veamos y creamos en él!

Los otros que estaban crucificados junto a él, también lo llenaban de insultos.

Muerte de Jesús (Mt 27,45-56; Lc 23,44-49; Jn 19,28-30)

33 Al llegar el mediodía, la tierra entera quedó sumida en oscuridad hasta las tres de la tarde. 34 A esa hora Jesús gritó con fuerza:

— ¡Eloí, Eloí! ¿lemá sabaqtaní? (que significa: “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?”).

35 Lo oyeron algunos de los que estaban allí y comentaron:

— Miren, está llamando a Elías.

36 Uno de ellos fue corriendo a empapar una esponja en vinagre, y con una caña se la acercó a Jesús para que bebiera, diciendo:

— Dejen, a ver si viene Elías a librarlo.

37 Pero Jesús, lanzando un fuerte grito, murió.

38 Entonces la cortina del Templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo. 39 El comandante de la guardia, que estaba frente a Jesús, al ver cómo había muerto, dijo:

— ¡Verdaderamente, este hombre era Hijo de Dios!

40 Había también algunas mujeres contemplándolo todo desde lejos. Entre ellas se encontraban María Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago el Menor y de José, y Salomé; 41 eran las que, cuando Jesús estaba en Galilea, lo habían seguido y atendido. Y había también otras muchas que habían venido con él a Jerusalén.

See how many accusations they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate marveled.

6 (E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they shouted again, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil did He do?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (H)So the soldiers took Him away into (I)the [a]palace (that is, the [b]Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [c](J)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they *put it on Him; 18 and they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they kept beating His head with a [d]reed, and spitting on Him; and kneeling, they were bowing down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (K)And they *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the countryside, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to [e]carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [f]lots for them to decide who should take what. 25 Now it was the [g](Q)third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against Him [h]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [i][And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (S)shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the [j]sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “(U)He saved others; [k]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this [l]Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

Jesus Is Buried
