Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 (A)And he came out and went, (B)as was his custom, to (C)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (D)And when he came to (E)the place, he said to them, (F)“Pray that you may not (G)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (H)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (I)“Father, if you are willing, remove (J)this cup from me. (K)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (L)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (M)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[a] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (N)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (O)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (P)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (Q)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[b] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (R)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (S)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (T)your hour, and (U)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 (V)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (W)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (X)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (Y)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (Z)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (AA)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (AB)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (AC)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 (AD)Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. 64 (AE)They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, (AF)“Prophesy! (AG)Who is it that struck you?” 65 And they said many other things against him, (AH)blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 (AI)When day came, (AJ)the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their (AK)council, and they (AL)said, 67 (AM)“If you are (AN)the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated (AO)at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 So they all said, “Are you (AP)the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, (AQ)“You say that I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

Jesus Before Pilate

23 (AR)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man (AS)misleading our nation and (AT)forbidding us to give tribute to (AU)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, (AV)a king.” (AW)And Pilate asked him, (AX)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (AY)“You have said so.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, (AZ)“I find no guilt in this man.” But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, (BA)from Galilee even to this place.”

Jesus Before Herod

When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he belonged to (BB)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, (BC)for he had long desired to see him, (BD)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping (BE)to see some sign done by him. So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers (BF)treated him with contempt and (BG)mocked him. Then, (BH)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 And (BI)Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.

13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and (BJ)the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man (BK)as one who was misleading the people. And (BL)after examining him before you, behold, I (BM)did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither did Herod, for (BN)he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 (BO)I will therefore punish and release him.”[c]

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

18 (BP)But they all cried out together, (BQ)“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and (BR)for murder. 20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22 A third time he said to them, “Why? (BS)What evil has he done? (BT)I have found in him no guilt deserving death. (BU)I will therefore punish and release him.” 23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison (BV)for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, (BW)but he delivered Jesus over to their will.

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so (B)far from saving me, from the words of my (C)groaning?
O my God, I cry by (D)day, but you do not answer,
    and by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are (E)holy,
    (F)enthroned on (G)the praises[a] of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they (H)cried and were rescued;
    in you they (I)trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am (J)a worm and not a man,
    (K)scorned by mankind and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me (M)mock me;
    they make mouths at me; they (N)wag their heads;
(O)“He trusts in the Lord; let him (P)deliver him;
    let him rescue him, for he (Q)delights in him!”

Yet you are he who (R)took me from the womb;
    you made me trust you at my mother's breasts.
10 On you was I cast from my birth,
    and from (S)my mother's womb you have been my God.
11 Be not (T)far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is (U)none to help.

12 Many bulls encompass me;
    (V)strong bulls of (W)Bashan surround me;
13 they (X)open wide their mouths at me,
    like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am (Y)poured out like water,
    and all my bones are (Z)out of joint;
my (AA)heart is like (AB)wax;
    it is melted within my breast;
15 my strength is (AC)dried up like a potsherd,
    and my (AD)tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For (AE)dogs encompass me;
    a company of evildoers (AF)encircles me;
they have (AG)pierced my hands and feet[b]
17 I can count all my bones—
they (AH)stare and gloat over me;
18 (AI)they divide my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But you, O Lord, (AJ)do not be far off!
    O you my help, (AK)come quickly to my aid!
