²³ save others by snatching them from the fire;^(A) to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.^[a](B)

¹⁶ Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save^(A) both yourself and your hearers.

³³ Do not be misled:^(A) “Bad company corrupts good character.”^[a](B)

² The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you,^(A) Satan! The Lord, who has chosen^(B) Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick^(C) snatched from the fire?”^(D)

³ Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. ⁴ The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”

Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin,^(E) and I will put fine garments^(F) on you.”

⁵ Then I said, “Put a clean turban^(G) on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.

¹⁰ Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation^(A) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. ¹¹ See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,^(B) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. ¹² So even though I wrote to you,^(C) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong^(D) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.

¹⁵ If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.^(A)
