Chapter 5
The Circumcision at Gilgal. 1 When all of the Amorite kings on the west side of the Jordan and all of the Canaanite kings who lived along the coast heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had passed over it, they grew fainthearted and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.
2 [a]It was at that time that the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives for yourself and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth. 4 This is the reason why Joshua had to perform this circumcision. All of the men who had come out of Egypt, all of the fighting men, had died in the wilderness on their way from Egypt. 5 All of the men who had come out had been circumcised, but all of those who had been born in the wilderness on the way from Egypt had not been circumcised. 6 The Israelites had spent forty years in the wilderness until all of the fighting men who had come out of Egypt and who had not obeyed the command of the Lord had died. The Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land that he had promised to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 It was their children, whom he had raised up in their stead, whom Joshua circumcised, for they were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 When he had finished circumcising the whole nation, they remained where they were until they recovered. 9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” So this site has been called Gilgal up to the present.
10 [b]On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while they were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated Passover. 11 The day after Passover, the very next day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and parched grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after they had eaten the produce of the land. There was no more manna for the Israelites, but that same year they ate the produce of the land of Canaan.
13 Worship at Jericho.[c] As Joshua drew near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” 14 He answered, “Neither. I, the commander of the army of the Lord, have now arrived.” Joshua fell to the ground, face first, and worshiped him. He said, “What does my lord bid of his servant?” 15 The commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, “Take your shoes off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Joshua did this.

- Joshua 5:2 Circumcision was required of those who would celebrate the Passover, according to the prescriptions in Ex 12:43-48.
- Joshua 5:10 The celebration of Passover, the memorial of God’s intervention for the salvation of his people, accompanies the decisive moments in the history of Israel. Thus it marks the moment of the departure from Egypt (Ex 12–13), the moment of the departure from Sinai (Num 9), and now the moment when Israel enters into possession of the Promised Land. It paves the way for the celebration of the Christian Passover, the center and memorial of all the blessings that the sacrifice of Christ, the Lamb of the new Passover, immolated for the salvation of all, has brought to humanity. With the celebration of Joshua’s Passover the manna ceases, signifying that the journey in the wilderness has ended (see Ex 16).
- Joshua 5:13 The Bible has preserved only fragments of a mysterious ancient story, inspired perhaps by the story of God’s appearance to Moses in the burning bush (Ex 3) and intended to signify a solemn confirmation of Joshua’s mission as leader of the conquest. He showed his respect and subordination to God by taking off his shoes.

5 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?
15 And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

The New Generation Circumcised
5 As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites (A)who were by the sea, (B)heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts (C)melted and (D)there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.

8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. 9 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the (K)reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called (L)Gilgal[b] to this day.
First Passover in Canaan
10 While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover (M)on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. 11 And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12 And (N)the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
The Commander of the Lord's Army
13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, (O)a man was standing before him (P)with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua (Q)fell on his face to the earth and worshiped[c] and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, (R)“Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

9 (E)Тогава Господ рече на Иисуса: сега Аз снех от вас египетския позор. Поради това се и нарича онова място „Галгал“, дори и до днес.
10 (F)И стояха синовете Израилеви на стан в Галгал и направиха Пасха в равнините Иерихонски на четиринайсетия ден на месеца, вечерта;
11 (G)и на другия ден след Пасха почнаха да ядат от произведенията на тая земя безквасни хлябове и печени зърна в същия оня ден;
12 (H)а маната престана да пада на другия ден, след като почнаха да ядат от произведенията на земята; и нямаше вече мана у синовете Израилеви: през оная година те ядяха произведенията на Ханаанската земя.
13 (I)Когато Иисус се намираше близо до Иерихон, погледна и видя, и ето, пред него стои човек, с гол меч в ръка. Иисус се приближи до него и му каза: наш ли си, или от нашите неприятели?
14 (J)Той отговори: не; аз съм вожд на воинството Господне, сега дойдох (тук). Иисус падна ничком на земята, поклони се и му каза: какво ще заповяда господарят ми на своя раб?
15 (K)Вождът на воинството Господне каза Иисусу: събуй обущата от нозете си, понеже мястото, на което стоиш, е свето. Иисус тъй и направи.
16 А Иерихон беше укрепен и затворен от страх пред синовете Израилеви; никой не излизаше (от него) и никой не влизаше.
