8 (A)Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (B)Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and (C)purify your hearts, (D)you double-minded.9 (E)Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
15 (A)Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union?[a] And what was the one God[b] seeking?[c](B)Godly offspring. So guard yourselves[d] in your spirit, and let none of you be (C)faithless to the wife of your youth.
10 (A)I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; (B)I will bring sackcloth on every waist (C)and baldness on every head; (D)I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, (A)“return to me with all your heart, (B)with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 and (C)rend your hearts and not (D)your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, (E)for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; (F)and he relents over disaster. 14 (G)Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and (H)leave a blessing behind him, (I)a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?
13 (A)Put on sackcloth and lament, (B)O priests; (C)wail, O ministers of the altar. Go in, (D)pass the night in sackcloth, (E)O ministers of my God! (F)Because grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.
14 (G)Consecrate a fast; (H)call a solemn assembly. Gather (I)the elders and (J)all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.
15 Alas for the day! (K)For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty[a] it comes.
17 Thus says the Lord of hosts: (A)“Consider, and call for the mourning women to come; send for the skillful women to come; 18 let them make haste (B)and raise a wailing over us, (C)that our eyes may run down with tears and our eyelids flow with water. 19 For a sound of wailing is heard from Zion: (D)‘How we are ruined! We are utterly shamed, because we have left the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.’”
7 (A)The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. 8 (B)The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. 9 No more do they drink wine (C)with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. 10 (D)The wasted city is broken down; (E)every house is shut up so that none can enter. 11 (F)There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; (G)all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. 12 Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins.
