Yahweh Calls Israel to Return to Him

“If you will (A)return, O Israel,” declares Yahweh,
Then you should return to Me.
And (B)if you will put away your detested things from My presence
And will not waver
And you will (C)swear, ‘As Yahweh lives,’
(D)In truth, in justice, and in righteousness;
Then the (E)nations will [a]be blessed in Him,
And (F)in Him they will boast.”

For thus says Yahweh to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem,

[b](G)Break up your fallow ground,
And (H)do not sow among thorns.
(I)Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh
And remove the foreskins of your heart,
Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My (J)wrath go forth like fire
And burn with (K)none to quench it
Because of the evil of your deeds.”

Evil from the North

Declare in Judah and make it heard in Jerusalem and say,
(L)Blow the trumpet in the land;
Call out, make your voice full, and say,
(M)Gather yourselves, and let us go
Into the fortified cities.’
Lift up a (N)standard toward Zion!
Seek safety, do not stand still,
For I am bringing (O)evil from the north,
And great destruction.
A (P)lion has gone up from his thicket,
And a (Q)destroyer of nations has set out;
He has gone out from his place
To (R)make your land a desolation.
Your cities will be turned into ruins
Without inhabitant.
For this, (S)I gird myself with sackcloth,
Lament and wail;
For the (T)burning anger of Yahweh
Has not turned back from us.”

“It will be in that day,” declares Yahweh, “that the (U)heart of the king and the heart of the princes will perish; and the priests will be appalled, and the (V)prophets will be astonished.”

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Surely You have utterly (W)deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘(X)You will have peace’; whereas a sword touches the [c]throat.”

11 In that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A [d](Y)scorching wind from the bare heights in the wilderness along the way of the daughter of My people—not to winnow and not to cleanse, 12 a wind too full for these things—will come [e]for My purpose; now I will also speak judgments against them.

13 Behold, he (Z)goes up like clouds,
And his (AA)chariots like the whirlwind;
His horses are (AB)swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for (AC)we are devastated!”

14 Wash your heart from evil, O Jerusalem,
That you may be saved.
How long will your (AD)wicked thoughts
Lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares from (AE)Dan,
And makes wickedness heard from Mount Ephraim.
16 “Make mention of it to the nations, saying, ‘Behold!’
Make it heard over Jerusalem,
‘Besiegers come from a (AF)far country,
And (AG)give forth their voices against the cities of Judah.
17 Like watchmen of a field they are (AH)against her round about
Because she has (AI)rebelled against Me,’ declares Yahweh.
18 Your (AJ)ways and your deeds
Have done these things to you.
This is your evil. How (AK)bitter!
How it has touched your heart!”

Anguish over Judah’s Desolation

19 (AL)My [f]soul, my [g]soul! I am in anguish! [h]Oh, my heart!
My (AM)heart is pounding in me;
I cannot be silent
Because [i]you have heard, O my soul,
The (AN)sound of the trumpet,
The shout of war.
20 (AO)Destruction upon destruction is called out,
For the (AP)whole land is devastated;
Suddenly my (AQ)tents are devastated,
My curtains in an instant.
21 How long must I see the standard
And hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 (AR)For My people are ignorant fools,
They know Me not;
They are simpleminded children
And have no understanding.
They are wise to (AS)do evil,
But to do good they do not know.”

23 I saw on the earth, and behold, it was [j](AT)formless and void;
And to the heavens, and they had no light.
24 I saw on the mountains, and behold, they were (AU)quaking,
And all the hills [k]moved to and fro.
25 I saw, and behold, there was no man,
And all the (AV)birds of the sky had fled.
26 I saw, and behold, [l]the (AW)fruitful orchard was a wilderness,
And all its cities were torn down
Before Yahweh, before His burning anger.

27 For thus says Yahweh,

“The (AX)whole land shall be a desolation,
Yet I will (AY)not execute a complete destruction.
28 For this the (AZ)earth shall mourn
And the (BA)heavens above be dark
Because I have (BB)spoken; I have purposed,
And I will not [m]relent, nor will I turn from it.”
29 At the sound of the horseman and bowman (BC)every city flees;
They (BD)go into the thickets and climb up among the rocks;
(BE)Every city is forsaken,
And no man inhabits them.
30 And you, O devastated one, (BF)what will you do?
Although you dress in scarlet,
Although you decorate yourself with ornaments of gold,
Although you (BG)enlarge your eyes with paint,
In vain you make yourself beautiful.
Your [n](BH)lovers despise you;
They seek your life.
31 For I heard a sound as of a woman in labor pains,
The distress as of one giving birth to her first child,
The sound of the daughter of Zion (BI)gasping for breath,
(BJ)Stretching out her [o]hands, saying,
“Ah, woe is me, for my soul faints before murderers.”

If you return, O Israel,” declares[a] Yahweh,
    “you return to me.
And if you remove your abominations from my presence,[b]
    and you do not wander,
and you swear, ‘As Yahweh lives,’[c]
    in truth, in justice, and in righteousness,
then nations will be blessed by him,
    and in him they will boast.”
For thus says Yahweh
    to the men[d] of Judah and to Jerusalem,
“Break up for yourselves prepared virgin soil,
    and you must not sow among thornbushes.
Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh,
    and remove the foreskins of your hearts,[e]
men[f] of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
    lest my wrath goes forth like the fire and burns,
and there is no one who extinguishes it,[g]
    because of the evil of your deeds.”

An Invasion from the North

Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say,
    “Blow a horn through the land,
call with a loud voice[h] and say,
    ‘Be gathered and let us go into the fortified cities.’
Lift up a signal toward Zion,
    bring yourselves to safety; you must not remain standing,
for I am bringing evil from the north,
    and a great destruction.
A lion has gone up from his thicket,
    and a destroyer of nations has set out.
He has gone out from his place to make your land as a horror,
    your cities will go to ruin without[i] inhabitant.
Because of this gird yourselves with sackcloth,[j] lament and wail,
    for the burning anger[k] of Yahweh has not turned back from us.
And then on that day,” declares[l] Yahweh,
“the heart of the king and the heart of the officials will be destroyed,
    and the priests will be appalled,
    and the prophets will be astonished.”

10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh, surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘It will be peace for you,’ while the sword reaches up to the throat.”

11 At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem,
    A hot wind from the barren heights[m] in the desert,[n]
in the direction of[o] the daughter of my people,
    not to winnow and not to cleanse,
12 a wind too strong for[p] these will come for me,
    now also I speak judgments against them.”
13 Look, he comes up like the clouds,
    and his chariots are like the whirlwind,
his horses are swifter than eagles,
    woe to us, for we are devastated.
14 Cleanse your heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem,
    so that you may be saved.
How long[q] will your thoughts of mischief
    dwell in your inner part?
15 For a voice is declaring from Dan,
    and is proclaiming disaster from the mountain of Ephraim.
16 “Report to the nations, ‘Here they are!’
    Proclaim against Jerusalem,
‘Besiegers are coming from a distant land,[r]
    and they raise their voice against the cities of Judah.’
17 Like watchers of a field they were against her from all around,
    because she has rebelled against me,” declares[s] Yahweh.
18 “You obtained this for yourself
    because of your way and your deeds.
This is your doom, for it is bitter,
    yes, it has reached up to your heart.”
19 My bowels, my bowels! I writhe!
    The walls of my heart!
My heart is restless within me, I cannot keep silent,
    for I hear in my inner self the sound of a horn, the alarm of war.
20 Destruction on destruction is proclaimed,
    for all of the land is devastated.
Suddenly my tents are devastated,
    my tent curtains in a moment.
21 How long must I see the banner,
    and hear the sound of a horn?
22 “For my people are foolish,
    they have not known me.
They are foolish children,
    and they do not have insight.
They are skillful at doing evil,
    and they do not know how to do good.”
23 I looked at the earth, and behold, it was wasteland and emptiness,
    and to the heavens, and they were without their light.
24 I looked at the mountains, and behold, they were quaking,
    and all of the hills were jolted to and fro.
25 I looked and behold, there was no person,
    and all of the birds[t] of the sky had fled.
26 I looked and behold, the fruitful land was a desert,[u]
    and all of its cities were ruined before Yahweh,
    before the face of his burning anger.[v]
27 For thus says Yahweh, “All of the land will be a desolation,
    yet I will not make a complete desolation.
28 Because of this the earth will mourn,
    and the heavens above will become dark.
Because I have spoken, I have planned,
    and I have not relented, and I will not turn back from it.”
29 From the sound of a horseman and an archer[w] every town flees,
    they enter in the thickets and among the rocks they climb.
Every town is forsaken,
    and there is no person who lives in them.
30 And you, O devastated one, what do you do,
    that you put on crimson,
that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
    that you make your eyes look bigger with the eye make-up?
In vain you beautify yourself.
    Your lovers reject you;
    they seek your life.
31 For I heard a voice like an ill woman,
    anxiety like a woman who bears her first child,
the voice of the daughter of Zion.
    She is gasping for breath,
    she is spreading out her hands:
“Woe is me, for I am becoming tired[x] before killers.”
