The New Priestly Service

Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, (A)who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of (B)the [a]sanctuary and of (C)the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

For (D)every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore (E)it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve (F)the copy and (G)shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, (H)“See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now (I)He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a (J)better covenant, which was established on better promises.

A New Covenant(K)

For if that (L)first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: (M)“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the (N)Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and (O)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 (P)None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the (Q)Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, (R)and their sins [b]and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

13 (S)In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The Earthly Sanctuary(T)

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and (U)the earthly sanctuary. For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the [c]sanctuary; (V)and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, which had the (W)golden censer and (X)the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were (Y)the golden pot that had the manna, (Z)Aaron’s rod that budded, and (AA)the tablets of the covenant; and (AB)above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

Limitations of the Earthly Service

Now when these things had been thus prepared, (AC)the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone (AD)once a year, not without blood, which he offered for (AE)himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that (AF)the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered (AG)which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— 10 concerned only with (AH)foods and drinks, (AI)various [d]washings, (AJ)and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of (AK)the good things [e]to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not (AL)with the blood of goats and calves, but (AM)with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place (AN)once for all, (AO)having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if (AP)the blood of bulls and goats and (AQ)the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, [f]sanctifies for the [g]purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [h]spot to God, (AR)cleanse your conscience from (AS)dead works (AT)to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason (AU)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that (AV)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For (AW)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 (AX)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [i]precept to all the people according to the law, (AY)he took the blood of calves and goats, (AZ)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (BA)“This is the (BB)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise (BC)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [j]purified with blood, and (BD)without shedding of blood there is no [k]remission.

Greatness of Christ’s Sacrifice

23 Therefore it was necessary that (BE)the copies of the things in the heavens should be [l]purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For (BF)Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are [m]copies of (BG)the true, but into heaven itself, now (BH)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as (BI)the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 (BJ)And as it is appointed for men to die once, (BK)but after this the judgment, 28 so (BL)Christ was (BM)offered once to bear the sins (BN)of many. To those who (BO)eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Animal Sacrifices Insufficient

10 For the law, having a (BP)shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, (BQ)can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once [n]purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For (BR)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(BS)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(BT)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [o]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (BU)By that will we have been [p]sanctified (BV)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

11 And every priest stands (BW)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 (BX)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down (BY)at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting (BZ)till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being [q]sanctified.

15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

16 (CA)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, (CB)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is [r]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Hold Fast Your Confession

19 Therefore, brethren, having (CC)boldness[s] to enter (CD)the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and (CE)living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us (CF)draw near with a true heart (CG)in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (CH)He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 (CI)not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and (CJ)so much the more as you see (CK)the Day approaching.

The Just Live by Faith

26 For (CL)if we sin willfully (CM)after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there (CN)no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and (CO)fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three (CP)witnesses. 29 (CQ)Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, (CR)counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, (CS)and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, (CT)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” [t]says the Lord. And again, (CU)“The Lord will judge His people.” 31 (CV)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But (CW)recall the former days in which, after you were [u]illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made (CX)a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while (CY)you became companions of those who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion on [v]me (CZ)in my chains, and (DA)joyfully accepted the plundering of your [w]goods, knowing that (DB)you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves [x]in heaven. 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, (DC)which has great reward. 36 (DD)For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, (DE)you may receive the promise:

37 “For (DF)yet a little while,
And (DG)He[y] who is coming will come and will not [z]tarry.
38 Now (DH)the[aa] just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those (DI)who draw back to [ab]perdition, but of those who (DJ)believe to the saving of the soul.

By Faith We Understand

11 Now faith is the [ac]substance of things hoped for, the [ad]evidence (DK)of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith we understand that (DL)the [ae]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Faith at the Dawn of History(DM)

By faith (DN)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still (DO)speaks.

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, (DP)“and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

By faith (DQ)Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, (DR)prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of (DS)the righteousness which is according to faith.

Faithful Abraham(DT)

By faith (DU)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, (DV)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, (DW)the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for (DX)the city which has foundations, (DY)whose builder and maker is God.

11 By faith (DZ)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and (EA)she[af] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him (EB)faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as (EC)dead, were born as many as the (ED)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

13 These all died in faith, (EE)not having received the (EF)promises, but (EG)having seen them afar off [ag]were assured of them, embraced them and (EH)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things (EI)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind (EJ)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed (EK)to be called their God, for He has (EL)prepared a city for them.

The Faith of the Patriarchs(EM)

17 By faith Abraham, (EN)when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 [ah]of whom it was said, (EO)“In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God (EP)was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

20 By faith (EQ)Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, (ER)blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.

22 By faith (ES)Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.

The Faith of Moses(ET)

23 By faith (EU)Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s (EV)command.

24 By faith (EW)Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the [ai]passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming (EX)the [aj]reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures [ak]in Egypt; for he looked to the (EY)reward.

27 By faith (EZ)he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. 28 By faith (FA)he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

29 By faith (FB)they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.

By Faith They Overcame

30 By faith (FC)the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31 By faith (FD)the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who [al]did not believe, when (FE)she had received the spies with peace.

32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of (FF)Gideon and (FG)Barak and (FH)Samson and (FI)Jephthah, also of (FJ)David and (FK)Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, (FL)stopped the mouths of lions, 34 (FM)quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 (FN)Women received their dead raised to life again.

Others were (FO)tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and (FP)of chains and imprisonment. 37 (FQ)They were stoned, they were sawn in two, [am]were tempted, were slain with the sword. (FR)They wandered about (FS)in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— 38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, (FT)in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, (FU)having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be (FV)made perfect apart from us.

The Race of Faith

12 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, (FW)let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and (FX)let us run (FY)with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the [an]author and [ao]finisher of our faith, (FZ)who for the joy that was set before Him (GA)endured the cross, despising the shame, and (GB)has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Discipline of God(GC)

(GD)For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, (GE)lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. (GF)You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

(GG)“My son, do not despise the [ap]chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For (GH)whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”

(GI)If[aq] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what (GJ)son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, (GK)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to (GL)the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, (GM)that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [ar]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields (GN)the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Renew Your Spiritual Vitality(GO)

12 Therefore (GP)strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

14 (GQ)Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, (GR)without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone (GS)fall short of the grace of God; lest any (GT)root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any (GU)fornicator or [as]profane person like Esau, (GV)who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was (GW)rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

The Glorious Company

18 For you have not come [at]to (GX)the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and [au]darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it (GY)begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: (GZ)“And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned [av]or shot with an arrow.” 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, (HA)“I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)

22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the [aw]general assembly and church of (HB)the firstborn (HC)who are registered in heaven, to God (HD)the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men (HE)made perfect, 24 to Jesus (HF)the Mediator of the new covenant, and to (HG)the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things (HH)than that of Abel.

Hear the Heavenly Voice

25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For (HI)if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, (HJ)“Yet once more I [ax]shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” 27 Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the (HK)removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we [ay]may (HL)serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For (HM)our God is a consuming fire.

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest,(A) who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,(B) and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle(C) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest(D) is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices,(E) and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.(F) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.(G) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy(H) and shadow(I) of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned(J) when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a](K) But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant(L) of which he is mediator(M) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.(N) But God found fault with the people and said[b]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant(O)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors(P)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant(Q) I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.(R)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(S)
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,(T)
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.(U)[c](V)

13 By calling this covenant “new,”(W) he has made the first one obsolete;(X) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(Y) A tabernacle(Z) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(AA) and the table(AB) with its consecrated bread;(AC) this was called the Holy Place.(AD) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(AE) which had the golden altar of incense(AF) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(AG) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(AH) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(AI) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(AJ) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(AK) overshadowing the atonement cover.(AL) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(AM) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(AN) the inner room,(AO) and that only once a year,(AP) and never without blood,(AQ) which he offered for himself(AR) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(AS) The Holy Spirit was showing(AT) by this that the way(AU) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(AV) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(AW) were not able to clear the conscience(AX) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(AY) and drink(AZ) and various ceremonial washings(BA)—external regulations(BB) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(BC) of the good things that are now already here,[d](BD) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(BE) that is not made with human hands,(BF) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(BG) but he entered the Most Holy Place(BH) once for all(BI) by his own blood,(BJ) thus obtaining[e] eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls(BK) and the ashes of a heifer(BL) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit(BM) offered himself(BN) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences(BO) from acts that lead to death,[f](BP) so that we may serve the living God!(BQ)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator(BR) of a new covenant,(BS) that those who are called(BT) may receive the promised(BU) eternal inheritance(BV)—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.(BW)

16 In the case of a will,[g] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.(BX) 19 When Moses had proclaimed(BY) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,(BZ) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.(CA) 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”[h](CB) 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,(CC) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.(CD)

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies(CE) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one;(CF) he entered heaven itself,(CG) now to appear for us in God’s presence.(CH) 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place(CI) every year with blood that is not his own.(CJ) 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.(CK) But he has appeared(CL) once for all(CM) at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.(CN) 27 Just as people are destined to die once,(CO) and after that to face judgment,(CP) 28 so Christ was sacrificed once(CQ) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,(CR) not to bear sin,(CS) but to bring salvation(CT) to those who are waiting for him.(CU)

Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All

10 The law is only a shadow(CV) of the good things(CW) that are coming—not the realities themselves.(CX) For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect(CY) those who draw near to worship.(CZ) Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.(DA) But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.(DB) It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats(DC) to take away sins.(DD)

Therefore, when Christ came into the world,(DE) he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;(DF)
with burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll(DG)
I have come to do your will, my God.’”[i](DH)

First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”(DI)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(DJ) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(DK) through the sacrifice of the body(DL) of Jesus Christ once for all.(DM)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(DN) which can never take away sins.(DO) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(DP) he sat down at the right hand of God,(DQ) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(DR) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(DS) forever those who are being made holy.(DT)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(DU) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[j](DV)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[k](DW)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence(DX) to enter the Most Holy Place(DY) by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way(DZ) opened for us through the curtain,(EA) that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest(EB) over the house of God,(EC) 22 let us draw near to God(ED) with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings,(EE) having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience(EF) and having our bodies washed with pure water.(EG) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope(EH) we profess,(EI) for he who promised is faithful.(EJ) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,(EK) 25 not giving up meeting together,(EL) as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another(EM)—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.(EN)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(EO) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(EP) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(EQ) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(ER) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(ES) underfoot,(ET) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(EU) that sanctified them,(EV) and who has insulted the Spirit(EW) of grace?(EX) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[l](EY) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[m](EZ) 31 It is a dreadful thing(FA) to fall into the hands(FB) of the living God.(FC)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(FD) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(FE) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(FF) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(FG) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(FH) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(FI) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(FJ) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(FK) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(FL) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
he who is coming(FM) will come
    and will not delay.”[n](FN)

38 And,

“But my righteous[o] one will live by faith.(FO)
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”[p](FP)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(FQ) and assurance about what we do not see.(FR) This is what the ancients were commended for.(FS)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(FT) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(FU) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(FV) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(FW)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[q](FX) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(FY) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(FZ) in holy fear built an ark(GA) to save his family.(GB) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(GC)

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(GD) obeyed and went,(GE) even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land(GF) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(GG) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(GH) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(GI) with foundations,(GJ) whose architect and builder is God.(GK) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(GL) was enabled to bear children(GM) because she[r] considered him faithful(GN) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(GO) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(GP)

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(GQ) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(GR) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(GS) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(GT) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(GU) Therefore God is not ashamed(GV) to be called their God,(GW) for he has prepared a city(GX) for them.

17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(GY) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[s](GZ) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(HA) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.(HB)

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,(HC) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.(HD)

23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,(HE) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.(HF)

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.(HG) 25 He chose to be mistreated(HH) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace(HI) for the sake of Christ(HJ) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.(HK) 27 By faith he left Egypt,(HL) not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer(HM) of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.(HN)

29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.(HO)

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.(HP)

31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.[t](HQ)

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(HR) Barak,(HS) Samson(HT) and Jephthah,(HU) about David(HV) and Samuel(HW) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(HX) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(HY) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(HZ) and escaped the edge of the sword;(IA) whose weakness was turned to strength;(IB) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(IC) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(ID) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(IE) and even chains and imprisonment.(IF) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[u](IG) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(IH) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(II) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(IJ) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(IK) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(IL) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(IM) would they be made perfect.(IN)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run(IO) with perseverance(IP) the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,(IQ) the pioneer(IR) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,(IS) scorning its shame,(IT) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.(IU) Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary(IV) and lose heart.

God Disciplines His Children

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.(IW) And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(IX) when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(IY)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[v](IZ)

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(JA) For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(JB)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(JC) and live!(JD) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(JE) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace(JF) for those who have been trained by it.

12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.(JG) 13 “Make level paths for your feet,”[w](JH) so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.(JI)

Warning and Encouragement

14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone(JJ) and to be holy;(JK) without holiness no one will see the Lord.(JL) 15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God(JM) and that no bitter root(JN) grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral,(JO) or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.(JP) 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears,(JQ) he could not change what he had done.

The Mountain of Fear and the Mountain of Joy

18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm;(JR) 19 to a trumpet blast(JS) or to such a voice speaking words(JT) that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,(JU) 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.”[x](JV) 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”[y](JW)

22 But you have come to Mount Zion,(JX) to the city(JY) of the living God,(JZ) the heavenly Jerusalem.(KA) You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn,(KB) whose names are written in heaven.(KC) You have come to God, the Judge of all,(KD) to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,(KE) 24 to Jesus the mediator(KF) of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood(KG) that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.(KH)

25 See to it that you do not refuse(KI) him who speaks.(KJ) If they did not escape when they refused him who warned(KK) them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?(KL) 26 At that time his voice shook the earth,(KM) but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”[z](KN) 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken(KO)—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,(KP) let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,(KQ) 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”[aa](KR)
