Habakkuk Complains to God

This is the message that was given to Habakkuk the prophet.

Lord, I continue to ask for help. When will you listen to me? I cried to you about the violence, but you did nothing! People are stealing things and hurting others. They are arguing and fighting. Why do you make me look at these terrible things? The law is weak and not fair to people. Evil people win their fights against good people. So the law is no longer fair, and justice does not win anymore.

The Lord Answers Habakkuk

“Look at the other nations! Watch them, and you will be amazed. I will do something in your lifetime that will amaze you. You would not believe it even if you were told about it. I will make the Babylonians[a] a strong nation. They are cruel and powerful fighters. They will march across the earth. They will take houses and cities that don’t belong to them. The Babylonians will scare the other people. They will do what they want to do and go where they want to go. Their horses will be faster than leopards and more dangerous than wolves at sunset. Their horse soldiers will come from faraway places. They will attack their enemies quickly, like a hungry eagle swooping down from the sky. The one thing they all want to do is fight. Their armies will march fast like the wind in the desert. And the Babylonian soldiers will take many prisoners—as many as the grains of sand.

10 “The Babylonian soldiers will laugh at the kings of other nations. Foreign rulers will be like jokes to them. The Babylonian soldiers will laugh at the cities with tall, strong walls. They will simply build dirt roads up to the top of the walls and easily defeat the cities. 11 Then they will leave like the wind and go on to fight against other places. The only thing the Babylonians worship is their own strength.”

Habakkuk’s Second Complaint

12 Lord, you are the one who lives forever!
You are my holy God who never dies![b]
Lord, you created the Babylonians to do what must be done.
Our Rock, you created them to punish people.
13 Your eyes are too good to look at evil.
You cannot stand to see people doing wrong.
So why do you permit such evil?
How can you watch while the wicked destroy people who are so much better?

14 You made people like fish in the sea.
They are like little sea animals without a leader.
15 The enemy catches all of them with hooks and nets.
The enemy catches them in his net and drags them in,
and the enemy is very happy with what he caught.
16 His net helps him live like the rich
    and enjoy the best food.
So the enemy worships his net.
He makes sacrifices and burns incense to honor his net.
17 Will he continue to take riches with his net?
Will he continue destroying people without showing mercy?

I will stand like a guard and watch.
I will wait to see what the Lord will say to me.
I will wait and learn how he answers my questions.

God Answers Habakkuk

The Lord answered me, “Write down what I show you. Write it clearly on a sign so that the message will be easy to read.[c] This message is about a special time in the future. This message is about the end, and it will come true. Just be patient and wait for it. That time will come; it will not be late. This message cannot help those who refuse to listen to it, but those who are good will live because they believe it.

“Wine can trick a person. In the same way a strong man’s pride can fool him, but he will not find peace. He is like death—he always wants more and more. And, like death, he will never be satisfied. He will continue to defeat other nations and to make those people his prisoners. But soon enough, all those people will laugh at him and tell stories about his defeat. They will laugh and say, ‘It’s too bad that the man who took so many things will not get to keep them! He made himself rich by collecting debts.’

“Strong man, you have taken money from people. One day they will wake up and realize what is happening, and they will stand against you. Then they will take things from you, and you will be very afraid. You have stolen things from many nations, so they will take much from you. You have killed many people and destroyed lands and cities. You have killed all the people there.

“Look at you people! You get rich by cheating people, and it hurts your own family! You build your houses high on the cliffs to protect yourself from danger. 10 You planned shameful things, and that will bring shame to your own family. You have done wrong, and it will cost you your life. 11 The stones of the walls will cry out against you. Even the wooden rafters[d] in your own house will prove that you are wrong.

12 “Look at them! They kill people to build their city and do wicked things to make their walled city strong. 13 But the Lord All-Powerful has decided that a fire will destroy everything that those people worked to build. All their work will be for nothing. 14 Then people everywhere will know about the Glory of the Lord. This news will spread just as water spreads out into the sea. 15 It will be very bad for those who become angry and make other people suffer. Like an angry drunk, they knock others to the ground and strip them naked, just to see their naked bodies.[e]

16 “But they will know the Lord’s anger. It will be like a cup of poison in the Lord’s right hand. They will taste that anger, and then they will fall to the ground like drunks.

“Evil ruler, you will drink from that cup. You will get shame, not honor. 17 You hurt many people in Lebanon and stole many animals there. So you will be afraid because of the people who died and because of the bad things you did to that country. You will be afraid because of what you did to those cities and to the people who lived there.”

The Message About Idols

18 Their false god will not help them, because it is only a statue that someone covered with metal. It is only a statue, so whoever made it cannot expect it to help. That statue cannot even speak! 19 Look at them! They speak to a wooden statue and tell it, “Get up! Rescue me.” They talk to a stone that cannot speak and say, “Wake up!” Don’t you know those things cannot help you? That statue may be covered with gold and silver, but there is no life in it.

20 But the Lord is in his holy temple, so the whole earth should be silent in his presence and show him respect.

Habakkuk’s Prayer

The prayer of Habakkuk the prophet.[f]

Lord, I have heard the news about you.
I am amazed, Lord, at the powerful things you did in the past.
Now I pray that you will do great things in our time.
Please make these things happen in our own days.
But in your anger,
remember to show mercy to us. Selah

God is coming from Teman.
The Holy One is coming from Mount Paran. Selah

His glory covers the heavens,
and his praise fills the earth!
Rays of light shine from his hand, a bright, shining light.
There is such power hiding in that hand.
The sickness went before him,
and the destroyer followed behind him.[g]
He stood and judged the earth.
He looked at the people of all the nations,
    and they shook with fear.
For many years the mountains stood strong,
but those mountains fell to pieces.
Those old, old hills fell down.
God has always been able to do that.

I saw that the cities of Cushan were in trouble
and that the houses of Midian trembled with fear.
Lord, were you angry at the rivers?
Were you angry at the streams?
Were you angry at the sea?
Were you angry when you rode your horses and chariots to victory?

Even then you showed your rainbow.
It was proof of your agreement with the families of the earth.[h] Selah

And the dry land split the rivers.
10     The mountains saw you and shook.
The water flowed off the land.
The water from the sea made a loud noise
as it lost its power over the land.
11 The sun and the moon lost their brightness.
They stopped shining when they saw your bright flashes of lightning.
That lightning was like spears and arrows shooting through the air.
12 In anger you walked on the earth
    and punished the nations.
13 You came to save your people
and to lead your chosen king[i] to victory.
You killed the leader in every evil family,
    from the least important person
to the most important in the land.[j] Selah

14 You used Moses’ walking stick
    to stop the enemy soldiers.
Those soldiers came
like a powerful storm to fight against us.
They thought they could defeat us easily,
as robbing the poor in secret.
15 But you marched your horses
through the deep water, stirring up the mud.
16 My whole body shook when I heard the story.
    My lips trembled.
I felt weak deep down in my bones
    and stood there shaking.
But I will wait patiently for destruction to come to those who attack us.

Always Rejoice in the Lord

17 Figs might not grow on the fig trees,
and grapes might not grow on the vines.
Olives might not grow on the olive trees,
and food might not grow in the fields.
There might not be any sheep in the pens
    or cattle in the barns.
18 But I will still be glad in the Lord
and rejoice in God my Savior.

19 The Lord God gives me my strength.
He helps me run fast like a deer.
He leads me safely on the mountains.

To the music director. On my stringed instruments.

This is the message that the Lord gave to Zephaniah. He received this message during the time that Josiah son of Amon was king of Judah. Zephaniah was the son of Cushi, who was the son of Gedaliah. Gedaliah was the son of Amariah, who was the son of Hezekiah.

The Lord’s Day for Judging the People

The Lord says, “I will destroy everything on earth.[k] I will destroy all the people and all the animals. I will destroy the birds in the air and the fish in the sea. I will destroy the evil people and everything that makes them sin. I will remove all people from the earth.” This is what the Lord said.

“I will punish Judah and the people living in Jerusalem. I will remove from this place any signs of Baal worship. No one will remember the priests who serve the idols there. And those who go up on their roofs to worship the stars[l] will be forgotten. They worship me, the Lord, but they also use the name of the false god Milcom to make promises. They have turned away from me, the Lord. They have stopped following me. They no longer ask me, the Lord, for help.”

Be silent before the Lord God, because the Lord’s day for judging the people is coming soon. The Lord has prepared his sacrifice, and he has told his invited guests to get ready.[m]

The Lord said, “On the Lord’s day of sacrifice, I will punish the king’s sons and other leaders. I will punish all the people wearing clothes from other countries. At that time I will punish all the people who jump over the threshold[n] and those who fill their master’s house[o] with lies and violence.”

10 The Lord also said, “At that time people will be calling for help at Fish Gate in Jerusalem and mourning in the new part of town. They will hear the sound of destruction in the hills around the city. 11 You people living in the lower part of town will cry, because all the traders and rich merchants will be destroyed.

12 “At that time I will take a lamp and search through Jerusalem. I will find all those who are satisfied to live their own way. They say, ‘The Lord does nothing. He does not help, and he does not hurt!’ I will find them, and I will punish them. 13 Then others will take their wealth and destroy their houses. Those who built houses will not live in them, and those who planted vineyards will not drink the wine from the grapes.”

14 The Lord’s special day for judging is coming soon! It is near and coming fast. People will hear very sad sounds on the Lord’s special day of judgment. Even strong soldiers will cry. 15 The Lord will show his anger at that time. It will be a time of terrible troubles and a time of destruction. It will be a time of darkness—a black, cloudy, and stormy day. 16 It will be like a time of war when people hear horns and trumpets in the defense towers and protected cities.

17 The Lord said, “I will make life very hard on the people. They will walk around like the blind who don’t know where they are going. That will happen because they sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be spilled on the ground. Their dead bodies will lie like dung on the ground. 18 Their gold and silver will not help them! At that time the Lord will become very upset and angry. The Lord will destroy the whole world[p]! He will completely destroy everyone on earth!”

God Asks People to Change Their Lives

Shameless people, change your lives before you become like a dry and dying flower. In the heat of day, a flower will wilt and die. You will be like that when the Lord shows his terrible anger. So change your lives before the Lord shows his anger against you! All you humble people, come to the Lord! Obey his laws. Learn to do good things. Learn to be humble. Maybe then you will be safe when the Lord shows his anger.

The Lord Will Punish Israel’s Neighbors

No one will be left in Gaza. Ashkelon will be destroyed. By noon, the people will be forced to leave Ashdod. Ekron[q] will be empty.[r] You Cretans[s] living by the sea, this message from the Lord is about you. Canaan, land of the Philistines, you will be destroyed—no one will live there! Your land by the sea will become empty fields for shepherds and their sheep. Then the land will belong to the survivors from Judah. The Lord their God will remember the people from Judah and restore their fortunes. Then they will let their sheep eat the grass in those fields. In the evenings they will lie down in the empty houses of Ashkelon.

The Lord says, “I know what the people of Moab and Ammon did. They embarrassed my people. They took their land to make their own countries larger. So, as surely as I am alive, Moab and the people of Ammon will be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah. I am the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, and I promise those countries will be destroyed completely forever. Their land will be overgrown with weeds. It will be like the land covered with salt by the Dead Sea. The survivors of my people will take that land and everything left in it.”

10 This will happen to the people of Moab and Ammon because they were so proud and cruel and humiliated the people of the Lord All-Powerful. 11 They will be afraid of the Lord, because he will destroy their gods. Then everyone in all the faraway lands will worship the Lord. 12 People of Ethiopia, this even means you! The Lord’s sword will kill your people. 13 Then the Lord will turn north and punish Assyria. He will destroy Nineveh—that city will be like an empty, dry desert. 14 Only sheep and wild animals will live in those ruins. Owls and crows will sit on the columns that are left standing. Their calls will be heard coming through the windows. Crows will sit on the doorsteps. Black birds[t] will make their homes in those empty houses. 15 Nineveh is so proud now. It is such a happy city. The people think they are safe. They think Nineveh is the greatest place in the world, but it will be destroyed! It will be an empty place where only wild animals go to rest. People who pass by will whistle and shake their heads when they see how badly the city was destroyed.

The Future of Jerusalem

Jerusalem, your people fought against God. They hurt other people, and you have been stained with sin. They didn’t listen to me or accept my teachings. Jerusalem didn’t trust the Lord. Jerusalem didn’t go to her God. Jerusalem’s leaders are like roaring lions. Her judges are like hungry wolves that come in the evening to attack the sheep—and in the morning nothing is left. Her prophets are always making secret plans to get more and more. Her priests have treated holy things as if they were not holy. They have done bad things to God’s teachings. But the Lord is still in that city, and he continues to be good. He does not do anything wrong. He continues to help his people. Morning after morning he makes good decisions for them. Not a day passes without his justice. He never gives a decision that is crooked or is something to be ashamed of.

The Lord says, “I have destroyed whole nations and their defense towers. I destroyed their streets and now no one goes there anymore. Their cities are empty—no one lives there anymore. I tell you this so that you will learn a lesson. I want you to fear and respect me. If you do this, your home will not be destroyed, and I will not have to punish you the way I planned.” But those evil people only wanted to do more of the same evil things they had already done!

The Lord said, “So just wait! Wait for me to stand and judge you. I have the right to bring people from many nations and use them to punish you. I will use them to show my anger against you. I will use them to show how upset I am—and the whole country will be destroyed. Then I will change people from other nations so that they can speak the language clearly and call out the name of the Lord. They will all worship me together, shoulder to shoulder, as one people. 10 People will come all the way from the other side of the river in Ethiopia. My scattered people will come to me. My worshipers will come and bring their gifts to me.

11 “Then, Jerusalem, you will no longer be ashamed of the wrong things your people do against me. That is because I will remove all the bad people from Jerusalem. I will take away all the proud people. There will not be any of them on my holy mountain.[u] 12 I will let only meek and humble people stay in my city, and they will trust the Lord’s name. 13 The survivors of Israel will not do bad things or tell lies. They will not try to trick people with lies. They will be like sheep that eat and lie down in peace—and no one will bother them.”

A Happy Song

14 Jerusalem, sing and be happy!
    Israel, shout for joy!
Jerusalem, be happy and have fun!
15 The Lord stopped your punishment.
He destroyed your enemies’ strong towers.
King of Israel, the Lord is with you.
You don’t need to worry about anything bad happening.
16 At that time Jerusalem will be told,
    “Be strong, don’t be afraid!
17 The Lord your God is with you.
He is like a powerful soldier.
    He will save you.
He will show how much he loves you
and how happy he is with you.
He will laugh and be happy about you,
18     like people at a party.
I will take away your shame.
I will make them stop hurting you.[v]
19 At that time I will punish those who hurt you.
I will save my hurt people
and bring back those who were forced to leave.
I will give them praise and honor everywhere,
even in places where they suffered shame.
20 At that time I will lead you back home.
I will bring your people back together.
I will cause people everywhere to honor and praise you.
You will see me bring back all the blessings you once had.”
This is what the Lord said.

The prophecy(A) that Habakkuk the prophet received.

Habakkuk’s Complaint

How long,(B) Lord, must I call for help,
    but you do not listen?(C)
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
    but you do not save?(D)
Why do you make me look at injustice?
    Why do you tolerate(E) wrongdoing?(F)
Destruction and violence(G) are before me;
there is strife,(H) and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law(I) is paralyzed,
    and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
    so that justice(J) is perverted.(K)

The Lord’s Answer

“Look at the nations and watch—
    and be utterly amazed.(L)
For I am going to do something in your days
    that you would not believe,
    even if you were told.(M)
I am raising up the Babylonians,[a](N)
    that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth(O)
to seize dwellings not their own.(P)
They are a feared and dreaded people;(Q)
they are a law to themselves
    and promote their own honor.
Their horses are swifter(R) than leopards,
    fiercer than wolves(S) at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong;
    their horsemen come from afar.
They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;
they all come intent on violence.
Their hordes[b] advance like a desert wind
    and gather prisoners(T) like sand.
10 They mock kings
    and scoff at rulers.(U)
They laugh at all fortified cities;
by building earthen ramps(V) they capture them.
11 Then they sweep past like the wind(W) and go on—
guilty people, whose own strength is their god.”(X)

Habakkuk’s Second Complaint

12 Lord, are you not from everlasting?(Y)
My God, my Holy One,(Z) you[c] will never die.(AA)
You, Lord, have appointed(AB) them to execute judgment;
you, my Rock,(AC) have ordained them to punish.
13 Your eyes are too pure(AD) to look on evil;
    you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.(AE)
Why then do you tolerate(AF) the treacherous?(AG)
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?(AH)
14 You have made people like the fish in the sea,
like the sea creatures that have no ruler.
15 The wicked(AI) foe pulls all of them up with hooks,(AJ)
he catches them in his net,(AK)
he gathers them up in his dragnet;
and so he rejoices and is glad.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and burns incense(AL) to his dragnet,
for by his net he lives in luxury
    and enjoys the choicest food.
17 Is he to keep on emptying his net,
    destroying nations without mercy?(AM)

I will stand at my watch(AN)
and station myself on the ramparts;(AO)
I will look to see what he will say(AP) to me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint.[d](AQ)

The Lord’s Answer

Then the Lord replied:

“Write(AR) down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald[e] may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time;(AS)
    it speaks of the end(AT)
    and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait(AU) for it;
    it[f] will certainly come
    and will not delay.(AV)

“See, the enemy is puffed up;
    his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person(AW) will live by his faithfulness[g](AX)
indeed, wine(AY) betrays him;
he is arrogant(AZ) and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,(BA)
he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive(BB) all the peoples.

“Will not all of them taunt(BC) him with ridicule and scorn, saying,

“‘Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
and makes himself wealthy by extortion!(BD)
How long must this go on?’
Will not your creditors suddenly arise?
Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
Then you will become their prey.(BE)
Because you have plundered many nations,
the peoples who are left will plunder you.(BF)
For you have shed human blood;(BG)
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.(BH)

“Woe to him who builds(BI) his house by unjust gain,(BJ)
    setting his nest(BK) on high
to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin(BL) of many peoples,
shaming(BM) your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones(BN) of the wall will cry out,
and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.

12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed(BO)
and establishes a town by injustice!
13 Has not the Lord Almighty determined
that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire,(BP)
that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?(BQ)
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory(BR) of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.(BS)

15 “Woe to him who gives drink(BT) to his neighbors,
pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!
16 You will be filled with shame(BU) instead of glory.(BV)
Now it is your turn! Drink(BW) and let your nakedness be exposed[h]!(BX)
The cup(BY) from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence(BZ) you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and your destruction of animals will terrify you.(CA)
For you have shed human blood;(CB)
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

18 “Of what value(CC) is an idol(CD) carved by a craftsman?
Or an image(CE) that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
he makes idols that cannot speak.(CF)
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’
Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’(CG)
Can it give guidance?
It is covered with gold and silver;(CH)
there is no breath in it.”(CI)

20 The Lord is in his holy temple;(CJ)
let all the earth be silent(CK) before him.

15 You trampled the sea(DW) with your horses,
    churning the great waters.(DX)

16 I heard and my heart pounded,
    my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,
    and my legs trembled.(DY)
Yet I will wait patiently(DZ) for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,(EA)
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,(EB)
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,(EC)
I will be joyful in God my Savior.(ED)

19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;(EE)
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.(EF)

For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah(EG) son of Amon(EH) king of Judah:

Judgment on the Whole Earth in the Day of the Lord

“I will sweep away everything
from the face of the earth,”(EI)
declares the Lord.
“I will sweep away both man and beast;(EJ)
I will sweep away the birds in the sky(EK)
and the fish in the sea—
and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”[k]

“When I destroy all mankind
on the face of the earth,”(EL)
declares the Lord,(EM)
“I will stretch out my hand(EN) against Judah
and against all who live in Jerusalem.
I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place,(EO)
the very names of the idolatrous priests(EP)
those who bow down on the roofs
    to worship the starry host,(EQ)
those who bow down and swear by the Lord
and who also swear by Molek,[l](ER)
those who turn back from following(ES) the Lord
and neither seek(ET) the Lord nor inquire(EU) of him.”

Be silent(EV) before the Sovereign Lord,
for the day of the Lord(EW) is near.
The Lord has prepared a sacrifice;(EX)
he has consecrated those he has invited.

“On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice
    I will punish(EY) the officials
    and the king’s sons(EZ)
and all those clad
    in foreign clothes.
On that day I will punish
all who avoid stepping on the threshold,[m](FA)
who fill the temple of their gods
    with violence and deceit.(FB)

10 “On that day,(FC)
    declares the Lord,
“a cry will go up from the Fish Gate,(FD)
    wailing(FE) from the New Quarter,
and a loud crash from the hills.
11 Wail,(FF) you who live in the market district[n];
all your merchants will be wiped out,
all who trade with[o] silver will be destroyed.(FG)
12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
and punish those who are complacent,(FH)
who are like wine left on its dregs,(FI)
who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing,(FJ)
    either good or bad.’(FK)
13 Their wealth will be plundered,(FL)
    their houses demolished.
Though they build houses,
    they will not live in them;
though they plant vineyards,
they will not drink the wine.”(FM)

14 The great day of the Lord(FN) is near(FO)
    near and coming quickly.
The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter;
the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.
15 That day will be a day of wrath—
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of trouble and ruin,
a day of darkness(FP) and gloom,
a day of clouds and blackness(FQ)
16     a day of trumpet and battle cry(FR)
against the fortified cities
    and against the corner towers.(FS)

17 “I will bring such distress(FT) on all people
that they will grope about like those who are blind,(FU)
because they have sinned against the Lord.
Their blood will be poured out(FV) like dust
    and their entrails like dung.(FW)
18 Neither their silver nor their gold
will be able to save them
on the day of the Lord’s wrath.”(FX)

In the fire of his jealousy(FY)
the whole earth will be consumed,(FZ)
for he will make a sudden end
of all who live on the earth.(GA)

Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nations

Judah Summoned to Repent

Gather together,(GB) gather yourselves together,
    you shameful(GC) nation,
before the decree takes effect
and that day passes like windblown chaff,(GD)
before the Lord’s fierce anger(GE)
    comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord’s wrath(GF)
    comes upon you.
Seek(GG) the Lord, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness,(GH) seek humility;(GI)
    perhaps you will be sheltered(GJ)
on the day of the Lord’s anger.

Philistia

Gaza(GK) will be abandoned
    and Ashkelon(GL) left in ruins.
At midday Ashdod will be emptied
    and Ekron uprooted.
Woe to you who live by the sea,
    you Kerethite(GM) people;
the word of the Lord is against you,(GN)
    Canaan, land of the Philistines.
He says, “I will destroy you,
    and none will be left.”(GO)
The land by the sea will become pastures
    having wells for shepherds
    and pens for flocks.(GP)
That land will belong
    to the remnant(GQ) of the people of Judah;
    there they will find pasture.
In the evening they will lie down
    in the houses of Ashkelon.
The Lord their God will care for them;
    he will restore their fortunes.[p](GR)

Moab and Ammon

“I have heard the insults(GS) of Moab(GT)
and the taunts of the Ammonites,(GU)
who insulted(GV) my people
and made threats against their land.(GW)
Therefore, as surely as I live,”
    declares the Lord Almighty,
    the God of Israel,
“surely Moab(GX) will become like Sodom,(GY)
    the Ammonites(GZ) like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
    a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder(HA) them;
the survivors(HB) of my nation will inherit their land.(HC)

10 This is what they will get in return for their pride,(HD)
    for insulting(HE) and mocking
the people of the Lord Almighty.(HF)
11 The Lord will be awesome(HG) to them
when he destroys all the gods(HH) of the earth.(HI)
Distant nations will bow down to him,(HJ)
all of them in their own lands.

Cush

12 “You Cushites,[q](HK) too,
will be slain by my sword.(HL)

Assyria

13 He will stretch out his hand against the north
    and destroy Assyria,(HM)
leaving Nineveh(HN) utterly desolate
    and dry as the desert.(HO)
14 Flocks and herds(HP) will lie down there,
    creatures of every kind.
The desert owl(HQ) and the screech owl(HR)
    will roost on her columns.
Their hooting will echo through the windows,
    rubble will fill the doorways,
the beams of cedar will be exposed.
15 This is the city of revelry(HS)
    that lived in safety.(HT)
She said to herself,
“I am the one! And there is none besides me.”(HU)
What a ruin she has become,
    a lair for wild beasts!(HV)
All who pass by her scoff(HW)
    and shake their fists.(HX)

Jerusalem

Woe to the city of oppressors,(HY)
    rebellious(HZ) and defiled!(IA)
She obeys(IB) no one,
    she accepts no correction.(IC)
She does not trust(ID) in the Lord,
she does not draw near(IE) to her God.
Her officials within her
    are roaring lions;(IF)
her rulers are evening wolves,(IG)
who leave nothing for the morning.(IH)
Her prophets are unprincipled;
    they are treacherous people.(II)
Her priests profane the sanctuary
and do violence to the law.(IJ)
The Lord within her is righteous;(IK)
    he does no wrong.(IL)
Morning by morning(IM) he dispenses his justice,
and every new day he does not fail,(IN)
yet the unrighteous know no shame.(IO)

Jerusalem Remains Unrepentant

“I have destroyed nations;
    their strongholds are demolished.
I have left their streets deserted,
    with no one passing through.
Their cities are laid waste;(IP)
    they are deserted and empty.
Of Jerusalem I thought,
    ‘Surely you will fear me
    and accept correction!’(IQ)
Then her place of refuge[r] would not be destroyed,
nor all my punishments come upon[s] her.
But they were still eager
to act corruptly(IR) in all they did.
Therefore wait(IS) for me,”
    declares the Lord,
“for the day I will stand up to testify.[t]
I have decided to assemble(IT) the nations,(IU)
    to gather the kingdoms
and to pour out my wrath(IV) on them—
    all my fierce anger.(IW)
The whole world will be consumed(IX)
by the fire of my jealous anger.

Restoration of Israel’s Remnant

“Then I will purify the lips of the peoples,
that all of them may call(IY) on the name of the Lord(IZ)
and serve(JA) him shoulder to shoulder.
10 From beyond the rivers of Cush[u](JB)
    my worshipers, my scattered people,
    will bring me offerings.(JC)
11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame(JD)
for all the wrongs you have done to me,(JE)
because I will remove from you
    your arrogant boasters.(JF)
Never again will you be haughty
    on my holy hill.(JG)
12 But I will leave within you
    the meek(JH) and humble.
The remnant of Israel
will trust(JI) in the name of the Lord.
13 They(JJ) will do no wrong;(JK)
    they will tell no lies.(JL)
A deceitful tongue
will not be found in their mouths.(JM)
They will eat and lie down(JN)
and no one will make them afraid.(JO)

14 Sing, Daughter Zion;(JP)
    shout aloud,(JQ) Israel!
Be glad and rejoice(JR) with all your heart,
    Daughter Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away your punishment,
he has turned back your enemy.
The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you;(JS)
never again will you fear(JT) any harm.(JU)
16 On that day
    they will say to Jerusalem,
“Do not fear, Zion;
do not let your hands hang limp.(JV)
17 The Lord your God is with you,
    the Mighty Warrior who saves.(JW)
He will take great delight(JX) in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,(JY)
but will rejoice over you with singing.”(JZ)

18 “I will remove from you
all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals,
which is a burden and reproach for you.
19 At that time I will deal
    with all who oppressed(KA) you.
I will rescue the lame;
    I will gather the exiles.(KB)
I will give them praise(KC) and honor
in every land where they have suffered shame.
20 At that time I will gather you;
at that time I will bring(KD) you home.
I will give you honor(KE) and praise(KF)
among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes[v](KG)
    before your very eyes,”
says the Lord.
