The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo(A) from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,(B) across from Jericho.(C) There the Lord showed(D) him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan,(E) all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea,(F) the Negev(G) and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms,(H) as far as Zoar.(I) Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath(J) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(K) when I said, ‘I will give it(L) to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross(M) over into it.”

And Moses the servant of the Lord(N) died(O) there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor,(P) but to this day no one knows where his grave is.(Q) Moses was a hundred and twenty years old(R) when he died, yet his eyes were not weak(S) nor his strength gone.(T) The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab(U) thirty days,(V) until the time of weeping and mourning(W) was over.

Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit[b] of wisdom(X) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(Y) So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Since then, no prophet(Z) has risen in Israel like Moses,(AA) whom the Lord knew face to face,(AB) 11 who did all those signs and wonders(AC) the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials(AD) and to his whole land. 12 For no one has(AE) ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds(AF) that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Joshua Installed as Leader

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord,(AG) the Lord said to Joshua(AH) son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River(AI) into the land(AJ) I am about to give to them(AK)—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot,(AL) as I promised Moses.(AM) Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,(AN) and from the great river, the Euphrates(AO)—all the Hittite(AP) country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.(AQ) No one will be able to stand against you(AR) all the days of your life. As I was with(AS) Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake(AT) you. Be strong(AU) and courageous,(AV) because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors(AW) to give them.

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey(AX) all the law(AY) my servant Moses(AZ) gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left,(BA) that you may be successful wherever you go.(BB) Keep this Book of the Law(BC) always on your lips;(BD) meditate(BE) on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.(BF) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;(BG) do not be discouraged,(BH) for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”(BI)

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:(BJ) 11 “Go through the camp(BK) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions(BL) ready. Three days(BM) from now you will cross the Jordan(BN) here to go in and take possession(BO) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,(BP) Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest(BQ) by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives,(BR) your children and your livestock may stay in the land(BS) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,(BT) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.(BU) You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”(BV)

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.(BW) 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you.(BX) Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey(BY) it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!(BZ)

Footnotes

  1. Deuteronomy 34:6 Or He was buried
  2. Deuteronomy 34:9 Or Spirit

but now I am going to him who sent me.(A) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(B) Rather, you are filled with grief(C) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(D) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(E) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(F) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(G) because I am going to the Father,(H) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(I) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(J) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(K) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(L) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(M) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(N) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(O)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(P) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(Q) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(R) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(S) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(T) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(U) but I will see you again(V) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(W) 23 In that day(X) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(Y) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(Z) and your joy will be complete.(AA)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(AB) a time is coming(AC) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(AD) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(AE) and have believed that I came from God.(AF) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(AG)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(AH) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(AI) that you came from God.”(AJ)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(AK) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(AL) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(AM) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(AN)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(AO) In this world you will have trouble.(AP) But take heart! I have overcome(AQ) the world.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(A) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(B) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(C) For you granted him authority over all people(D) that he might give eternal life(E) to all those you have given him.(F) Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(G) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(H) I have brought you glory(I) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(J) And now, Father, glorify me(K) in your presence with the glory I had with you(L) before the world began.(M)
