Healing the Lame Beggar

Now (A)Peter and John were going up to the temple at the [a]ninth hour, (B)the hour of prayer. And (C)a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried along, whom they (D)used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (E)in order to beg [b]alms of those who were entering the temple. When he saw (F)Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. But Peter, along with John, (G)fixed his gaze on him and said, “Look at us!” And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: (H)In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!” And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. [c](I)With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And (J)all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to (K)sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter’s Second Sermon

11 While he was clinging to (L)Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called [d](M)portico of Solomon, full of amazement. 12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13 (N)The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, (O)the God of our fathers, has glorified His [e](P)servant Jesus, the one whom (Q)you delivered and disowned in the presence of (R)Pilate, when he had (S)decided to release Him. 14 But you disowned (T)the Holy and Righteous One and (U)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the [f](V)Prince of life, the one whom (W)God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are (X)witnesses. 16 And on the basis of faith (Y)in His name, it is [g]the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

17 “And now, brethren, I know that you acted (Z)in ignorance, just as your (AA)rulers did also. 18 But the things which (AB)God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, (AC)that His [h]Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 Therefore (AD)repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that (AE)times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the [i]Christ appointed for you, 21 (AF)whom heaven must receive until the [j]period of (AG)restoration of all things about which (AH)God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. 22 Moses said, ‘(AI)The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet [k]like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. 23 (AJ)And it will be that every (AK)soul that does not heed that prophet (AL)shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 And likewise, (AM)all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days. 25 It is you who are (AN)the sons of the prophets and of the (AO)covenant which God [l]made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘(AP)And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 For you (AQ)first, God (AR)raised up His [m]Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”

Peter and John Arrested

As they were speaking to the people, the priests and (AS)the captain of the temple guard and (AT)the Sadducees (AU)came up to them, being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming [n](AV)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them and (AW)put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the [o]message believed; and (AX)the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

On the next day, their (AY)rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; and (AZ)Annas the high priest was there, and (BA)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?” Then Peter, [p](BB)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “[q](BC)Rulers and elders of the people, if we are [r]on trial today for (BD)a benefit done to a sick man, [s]as to how this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that [t](BE)by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom (BF)God raised from the dead—[u]by [v]this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 [w](BG)He is the (BH)stone which was (BI)rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. 12 And there is salvation in (BJ)no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

Threat and Release

13 Now as they observed the (BK)confidence of (BL)Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and (BM)began to recognize them [x]as having been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15 But when they had ordered them to leave the [y](BN)Council, they began to confer with one another, 16 saying, “(BO)What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a (BP)noteworthy [z]miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man (BQ)in this name.” 18 And when they had summoned them, they (BR)commanded them not to speak or teach at all [aa]in the name of Jesus. 19 But (BS)Peter and John answered and said to them, “(BT)Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20 for (BU)we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” 21 When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) (BV)on account of the people, because they were all (BW)glorifying God for what had happened; 22 for the man was more than forty years old on whom this [ab]miracle of healing had been performed.

23 When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O [ac]Lord, it is You who (BX)made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who (BY)by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said,

(BZ)Why did the [ad]Gentiles rage,
And the peoples devise futile things?
26 (CA)The kings of the earth [ae]took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His [af](CB)Christ.’

27 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy [ag](CC)servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both (CD)Herod and (CE)Pontius Pilate, along with (CF)the [ah]Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and (CG)Your purpose predestined to occur. 29 And [ai]now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may (CH)speak Your word with all (CI)confidence, 30 while You extend Your hand to heal, and [aj](CJ)signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy [ak](CK)servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the (CL)place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all (CM)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to (CN)speak the word of God with (CO)boldness.

Sharing among Believers

32 And the [al]congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them [am]claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but (CP)all things were common property to them. 33 And (CQ)with great power the apostles were giving (CR)testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. 34 For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses (CS)would sell them and bring the [an]proceeds of the sales 35 and (CT)lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be (CU)distributed to each as any had need.

36 Now Joseph, a Levite of (CV)Cyprian birth, who was also called (CW)Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of [ao](CX)Encouragement), 37 and who owned a tract of land, sold it and brought the money and (CY)laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and (CZ)kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife’s [ap]full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he (DA)laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (DB)Satan filled your heart to lie (DC)to the Holy Spirit and to (DD)keep back some of the price of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not [aq]under your control? Why is it that you have [ar]conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but (DE)to God.” And as he heard these words, Ananias (DF)fell down and breathed his last; and (DG)great fear came over all who heard of it. The young men got up and (DH)covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.

Now there elapsed an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land [as](DI)for such and such a price?” And she said, “Yes, [at]that was the price.” Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to (DJ)put (DK)the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” 10 And immediately she (DL)fell at his feet and breathed her last, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And (DM)great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard of these things.

12 [au]At the hands of the apostles many (DN)signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all with one accord in (DO)Solomon’s portico. 13 But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, (DP)the people held them in high esteem. 14 And all the more (DQ)believers in the Lord, multitudes of men and women, were constantly (DR)added to their number, 15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by (DS)at least his shadow might fall on any one of them. 16 Also the [av]people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick [aw]or afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.

Imprisonment and Release

17 But the high priest rose up, along with all his associates (that is (DT)the sect of (DU)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. 18 They laid hands on the apostles and (DV)put them in a public jail. 19 But during the night (DW)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, 20 “Go, stand and [ax]speak to the people in the temple [ay](DX)the whole message of this Life.” 21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple (DY)about daybreak and began to teach.

Now when (DZ)the high priest and his associates came, they called (EA)the [az]Council together, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison house for them to be brought. 22 But (EB)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back, 23 saying, “We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (EC)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what [ba]would come of this. 25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” 26 Then (ED)the captain went along with (EE)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for (EF)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

27 When they had brought them, they stood them [bb]before (EG)the Council. The high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We gave you (EH)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and [bc]yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and (EI)intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “(EJ)We must obey God rather than men. 30 (EK)The God of our fathers (EL)raised up Jesus, [bd]whom you had (EM)put to death by hanging Him on a [be]cross. 31 (EN)He is the one whom God exalted [bf]to His right hand as a [bg](EO)Prince and a (EP)Savior, to grant (EQ)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are (ER)witnesses [bh]of these things; and (ES)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

33 But when they heard this, they were (ET)cut [bi]to the quick and intended to kill them. 34 But a Pharisee named (EU)Gamaliel, a (EV)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in (EW)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, (EX)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him. [bj]But he was killed, and all who [bk]followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of (EY)the census and drew away some people after him; he too perished, and all those who [bl]followed him were scattered. 38 So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or [bm]action (EZ)is of men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found (FA)fighting against God.”

40 They [bn]took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they (FB)flogged them and ordered them not to [bo]speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. 41 So they went on their way from the presence of the [bp](FC)Council, (FD)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame (FE)for His name. 42 (FF)And every day, in the temple and [bq]from house to house, they [br]kept right on teaching and [bs](FG)preaching Jesus as the [bt]Christ.

Choosing of the Seven

Now [bu]at this time while the (FH)disciples were (FI)increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the [bv](FJ)Hellenistic Jews against the native (FK)Hebrews, because their (FL)widows were being overlooked in (FM)the daily serving of food. So the twelve summoned the [bw]congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. Therefore, (FN)brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, (FO)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. But we will (FP)devote ourselves to prayer and to the [bx]ministry of the word.” The statement found approval with the whole [by]congregation; and they chose (FQ)Stephen, a man (FR)full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and (FS)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and [bz]Nicolas, a [ca](FT)proselyte from (FU)Antioch. And these they brought before the apostles; and after (FV)praying, they (FW)laid their hands on them.

(FX)The word of God kept on spreading; and (FY)the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to (FZ)the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great (GA)wonders and [cb]signs among the people. But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both (GB)Cyrenians and (GC)Alexandrians, and some from (GD)Cilicia and [cc](GE)Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. 11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders and the scribes, and they (GF)came up to him and dragged him away and brought him [cd]before (GG)the [ce]Council. 13 They put forward (GH)false witnesses who said, “This man incessantly speaks against this (GI)holy place and the Law; 14 for we have heard him say that (GJ)this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and alter (GK)the customs which Moses handed down to us.” 15 And fixing their gaze on him, all who were sitting in the [cf](GL)Council saw his face like the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Defense

The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

And he said, “Hear me, (GM)brethren and fathers! (GN)The God of glory (GO)appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in [cg]Haran, and said to him, ‘(GP)Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’ (GQ)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in [ch]Haran. (GR)From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living. But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, even when he had no child, (GS)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him. But (GT)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would [ci]be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. And whatever nation to which they will be in bondage I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and (GU)after that they will come out and [cj]serve Me in this place.’ And He (GV)gave him [ck]the covenant of circumcision; and so (GW)Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and (GX)Isaac became the father of Jacob, and (GY)Jacob of the twelve (GZ)patriarchs.

“The patriarchs (HA)became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his afflictions, and (HB)granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.

11 “Now (HC)a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers [cl]could find no food. 12 But (HD)when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time. 13 On the second visit (HE)Joseph [cm]made himself known to his brothers, and (HF)Joseph’s family was disclosed to Pharaoh. 14 Then (HG)Joseph sent word and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, (HH)seventy-five [cn](HI)persons in all. 15 And (HJ)Jacob went down to Egypt and there he and our fathers died. 16 From there they were removed to [co](HK)Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of [cp]Hamor in [cq]Shechem.

17 “But as the (HL)time of the promise was approaching which God had assured to Abraham, (HM)the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, 18 until (HN)there arose another king over Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph. 19 It was he who took (HO)shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would [cr](HP)expose their infants and they would not survive. 20 It was at this time that (HQ)Moses was born; and he was lovely [cs]in the sight of God, and he was nurtured three months in his father’s home. 21 And after he had been set outside, (HR)Pharaoh’s daughter [ct]took him away and nurtured him as her own son. 22 Moses was educated in all (HS)the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds. 23 But when he was approaching the age of forty, (HT)it entered his [cu]mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel. 24 And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian. 25 And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them [cv]deliverance [cw]through him, but they did not understand. 26 (HU)On the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting together, and he tried to reconcile them in peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren, why do you injure one another?’ 27 But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘(HV)Who made you a ruler and judge over us? 28 (HW)You do not mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ 29 At this remark, (HX)Moses fled and became an alien in the land of [cx]Midian, where he (HY)became the father of two sons.

30 “After forty years had passed, (HZ)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, there came the voice of the Lord: 32 (IA)I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and would not venture to look. 33 (IB)But the Lord said to him,(IC)Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. 34 (ID)I have certainly seen the oppression of My people in Egypt and have heard their groans, and I have come down to rescue them; [cy](IE)come now, and I will send you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses whom they (IF)disowned, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one whom God [cz]sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the [da]help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush. 36 (IG)This man led them out, performing (IH)wonders and [db]signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the (II)wilderness for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘(IJ)God will raise up for you a prophet [dc]like me from your brethren.’ 38 This is the one who was in (IK)the [dd]congregation in the wilderness together with (IL)the angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received (IM)living (IN)oracles to pass on to you. 39 Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but (IO)repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, 40 (IP)saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egyptwe do not know what happened to him.’ 41 [de]At that time (IQ)they made a [df]calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in (IR)the works of their hands. 42 But God (IS)turned away and delivered them up to [dg]serve the [dh]host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘(IT)It was not to Me that you offered victims and sacrifices (IU)forty years in the wilderness, was it, O house of Israel? 43 (IV)You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god [di]Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will remove you beyond Babylon.’

44 “Our fathers had (IW)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it (IX)according to the pattern which he had seen. 45 And having received it in their turn, our fathers (IY)brought it in with [dj]Joshua upon dispossessing the [dk]nations whom God drove out before our fathers, until the time of David. 46 (IZ)David found favor in God’s sight, and (JA)asked that he might find a dwelling place for the [dl]God of Jacob. 47 But it was (JB)Solomon who built a house for Him. 48 However, (JC)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

49 (JD)Heaven is My throne,
And earth is the footstool of My feet;
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
Or what place is there for My repose?
50 (JE)Was it not My hand which made all these things?’

51 “You men who are (JF)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did. 52 (JG)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of (JH)the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers (JI)you have now become; 53 you who received the law as (JJ)ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

Stephen Put to Death

54 Now when they heard this, they were (JK)cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him. 55 But being (JL)full of the Holy Spirit, he (JM)gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing (JN)at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the (JO)heavens opened up and (JP)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse. 58 When they had (JQ)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and (JR)the witnesses (JS)laid aside their robes at the feet of (JT)a young man named Saul. 59 They went on stoning Stephen as he (JU)called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then (JV)falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, (JW)do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he [dm](JX)fell asleep.

Saul Persecutes the Church

(JY)Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death.

And on that day a great persecution [dn]began against (JZ)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all (KA)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and (KB)Samaria, except the apostles. Some devout men buried Stephen, and made loud lamentation over him. But (KC)Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house, and (KD)dragging off men and women, he would put them in prison.

Peter Heals a Lame Beggar

One day Peter and John(A) were going up to the temple(B) at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.(C) Now a man who was lame from birth(D) was being carried to the temple gate(E) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg(F) from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(G) walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping,(H) and praising God. When all the people(I) saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful,(J) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter Speaks to the Onlookers

11 While the man held on to Peter and John,(K) all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade.(L) 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,(M) the God of our fathers,(N) has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over(O) to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate,(P) though he had decided to let him go.(Q) 14 You disowned the Holy(R) and Righteous One(S) and asked that a murderer be released to you.(T) 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead.(U) We are witnesses(V) of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus,(W) this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

17 “Now, fellow Israelites,(X) I know that you acted in ignorance,(Y) as did your leaders.(Z) 18 But this is how God fulfilled(AA) what he had foretold(AB) through all the prophets,(AC) saying that his Messiah would suffer.(AD) 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out,(AE) that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah,(AF) who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him(AG) until the time comes for God to restore everything,(AH) as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.(AI) 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.(AJ) 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’[a](AK)

24 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets(AL) who have spoken have foretold these days. 25 And you are heirs(AM) of the prophets and of the covenant(AN) God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’[b](AO) 26 When God raised up(AP) his servant, he sent him first(AQ) to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin

The priests and the captain of the temple guard(AR) and the Sadducees(AS) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(AT) They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(AU) until the next day. But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(AV) to about five thousand.

The next day the rulers,(AW) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(AX) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(AY) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(AZ) If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(BA) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(BB) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(BC) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is

“‘the stone you builders rejected,
    which has become the cornerstone.’[c](BD)

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”(BE)

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John(BF) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(BG) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(BH) 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(BI) and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”(BJ) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(BK) and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(BL) 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(BM) You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking(BN) about what we have seen and heard.”(BO)

21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(BP) were praising God(BQ) for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

The Believers Pray

23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(BR) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(BS) 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(BT)

“‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
against the Lord
    and against his anointed one.[d][e](BU)

27 Indeed Herod(BV) and Pontius Pilate(BW) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(BX) whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(BY) 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(BZ) 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(CA) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”(CB)

31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(CC) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(CD) and spoke the word of God(CE) boldly.(CF)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(CG) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(CH) to the resurrection(CI) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(CJ) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(CK) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(CL) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(CM)

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(CN) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(CO)

Ananias and Sapphira

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself,(CP) but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.(CQ)

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan(CR) has so filled your heart(CS) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit(CT) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?(CU) Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?(CV) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”(CW)

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.(CX) And great fear(CY) seized all who heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,(CZ) and carried him out and buried him.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”(DA)

Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?(DB) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.(DC) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.(DD) 11 Great fear(DE) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(DF) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(DG) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(DH) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(DI) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(DJ) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(DK) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(DL)

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(DM) of the Sadducees,(DN) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(DO) 19 But during the night an angel(DP) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(DQ) and brought them out.(DR) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(DS)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(DT) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(DU)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(DV) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(DW) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(DX) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(DY) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(DZ) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(EA)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(EB) 30 The God of our ancestors(EC) raised Jesus from the dead(ED)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(EE) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(EF) as Prince and Savior(EG) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(EH) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(EI) and so is the Holy Spirit,(EJ) whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they were furious(EK) and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,(EL) a teacher of the law,(EM) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(EN) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(EO) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(EP)

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(EQ) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing(ER) because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.(ES) 42 Day after day, in the temple courts(ET) and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news(EU) that Jesus is the Messiah.(EV)

The Choosing of the Seven

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing,(EW) the Hellenistic Jews[f](EX) among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows(EY) were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.(EZ) So the Twelve gathered all the disciples(FA) together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God(FB) in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters,(FC) choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit(FD) and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them(FE) and will give our attention to prayer(FF) and the ministry of the word.”

This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen,(FG) a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit;(FH) also Philip,(FI) Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed(FJ) and laid their hands on them.(FK)

So the word of God spread.(FL) The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly,(FM) and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Stephen Seized

Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs(FN) among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene(FO) and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia(FP) and Asia(FQ)—who began to argue with Stephen. 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.(FR)

11 Then they secretly(FS) persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”(FT)

12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.(FU) 13 They produced false witnesses,(FV) who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place(FW) and against the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place(FX) and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”(FY)

15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin(FZ) looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Stephen’s Speech to the Sanhedrin

Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”

To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers,(GA) listen to me! The God of glory(GB) appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.(GC) ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[g](GD)

“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(GE) He gave him no inheritance here,(GF) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(GG) even though at that time Abraham had no child. God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(GH) But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[h](GI) Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(GJ) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(GK) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(GL) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(GM)

“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(GN) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(GO) But God was with him(GP) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(GQ)

11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(GR) 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.(GS) 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,(GT) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.(GU) 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,(GV) seventy-five in all.(GW) 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.(GX) 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.(GY)

17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(GZ) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[i](HA) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(HB)

20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[j] For three months he was cared for by his family.(HC) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(HD) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(HE) and was powerful in speech and action.

23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’

27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(HF) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[k] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(HG)

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(HH) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(HI) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[l] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(HJ)

33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(HK) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[m](HL)

35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(HM) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(HN) and performed wonders and signs(HO) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(HP) and for forty years in the wilderness.(HQ)

37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[n](HR) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(HS) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(HT) and he received living words(HU) to pass on to us.(HV)

39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(HW) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[o](HX) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(HY) 42 But God turned away from them(HZ) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(IA) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[p](IB) beyond Babylon.

44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(IC) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(ID) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(IE) It remained in the land until the time of David,(IF) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[q](IG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(IH)

48 “However, the Most High(II) does not live in houses made by human hands.(IJ) As the prophet says:

49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.(IK)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[r](IL)

51 “You stiff-necked people!(IM) Your hearts(IN) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(IO) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(IP) 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(IQ) but have not obeyed it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(IR) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(IS) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(IT) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(IU) and the Son of Man(IV) standing at the right hand of God.”

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(IW) and began to stone him.(IX) Meanwhile, the witnesses(IY) laid their coats(IZ) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(JA)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(JB) 60 Then he fell on his knees(JC) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(JD) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(JE)

And Saul(JF) approved of their killing him.

The Church Persecuted and Scattered

On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(JG) throughout Judea and Samaria.(JH) Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. But Saul(JI) began to destroy the church.(JJ) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
