Christ Crucified

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the [a]testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you (A)except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (B)I was with you (C)in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching (D)were not with persuasive words of [b]human wisdom, (E)but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the (F)power of God.

Spiritual Wisdom

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God [c]ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for (G)had they known, they would not have (H)crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written:

(I)“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 But (J)God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the (K)spirit of the man which is in him? (L)Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but (M)the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the [d]Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 (N)But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For (O)“who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” (P)But we have the mind of Christ.

Sectarianism Is Carnal

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to (Q)babes in Christ. I fed you with (R)milk and not with solid food; (S)for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and [e]behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?

Watering, Working, Warning

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but (T)ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? (U)I planted, (V)Apollos watered, (W)but God gave the increase. So then (X)neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, (Y)and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

For (Z)we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are (AA)God’s building. 10 (AB)According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid (AC)the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than (AD)that which is laid, (AE)which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day (AF)will declare it, because (AG)it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

16 (AH)Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone [f]defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Avoid Worldly Wisdom

18 (AI)Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, (AJ)“He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, (AK)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For (AL)all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. 23 And (AM)you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

Stewards of the Mysteries of God

Let a man so consider us, as (AN)servants of Christ (AO)and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human [g]court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know of nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. (AP)Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to (AQ)light the hidden things of darkness and (AR)reveal the [h]counsels of the hearts. (AS)Then each one’s praise will come from God.

Fools for Christ’s Sake

Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be [i]puffed up on behalf of one against the other. For who [j]makes you differ from another? And (AT)what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

You are already full! (AU)You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us—and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you! For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a (AV)spectacle [k]to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We are (AW)fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! (AX)We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! 11 To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. 12 (AY)And we labor, working with our own hands. (AZ)Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 13 being defamed, we [l]entreat. (BA)We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

Paul’s Paternal Care

14 I do not write these things to shame you, but (BB)as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for (BC)in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, (BD)imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent (BE)Timothy to you, (BF)who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will (BG)remind you of my ways in Christ, as I (BH)teach everywhere (BI)in every church.

18 (BJ)Now some are [m]puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. 19 (BK)But I will come to you shortly, (BL)if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. 20 For (BM)the kingdom of God is not in word but in (BN)power. 21 What do you want? (BO)Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

Immorality Defiles the Church

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even [n]named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s (BP)wife! (BQ)And you are [o]puffed up, and have not rather (BR)mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. (BS)For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. In the (BT)name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, (BU)with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, (BV)deliver such a one to (BW)Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord [p]Jesus.

(BX)Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that (BY)a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore [q]purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed (BZ)Christ, our (CA)Passover, was sacrificed [r]for us. Therefore (CB)let us keep the feast, (CC)not with old leaven, nor (CD)with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Immorality Must Be Judged

I wrote to you in my epistle (CE)not to [s]keep company with sexually immoral people. 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go (CF)out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company (CG)with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—(CH)not even to eat with such a person.

12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore (CI)“put away from yourselves the evil person.”

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(A) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[a] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(B) I came to you(C) in weakness(D) with great fear and trembling.(E) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(F) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(G) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(H)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(I) but not the wisdom of this age(J) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(K) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(L) that has been hidden(M) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(N) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(O) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[b]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(P)

10 these are the things God has revealed(Q) to us by his Spirit.(R)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(S) except their own spirit(T) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(U) of the world,(V) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(W) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[c] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(X) but considers them foolishness,(Y) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(Z) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[d](AA)

But we have the mind of Christ.(AB)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(AC) but as people who are still worldly(AD)—mere infants(AE) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(AF) for you were not yet ready for it.(AG) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(AH) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(AI) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(AJ) And what is Paul? Only servants,(AK) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(AL) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(AM) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(AN) you are God’s field,(AO) God’s building.(AP)

10 By the grace God has given me,(AQ) I laid a foundation(AR) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(AS) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(AT) because the Day(AU) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(AV) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(AW) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(AX)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(AY) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(AZ) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(BA) by the standards of this age,(BB) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(BC) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[e];(BD) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[f](BE) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(BF) All things are yours,(BG) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(BH) or Cephas[g](BI) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(BJ)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(BK) and Christ is of God.

The Nature of True Apostleship

This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants(BL) of Christ and as those entrusted(BM) with the mysteries(BN) God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience(BO) is clear, but that does not make me innocent.(BP) It is the Lord who judges me.(BQ) Therefore judge nothing(BR) before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.(BS) He will bring to light(BT) what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.(BU)

Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.”(BV) Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.(BW) For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive?(BX) And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich!(BY) You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die(BZ) in the arena. We have been made a spectacle(CA) to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ,(CB) but you are so wise in Christ!(CC) We are weak, but you are strong!(CD) You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.(CE) 12 We work hard with our own hands.(CF) When we are cursed, we bless;(CG) when we are persecuted,(CH) we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage(CI) of the world—right up to this moment.

Paul’s Appeal and Warning

14 I am writing this not to shame you(CJ) but to warn you as my dear children.(CK) 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father(CL) through the gospel.(CM) 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me.(CN) 17 For this reason I have sent to you(CO) Timothy,(CP) my son(CQ) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(CR)

18 Some of you have become arrogant,(CS) as if I were not coming to you.(CT) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(CU) if the Lord is willing,(CV) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(CW) talk but of power.(CX) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(CY) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(CZ) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(DA) and have put out of your fellowship(DB) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(DC) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(DD) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(DE) to Satan(DF) for the destruction of the flesh,[h][i] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(DG)

Your boasting is not good.(DH) Don’t you know that a little yeast(DI) leavens the whole batch of dough?(DJ) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(DK) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(DL) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(DM) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(DN) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[j](DO) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(DP) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(DQ)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(DR) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(DS) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[k](DT)
