追述 神的作为训诲后世
亚萨的训诲诗。
78 我的民哪！你们要留心听我的教训，
侧耳听我口中的言语。（本节在《马索拉文本》包括细字标题）
2 我要开口用比喻，
把古时隐秘的事说出来，
3 就是我们所听过所知道的，
也是我们的列祖告诉我们的，
4 我们不把这些事向他们的子孙隐瞒，
却要把耶和华应得的赞美、他的能力，
和他所行的奇事，
都向后代的人述说。
5 他在雅各设立法度，
在以色列中制订律法，
就是他吩咐我们的列祖，
去教训他们的子孙的，
6 好使后代的人，包括将要出生的儿女，都可以知道；
他们也要起来，告诉他们的子孙，
7 使他们信靠 神，
不忘记 神的作为，
谨守他的诫命；
8 免得他们像他们的列祖，
成了顽梗悖逆的一代，
心不坚定的一代，
他们的心对 神不忠。
9 以法莲的子孙，虽然备有弓箭，
在争战的日子，却转身逃走。
10 他们不谨守 神的约，
不肯遵行他的律法。
11 他们忘记了 神的作为，
和他显给他们看的奇事。
12 他在埃及地，在琐安的田野，
在他们列祖的眼前，行了奇事。
13 他把海分开，领他们走过去，
又使海水直立像一道堤坝。
14 白日他用云彩，
夜间他用火光引导他们。
15 他在旷野使盘石裂开，
给他们水喝，多如深渊的水。
16 他使水从盘石中涌出来，
使水好象江河一般流下。
17 但他们仍然犯罪顶撞他，
在干旱之地仍然悖逆至高者。
18 他们心里试探 神，
随着自己的欲望要求食物。
19 他们妄论 神，说：
“ 神可以在旷野摆设筵席吗？
20 他虽曾击打盘石，使水涌出来，
好象江河泛滥，
他还能赐粮食吗？
他还能为自己的子民预备肉食吗？”
21 因此耶和华听见了，就大怒；
有烈火在雅各烧起，
有怒气向以色列发作。
22 因为他们不相信 神，
不倚靠他的拯救。
23 然而，他吩咐天上的云彩，
打开天上的门户。
24 他降吗哪给他们吃，
把天上的食物赐给他们。
25 于是人吃了天使的食物，
是 神赐下的食粮，使他们饱足。
26 他从天空刮起东风，
施能力领出南风。
27 他降肉食给他们，多如尘土；
又降飞鸟给他们，多如海沙。
28 他使飞鸟落在他们的营中，
在他们住处的四围。
29 他们吃了，而且吃得很饱，
这样， 神把他们所愿的都赐给他们了。
30 他们还没有因所愿的满足，
食物仍在他们口中的时候，
31 神的怒气就向他们发作，
杀了他们中间最肥壮的人，
击倒了以色列的年轻人。
32 虽然经历了这一切，他们仍然犯罪；
尽管看见这些奇事，他们仍不相信。
33 所以 神使他们的日子在虚空中消逝，
使他们的岁月在惊恐中完结。
34 神击杀他们的时候，他们就寻求他；
他们回转过来，切切求问 神。
35 他们也想起 神是他们的盘石，
至高的 神是他们的救赎主。
36 但他们仍然用口欺骗他，
用舌头向他说谎。

使以色列的圣者忧伤。
42 他们忘记了他的能力（“他的能力”直译是“他的手”），
就是他救赎他们脱离敌人的日子，
43 他怎样在埃及显神迹，
在琐安的田野行奇事。
44 他把他们的江河都变为血，
使他们不能喝河流的水。
45 他使成群的苍蝇到他们中间来，吞吃他们；
又使青蛙来毁灭他们。
46 他把他们的农产交给蚱蜢，
把他们辛劳的收获交给蝗虫。
47 他用冰雹摧毁他们的葡萄树，
用严霜冻坏他们的桑树。
48 又把他们的牲畜交给冰雹，
把他们的群畜交给闪电。
49 他使猛烈的怒气、忿怒、愤恨、患难，
好象一群降灾的使者，临到他们中间。
50 他为自己的怒气修平了路，
不惜使他们死亡，
把他们的性命交给瘟疫。
51 他在埃及击杀了所有的长子，
在含的帐棚中击杀了他们强壮时生的头胎子。
52 他却把自己的子民领出来好象领羊群，
在旷野引导他们像引导群畜一样。
53 他带领他们平平安安地走过去，所以他们不惧怕；
海却淹没了他们的仇敌。
54 他领他们进入自己圣地的境界，
到他右手所得的这山地。
55 他在他们面前把外族人赶出去，
用绳子量地，分给他们作为产业，
又使以色列众支派的人居住在自己的帐棚里。
56 但他们仍然试探和悖逆至高的 神，
不谨守他的法则。
57 他们背信不忠，像他们的列祖一样；
他们改变了，如同不可靠的弓。
58 因他们的邱坛，惹起他的怒气，
因他们雕刻的偶像，激起他的愤恨。
59 神听见就大怒，
完全弃绝了以色列。
60 他丢弃了在示罗的居所，
就是他在世人中间居住的帐棚。
61 他又把象征他权能的约柜交给人掳去，
把他的荣美交在敌人的手里，
62 并且把自己的子民交给刀剑，
向自己的产业大发烈怒。
63 他们的青年被火吞灭，
他们的少女也听不见结婚的喜歌。
64 他们的祭司倒在刀下，
他们的寡妇却不能哀哭。
65 那时主好象从睡眠中醒过来，
如同勇士酒后清醒一样。
66 他击退了他的敌人，
使他们永远蒙羞受辱。
67 他弃绝约瑟的帐棚，
不拣选以法莲支派，
68 却拣选了犹大支派，
他所爱的锡安山。
69 他建造了自己的圣所好象在高天之上，
又像他所建立永存的大地。
70 他拣选了自己的仆人大卫，
把他从羊圈中召出来；
71 他领他出来，使他不再跟着那些母羊，
却要牧养他的子民雅各，
和他的产业以色列。
72 于是大卫以正直的心牧养他们，
灵巧地引导他们。

78 1 He showeth how God of his mercy chose his Church of the posterity of Abraham, 8 Reproaching the stubborn rebellion of their fathers, that the children might not only understand. 11 That God of his free mercy made his Covenant with their ancestors, 17 But also seeing them so malicious and perverse, might be ashamed, and so turn wholly to God. In this Psalm the holy Ghost hath comprehended, as it were, the sum of all God’s benefits, to the intent the ignorant and gross people might see in few words the effect of the whole histories of the Bible.
A Psalm to give [a]instruction, committed to Asaph.
1 Hear my [b]doctrine, O my people: incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will declare high sentences of old.
3 Which we have heard and known, and our [c]fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their children, but to the generation to come we will show the praise of the Lord, his power also, and his wonderful works that he hath done:
5 How he established a [d]testimony in Jacob, and ordained a Law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should teach their children:
6 That the [e]posterity might know it, and the children, which should be born, should stand up, and declare it to their children.
7 That they might [f]set their hope on God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
8 And not to be as their [g]fathers, a disobedient and rebellious generation: a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful unto God.
9 The children of [h]Ephraim being armed and shooting with the bow, turned back in the day of battle.
10 They kept not the Covenant of God, but refused to walk in his Law,
11 And forgate his acts, and his wonderful works that he had showed them.
12 He did marvelous things in the sight of their [i]fathers in the land of Egypt; even in the field of Zoan.
13 (A)He divided the Sea, and led them through: he made also the waters to stand as an heap.
14 (B)In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.
15 (C)He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as of the great depths.
16 (D)He brought floods also out of the stony rock, so that he made the waters to descend like the rivers.
17 Yet they [j]sinned still against him, and provoked the Highest in the wilderness,
18 And tempted God in their hearts in [k]requiring meat for their lust.
19 (E)They spake against God also, saying, Can God [l]prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 (F)Behold, he smote the rock, that the water gushed out, and the streams overflowed: can he give bread also? or prepare flesh for his people?
21 Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry, and the (G)fire was kindled in Jacob, and also wrath came upon Israel,
22 Because they believed not in God, and [m]trusted not in his help.
23 Yet he had commanded the [n]clouds above, and had opened the doors of heaven,
24 And had rained down Manna upon them for to eat, and had given them of the wheat of heaven.
25 (H)Man did eat the bread of Angels: he sent them meat enough.
26 He caused the [o]East wind to pass in the heaven: and through his power he brought in the South wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowl as the sand of the sea.
28 And he made it fall in the midst of their camp, even round about their habitations.
29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their desire.
30 They were not turned from their [p]lusts, but the meat was yet in their mouths,
31 When the wrath of God came even upon them, and slew [q]the strongest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
32 For all this they [r]sinned still, and believed not his wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years hastily.
34 And when he [s]slew them, they sought him, and they returned, and sought God early.
35 And they remembered that God was their strength, and the most high God their redeemer.
36 But they flattered him with their mouth, and dissembled with him with their tongue.
37 For their [t]heart was not upright with him: neither were they faithful in his covenant.
38 Yet he being merciful, [u]forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not, but oft times called back his anger, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 For he remembered that they were flesh: yea, a wind that passeth and cometh not again.
40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness? and grieve him in the desert?
41 Yea, they [v]returned and tempted God, and [w]limited the Holy one of Israel.
42 They [x]remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy,
43 Nor him that set his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan,
44 And turned their rivers into blood, and their floods, that they could not drink.
45 He sent [y]a swarm of flies among them, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He [z]gave also their fruits unto the caterpillar, and their labor unto the grasshopper.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their wild fig trees with the hailstone.
48 He gave their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to the thunderbolts.
49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, indignation and wrath, and vexation by the sending out of [aa]evil angels.
50 He made a way to his anger: he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life to the pestilence,
51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt, even the [ab]beginning of their strength in the tabernacles of [ac]Ham.
52 But he made his people to go out like sheep, and led them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 Yea, he carried them out safely, and they [ad]feared not, and the Sea covered their enemies.
54 And he brought them unto the borders of his [ae]Sanctuary: even to this Mountain which his right hand purchased.
55 (I)He cast out the heathen also before them, and caused them to fall to the lot of his inheritance, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.
56 Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies,
57 But turned back, and dealt [af]falsely like their fathers: they turned like a deceitful bow.
58 And they [ag]provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to wrath with their graven images.
59 God heard this and was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel,
60 So that he [ah]forsook the habitation of Shiloh, even the Tabernacle where he dwelt among men,
61 And delivered his [ai]power into captivity, and his beauty into the enemy’s hand.
62 And he gave up his people to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.
63 The fire [aj]devoured their chosen men, and their maids were not [ak]praised.
64 Their Priests fell by the sword, and their [al]widows lamented not.
65 But the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and as a strong man that after his [am]wine crieth out,
66 And smote his enemies in the hinder parts, and put them to a perpetual shame.
67 Yet he refused the tabernacle of [an]Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 But chose the tribe of Judah, and mount Zion which he loved.
69 And he [ao]built his Sanctuary as an high palace, like the earth, which he established forever.
70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.
71 Even from behind the ewes with young, brought he him to feed his people in Jacob, and his inheritance in Israel.
72 So [ap]he fed them according to the simplicity of his heart, and guided them by the discretion of his hands.

78 Mga kasimanwa,[a] pamatii ninyo ang akon mga pagpanudlo.
2 Tudluan ko kamo paagi sa mga paanggid.[b]
Sugiran ko kamo sang tinago nga mga kamatuoran sang una
3 nga nahibaluan na naton,
kay ginsugid ini sa aton sang aton mga katigulangan.
4 Indi naton ini pagtaguon sa aton mga kabataan;
isugid naton ini sa masunod nga mga henerasyon.
Sugiran ta sila sang gahom sang Ginoo kag sang iya dalayawon kag makatilingala nga mga binuhatan.
5 Ginhatagan niya sang kasuguan ang katawhan sang Israel nga mga kaliwat ni Jacob.
Ginmanduan niya ang aton mga katigulangan nga itudlo ini sa ila mga kabataan,
6 agod ang masunod nga henerasyon makahibalo man sini,
kag matudlo man nila ini sa ila mga kabataan.
7 Sa sini nga paagi magasalig sila sa Dios kag indi nila pagkalimtan ang iya mga ginhimo kundi tumanon nila ang iya mga sugo.
8 Indi sila mangin pareho sa ila mga katigulangan nga mga matig-a sing ulo, indi matinumanon, indi malig-on ang ila pagsalig sa Dios, kag indi matutom sa iya.
9 Ang mga soldado sang Efraim, bisan may armas sila nga mga pana, nagpalalagyo sang tion sang inaway.
10 Wala nila gintuman ang ila kasugtanan sa Dios;
wala nila ginsunod ang iya kasuguan.
11 Ginkalimtan nila ang iya makatilingala nga mga binuhatan nga ginpakita sa ila.
12 Naghimo ang Dios sang milagro didto sa Zoan, sa duta sang Egipto
kag nakita ini sang aton[c] mga katigulangan.
13 Gintunga niya ang dagat kag ginpaagi sila;
ginhimo niya ang tubig nga daw mga pader.
14 Kon adlaw, ginatuytuyan niya sila paagi sa panganod,
kag kon gab-i, paagi sa kasanag sang kalayo.
15 Ginpalitik niya ang mga bato sa kamingawan kag nagtubod ang tubig
kag ginpaayawan niya sila inom sang tubig nga daw halin sa kadadalman sang duta.
16 Ginpatubod niya ang tubig sa bato kag nag-ilig ang tubig nga daw sa suba.
17 Pero ang aton mga katigulangan nagpadayon sa pagpakasala sa iya.
Didto sa kamingawan nagrebelde sila sa Labing Mataas nga Dios.
18 Gintilawan nila sing hungod ang Dios paagi sa pagpangayo sang kalan-on nga gusto gid nila.
19 Gin-insulto nila ang Dios paagi sa pagsiling, “Makapapunsyon bala ang Dios diri sa kamingawan?
20 Matuod nga ginpahampak niya ang bato kag nagsagawak ang tubig,
pero makahatag bala siya sang tinapay kag karne sa aton nga iya katawhan?”
21 Gani naakig ang Ginoo sang mabatian niya sila.
Sa iya kaakig sa ila nga mga Israelinhon, nga mga kaliwat ni Jacob, ginsalakay niya sila sang kalayo.
22 Kay wala sila sing pagtuo sa iya, kag wala sila magsalig nga luwason niya sila.
23 Pero bisan pa sina, ginmanduan niya ang langit nga mag-abri,
24 kag ginpaulanan niya sila sang pagkaon nga ginatawag manna.
Ginhatag niya sa ila ini nga pagkaon nga halin sa langit agod ila kaunon.
25 Sila nga tawo nagkaon sang pagkaon sang mga anghel, kag ginpagustuhan gid sila sang Dios sini.
26 Ginpahuyop niya ang hangin nga halin sa sidlangan kag sa bagatnan paagi sa iya gahom.
27 Kag ginpaulanan niya sila sang mga pispis nga daw pareho kadamo sa balas sa baybayon.
28 Ginpahugpa niya ini sa palibot sang ila mga tolda didto sa ila nga kampo.
29 Gani nagkaon sila kag nagkalabusog, kay ginhatag sang Dios sa ila ang gusto nila.
30 Pero samtang nagapagusto sila sang kaon,
31 naakig ang Dios sa ila.
Ginpamatay niya ang makusog nga mga pamatan-on sang Israel.
32 Bisan pa sining tanan nga ginpanghimo niya, nagpadayon sila sa pagpakasala. Bisan naghimo siya sang mga milagro, wala sila nagtuo sa iya.
33 Gani gulpi lang niya gintapos ang ila kabuhi paagi sa hinali nga kalaglagan.
34 Sang ginpatay niya ang iban sa ila, ang nabilin nagdangop sa iya kag naghinulsol, nga nagahandom gid sa iya.
35 Nadumduman nila nga ang Labing Mataas nga Dios amo ang ila palalipdan nga bato kag manunubos.
36 Pero nagadayaw-dayaw lang sila sa iya. Mga butigon sila.
37 Indi sila mainunungon sa iya;
indi sila matutom sa ila kasugtanan sa iya.
38 Pero bisan pa sini, maluluy-on gihapon ang Dios sa ila.
Ginpatawad niya ang ila mga sala kag wala niya sila paglaglaga.
Sa madamo nga tion ginpunggan niya ang iya kaakig bisan puwerte na gid ang iya kaugot.
39 Naisip niya nga sila mga tawo lang, nga pareho sa nagalabay nga hangin nga nagakadula lang.
40 Pila ka beses sila nga nagrebelde sa Dios kag nagpasubo sa iya didto sa kamingawan.
41 Liwat-liwat nila nga gintilawan ang Dios;
ginsakit nila ang balatyagon sang Balaan nga Dios sang Israel.
42 Ginkalimtan nila ang iya gahom nga ginpakita sadtong tion nga ginluwas niya sila sa ila mga kaaway
43 kag sang tion nga ginhimo niya ang iya mga milagro kag makatilingala nga mga binuhatan didto sa Zoan, sa duta sang Egipto.
44 Ginhimo niya nga dugo ang mga suba kag mga sapa sang mga Egiptohanon,
kag tungod sini wala na sila sing mainom.
45 Nagpadala siya sang panong sang mga sapat-sapat sa pagpaantos sa ila,
kag sang mga paka sa paghalit sang ila mga duta.
46 Ginpakaon niya sa mga apan ang ila mga tanom kag mga patubas.
47 Ginpamatay niya ang ila mga ubas kag mga kahoy nga higera paagi sa ulan nga yelo.
48 Ginpamatay niya ang ila mga kasapatan paagi man sa ulan nga yelo kag sa kilat.
49 Tungod sa iya puwerte gid nga kaakig sa ila,
ginpadal-an niya sila sang mga anghel sa paglaglag sa ila.
50 Wala niya pagpunggi ang iya kaakig;
wala niya sila pagluwasa sa kamatayon,
kundi ginpamatay niya sila paagi sa mga kalalat-an.
51 Ginpamatay niya ang tanan nga kamagulangan nga lalaki sa Egipto,
nga amo ang lugar sang mga kaliwat ni Ham.
52 Dayon ginpaguwa niya sa Egipto ang iya katawhan nga pareho sa mga karnero
kag gintuytuyan niya sila sa kamingawan.
53 Gin-ubayan niya sila, gani wala sila mahadlok.
Pero ang ila mga kaaway nagkalalumos sa dagat.
54 Gindala niya sila sa duta nga iya ginpili, didto sa bukid[d] nga gin-agaw niya paagi sa iya gahom.
55 Gintabog niya ang mga pumuluyo didto palayo sa iya katawhan,
kag ginbahin-bahin niya ang duta sa mga tribo sang Israel agod ila panag-iyahan,
kag didto niya sila ginpaestar.
56 Pero gintilawan nila ang Labing Mataas nga Dios kag nagrebelde sila sa iya.
Wala nila gintuman ang iya mga sugo.
57 Nagpalayo sila kag nagluib sa Dios pareho sang ila mga katigulangan.
Indi sila masaligan pareho sa guba nga pana.
58 Ginpaimon kag ginpaakig nila ang Dios tungod sang ila mga dios-dios sa mga simbahan sa mataas nga mga lugar.
59 Nahibaluan[e] sang Dios ining ginhimo sang mga Israelinhon,
gani naakig siya kag ginsikway niya sila sing bug-os.
60 Ginbayaan niya ang iya tolda sa Shilo nga iya ginpuy-an diri sa kalibutan.
61 Gintugutan niya nga agawon sang kaaway ang Kahon sang Kasugtanan nga simbolo sang iya pagkagamhanan kag pagkahalangdon.
62 Naakig siya sa katawhan nga iya ginapanag-iyahan,
gani ginpapatay niya sila sa inaway.
63 Ginsunog ang ila bataon nga mga lalaki,
gani nawad-an sang palamanahon ang ila mga dalaga.
64 Nagkalamatay sa inaway ang ila mga pari,
kag ang ila mga balo nga wala makapangasubo para sa ila.[f]
65 Dayon daw sa nakamata ang Ginoo;
pareho siya sa isa ka makusog nga tawo nga ginpaisog sang bino.
66 Ginpatal-as niya ang iya mga kaaway;
ginpakahuy-an niya sila sa wala sing katapusan.
67 Wala niya pagpilia ang tribo ni Efraim[g] nga mga kaliwat ni Jose.
68 Sa baylo, ginpili niya ang tribo ni Juda kag ang Bukid sang Zion nga iya ginapakamahal.
69 Didto ginpatindog niya ang iya templo nga pareho kataas sa mga kabukiran, kag magapabilin ini hasta san-o pareho sang duta.
70-71 Ginpili sang Dios si David nga mangin iya alagad.
Ginkuha niya siya sa iya trabaho nga manugbantay sang karnero kag ginhimo nga hari sang Israel, ang katawhan nga iya ginapanag-iyahan.
Pareho si David sa isa ka manugbantay sang mga karnero,
72 gin-atipan niya ang mga Israelinhon sing sinsero
kag gindumalahan niya sila sing maayo.

A maskil[a] of Asaph.
1 My people, hear my teaching;(A)
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;(B)
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.(C)
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;(D)
we will tell the next generation(E)
the praiseworthy deeds(F) of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders(G) he has done.
5 He decreed statutes(H) for Jacob(I)
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,(J)
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget(K) his deeds
but would keep his commands.(L)
8 They would not be like their ancestors(M)—
a stubborn(N) and rebellious(O) generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,(P)
turned back on the day of battle;(Q)
10 they did not keep God’s covenant(R)
and refused to live by his law.(S)
11 They forgot what he had done,(T)
the wonders he had shown them.
12 He did miracles(U) in the sight of their ancestors
in the land of Egypt,(V) in the region of Zoan.(W)
13 He divided the sea(X) and led them through;
he made the water stand up like a wall.(Y)
14 He guided them with the cloud by day
and with light from the fire all night.(Z)
15 He split the rocks(AA) in the wilderness
and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
and made water flow down like rivers.
17 But they continued to sin(AB) against him,
rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(AC)
by demanding the food they craved.(AD)
19 They spoke against God;(AE)
they said, “Can God really
spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
and water gushed out,(AF)
streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
Can he supply meat(AG) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
his fire broke out(AH) against Jacob,
and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
or trust(AI) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
and opened the doors of the heavens;(AJ)
24 he rained down manna(AK) for the people to eat,
he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(AL) from the heavens
and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
birds(AM) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(AN)
he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
even while the food was still in their mouths,(AO)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
he put to death the sturdiest(AP) among them,
cutting down the young men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(AQ)
in spite of his wonders,(AR) they did not believe.(AS)
33 So he ended their days in futility(AT)
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(AU) him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(AV)
that God Most High was their Redeemer.(AW)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(AX)
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(AY) to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AZ)
he forgave(BA) their iniquities(BB)
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(BC)
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(BD)
a passing breeze(BE) that does not return.
40 How often they rebelled(BF) against him in the wilderness(BG)
and grieved him(BH) in the wasteland!
41 Again and again they put God to the test;(BI)
they vexed the Holy One of Israel.(BJ)
42 They did not remember(BK) his power—
the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,(BL)
43 the day he displayed his signs(BM) in Egypt,
his wonders(BN) in the region of Zoan.
44 He turned their river into blood;(BO)
they could not drink from their streams.
45 He sent swarms of flies(BP) that devoured them,
and frogs(BQ) that devastated them.
46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,(BR)
their produce to the locust.(BS)
47 He destroyed their vines with hail(BT)
and their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,
their livestock(BU) to bolts of lightning.
49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,(BV)
his wrath, indignation and hostility—
a band of destroying angels.(BW)
50 He prepared a path for his anger;
he did not spare them from death
but gave them over to the plague.
51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,(BX)
the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.(BY)
52 But he brought his people out like a flock;(BZ)
he led them like sheep through the wilderness.
53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;
but the sea engulfed(CA) their enemies.(CB)
54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,
to the hill country his right hand(CC) had taken.
55 He drove out nations(CD) before them
and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;(CE)
he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test
and rebelled against the Most High;
they did not keep his statutes.
57 Like their ancestors(CF) they were disloyal and faithless,
as unreliable as a faulty bow.(CG)
58 They angered him(CH) with their high places;(CI)
they aroused his jealousy with their idols.(CJ)
59 When God heard(CK) them, he was furious;(CL)
he rejected Israel(CM) completely.
60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,(CN)
the tent he had set up among humans.(CO)
61 He sent the ark of his might(CP) into captivity,(CQ)
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.
62 He gave his people over to the sword;(CR)
he was furious with his inheritance.(CS)
63 Fire consumed(CT) their young men,
and their young women had no wedding songs;(CU)
64 their priests were put to the sword,(CV)
and their widows could not weep.
65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,(CW)
as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.
66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.(CX)
67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;(CY)
68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,(CZ)
Mount Zion,(DA) which he loved.
69 He built his sanctuary(DB) like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.
70 He chose David(DC) his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep(DD) he brought him
to be the shepherd(DE) of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.
72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;(DF)
with skillful hands he led them.
