20 (A)Тогава излязоха всички синове Израилеви, и се събра цялото общество като един човек от Дан до Вирсавия и Галаадската земя пред Господа в Масифа.
2 Събраха се (пред Господа) началниците на целия народ, всички колена Израилеви, в събранието на народа Божий, – четиристотин хиляди пешаци меченосци.
3 Вениаминовите синове чуха, че синовете Израилеви са дошли в Масифа. И Израилевите синове попитаха: кажете, как е станало това зло?
4 (B)Левитът, мъжът на убитата жена, отговори и каза: дойдох с наложницата си да пренощувам в Гива Вениаминова;
5 и дигнаха се против мене жителите на Гива и през нощта заобиколиха зарад мене къщата; мене крояха да убият, а наложницата ми изтощиха (след като я изнасилваха), тъй че тя умря;
6 (C)аз взех наложницата си, нарязах я и я разпратих по всички области на владението Израилево, понеже те извършиха беззаконно и срамно дело в Израиля;
7 (D)ето, всички вие, синове Израилеви, разгледайте това дело и решете тук.
8 И дигна се целият народ като един човек и каза: никой няма да отиде в шатрата си и никой няма да се върне у дома си;
9 и ето какво ще сторим сега с Гива: (да отидем) против нея по жребие;
10 ще вземем по десет души на сто от всички Израилеви колена, по сто на хиляда и по хиляда на десет хиляди, за да донесат храна за народа, който ще иде против Гива Вениаминова да я накаже за срамотията, що е извършила против Израиля.
11 И всички израилтяни се събраха против града единодушно, като един човек.
12 И Израилевите колена пратиха да кажат на цялото Вениаминово коляно: каква гнусотия е извършена у вас!
13 (E)Предайте ония развратници, които са в Гива; ние ще ги убием и ще изкореним злото от Израиля. Но синовете Вениаминови не искаха да послушат гласа на братята си, синове Израилеви;
14 и синовете Вениаминови от градовете се събраха в Гива, за да отидат на война против синовете Израилеви.
15 И в оня ден Вениаминовите синове, които се бяха събрали от градовете, се наброяваха двайсет и шест хиляди души меченосци; освен това от жителите на Гива имаше отбрани на брой седемстотин;
16 (F)от целия тоя народ имаше седемстотин души отбрани, които бяха левичари, и те всички хвърляха с прашки камъни на косъм, без да погрешат.
17 А израилтяни, без Вениаминовите синове, се наброяваха четиристотин хиляди души меченосци; те всички бяха способни за война.
18 (G)Тогава Израилевите синове станаха и отидоха в Божия дом и попитаха Бога, думайки: кой от нас първом ще иде на бой против синовете Вениаминови? И Господ отговори: Иуда първом (ще отиде).
19 На сутринта синовете Израилеви станаха и се разположиха на стан пред Гива;
20 и излязоха израилтяните на бой против Вениамина, и наредиха се синовете Израилеви в боен ред близо до Гива.
21 Тогава излязоха синовете Вениаминови из Гива и простряха на земята в оня ден двайсет и две хиляди израилтяни.
22 Но израилският народ се съвзе и пак се нареди за бой на онова място, дето стояха предния ден.
23 И отидоха Израилевите синове и плакаха пред Господа до вечерта, и питаха Господа: да влезем ли пак в бой със синовете на брата си Вениамина? Господ каза: вървете против него.
24 И на втория ден синовете Израилеви настъпиха против синовете на Вениамина.
25 Вениамин излезе против тях из Гива на втория ден, и простряха на земята от синовете Израилеви още осемнайсет хиляди души меченосци.
26 Тогава всички Израилеви синове и целият народ тръгнаха и дойдоха в Божия дом, седяха там, плакаха пред Господа, постиха оня ден до вечерта, и принесоха Господу всесъжение и мирни жертви.
27 И питаха синовете Израилеви Господа (в това време ковчегът на завета Божий се намираше там,
28 и Финеес, син на Елеазара, сина Ааронов, стоеше пред него): да излезем ли пак на бой със синовете на брата си Вениамина или не? Господ каза: вървете. Утре ще го предам в ръцете ви.
29 (H)И постави Израил засада около Гива.
30 На третия ден излязоха синовете Израилеви против синовете на Вениамина и се наредиха за бой пред Гива, както по-напред.
31 Вениаминовите синове излязоха против народа и се отдалечиха от града, и почнаха, както по-преди, да убиват от народа по пътищата, от които един води за Ветил, а друг за Гива, през полето, и убиха до трийсет души израилтяни.
32 И Вениаминовите синове си казаха: те падат пред нас, както попреди. А Израилевите синове си рекоха: да бягаме от тях и да ги отвлечем от града на пътя. (Тъй и направиха.)
33 Всички израилтяни станаха от мястото си и се наредиха във Ваал-Тамара. А Израилевата засада се спускаше от мястото си от западна страна на Гива.
34 И се обърнаха срещу Гива десет хиляди души отбрани от цял Израил, и се почна жестока битка. Но Вениаминовите синове не знаеха, че ще ги сполети зло,
35 (I)а Господ разби Вениамина пред израилтяните, и израилтяните простряха в оня ден от синовете Вениаминови двайсет и пет хиляди и сто души меченосци.
36 Защото, когато Вениаминовите синове помислиха, че са разбили израилтяните, които им сториха място, понеже израилтяните се надяваха на засадата, която бяха поставили близо до Гива,
37 засадата побърза и се спусна към Гива, – влезе и порази с меч целия град.
38 Израилтяните си бяха уговорили знак със засадата, да нападнат, кога се дигне дим от града.
39 И тъй, когато израилтяните отстъпиха от мястото на битката, и Вениамин почна да поразява и свали до трийсет души израилтяни, като казваше: „пак падат пред нас, както и в предишните битки“,
40 (J)тогава почна да се издига от града дим като стълб. Вениамин погледа назад, и ето, от целия град възлиза дим към небето.
41 Израилтяните се върнаха, а Вениамин се уплаши, понеже видя, че го е зло сполетяло.
42 И побягнаха синовете Вениаминови от израилтяните по пътя към пустинята, но бидоха преследвани със сеч, и ония, които излизаха от градовете, ги избиваха там;
43 заобиколиха Вениамина и го преследваха до Менуха и поразяваха до самата източна страна на Гива.
44 И от синовете Вениаминови паднаха осемнайсет хиляди души, силни мъже.
45 Останалите се обърнаха и се спуснаха към пустинята, към скала Римон, шестстотин души, и останаха там в каменната планина Римон четири месеца.
46 Всички пък Вениаминови синове, паднали него ден, бяха двайсет и пет хиляди души меченосци, и всички бяха силни мъже.
47 (K)Останалите се обърнаха и побягнаха в пустинята, при скала Римон, и (израилтяните) избиха по пътищата още пет хиляди души; и ги гониха до Гидом и убиха от тях още две хиляди души.
48 А израилтяните се върнаха към синовете Вениаминови и ги поразиха с меч и людете в града, и добитъка, и всичко, каквото се срещаше (във всички градове), и с огън изгориха всички градове, които се намираха по пътя.

2 И людете от всичките краища, всички Израилеви племена, четиристотин хиляди мъже пешаци, които теглеха меч, се представиха в събранието на Божиите люде.
3 И вениаминците чуха, че израилтяните отишли в Масфа. И израилтяните казаха: Разправете ни как стана това зло.
4 И левитинът, мъжът на убитата жена, в отговор рече: Дойдох в Гавая Вениаминова, аз и наложницата ми, за да пренощуваме.
5 А гавайските мъже се подигнаха против мене, и през нощта обиколиха къщата в който бях; мене искаха да убият, а наложницата ми изнасилваха, та умря.
6 Затова взех наложницата си та я разсякох и я изпратих по всичките предели на Израилевото наследство; защото те извършиха разврат и безумие в Израиля.
7 Гледайте, вие израилтяните, всинца вие, съветвайте се тук помежду си, и дайте мнението си.
8 Тогава всичките люде станаха като един човек и казаха: Никоя от нас няма да отиде в шатъра си, нито ще се върне някой от нас в къщата си,
9 но ето сега какво ще направим на Гавая, ще отидем против нея по жребие;
10 и ще вземем по десет мъже на сто от всичките Израилеви племена, и по сто на хиляда, които да донесат храна на людете, та, като стигнат в Гавая Вениаминова, да им сторят според всичкото безумие, което те извършиха в Израиля.
11 И тъй, събраха се против града всичките Израилеви мъже, обединени като един човек.

20 И Израилевите мъже излязоха на бой против Вениамина; и опълчиха се Израилевите мъже на бой против тях в Гавая.
21 А вениаминците излязоха из Гавая, та в оня ден повалиха на земята двадесет и две хиляди мъже от Израиля.
22 Но людете, Израилевите мъже, се ободриха и опълчиха се пак на бой, на мястото, гдето бяха се опълчили първия ден.
23 Защото израилтяните бяха възлезли и плакали пред Господа до вечерта, и бяха се допитали до Господа, казвайки: Да възлезем ли пак на бой против потомците на брата ни Вениамина? И Господ беше казал: Възлезте против него.
24 И така, на втория ден израилтяните се приближиха при вениаминците.
25 А на втория ден Вениамин излезе из Гавая против тях та повали на земята още осемнадесет хиляди мъже от израилтяните; всички тия теглеха меч.
26 Тогава всичките израилтяни и всичките люде влязоха та дойдоха във Ветил и плакаха, и седнаха там пред Господа, и постиха в оня ден до вечерта; и принесоха всеизгаряния и примирителни жертви пред Господа.
27 После израилтяните се допитаха до Господа, (защото през ония дни ковчегът на Божия завет беше там,
28 и Финеес, син на Елеазара, Аароновият син, служеше пред него през ония дни), и запитаха: Да възлезем ли пак на бой против потомците на брата ни Вениамина? или да престанем? И Господ каза: Възлезте, защото утре ще ги предам в ръката ви.
29 Тогава Израил постави засада около Гавая.
30 И на третия ден израилтяните излязоха против вениаминците, та се опълчиха против Гавая както в предишните дни.
31 А вениаминците излязоха против людете, отвлякоха се от града, и почнаха както в предишните дни да поразяват людете по пътищата, (от които единият отива към Ветил, а другият към Гавая), и убиха в полето около тридесет мъже от Израиля.
32 Затова вениаминците си казаха: Те падат пред нас както по-напред. А израилтяните рекоха: Да побегнем и да ги отвлечем от града към пътищата.
33 Тогава всичките Израилеви мъже станаха от мястото си, та се опълчиха във Ваал-тамар, и засадата на Израиля изкочи от мястото си, от Гавайската ливада.
34 И дойдоха против Гавая десет хиляди отборни мъже от целия Израил, и битката ставаше ожесточена; но вениаминците не знаеха, че бедата ги застигаше.
35 Защото Господ порази Вениамина пред Израиля; и в оня ден израилтяните погубиха от вениаминците двадесет и пет хиляди и сто мъже; те всички теглеха меч.
36 И вениаминците видяха, че бяха поразени. Защото израилевите мъже отстъпиха пред вениаминците, като разчитаха на засадата, която бяха поставили против Гавая.
37 Тогава засадата побърза та се спусна върху Гавая; и засадата дебнеше напред, и поразиха целия град с острото на ножа.
38 А Израилевите мъже бяха определили знак с ония, които бяха в засадата, да направят да се издигне от града голям стълб дим.
39 И когато израилтяните отстъпиха в битката, Вениамин почна да поразява, и уби от израилтяните около тридесет мъже, защото си рекоха: Наистина те падат пред нас както при първата битка.
40 Но когато облакът почна да се издига от града в димен стълб, вениаминците погледнаха на назад, и, ето, целият град се издигаше в дим към небето.
41 Тогава се повърнаха Израилевите мъже; и Вениаминовите мъже се смутиха, защото видяха, че бедата ги постигна.
42 Затова обърнаха се пред Израилевите мъже към пътя за пустинята; но битката ги притисна; и те погубваха всред градовете ония които излизаха из тях.
43 Заобиколиха вениаминците, гониха ги, и тъпкаха ги лесно до срещу Гавая към изгрева на слънцето.
44 И паднаха от Вениамина осемнадесет хиляди мъже, - всички храбри мъже.
45 Прочее, те се обърнаха та побягнаха към пустинята в канарата Римон; а израилтяните набраха от тях пабирък по пътищата, пет хиляди мъже, после ги гониха до Гидом и там убиха от тях две хиляди мъже.
46 Така всичките, които паднаха в оня ден от Вениамина, бяха двадесет и пет хиляди мъже, които теглят меч, - всички храбри мъже.
47 А шестстотин мъже се обърнаха та побягнаха към пустинята в канарата Римон; и седяха в канарата Римон четири месеца.
48 А Израилевите мъже се обърнаха върху вениаминците, та го поразиха с острото на ножа, както градски човек, така и добитък, и всичко що се намираше; и предадоха на огън всичките градове, които намираха.

Israel’s War with the Benjamites
20 So (A)all the children of Israel came out, from (B)Dan to (C)Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the Lord (D)at Mizpah. 2 And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers (E)who drew the sword. 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.)
Then the children of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wicked deed happen?”
4 So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “My concubine and (F)I went into Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night. 5 (G)And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, (H)but instead they ravished my concubine so that she died. 6 So (I)I took hold of my concubine, cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of the inheritance of Israel, because they (J)committed lewdness and outrage in Israel. 7 Look! All of you are children of Israel; (K)give your advice and counsel here and now!”
8 So all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, nor will any turn back to his house; 9 but now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: We will go up (L)against it by lot. 10 We will take ten men out of every hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to make provisions for the people, that when they come to Gibeah in Benjamin, they may repay all the vileness that they have done in Israel.” 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man.
12 (M)Then the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you? 13 Now therefore, deliver up the men, (N)the [a]perverted men who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and (O)remove the evil from Israel!” But the children of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brethren, the children of Israel. 14 Instead, the children of Benjamin gathered together from their cities to Gibeah, to go to battle against the children of Israel. 15 And from their cities at that time (P)the children of Benjamin numbered twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred select men. 16 Among all this people were seven hundred select men who were (Q)left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair’s breadth and not miss. 17 Now besides Benjamin, the men of Israel numbered four hundred thousand men who drew the sword; all of these were men of war.
18 Then the children of Israel arose and (R)went up to [b]the house of God to (S)inquire of God. They said, “Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?”
The Lord said, (T)“Judah first!”
19 So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. 20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah. 21 Then (U)the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites. 22 And the people, that is, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and again formed the battle line at the place where they had put themselves in array on the first day. 23 (V)Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, “Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?”
And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”
24 So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day. 25 And (W)Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword.
26 Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, (X)went up and came to [c]the house of God and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 27 So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord ((Y)the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, 28 (Z)and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, (AA)stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?”
And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
29 Then Israel (AB)set men in ambush all around Gibeah. 30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times. 31 So the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city. They began to strike down and kill some of the people, as at the other times, in the highways (AC)(one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah) and in the field, about thirty men of Israel. 32 And the children of Benjamin said, “They are defeated before us, as at first.”
But the children of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.” 33 So all the men of Israel rose from their place and put themselves in battle array at Baal Tamar. Then Israel’s men in ambush burst forth from their position in the plain of Geba. 34 And ten thousand select men from all Israel came against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. (AD)But [d]the Benjamites did not know that disaster was upon them. 35 The Lord [e]defeated Benjamin before Israel. And the children of Israel destroyed that day twenty-five thousand one hundred Benjamites; all these drew the sword.
36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. (AE)The men of Israel had given ground to the Benjamites, because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah. 37 (AF)And the men in ambush quickly rushed upon Gibeah; the men in ambush spread out and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword. 38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of (AG)smoke rise up from the city, 39 whereupon the men of Israel would turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun [f]to strike and kill about thirty of the men of Israel. For they said, “Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle.” 40 But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, the Benjamites (AH)looked behind them, and there was the whole city going up in smoke to heaven. 41 And when the men of Israel turned back, the men of Benjamin panicked, for they saw that disaster had come upon them. 42 Therefore they [g]turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them, and whoever came out of the cities they destroyed in their midst. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and easily trampled them down as far as the front of Gibeah toward the east. 44 And eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these were men of valor. 45 Then [h]they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of (AI)Rimmon; and they cut down five thousand of them on the highways. Then they pursued them relentlessly up to Gidom, and killed two thousand of them. 46 So all who fell of Benjamin that day were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all these were [i]men of valor.
47 (AJ)But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon for four months. 48 And the men of Israel turned back against the children of Benjamin, and struck them down with the edge of the sword—from every city, men and beasts, all who were found. They also set fire to all the cities they came to.

The Israelites Punish the Benjamites
20 Then all Israel(A) from Dan to Beersheba(B) and from the land of Gilead came together as one(C) and assembled(D) before the Lord in Mizpah.(E) 2 The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men(F) armed with swords. 3 (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”
4 So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, “I and my concubine came to Gibeah(G) in Benjamin to spend the night.(H) 5 During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me.(I) They raped my concubine, and she died.(J) 6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance,(K) because they committed this lewd and outrageous act(L) in Israel. 7 Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do.(M)”
8 All the men rose up together as one, saying, “None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house. 9 But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll go up against it in the order decided by casting lots.(N) 10 We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah[a] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.” 11 So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.(O)
12 The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What about this awful crime that was committed among you?(P) 13 Now turn those wicked men(Q) of Gibeah over to us so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel.(R)”
But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. 14 From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites. 15 At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred able young men from those living in Gibeah. 16 Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred select troops who were left-handed,(S) each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.
17 Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fit for battle.
18 The Israelites went up to Bethel[b](T) and inquired of God.(U) They said, “Who of us is to go up first(V) to fight(W) against the Benjamites?”
The Lord replied, “Judah(X) shall go first.”
19 The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah. 20 The Israelites went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. 21 The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites(Y) on the battlefield that day. 22 But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day. 23 The Israelites went up and wept before the Lord(Z) until evening,(AA) and they inquired of the Lord.(AB) They said, “Shall we go up again to fight(AC) against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites?”
The Lord answered, “Go up against them.”
24 Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day. 25 This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites,(AD) all of them armed with swords.
26 Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord.(AE) They fasted(AF) that day until evening and presented burnt offerings(AG) and fellowship offerings(AH) to the Lord.(AI) 27 And the Israelites inquired of the Lord.(AJ) (In those days the ark of the covenant of God(AK) was there, 28 with Phinehas son of Eleazar,(AL) the son of Aaron, ministering before it.)(AM) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”
The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.(AN)”
29 Then Israel set an ambush(AO) around Gibeah. 30 They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before. 31 The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away(AP) from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads—the one leading to Bethel(AQ) and the other to Gibeah. 32 While the Benjamites were saying, “We are defeating them as before,”(AR) the Israelites were saying, “Let’s retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads.”
33 All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place(AS) on the west[c] of Gibeah.[d] 34 Then ten thousand of Israel’s able young men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize(AT) how near disaster was.(AU) 35 The Lord defeated Benjamin(AV) before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords. 36 Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten.
Now the men of Israel had given way(AW) before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush(AX) they had set near Gibeah. 37 Those who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.(AY) 38 The Israelites had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke(AZ) from the city,(BA) 39 and then the Israelites would counterattack.
The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the Israelites (about thirty), and they said, “We are defeating them as in the first battle.”(BB) 40 But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.(BC) 41 Then the Israelites counterattacked,(BD) and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come(BE) on them. 42 So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle. And the Israelites who came out of the towns cut them down there. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily[e] overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east. 44 Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.(BF) 45 As they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon,(BG) the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.
46 On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite(BH) swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters. 47 But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months. 48 The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.(BI)
