Focul Domnului

11 După o vreme poporul a început să se plângă în auzul Domnului că-i merge rău; Domnul a auzit şi s-a aprins de mânie. Focul Domnului s-a aprins împotriva lor şi a mistuit o parte din marginea taberei. 2 Atunci poporul a strigat către Moise; Moise s-a rugat Domnului şi focul s-a stins. 3 Locul acela s-a numit Tabera[a] pentru că focul Domnului s-a aprins împotriva lor.

Prepeliţele

4 După aceea, adunătura de oameni[b] care era în mijlocul lor a început să poftească cu nesaţ, astfel că şi israeliţii s-au plâns din nou şi au zis: „Cine ne va da carne să mâncăm? 5 Ne aducem aminte de peştele pe care-l mâncam fără plată în Egipt, de castraveţi, de pepeni, de praz, de ceapă şi de usturoi. 6 Acum însă ni s-a uscat sufletul! Nu mai este nimic înaintea ochilor noştri, decât mana aceasta!“

7 Mana era ca sămânţa de coriandru, iar la culoare era ca răşina. 8 Poporul umbla prin împrejurimi şi o aduna, o măcina în râşniţă sau o pisa într-o piuă mică, apoi o fierbea în oale şi făcea turte din ea; la gust era ca o turtă coaptă cu ulei. 9 Mana cădea în tabără în timpul nopţii, odată cu lăsarea rouăi.

10 Moise a auzit poporul plângând, fiecare în clanul lui şi la intrarea cortului lui. Atunci mânia Domnului s-a aprins foarte tare; Moise a înţeles că ceea ce făceau ei era un lucru rău. 11 Moise i-a zis Domnului:

– De ce te-ai purtat atât de rău cu robul Tău? De ce n-am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine şi ai lăsat asupra mea povara acestui popor? 12 Oare eu am conceput poporul acesta? I-am născut eu ca să-mi spui: „Poartă-i la sân cum poartă o doică un sugar“ înspre ţara pe care ai jurat părinţilor lor că le-o vei da? 13 De unde să iau carne pentru tot poporul acesta? Căci vin şi plâng înaintea mea şi zic: „Dă-ne carne să mâncăm!“ 14 Nu pot duce singur acest popor, căci este o povară prea grea pentru mine. 15 Dacă aşa te porţi cu mine, mai bine, Te rog, omoară-mă! Omoară-mă, dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine şi nu mă mai lăsa să-mi văd nenorocirea!

16 Domnul i-a răspuns lui Moise:

– Adună-Mi şaptezeci de bărbaţi dintre bătrânii lui Israel, despre care ştii că sunt sfetnici ai poporului şi supraveghetori peste el; adu-i la Cortul Întâlnirii ca să stea acolo împreună cu tine. 17 Eu Mă voi coborî şi îţi voi vorbi acolo; voi lua din Duhul Care este peste tine şi-L voi pune peste ei; ei vor purta povara poporului împreună cu tine şi astfel n-o vei mai purta singur.

18 Să spui poporului: „Sfinţiţi-vă pentru ziua de mâine; veţi mânca şi carne, pentru că v-aţi plâns în auzul Domnului, spunând: «Cine ne va da carne să mâncăm? Ne era mai bine în Egipt.» De aceea Domnul vă va da carne să mâncaţi. 19 Nu veţi mânca doar o zi sau două sau cinci sau zece sau douăzeci de zile, 20 ci o lună întreagă, până vă va ieşi pe nări şi vă veţi scârbi de ea, pentru că L-aţi respins pe Domnul Care este în mijlocul vostru, zicând: «De ce am ieşit oare din Egipt?»“

21 Dar Moise I-a zis:

– Poporul care este cu mine este de şase sute de mii de oameni care merg pe jos şi Tu zici: „Le voi da carne ca să mănânce o lună întreagă!“ 22 Sunt destule turme şi cirezi să tăiem? Este destul peşte în mare să prindem?

23 Domnul i-a răspuns lui Moise:

– Este oare mâna Domnului prea scurtă? Vei vedea acum dacă se va adeveri sau nu Cuvântul Meu.

24 Moise a ieşit şi a spus poporului cuvintele Domnului. A adunat şaptezeci de bătrâni din popor şi i-a pus să stea de jur împrejurul Cortului. 25 Apoi Domnul S-a coborât în nor, i-a vorbit lui Moise, a luat din Duhul Care era peste el şi L-a pus peste bătrâni; când Duhul S-a aşezat peste ei au început să profeţească. Dar după aceea n-au mai profeţit.

26 În tabără rămăseseră doi oameni: pe unul îl chema Eldad, iar pe celălalt Medad. Duhul S-a aşezat şi peste ei; aceştia erau dintre cei scrişi, dar nu se duseseră la Cort aşa că au profeţit în tabără.

27 Un tânăr a alergat şi i-a spus lui Moise:

– Eldad şi Medad profeţesc în tabără.

28 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, care-i slujea lui Moise încă din tinereţe, i-a zis acestuia:

– Moise, stăpânul meu, opreşte-i!

29 Dar Moise i-a răspuns:

– Eşti gelos de dragul meu? Eu îmi doresc ca tot poporul Domnului să fie alcătuit din profeţi şi Domnul să-Şi pună Duhul Său peste ei!

30 Apoi Moise şi sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel[c] s-au întors în tabără.

31 Domnul a trimis un vânt puternic care a adus prepeliţe dinspre mare şi le-a făcut să zboare[d] pe lângă tabără, cale de o zi, de o parte şi de alta a taberei, la o înălţime de doi coţi[e] de la pământ[f]. 32 Toată ziua şi toată noaptea şi apoi toată ziua următoare, poporul a adunat prepeliţe; cel care adunase cel mai puţin avea zece homeri[g]. Ei şi le-au întins în jurul taberei. 33 Dar în timp ce carnea le era încă între dinţi, înainte să o mestece, mânia Domnului s-a aprins împotriva poporului şi Domnul a lovit poporul cu o mare urgie. 34 Locul acela a fost numit Chibrot-Hataava[h] pentru că acolo i-au îngropat pe cei care au poftit.

35 De la Chibrot-Hataava, poporul a călătorit spre Haţerot şi s-a oprit acolo.

Miriam şi Aaron cârtesc împotriva lui Moise

12 Miriam şi Aaron au vorbit împotriva lui Moise din cauza femeii cuşite[i] cu care se căsătorise (pentru că el se căsătorise cu o femeie cuşită); 2 ei ziceau: „Oare numai prin Moise a vorbit Domnul? N-a vorbit şi prin noi?“ Domnul a auzit ce spuneau.

3 Moise era un om foarte blând[j], mai blând decât orice om de pe faţa pământului.

4 Deodată Domnul le-a zis lui Moise, lui Aaron şi lui Miriam:

– Veniţi toţi trei la Cortul Întâlnirii!

Şi cei trei au venit. 5 Atunci Domnul S-a coborât într-un stâlp de nor şi i-a chemat pe Aaron şi pe Miriam; amândoi au venit în faţă. 6 El le-a zis:

– Ascultaţi cuvintele Mele:

când este un profet între voi,
    Eu, Domnul, Mă fac cunoscut lui în vedenii
        şi îi vorbesc în visuri.
7 Nu tot aşa este şi cu robul Meu Moise;
    el este credincios peste toată casa Mea.
8 Cu el vorbesc gură către gură,
    clar, nu prin cuvântări enigmatice.
        El vede înfăţişarea Domnului.
Cum de nu v-aţi temut deci
    să vorbiţi împotriva robului Meu Moise?

9 Mânia Domnului s-a aprins împotriva lor şi El S-a îndepărtat. 10 Când norul s-a îndepărtat de pe Cortul Întâlnirii, Miriam era plină de lepră[k], albă ca zăpada. Aaron s-a întors spre Miriam şi a văzut că era plină de lepră. 11 Atunci Aaron i-a zis lui Moise:

– Stăpânul meu, nu ne pedepsi pentru un păcat pe care l-am făcut aşa de nebuneşte. 12 Nu lăsa ca ea să fie ca un copil născut mort, a cărui carne este pe jumătate mâncată când iese din pântecele mamei lui.

13 Moise a strigat către Domnul:

– O Dumnezeule, Te rog, vindec-o!

14 Dar Domnul i-a răspuns lui Moise:

– Dacă tatăl ei ar fi scuipat-o în faţă, n-ar fi fost ea făcută de ruşine timp de şapte zile? Să fie deci închisă afară din tabără timp de şapte zile, iar după aceea poate fi primită din nou.

15 Astfel Miriam a fost închisă în afara taberei timp de şapte zile. Poporul n-a mărşăluit mai departe până ce Miriam n-a fost primită din nou. 16 După aceea poporul a plecat din Haţerot şi şi-a aşezat tabăra în pustia Paran.

Poporul trimite iscoade în Canaan

13 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: 2 „Trimite oameni să iscodească ţara Canaanului pe care o dau israeliţilor. Din fiecare seminţie a părinţilor lor să trimiţi câte un om; toţi să fie dintre conducătorii lor.“ 3 Moise i-a trimis din pustia Paran, după porunca Domnului; toţi aceştia erau conducători ai israeliţilor. 4 Acestea sunt numele lor:

din seminţia lui Ruben: Şamua, fiul lui Zachur;

5 din seminţia lui Simeon: Şafat, fiul lui Hori;

6 din seminţia lui Iuda: Caleb, fiul lui Iefune;

7 din seminţia lui Isahar: Igal, fiul lui Iosif;

8 din seminţia lui Efraim: Osea, fiul lui Nun;

9 din seminţia lui Beniamin: Palti, fiul lui Rafu;

10 din seminţia lui Zabulon: Gadiel, fiul lui Sodi;

11 din seminţia lui Iosif (mai exact din seminţia lui Manase): Gadi, fiul lui Susi;

12 din seminţia lui Dan: Amiel, fiul lui Ghemali;

13 din seminţia lui Aşer: Setur, fiul lui Mihael;

14 din seminţia lui Neftali: Nahbi, fiul lui Vofsi;

15 din seminţia lui Gad: Gheuel, fiul lui Machi.

16 Acestea sunt numele oamenilor pe care i-a trimis Moise să iscodească ţara. Moise a schimbat numele lui Osea, fiul lui Nun, în Iosua[l].

17 Moise i-a trimis să iscodescă ţara Canaan, zicându-le: „Mergeţi de aici spre Neghev[m], urcaţi muntele 18 şi vedeţi cum este ţara: dacă poporul care locuieşte acolo este puternic sau slab, dacă sunt mulţi sau puţini, 19 dacă ţara în care locuiesc este bună sau rea, dacă oraşele în care locuiesc sunt ca nişte tabere sau sunt fortificate, 20 dacă ţara este bogată sau săracă şi dacă sunt copaci în ea sau nu. Fiţi curajoşi şi aduceţi câteva din roadele ţării.“ Era pe vremea când începeau să se coacă strugurii.

21 Şi astfel ei s-au dus şi au iscodit ţara, începând de la pustia Ţin până la Rehob, lângă Lebo-Hamat[n]. 22 Au urcat spre Neghev şi au ajuns la Hebron; acolo erau anachiţii Ahiman, Şeşai şi Talmai. (Hebronul a fost zidit cu şapte ani înaintea cetăţii Ţoan din Egipt). 23 Apoi au ajuns în valea Eşcol[o]; acolo au tăiat o ramură de viţă cu un singur ciorchine de struguri, după care doi dintre ei l-au dus pe un drug. De asemenea, au luat şi nişte rodii şi smochine. 24 Locul acela a fost numit valea Eşcol, din cauza ciorchinelui pe care israeliţii l-au tăiat de acolo.

Raportul iscoadelor

25 S-au întors de la iscodirea ţării după patruzeci de zile. 26 Au venit înaintea lui Moise, a lui Aaron şi a întregii adunări a israeliţilor în pustia Paran, la Kadeş; le-au adus veşti, lor şi întregii adunări, şi le-au arătat roadele ţării. 27 Ei i-au zis lui Moise: „Am ajuns în ţara în care ne-ai trimis şi, într-adevăr, acolo curge lapte şi miere; acesta este rodul ei. 28 Însă locuitorii ţării sunt puternici, iar cetăţile lor sunt fortificate şi mari; mai mult, i-am văzut acolo şi pe anachiţi. 29 Amalekiţii locuiesc în ţinutul Neghev; hitiţii, iebusiţii şi amoriţii locuiesc în munţi, iar canaaniţii locuiesc lângă mare şi de-a lungul Iordanului.“

30 Atunci Caleb a liniştit poporul înaintea lui Moise şi a zis:

– Haideţi să mergem şi să o ocupăm, căci sigur vom putea s-o cucerim!

31 Dar oamenii care au mers cu el au zis:

– Nu putem să înaintăm împotriva acestui popor pentru că este mai puternic decât noi.

32 Astfel ei au adus israeliţilor un raport nefavorabil despre ţara pe care au iscodit-o, zicând: „Ţara pe care am străbătut-o ca s-o iscodim este o ţară care îşi mănâncă locuitorii şi toţi oamenii pe care i-am văzut în ea sunt înalţi. 33 Acolo am văzut uriaşi[p] (anachiţii provin din uriaşi); când ne uitam la ei, parcă eram nişte lăcuste şi aşa ne considerau şi ei.“

Rebeliunea poporului şi judecata Domnului

14 Atunci toată adunarea a început să ţipe şi în noaptea aceea poporul a plâns. 2 Toţi israeliţii au cârtit împotriva lui Moise şi a lui Aaron; întreaga adunare le-a zis:

– Dacă am fi murit în ţara Egiptului sau dacă am fi murit în pustia aceasta! 3 De ce ne aduce Domnul în ţara aceasta? Ca să cădem ucişi de sabie? Soţiile noastre şi copiii noştri vor ajunge pradă; n-ar fi mai bine să ne întoarcem în Egipt?

4 Şi au zis unul către altul:

– Să ne alegem o căpetenie şi să ne întoarcem în Egipt!

5 Atunci Moise şi Aaron au căzut cu feţele la pământ înaintea întregii adunări a israeliţilor. 6 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, care erau dintre cei ce iscodiseră ţara, şi-au sfâşiat hainele 7 şi au zis întregii adunări a israeliţilor:

– Ţara pe care am străbătut-o noi ca să o iscodim este o ţară deosebit de bună. 8 Dacă Domnul Îşi găseşte plăcerea în noi, ne va duce în această ţară şi ne-o va da nouă; este o ţară în care curge lapte şi miere. 9 Dar nu vă răzvrătiţi împotriva Domnului şi nu vă temeţi de poporul din ţară, căci îi vom înghiţi de vii. Ei nu mai au nici o protecţie, iar Domnul este cu noi; nu vă temeţi de ei.

10 Dar întreaga adunare a zis să-i omoare cu pietre. Atunci slava Domnului s-a arătat la Cortul Întâlnirii, înaintea israeliţilor. 11 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise:

– Până când Mă va dispreţui poporul acesta? Până când vor refuza să creadă în Mine, în ciuda tuturor semnelor pe care le-am făcut între ei? 12 Îi voi lovi cu molimă şi-i voi dezmoşteni, iar pe tine te voi face un neam mai mare şi mai puternic decât ei.

13 Dar Moise i-a zis Domnului:

– Egiptenii vor auzi lucrul acesta, căci prin puterea Ta ai scos acest popor din mijlocul lor, 14 şi vor spune locuitorilor acestei ţări. Ei au auzit că Tu, Doamne, eşti în mijlocul acestui popor, că Tu, Doamne, eşti văzut de ei faţă în faţă, că norul Tău stă peste ei şi că mergi înaintea lor în timpul zilei într-un stâlp de nor, iar noaptea într-un stâlp de foc. 15 Dacă omori acest popor ca pe un singur om, atunci neamurile care au auzit despre Tine vor zice: 16 „Domnul n-a putut duce acest popor în ţara pe care a jurat că le-o va da şi i-a omorât în pustie.“ 17 De aceea, Te rog, lasă acum ca puterea Domnului să se arate în măreţia ei, după cum ai promis atunci când ai spus: 18 „Domnul este încet la mânie şi plin de îndurare[q], iertând nedreptatea şi păcatul, dar nu lasă nepedepsit pe cel vinovat, ci pedepseşte nelegiuirea părinţilor în copii şi în copiii copiilor lor până la a treia şi a patra generaţie.[r]“ 19 Te rog, iartă nedreptatea acestui popor, potrivit măreţiei îndurării Tale, aşa cum ai iertat acest popor din Egipt până aici.

20 Domnul a zis:

– I-am iertat aşa cum ai cerut; 21 dar, aşa cum este de adevărat faptul că Eu sunt viu şi că slava Domnului va umple tot pământul, 22 tot aşa nici unul din oamenii care au văzut slava Mea şi semnele pe care le-am făcut în Egipt şi în pustie şi care totuşi M-au ispitit de zece ori[s] până acum şi n-au ascultat glasul Meu, 23 nu vor vedea ţara pe care am jurat că le-o voi da părinţilor lor; nici unul dintre cei care m-au dispreţuit nu o vor vedea. 24 Dar pentru că robul Meu Caleb a fost călăuzit de un alt duh şi M-a urmat pe deplin, îl voi duce în ţara în care a fost, iar urmaşii lui o vor moşteni. 25 Amalekiţii şi canaaniţii locuiesc în vale. De aceea, mâine, întoarceţi-vă şi porniţi spre pustie, pe drumul către Marea Roşie[t].

26 Domnul le-a zis lui Moise şi lui Aaron: 27 „Până când va cârti această adunare rea împotriva Mea? Am auzit cârtirile pe care israeliţii le-au rostit împotriva Mea. 28 De aceea spuneţi-le: «Pe viaţa Mea, zice Domnul, că vă voi face precum aţi vorbit şi voi în auzul Meu: 29 trupurile voastre moarte vor cădea în pustia aceasta; dintre toţi cei de la vârsta de douăzeci de ani în sus care aţi fost număraţi şi înscrişi şi care aţi cârtit împotriva Mea, 30 nici unul nu veţi intra în ţara în care am jurat că vă voi aşeza, în afară de Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, şi Iosua, fiul lui Nun. 31 Pe copilaşii voştri însă, despre care aţi spus că vor fi de jaf, îi voi duce în ţară şi astfel ei vor cunoaşte ţara pe care voi aţi dispreţuit-o. 32 Cât despre voi, trupurile voastre vor cădea în pustia aceasta. 33 Copiii voştri vor fi păstori în pustie timp de patruzeci de ani şi vor purta vina necredincioşiei voastre până când trupurile voastre îşi vor găsi sfârşitul în pustie. 34 După cum timp de patruzeci de zile aţi iscodit ţara, tot aşa, timp de patruzeci de ani – câte un an pentru fiecare zi – vă veţi purta vina şi astfel veţi cunoaşte respingerea Mea.» 35 Eu, Domnul, am vorbit; cu siguranţă aşa îi voi face acestei adunări rele care s-a adunat împotriva Mea. În pustia aceasta îşi va găsi sfârşitul, aici va muri.“

36 Bărbaţii pe care Moise îi trimisese să iscodească ţara şi care, atunci când s-au întors, au făcut toată adunarea să cârtească împotriva lui, aducând un raport nefavorabil despre ţară, 37 deci oamenii aceia care aduseseră un raport rău despre ţară, au murit loviţi de o urgie înaintea Domnului. 38 Numai Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi Caleb, fiul lui Iefune, au rămas în viaţă dintre bărbaţii care se duseseră să iscodească ţara.

39 Când Moise le-a spus aceste cuvinte tuturor israeliţilor, poporul a fost cuprins de o mare jale. 40 Ei s-au trezit dis-de-dimineaţă şi s-au urcat pe vârful muntelui, zicând:

– Iată-ne! Ne vom duce în locul pe care l-a promis Domnul, căci ne-am dat seama că am păcătuit.

41 Dar Moise le-a zis:

– De ce continuaţi să încălcaţi porunca Domnului? Nu veţi reuşi. 42 Să nu vă urcaţi pentru că Domnul nu este cu voi şi astfel veţi fi învinşi de către duşmanii voştri. 43 Amalekiţii şi canaaniţii sunt înaintea voastră şi veţi cădea loviţi de sabie; fiindcă v-aţi abătut de la Domnul, El nu va fi cu voi.

44 Ei însă au îndrăznit să se urce pe înălţimile muntelui, chiar dacă Moise şi Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul nu au părăsit tabăra. 45 Atunci amalekiţii şi canaaniţii care locuiau în acea regiune muntoasă au venit, i-au învins şi i-au zdrobit până la Horma.

Daruri suplimentare diferitelor jertfe

15 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: 2 „Spune-le israeliţilor: «Când veţi intra în ţara în care veţi locui, pe care v-o voi da, 3 şi veţi aduce Domnului o jertfă mistuită de foc – fie o ardere de tot, fie o jertfă pentru împlinirea unui jurământ deosebit sau un dar de bunăvoie sau o jertfă cu ocazia sărbătorilor periodice – ca să faceţi din cirezile sau turmele voastre o aromă plăcută Domnului, 4 cel care va aduce Domnului o astfel de jertfă va trebui să aducă şi un dar de mâncare dintr-o zecime de efă[u] de făină aleasă, amestecată cu un sfert de hin[v] de ulei. 5 Pentru fiecare miel adus ca jertfă sau ca ardere de tot, să aducă şi un sfert de hin de vin ca jertfă de băutură. 6 Pentru fiecare berbec să aducă şi un dar de mâncare din două zecimi de efă[w] de făină aleasă, amestecată cu o treime de hin[x] de ulei, 7 şi o jertfă de băutură dintr-o treime de hin de vin, de o aromă plăcută Domnului. 8 Când vor aduce un bou ca jertfă sau ca ardere de tot pentru împlinirea unui jurământ deosebit sau ca jertfă de pace[y] în cinstea Domnului, 9 să aducă împreună cu boul un dar de mâncare din trei zecimi de efă[z] de făină aleasă, amestecată cu o jumătate de hin[aa] de ulei 10 şi o jertfă de băutură din jumătate de hin de vin ca jertfă mistuită de foc de o aromă plăcută Domnului.

11 Aşa să se facă pentru fiecare bou sau berbec sau pentru fiecare dintre miei sau iezi. 12 Aşa să se facă pentru fiecare în parte, oricare ar fi numărul lor.

13 Aşa să facă orice băştinaş care îşi va aduce jertfa mistuită de foc de o aromă plăcută Domnului. 14 Dacă vreun străin care locuieşte cu voi sau care se naşte printre voi de-a lungul generaţiilor, va dori să aducă o jertfă mistuită de foc de o aromă plăcută Domnului, el va trebui să facă aşa cum faceţi voi. 15 Să fie o singură poruncă pentru toată adunarea, atât pentru voi, cât şi pentru străinul care locuieşte printre voi, o poruncă veşnică pentru toate generaţiile; şi voi şi străinul veţi fi la fel înaintea Domnului. 16 Să fie aceeaşi lege şi aceeaşi poruncă atât pentru voi, cât şi pentru străinul care locuieşte cu voi.»“

17 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: 18 „Spune-le israeliţilor: «După ce veţi ajunge în ţara în care vă duc, 19 când veţi mânca din pâinea ţării, să aduceţi Domnului o jertfă prin ridicare. 20 Din prima parte a aluatului să aduceţi o turtă ca jertfă prin ridicare; să o aduceţi aşa cum aduceţi o jertfă prin ridicare din aria de treierat. 21 În toate generaţiile să aduceţi Domnului această jertfă din prima parte a aluatului vostru.

Jertfe pentru păcatul fără voie

22 Dacă păcătuiţi fără voie, neîmplinind toate aceste porunci pe care Domnul i le-a spus lui Moise 23 – tot ce v-a poruncit Domnul prin Moise, din ziua în care Domnul v-a dat porunci şi până acum, tot ce v-a spus de-a lungul generaţiilor – 24 deci dacă adunarea a păcătuit fără voie, fără să-şi dea seama, atunci toată adunarea să aducă un viţel ca ardere de tot de o aromă plăcută Domnului, împreună cu un dar de mâncare potrivit poruncii şi un ţap ca jertfă pentru păcat. 25 Preotul să facă ispăşire pentru toată adunarea israeliţilor şi ei vor fi iertaţi; căci au păcătuit fără voie şi şi-au adus atât jertfa, adică jertfa mistuită de foc pentru Domnul, cât şi jertfa de ispăşire înaintea Domnului pentru păcatul pe care l-au săvârşit. 26 Toată adunarea israeliţilor va fi iertată, atât ei, cât şi străinii care locuiesc în mijlocul lor, pentru că tot poporul a păcătuit fără voie.

27 Dacă cineva păcătuieşte fără voie, să aducă o capră de un an ca jertfă pentru păcat. 28 Preotul să facă ispăşire înaintea Domnului pentru cel care a păcătuit fără voie şi după ce va face ispăşire pentru el, va fi iertat. 29 Să fie aceeaşi lege pentru toţi aceia care păcătuiesc fără voie, atât pentru băştinaşul dintre israeliţi, cât şi pentru străinul care locuieşte în mijlocul lor.

30 Însă cel ce păcătuieşte cu voie[ab] – indiferent dacă este băştinaş sau străin – Îl huleşte pe Domnul; omul acela va trebui să fie nimicit din mijlocul poporului. 31 Fiindcă a dispreţuit Cuvântul Domnului şi a încălcat porunca Lui, omul acela să fie nimicit pe deplin şi să-şi poarte vina.»“

Pedeapsa pentru călcarea Sabatului

32 În timp ce israeliţii erau în pustie, au găsit un om adunând vreascuri în ziua de Sabat. 33 Cei care-l găsiseră adunând vreascuri l-au adus înaintea lui Moise, a lui Aaron şi a întregii adunări. 34 Pentru că încă nu era clar ce trebuie să i se facă, l-au pus sub pază. 35 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: „Omul acela să fie omorât; toată adunarea să-l omoare cu pietre în afara taberei.“ 36 Toată adunarea l-a dus în afara taberei şi l-a omorât cu pietre, aşa cum i-a poruncit Domnul lui Moise.

Ciucurii de la veşminte

37 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise: 38 „Spune-le israeliţilor să-şi facă ciucuri la colţurile hainelor în fiecare generaţie şi să pună un şnur albastru pe ciucurele de la fiecare colţ. 39 Când veţi avea ciucurii aceştia, să vă uitaţi la ei şi să vă aduceţi aminte de toate poruncile Domnului ca să le puteţi împlini; şi astfel nu veţi mai umbla după poftele inimilor voastre şi ale ochilor voştri prin care comiteţi adulter. 40 Aşa vă veţi aduce aminte să împliniţi toate poruncile Mele şi veţi fi sfinţi pentru Dumnezeul vostru. 41 Eu sunt Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, Care v-am scos din ţara Egiptului ca să fiu Dumnezeul vostru: Eu sunt Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru.“

Fire From the Lord

11 Now the people complained(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them(D) and consumed(E) some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed(F) to the Lord(G) and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah,[a](H) because fire from the Lord had burned among them.(I)

Quail From the Lord

4 The rabble with them began to crave other food,(J) and again the Israelites started wailing(K) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(L) 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(M)”

7 The manna was like coriander seed(N) and looked like resin.(O) 8 The people went around gathering it,(P) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew(Q) settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.

10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing(R) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble(S) on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?(T) 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant,(U) to the land you promised on oath(V) to their ancestors?(W) 13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(X) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(Y) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(Z)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”

16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(AA) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(AB) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(AC) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(AD) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(AE) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(AF)

18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(AG) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(AH) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(AI) Now the Lord will give you meat,(AJ) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(AK)—because you have rejected the Lord,(AL) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(AM)

21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(AN) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(AO)

23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(AP) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(AQ)”

24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(AR) and spoke with him,(AS) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(AT) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(AU) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(AV)—but did not do so again.

26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(AW) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

28 Joshua son of Nun,(AX) who had been Moses’ aide(AY) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(AZ)

29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(BA) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(BB) on them!”(BC) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(BD) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[b] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[c] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(BE) and before it could be consumed, the anger(BF) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(BG) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[d](BH) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(BI) and stayed there.

Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

12 Miriam(BJ) and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife,(BK) for he had married a Cushite. 2 “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?”(BL) And the Lord heard this.(BM)

3 (Now Moses was a very humble man,(BN) more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)

4 At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. 5 Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud;(BO) he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, 6 he said, “Listen to my words:

“When there is a prophet among you,
    I, the Lord, reveal(BP) myself to them in visions,(BQ)
    I speak to them in dreams.(BR)
7 But this is not true of my servant Moses;(BS)
    he is faithful in all my house.(BT)
8 With him I speak face to face,
    clearly and not in riddles;(BU)
    he sees the form of the Lord.(BV)
Why then were you not afraid
    to speak against my servant Moses?”(BW)

9 The anger of the Lord burned against them,(BX) and he left them.(BY)

10 When the cloud lifted from above the tent,(BZ) Miriam’s skin was leprous[e]—it became as white as snow.(CA) Aaron turned toward her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease,(CB) 11 and he said to Moses, “Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed.(CC) 12 Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.”

13 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “Please, God, heal her!(CD)”

14 The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face,(CE) would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp(CF) for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” 15 So Miriam was confined outside the camp(CG) for seven days,(CH) and the people did not move on till she was brought back.

16 After that, the people left Hazeroth(CI) and encamped in the Desert of Paran.(CJ)

Exploring Canaan

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore(CK) the land of Canaan,(CL) which I am giving to the Israelites.(CM) From each ancestral tribe(CN) send one of its leaders.”

3 So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(CO) 4 These are their names:

from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;

5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(CP)

7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(CQ)

9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;

12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;

13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;

14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;

15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore(CR) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun(CS) the name Joshua.)(CT)

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(CU) he said, “Go up through the Negev(CV) and on into the hill country.(CW) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(CX)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(CY)

21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(CZ) as far as Rehob,(DA) toward Lebo Hamath.(DB) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(DC) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(DD) the descendants of Anak,(DE) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(DF) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[f](DG) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(DH) and figs.(DI) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(DJ) they returned from exploring the land.(DK)

Report on the Exploration

26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(DL) in the Desert of Paran.(DM) There they reported to them(DN) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(DO) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(DP) Here is its fruit.(DQ) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(DR) We even saw descendants of Anak(DS) there.(DT) 29 The Amalekites(DU) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(DV) Jebusites(DW) and Amorites(DX) live in the hill country;(DY) and the Canaanites(DZ) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(EA)”

30 Then Caleb(EB) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(EC) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(ED) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(EE) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(EF) 33 We saw the Nephilim(EG) there (the descendants of Anak(EH) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(EI) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

The People Rebel

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(EJ) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(EK) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(EL) Or in this wilderness!(EM) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(EN) Our wives and children(EO) will be taken as plunder.(EP) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(EQ)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(ER)”

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(ES) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(ET) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(EU) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(EV) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(EW) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(EX) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(EY) and will give it to us.(EZ) 9 Only do not rebel(FA) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(FB) of the people of the land,(FC) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(FD) us.(FE) Do not be afraid of them.”(FF)

10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(FG) them. Then the glory of the Lord(FH) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(FI) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(FJ) in spite of all the signs(FK) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(FL) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(FM) greater and stronger than they.”(FN)

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(FO) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(FP) that you, Lord, are with these people(FQ) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(FR) that your cloud stays over them,(FS) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(FT) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(FU) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(FV)

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(FW) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(FX) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(FY) the sin of these people,(FZ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(GA)

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(GB) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(GC) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(GD) fills the whole earth,(GE) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(GF) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(GG)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(GH) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(GI) will ever see it.(GJ) 24 But because my servant Caleb(GK) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(GL) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(GM) 25 Since the Amalekites(GN) and the Canaanites(GO) are living in the valleys, turn(GP) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[g](GQ)”

26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(GR) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(GS) declares the Lord, I will do to you(GT) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(GU)—every one of you twenty years old or more(GV) who was counted in the census(GW) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(GX) I swore with uplifted hand(GY) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(GZ) and Joshua son of Nun.(HA) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(HB) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(HC) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(HD) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(HE)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(HF)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(HG) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(HH)”

36 So the men Moses had sent(HI) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(HJ) against him by spreading a bad report(HK) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(HL) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(HM) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(HN) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(HO)

39 When Moses reported this(HP) to all the Israelites, they mourned(HQ) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(HR) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(HS)”

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(HT) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(HU) 43 for the Amalekites(HV) and the Canaanites(HW) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(HX) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(HY) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(HZ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(IA) who lived in that hill country(IB) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(IC)

Supplementary Offerings

15 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘After you enter the land I am giving you(ID) as a home 3 and you present to the Lord food offerings from the herd or the flock,(IE) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord(IF)—whether burnt offerings(IG) or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings(IH) or festival offerings(II)— 4 then the person who brings an offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering(IJ) of a tenth of an ephah[h] of the finest flour(IK) mixed with a quarter of a hin[i] of olive oil. 5 With each lamb(IL) for the burnt offering or the sacrifice, prepare a quarter of a hin of wine(IM) as a drink offering.(IN)

6 “‘With a ram(IO) prepare a grain offering(IP) of two-tenths of an ephah[j](IQ) of the finest flour mixed with a third of a hin[k] of olive oil,(IR) 7 and a third of a hin of wine(IS) as a drink offering.(IT) Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(IU)

8 “‘When you prepare a young bull(IV) as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow(IW) or a fellowship offering(IX) to the Lord, 9 bring with the bull a grain offering(IY) of three-tenths of an ephah[l](IZ) of the finest flour mixed with half a hin[m] of olive oil, 10 and also bring half a hin of wine(JA) as a drink offering.(JB) This will be a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(JC) 11 Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat, is to be prepared in this manner. 12 Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare.(JD)

13 “‘Everyone who is native-born(JE) must do these things in this way when they present a food offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(JF) 14 For the generations to come,(JG) whenever a foreigner(JH) or anyone else living among you presents a food(JI) offering(JJ) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, they must do exactly as you do. 15 The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(JK) You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Lord: 16 The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigner residing among you.(JL)’”

17 The Lord said to Moses, 18 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land to which I am taking you(JM) 19 and you eat the food of the land,(JN) present a portion as an offering to the Lord.(JO) 20 Present a loaf from the first of your ground meal(JP) and present it as an offering from the threshing floor.(JQ) 21 Throughout the generations to come(JR) you are to give this offering to the Lord from the first of your ground meal.(JS)

Offerings for Unintentional Sins

22 “‘Now if you as a community unintentionally fail to keep any of these commands the Lord gave Moses(JT)— 23 any of the Lord’s commands to you through him, from the day the Lord gave them and continuing through the generations to come(JU)— 24 and if this is done unintentionally(JV) without the community being aware of it,(JW) then the whole community is to offer a young bull for a burnt offering(JX) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord,(JY) along with its prescribed grain offering(JZ) and drink offering,(KA) and a male goat for a sin offering.[n](KB) 25 The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven,(KC) for it was not intentional(KD) and they have presented to the Lord for their wrong a food offering(KE) and a sin offering.(KF) 26 The whole Israelite community and the foreigners residing among them will be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong.(KG)

27 “‘But if just one person sins unintentionally,(KH) that person must bring a year-old female goat for a sin offering.(KI) 28 The priest is to make atonement(KJ) before the Lord for the one who erred by sinning unintentionally, and when atonement has been made, that person will be forgiven.(KK) 29 One and the same law applies to everyone who sins unintentionally, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner residing among you.(KL)

30 “‘But anyone who sins defiantly,(KM) whether native-born or foreigner,(KN) blasphemes the Lord(KO) and must be cut off from the people of Israel.(KP) 31 Because they have despised(KQ) the Lord’s word and broken his commands,(KR) they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.(KS)’”

The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death

32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness,(KT) a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.(KU) 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him.(KV) 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die.(KW) The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.(KX)” 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him(KY) to death,(KZ) as the Lord commanded Moses.(LA)

Tassels on Garments

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come(LB) you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments,(LC) with a blue cord on each tassel. 39 You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember(LD) all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves(LE) by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts(LF) and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands(LG) and will be consecrated to your God.(LH) 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God.(LI) I am the Lord your God.(LJ)’”
