And after getting into a boat he crossed the sea and came to his own town.(A)

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

And some people were carrying to him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, child; your sins are forgiven.”(B) Then some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?(C) For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and walk’? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Stand up, take your bed, and go to your home.” And he stood up and went to his home. When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings.(D)

The Call of Matthew

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax-collection station, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

10 And as he sat at dinner[a] in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting[b] with Jesus and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(E) 12 But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners.”(F)

The Question about Fasting

14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often,[c] but your disciples do not fast?”(G) 15 And Jesus said to them, “The wedding attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.(H) 16 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak, for the patch pulls away from the cloak, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are ruined, but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed

18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”(I) 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20 Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak,(J) 21 for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.”(K) 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that moment.(L) 23 When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,(M) 24 he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him.(N) 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26 And the report of this spread through all of that district.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying loudly, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(O) 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you have faith that I can do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith, let it be done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly ordered them, “See that no one knows of this.”(P) 31 But they went away and spread the news about him through all of that district.(Q)

Jesus Heals One Who Was Mute

32 After they had gone away, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to him.(R) 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”(S)

The Harvest Is Great, the Laborers Few

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness.(T) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(U) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;(V) 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

For which is easier, to say, ‘(H)Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that (I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the (J)paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” And he got up and [c]went home. But when the crowds saw this, they were afraid, and (K)glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Matthew and Sinners Called

(L)And as Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called (M)Matthew, sitting in the tax office; and He *said to him, (N)Follow Me!” And he stood up and followed Him.

10 [d]Then it happened that as [e]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and [f]sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “(O)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, It is not (P)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn [g](Q)what this means: ‘(R)I desire [h]compassion, [i]and not sacrifice,’ for (S)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A Question About Fasting

14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him, [j]asking, “Why do we and (T)the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the [k]attendants of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 But no one puts [l]a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for [m]the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Miracles of Healing

18 (U)While He was saying these things to them, behold, [n]a synagogue [o]official came and [p](V)was bowing down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and began to follow him, and so did His disciples.

20 And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched (W)the [q]fringe of His [r]garment; 21 for she was saying [s]to herself, “If I only (X)touch His garment, I will [t]be saved from this.” 22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, (Y)take courage; (Z)your faith has [u]saved you.” [v]At once the woman was [w]saved from her hemorrhage.

23 And when Jesus came into the [x]official’s house, and saw (AA)the flute-players and the crowd in noisy disorder, 24 He was saying, “Leave; for the girl (AB)has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him. 25 But (AC)when the crowd had been sent out, coming in, He (AD)took her by the hand, and the girl [y]got up. 26 (AE)And this news spread throughout all that land.

27 And as Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, [z]crying out, “Have mercy on us, (AF)Son of David!” 28 And when He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, [aa]It shall be done to you (AG)according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus (AH)sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this!” 31 But they went out and (AI)spread the news about Him throughout all that land.

32 Now as they were going out, behold, (AJ)a mute, (AK)demon-possessed man [ab]was brought to Him. 33 And after the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, “(AL)Nothing like this has [ac]ever been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He (AM)casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

35 And Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, (AN)teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

36 (AO)And seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them, (AP)because they were [ad]distressed and [ae]downcast like sheep [af]without a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, (AQ)The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
