La Nuova Diodati
24 Abrahamo era ormai vecchio e di età avanzata; e l'Eterno aveva benedetto Abrahamo in ogni cosa.
2 E Abrahamo disse al servo piú anziano di casa sua che aveva il governo su tutti i suoi beni: «Deh, metti la tua mano sotto la mia coscia;
3 e io ti farò giurare per l'Eterno, il DIO dei cieli e il DIO della terra, che tu non prenderai per moglie a mio figlio alcuna delle figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali io dimoro;
4 ma andrai al mio paese e al mio parentado a prendere una moglie per mio figlio, per Isacco».
5 Il servo gli rispose: «Forse quella donna non sarà disposta a seguirmi in questo paese; dovrò io allora riportare tuo figlio nel paese da cui tu sei uscito?».
6 Allora Abrahamo gli disse: «Guardati dal riportare là mio figlio!
7 L'Eterno, il DIO dei cieli, che mi trasse dalla casa di mio padre e dal mio paese natio, e mi parlò e mi giurò dicendo: «Io darò questo paese alla tua discendenza, egli manderà il suo angelo davanti a te, e tu prenderai di là una moglie per mio figlio.
8 E se la donna non sarà disposta a seguirti, allora sarai sciolto da questo giuramento a me fatto; soltanto non riportare là mio figlio».
9 Così il servo pose la mano sotto la coscia di Abrahamo suo signore e fece a lui giuramento in merito a questo problema.
10 Poi il servo prese dieci cammelli fra i cammelli del suo signore e partì, parlando con sé ogni sorta di beni del suo signore. Egli si mise in viaggio e andò in Mesopotamia, alla città di Nahor.
11 E fece inginocchiare i cammelli fuori della città presso un pozzo d'acqua, verso sera, all'ora in cui le donne escono ad attingere l'acqua, e disse:
12 «O Eterno, DIO del mio signore Abrahamo, ti prego, fa' che quest'oggi possa fare un felice incontro, e usa benignità verso Abrahamo mio signore!
13 Ecco, io sto presso questa fonte d'acqua, mentre le figlie degli abitanti della città escono ad attingere acqua.
14 Fa' che la fanciulla alla quale dirò: "Deh, abbassa la tua brocca perché io beva", e che mi risponderà: "Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli", sia quella che tu hai destinata al tuo servo Isacco. Da questo comprenderò che tu hai usato benignità verso il mio signore».
15 Egli non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quando ecco uscire con la sua brocca sulla spalla Rebecca, figlia di Bethuel, figlio di Milkah, moglie di Nahor, fratello di Abrahamo.
16 La Fanciulla era molto bella d'aspetto, vergine, e nessun uomo l'aveva mai conosciuta. Ella scese alla fonte, riempì la sua brocca, e risalì.
17 Allora il servo le corse incontro e le disse: «Deh, lasciami bere un po' d'acqua dalla tua brocca».
18 Ella rispose: «Bevi, signor mio»; poi si affrettò a calare la brocca sulla mano, e gli diede da bere.
19 Come ebbe finito di dargli da bere, disse: «Attingerò acqua anche per i tuoi cammelli, finché abbiano bevuto a sufficienza».
20 In fretta vuotò la sua brocca nell'abbeveratoio, corse di nuovo alla fonte ad attingere acqua e ne attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui.
21 Intanto quell'uomo la contemplava in silenzio, per sapere se l'Eterno avesse o no fatto prosperare il suo viaggio.
22 Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, l'uomo prese un anello d'oro per il naso del peso di mezzo siclo e due braccialetti del peso di dieci sicli d'oro per i polsi di lei, e disse:
23 Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo, per favore. C'è posto per noi in casa di tuo padre per passare la notte?».
24 Ella rispose: «Io sono figlia di Bethuel figlio di Milkah, che ella partorì a Nahor».
25 E aggiunse: «Da noi c'è strame e foraggio in quantità e anche posto per passare la notte».
26 Allora l'uomo s'inchinò, adorò l'Eterno e disse:
27 «Benedetto l'Eterno, il DIO di Abrahamo mio signore, che non ha cessato di usare la sua benignità e fedeltà verso il mio signore! Quanto a me, nel viaggio, l'Eterno mi ha guidato alla casa dei fratelli del mio signore».
28 E la fanciulla corse a raccontare queste cose a casa di sua madre.
29 Or Rebecca aveva un fratello chiamato Labano. E Labano corse fuori da quell'uomo alla fonte.
30 Come egli vide l'anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi di sua sorella e udì le parole di Rebecca sua sorella che diceva: «Così mi ha parlato quell'uomo», venne da quell'uomo, ed ecco che se ne stava presso ai cammelli, vicino alla fonte.
31 E disse: «Entra, benedetto dall'Eterno! Perché stai fuori? Io ho preparato la casa e un luogo per i cammelli».
32 L'uomo entrò in casa, e Labano scaricò i cammelli diede strame e foraggio ai cammelli e portò acqua per lavare i piedi di lui e i piedi degli uomini che erano con lui.
33 Poi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare; ma egli disse: «Non mangerò finché non abbia fatto la mia ambasciata». L'altro disse: «Parla».
34 Allora egli disse: «Io sono servo di Abrahamo.
35 L'Eterno ha benedetto abbondantemente il mio signore, che è divenuto grande; gli ha dato pecore e buoi, argento e oro, servi e serve, cammelli e asini.
36 Or Sara, moglie del mio signore, ha partorito nella sua vecchiaia un figlio al mio padrone, che ha dato a lui tutto ciò che possiede.
37 E il mio signore mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: "Non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra i figli dei Cananei, nel paese dei quali dimoro;
38 ma andrai alla casa di mio padre e al mio parentado e là prenderai una moglie per mio figlio".
39 Allora io dissi al mio padrone: "Può darsi che la donna non mi voglia seguire".
40 Ma egli rispose: "L'Eterno, davanti al quale ho camminato, manderà il suo angelo con te e farà prosperare il tuo viaggio, e tu prenderai per mio figlio una moglie dal mio parentado e dalla casa di mio padre.
41 Sarai sciolto dal giuramento, fattomi, quando sarai andato dal mio parentado; se poi non vorranno dartela, allora sarai sciolto dal giuramento fattomi".
42 Oggi sono arrivato alla fonte e ho detto: "O Eterno, DIO del mio signore Abrahamo, se così ti piace, ti prego di far prosperare il viaggio che ho intrapreso;
43 ecco, io mi fermo presso la fonte d'acqua; fa' che la fanciulla che uscirà ad attingere acqua e alla quale dirò: "Deh, lasciami bere un po' d'acqua dalla tua brocca",
44 e che mi dirà: "Bevi pure e ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli", sia la moglie che l'Eterno ha destinato al figlio del mio signore.
45 Prima che io avessi finito di parlare in cuor mio, ecco uscir fuori Rebecca con la sua brocca sulla spalla; ella scese alla fonte e attinse acqua. Allora io le dissi:
46 "Deh, lasciami bere!". Ed ella si affrettò a calare la brocca dalla spalla e rispose: "Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli". Così bevvi io, ed ella diede pure da bere ai cammelli.
47 Allora la interrogai e le dissi: "Di chi sei figlia?". Ella rispose: "Sono figlia di Bethuel, figlio di Nahor, che Milkah gli partorì". Così io le misi l'anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi.
48 Poi mi inchinai, adorai l'Eterno e benedissi l'Eterno, il DIO di Abrahamo mio signore, che mi ha condotto per la giusta via a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio signore.
49 E ora, se volete usare benevolenza e fedeltà verso il mio signore, ditemelo; se no, ditemelo lo stesso e io mi volgerò a destra o a sinistra».
50 Allora Labano e Bethuel risposero e dissero: «La cosa procede dall'Eterno; noi non possiamo parlarti né in bene né in male.
51 Ecco, Rebecca è qui davanti a te, prendila, va
52 Quando il servo di Abrahamo udì le loro parole, si prostrò a terra davanti all'Eterno.
53 Il servo trasse fuori oggetti d'argento e oggetti d'oro e vesti e li diede a Rebecca; e donò pure delle cose preziose al fratello e alla madre di lei.
54 Poi mangiarono e bevvero, egli e gli uomini che erano con lui, e si fermarono per la notte. Alzatisi al mattino, il servo disse: «Lasciatemi tornare dal mio signore».
55 Il fratello e la madre di Rebecca dissero: «Lascia che la fanciulla rimanga alcuni giorni con noi, almeno una diecina; poi se ne può andare».
56 Ma egli rispose loro: «Non mi trattenete, perché l'Eterno ha fatto prosperare il mio viaggio; lasciatemi partire, affinché io me ne torni dal mio signore».
57 Allora essi dissero: «Chiamiamo la fanciulla e chiediamo a lei stessa».
58 Allora chiamarono Rebecca e le dissero: «Vuoi andare con quest'uomo?». Ella rispose: «Si, andrò».
59 Così lasciarono andare Rebecca loro sorella e la sua balia col servo di Abrahamo e i suoi uomini.
60 E benedissero Rebecca e le dissero: «Sorella nostra, possa tu divenire madre di migliaia di miriadi e possa la tua discendenza possedere la porta dei suoi nemici».
61 Allora Rebecca e le sue serve si levarono, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell'uomo. Così il servo prese Rebecca e se ne andò.
62 Or Isacco era tornato dal pozzo di Lahai-Roi, perché abitava nella regione del Neghev.
63 Isacco era uscito, sul far della sera, per meditare nella campagna; ed egli alzò gli occhi e guardò, ed ecco venire dei cammelli.
64 Anche Rebecca alzò gli occhi e vide Isacco; allora ella smontò in fretta dal cammello,
65 e disse al servo: «Chi è quell'uomo che viene nel campo incontro a noi?». Il servo rispose: «E' il mio signore». Allora ella, preso il velo, si coprì.
66 Poi il servo raccontò a Isacco tutte le cose che aveva fatto.
67 Isacco introdusse Rebecca nella tenda di Sara sua madre e la prese con sé; ella divenne sua moglie ed egli l'amò. Così Isacco fu consolato dopo la morte di sua madre.

A Wife for Isaac
24 Now (A)Abraham was old, advanced in age; and Yahweh had (B)blessed Abraham in every way. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who (C)ruled over all that he owned, “(D)Please place your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by Yahweh, (E)the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you (F)shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of (G)the Canaanites, among whom I live, 4 but you will go to (H)my land and to my kin, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 And the servant said to him, “Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to this land; should I indeed take your son back to the land from where you came?” 6 Then Abraham said to him, “(I)Beware lest you take my son back there! 7 (J)Yahweh, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kin, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, ‘(K)To your seed I will give this land,’ He will send (L)His angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will (M)be free from this oath of mine; (N)only do not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant (O)placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and he went with all kinds of (P)good things of his master’s in his hand. So he arose and went to [a]Mesopotamia, to (Q)the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by (R)the well of water at evening time, (S)the time when the women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “(T)O Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please (U)cause this to happen before me today, and show lovingkindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, (V)I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; 14 now may it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will give water to your camels to drink also’—may she be the one whom You have decided for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown lovingkindness to my master.”
Rebekah Goes with Abraham’s Servant
15 (W)And before he had finished speaking, behold, (X)Rebekah who was born to Bethuel the son of (Y)Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, was coming out with her jar on her shoulder. 16 Now the young woman was (Z)very beautiful in appearance, a virgin, and no man had [b]known her; and she went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “(AA)Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 (AB)And she said, “Drink, my lord”; and she quickly lowered her jar to her hand and gave him a drink. 19 Now when she had finished giving him a drink, (AC)she said, “I will draw also for your camels until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she hurried and emptied her jar into the watering channel and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. 21 (AD)Meanwhile, the man was gazing at her [c]in silence, to know whether Yahweh had made his journey successful or not.
22 Now it happened that when the camels had finished drinking, the man took a (AE)gold ring weighing a [d]half-shekel and two bracelets for her [e]wrists weighing ten shekels in gold, 23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there a place for us to lodge in your father’s house?” 24 And she said to him, “(AF)I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 And she said to him, “We have plenty of both straw and feed, and a place to lodge in.” 26 Then the man (AG)bowed low and worshiped Yahweh. 27 And he said, “(AH)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken (AI)His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, (AJ)Yahweh has guided me in the way to the house of my master’s brothers.”
28 Then (AK)the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was (AL)Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring. 30 Now it happened, when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s [f]wrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “[g]This is what the man said to me,” he came out to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 And he said, “(AM)Come in, (AN)blessed of Yahweh! Why do you stand outside since (AO)I have prepared the house and a place for the camels?” 32 So the man came into the house. Then [h](AP)Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have spoken my words.” And he said, “Speak!” 34 So he said, “I am (AQ)Abraham’s servant. 35 And Yahweh has greatly (AR)blessed my master, so he has become great; and He has given him (AS)flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. 36 Now (AT)Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master [i]in her old age, and (AU)he has given him all that he has. 37 (AV)And my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I [j]live; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 (AW)Then I said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman does not follow me.’ 40 And he said to me, ‘(AX)Yahweh, before whom I have (AY)walked, will send (AZ)His angel with you and will make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house. 41 (BA)Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives. Now if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’
42 “So (BB)I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go (BC)successful; 43 behold, (BD)I am standing by the spring of water, and may it be that the [k]maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, “(BE)Please let me drink a little water from your jar”; 44 and she will say to me, “You drink, and I will draw for your camels also”; she is the woman whom Yahweh has decided upon for my master’s son.’
45 “Before I had finished (BF)speaking in my heart, behold, (BG)Rebekah was coming out with her jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew, and (BH)I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ 46 Then she hurried and lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘(BI)Drink, and I will also give water to your camels to drink’; so I drank, and she also gave water to the camels to drink. 47 (BJ)Then I asked her and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him’; and I put the (BK)ring on her nose and the bracelets on her [l]wrists. 48 And I (BL)bowed low and worshiped Yahweh; and I blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, (BM)who had guided me in the true way to take the daughter of my master’s [m]relative for his son. 49 So now if you are going to (BN)show lovingkindness and truth with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “(BO)The matter comes from Yahweh; (BP)so we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as Yahweh has spoken.”
52 Now it happened that when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he (BQ)bowed himself to the ground [n]before Yahweh. 53 The servant brought out (BR)articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. And then they arose in the morning, and he said, “(BS)Send me away to my master.” 55 But her brother and her mother said, “(BT)Let the young woman stay with us a few days, or even ten; afterward she will go.” 56 And he said to them, “Do not delay me, since (BU)Yahweh has made my way successful. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 And they said, “We will call the young woman and ask about [o]her wishes.” 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” 59 Thus they sent away their sister Rebekah and (BV)her nurse with Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
“May you, our sister,
(BW)Become thousands of ten thousands,
And may (BX)your seed possess
The gate of those who hate him.”
61 Then Rebekah arose with her young women, and they mounted the camels and went after the man. So the servant took Rebekah and went.
Rebekah Becomes Isaac’s Wife
62 Now Isaac had come from going to (BY)Beer-lahai-roi, for he [p]was living in (BZ)the land of the [q]Negev. 63 And Isaac went out (CA)to [r]muse in the field toward evening; and (CB)he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac and dismounted from the camel. 65 Then she said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “He is my master.” Then she took her [s]veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant recounted to Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and (CC)he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and (CD)he loved her. Thus, Isaac was comforted after (CE)his mother’s death.
