Elisha Heals a Syrian General
5 Now Naaman, the commander of the king of Syria’s army, was esteemed and respected by his master,[a] for through him the Lord had given Syria military victories. But this great warrior had a skin disease.[b] 2 Raiding parties went out from Syria and took captive from the land of Israel a young girl, who became a servant to Naaman’s wife. 3 She told her mistress, “If only my master were in the presence of the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his skin disease.”
4 Naaman[c] went and told his master what the girl from the land of Israel had said. 5 The king of Syria said, “Go! I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman[d] went, taking with him 10 talents[e] of silver, 6,000 shekels of gold,[f] and 10 suits of clothes. 6 He brought the letter to the king of Israel. It read: “This is a letter of introduction for my servant Naaman,[g] whom I have sent to be cured of his skin disease.” 7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God? Can I kill or restore life? Why does he ask me to cure a man of his skin disease?[h] Certainly you must see that he is looking for an excuse to fight me!”[i]
8 When Elisha the prophet[j] heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent this message to the king, “Why did you tear your clothes? Send him[k] to me so he may know there is a prophet in Israel.” 9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stood in the doorway of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent out a messenger who told him, “Go and wash seven times in the Jordan; your skin will be restored[l] and you will be healed.” 11 Naaman went away angry. He said, “Look, I thought for sure he would come out, stand there, invoke the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the area, and cure the skin disease. 12 The rivers of Damascus, the Abana and Pharpar, are better than any of the waters of Israel![m] Could I not wash in them and be healed?” So he turned around and went away angry. 13 His servants approached and said to him,[n] “O master,[o] if the prophet had told you to do some difficult task,[p] you would have been willing to do it.[q] It seems you should be happy that he simply said, ‘Wash and you will be healed.’[r] 14 So he went down and dipped in the Jordan seven times, as the prophet had instructed.[s] His skin became as smooth as a young child’s[t] and he was healed.

30 I will praise you, O Lord, for you lifted me up,[c]
and did not allow my enemies to gloat[d] over me.
2 O Lord my God,
I cried out to you and you healed me.[e]
3 O Lord, you pulled me[f] up from Sheol;
you rescued me from among those descending into the grave.[g]
4 Sing to the Lord, you faithful followers[h] of his;
give thanks to his holy name.[i]
5 For his anger lasts only a brief moment,
and his good favor restores one’s life.[j]
One may experience sorrow during the night,
but joy arrives in the morning.[k]
6 In my self-confidence I said,
“I will never be shaken.”[l]
7 O Lord, in your good favor you made me secure.[m]
Then you rejected me[n] and I was terrified.
8 To you, O Lord, I cried out;
I begged the Lord for mercy:[o]
9 “What[p] profit is there in taking my life,[q]
in my descending into the Pit?[r]
Can the dust of the grave[s] praise you?
Can it declare your loyalty?[t]
10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me.
O Lord, deliver me.”[u]
11 Then you turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and covered me with joy.[v]
12 So now[w] my heart[x] will sing to you and not be silent;
O Lord my God, I will always[y] give thanks to you.
Support One Another
6 Brothers and sisters,[a] if a person[b] is discovered in some sin,[c] you who are spiritual[d] restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness.[e] Pay close attention[f] to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too. 2 Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 Let each one examine[g] his own work. Then he can take pride[h] in himself and not compare himself with[i] someone else. 5 For each one will carry[j] his own load.
6 Now the one who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with the one who teaches[k] it.
7 Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool.[a] For a person[b] will reap what he sows, 8 because the person who sows to his own flesh[c] will reap corruption[d] from the flesh,[e] but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 So we must not grow weary[f] in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up.[g] 10 So then,[h] whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.[i]
Final Instructions and Benediction
11 See what big letters I make as I write to you with my own hand!
12 Those who want to make a good showing in external matters[j] are trying to force you to be circumcised. They do so[k] only to avoid being persecuted[l] for the cross of Christ. 13 For those who are circumcised do not obey the law themselves, but they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh.[m] 14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[n] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For[o] neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for[p] anything; the only thing that matters is a new creation![q] 16 And all who will behave[r] in accordance with this rule, peace and mercy be on them, and on the Israel of God.[s]
The Mission of the Seventy-Two
10 After this[a] the Lord appointed seventy-two[b] others and sent them on ahead of him two by two into every town[c] and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He[d] said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest[e] to send out[f] workers into his harvest. 3 Go! I[g] am sending you out like lambs[h] surrounded by wolves.[i] 4 Do not carry[j] a money bag,[k] a traveler’s bag,[l] or sandals, and greet no one on the road.[m] 5 Whenever[n] you enter a house,[o] first say, ‘May peace[p] be on this house!’ 6 And if a peace-loving person[q] is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you.[r] 7 Stay[s] in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you,[t] for the worker deserves his pay.[u] Do not move around from house to house. 8 Whenever[v] you enter a town[w] and the people[x] welcome you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal[y] the sick in that town[z] and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God[aa] has come upon[ab] you!’ 10 But whenever[ac] you enter a town[ad] and the people[ae] do not welcome[af] you, go into its streets[ag] and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town[ah] that clings to our feet we wipe off[ai] against you.[aj] Nevertheless know this: The kingdom of God has come.’[ak]
16 “The one who listens[a] to you listens to me,[b] and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects[c] the one who sent me.”[d]
17 Then[e] the seventy-two[f] returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to[g] us in your name!”[h] 18 So[i] he said to them, “I saw[j] Satan fall[k] like lightning[l] from heaven. 19 Look, I have given you authority to tread[m] on snakes and scorpions[n] and on the full force of the enemy,[o] and nothing will[p] hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that[q] the spirits submit to you, but rejoice[r] that your names stand written[s] in heaven.”
